Feifei Li’s journey from a teenager in China to a leading figure in artificial intelligence is nothing short of remarkable.
Born in Beijing in 1976, Li grew up in Chengdu. Her life took a dramatic turn when her family moved to America. Initially, the family didn’t speak English, so the burden of translation fell on Li. She credited kind teachers at her new high school for helping her overcome challenges, as she developed language skills and regained her academic excellence. Outside school, she worked tirelessly in low-paying jobs to support her family. During this period, she felt like an outsider with few friends, suffering from isolation (孤独).
Despite these hardships, she was accepted into Princeton to study physics. In 1999, Li graduated with honors, before going on to complete her Ph. D. and eventually joining Princeton’s computer science department as an assistant professor.
At Princeton, Li began to pioneer ImageNet, a large-scale image database in visual object recognition software. Frustrated by her peers’ inefficient approach of training computers to recognize one image at a time, she introduced computers to a vast number of objects based on children’s visual learning methods. This led to the creation of ImageNet, which involved a massive labeling effort for over three million images. Instead of getting support within the Princeton department, she outsourced (外包) the task to the Internet, using an Amazon’s program to parcel the job out to remote workers around the globe. Before long ImageNet was completed, and it has subsequently had an enormous impact on the development of artificial intelligence. The database has now grown to over fourteen million images, and is a fundamental part of countless AI applications, like self-driving car technology.
Beyond her technical contributions, Li is a faithful advocate for moral AI development. She founded the Human-Centered AI Institute to advance AI research that improves the human condition. Moreover, Li’s influence extends to promoting diversity in AI, through initiatives like AI4ALL, which educates historically excluded talents in the field. Her devotion to AI development earns her the name of “the Godmother of AI”.
4. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. Li’s pursuit of further excellence. B. Li’s struggles in the new life.
C. Li’s efforts in balancing studies and work. D. Li’s gratitude to her teachers.
5. What is special about ImageNet?
A. It recognizes a single object at a time. B. It produces a huge number of images.
C. It automates image-recognition process. D. It features extensive image recognition.
6. Why does the author mention the Human-Centered AI Institute?
A. To praise Li’s outstanding technical competence.
B. To highlight Li’s status in the AI research field.
C. To demonstrate Li’s devotion to moral AI development.
D. To emphasize Li’s influence on advancing diversity in AI.
7. Which of the following best describes Li’s character?
A. Creative and caring. B. Ambitious and optimistic.
C. Cautious and patriotic. D. Conventional and determined.

Our earliest ancestors trapped or hunted what meat they ate. When we learned to domesticate (驯化)animals, we raised them on our land, or we wandered the land with our herds. No matter which tribe we belonged to, our animals were our property. We ate their flesh in small portions, and we ate almost every bit of them, especially the poorest among us.
The Industrial Revolution changed meat. In the 19th century, refrigeration enabled meat to be trucked in from far away, or shipped from even further away, which eventually led to the destroying of forests in places like Brazil. Production then became more efficient. By the late 1940s, antibiotics (抗生素) became routine in chicken feed. By the late 1990s, genetically modified (转基因的) corn and soy brought abundant crops of animal feed. Animals were bred to be bigger and faster-growing. In the U.S., government subsidies (补贴) helped: free groundwater, federally backed loans, price guarantees for feed crops. And meat went big.
Today the $1 trillion global meat industry is dominated by a handful of companies, including JBS, Cargill, and Tyson. Since 1961, meat production has increased four times, dwarfing the growth in the human population, which merely doubled.
Meat went from being special to being an everyday right. The more we developed, the more flesh we ate. China’s meat consumption jumped sharply, from about 6. 6 pounds per person in 1961 to more than 140 pounds in 2024. But the United States became the lions of Planet Carnivore (食肉动物). On average, Americans went from eating around 207 pounds of meat in 1961 to 280 pounds in 2024, and chicken came to dominate.
It wasn’t just chicken consumption that changed. Follow a chicken truck to the butchery — continued forest destruction, an alarming rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria, ever-increasing greenhouse gas emissions — and you realize what a dark shadow we have cast over where we live.
8. How did the Industrial Revolution affect meat?
A. It caused a sharp fall in the price of meat. B. It decreased the nutritional value of meat.
C. It restricted the use of antibiotics in meat. D. It revolutionized meat production and distribution.
9. What does the underlined word “dwarfing” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Making something seem small. B. Greatly expanding something.
C. Matching something in number. D. Negatively impacting something.
10. How does the author show the rapid increase in meat consumption?
A By making a comparison. B. By giving explanations.
C. By introducing a concept. D. By making a prediction.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Antibiotics Has Transformed Chicken Feed B. Global Companies Dominate Meat Industry
C. Our Taste for Flesh Has Exhausted the Earth D. Meat Production Results in Forest Destruction
D
Twins have been rare in human history and for that reason can seem special. Many cultures associate twins with health and energy, while others see them as a reminder of the duality (双重性) of life and death, good and evil, and some famous twins are even credited with the birth of nations. Despite the fact that almost all primates (灵长目动物) today, including humans, usually give birth to just one baby, our most recent common ancient ancestors, who lived about 60 million years ago likely gave birth to twins as the standard, according to the recent research.
Researchers have been studying the evolution of litter size — the number of babies born per pregnancy — for years to find out when and why twin pregnancies became uncommon. And the best way to reconstruct the history of litter size is to map the known litter size of as many species as possible across the mammalian family tree and then used mathematical models. But outside of rare events where entire animal families are fossilized together, it is extraordinarily difficult to assess litter size for extinct species from the fossilized skeleton (骨骼) alone. So they instead collected data on as many living mammals as possible, from nearly 1, 000 living mammal species for information about how many babies are commonly born to each species.
Based on the study, the switch to single births in many primates, including humans, occurred at least 50 million years ago, leading to the evolution of increasingly larger bodies and brains. This adaptation allowed for the development of large human babies with sizable brains capable of complex learning as babies and young children, and increased their chances of survival. Furthermore, because multiple pregnancy requires more energy from the mother, early primate ancestors who gave birth to just one large baby may have been at a survival advantage.
The findings don’t mean that having twins today is a disadvantage. That is quite a different experience from our tiny primate ancestors birthing in the trees 60 million years ago.
12. What do we know about twins in human history?
A. Twin birth has been relatively infrequent.
B. Twins are viewed as a symbol of harmony.
C. Twins are more likely to become nation founders.
D. Twin birth has seen a noticeable increase in recent times.
13. Which approach was adopted in the study of litter size evolution?
A. Drawing mammalian family trees. B. Employing living mammal data.
C. Construct models of extinct species. D. Assessing fossilized skeletons.
14. What led to the shift from twins to single birth according to the study?
A. The growing preference for single births among humans.
B. The increasing complexity of social structure in primate societies.
C. The necessity for mothers to conserve energy during the parenting process.
D. The natural process of genetic development of body size and brain capacity.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards twins’ evolution?
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Approving. D. Ambiguous.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文中的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
At some point, everyone has faced unkind remarks or actions. Whether it’s teasing from classmates or harsh words from peers, dealing with such situations can be challenging. ____16____ Here are some tips to help you respond effectively and build your confidence.
Practice comebacks. Quick, confident replies - known as comebacks - can stop bullies in their tracks. Instead of waiting for the perfect moment, try practicing. Ask a friend or a sympathetic adult to role-play with you. If you don’t feel comfortable with this, you can try it on your own in the mirror. Notice which style of comeback feels most natural to you. For example, if humor doesn’t feel natural, a calm response like “Are you finished?” may be more effective. ____17____
Learn a little about your bully. Bullies are usually very socially intelligent and great people-readers. They can easily see which comments get under people’s skin. You can benefit from building up this same skill, but using it for defense instead of for aggression (like the bully). Watch the bully’s reaction when you deliver your comeback and the reaction of others around him. Did he respond with surprise or walk away? ____18____ Watch for patterns and make note of what worked and what didn’t.
____19____ Sometimes comebacks can lead to more insults and even violence. Keep an eye out for signs that the person is becoming aggressive. The person may touch his head or face and clench (握紧) his fists. The person may remove an article of clothing, and may crouch down slightly. In addition, the person may turn his non-dominant side toward you; so, a left-handed person may turn his right side toward you. If you notice any of these behaviors, do not try to make a comeback and back away from the person.
Get help. If someone is bullying you regularly, get help from a teacher or a parent. ____20____ If you can’t solve the problem informally, get someone in a position of authority involved. You shouldn’t have to deal with constant insults from a bully in any situation.
A. Come up with safety ideas.
B. Watch for physical signals of violence.
C. Then the comeback style used was successful.
D. Bullies are less likely to pick on you if you aren’t alone.
E. You can also get in a lot of trouble for using these kinds of insults.
F. While ignoring them sometimes works, a more active approach is often needed.
G. Use what works best for you until you can practice and use the other methods effectively.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Awards lined the front wall of the music room from the past successes of large, talented classes. But a shift in educational policies (政策), with an emphasis on academics, had reduced my choir to a mere 32 students. My lead singers had graduated or been forced to drop music classes, leaving me with inexperienced kids who couldn’t read music and could sing only a simple melody (曲子).
This year’s singing contest would be held in seven months. Compared to other school choirs, the Madison choir with 75 members, King School with 125 students and etc., ours was little in size.
One day, a student asked eagerly, “What will we be singing for contest this year?”
I feared this moment. “Maybe we’ll skip the contest,” I suggested.
“No! We can make it!” the kids screamed.
“I’ll have to think about it,” I said, hoping their enthusiasm would die off soon.
But that didn’t happen. Every day they begged and insisted. However, I couldn’t tell them they weren’t good enough as I had to protect their self-esteem (自尊). My efforts to discourage their eagerness, by showing them a difficult piece of music from the contest list, simply ended with, “It’s okay, Mrs. Pliszka, we’ll get it.”
I struggled to make a decision. If I destroyed their hope, would I destroy their spirit? I wasn’t afraid of hard work, and I enjoyed a challenge. But I wasn’t a miracle (奇迹) worker. So I considered this dilemma.
Finally, one morning I stomped into class. “From now on, be in your seats with your music folders on the desk when the bell rings, and sit at attention, ready for warm-ups the instant I’m ready to begin. When I’m working with one section, there will be no talking from the others. You will listen, and you will learn. You will work harder. If all these rules are obeyed, we will be entering the contest. To achieve our big dream, …”
The rest of my sentence was lost in shouts of delight and applause. I was certain they would fail to keep this promise, and no one would have to be embarrassed.

As the weeks progressed, the kids remained focused. They followed the rules with no complaints and seemed to thrive on the discipline demanded of them. Each morning they sat attention, ready for warm-ups, learned, practiced, rehearsed and went over and over the songs to be sung in the contest. I was amazed at the driving force that kept pushing them on. The courage they had shown from day one overwhelmed me, changing something within myself. No more did I hesitate, but make every effort to teach them. With the passage of time, the kids were making steady and remarkable improvements, which was beyond my expectations. (90w)
When the contest day finally arrived, the kids felt ready to take on the world! They mounted the stairs, smiles of confidence spreading on their faces. Their singing sounded good. The entire audience broke into loud applause the instant they finished their songs. My heart swelled with pride for this little group. After what seemed a century, the results were posted. There was our name at the very top! All around kids were squealing and embracing. Warm tears wet my cheeks. And I was surrounded by kids who had a dream—kids who refused to give up—kids who taught me to never doubt the possibility of success for any student or any class ever again. (95w)
