He made his way to Shanghai to take pictures of the first commercial fight of the C919. When he knew the C919 started its service to Chengdu, he quickly bought a ticket.

There was one tree in Doug’s backyard. Only one tree, but it was enough. It was the biggest tree Doug had ever seen. Doug was young and not very strong, but he knew he could climb this tree.
He waited until the weather was perfect: early autumn - crisp but not cold. He wore a blue sweater and his worn-out old shoes. His gloves (手套) were so thick that they could keep him away from the hurt from the tree trunk. He was ready.
“Wait here,” he told his dog, Harvey. “I’ll be back later.” The tree was his special place so he didn’t want to share it with anyone else.
Doug jumped for the lowest branch. He nearly slipped (打滑) but held on. Using all his strength, he pulled himself up.
He continued slowly and carefully. He was in no hurry because he had all day.
Halfway up the tree, Doug took a break. He didn’t feel tired but wanted to rest before getting tired out.
“Hello,” he said to a passing butterfly. “Any advice for me?”
The butterfly didn’t reply. Doug didn’t need her help anyway. It was time to continue. He was just a few branches from the top. Suddenly, something terrible happened.
He lifted his left leg and placed it onto the next branch. The wood was old and weak. It broke and fell to the ground. Doug was watching and prepared. As his left foot slipped, he held himself in the air with his arms. Breathing slowly, he moved his legs forward and stepped onto the next branch. He was safe again.
“That’s enough for today,” he said. “The top can wait.”

My family and I never talked about school as the ticket to a future. I was in the classrooms, but I wasn’t there to learn to write, read or even speak. When it was my turn to read, I wanted to hide. I was 13 years old, but I already hated being who I was.
I had an English teacher, Mr. Creech, who knew I couldn’t read. In one of my first lessons the teacher said that anyone who had a reading age below six had to stand up. I felt so embarrassed. But at the same time, it made me realize that I needed to change the situation. I was determined it wouldn’t happen again. Later that day, Mr. Creech encouraged me and promised he would try his best to help me learn to read. From then on, I never gave up practicing reading.
Now I was 41 years old. One day, I planned to fly back to Texas to visit my friend and family. On my way from the airport, I saw Mr. Creech buying himself a drink. I rushed over and reached into my pocket to pay for him. “Do I know you?” he asked. “yes, sir, you do know me,” I answered excitedly. “My name is Anthony Hamilton. You taught me English.” The look on his face told me that he remembered the boy he’d once encouraged.
“I’m so glad I had a chance to see you,” I said. “And Mr. Creech, I have great news to share.” I told him I had learned to read. But that wasn’t all. I had become a published author and an active speaker. “The next time you get another Anthony Hamilton in your classroom, please encourage him to read as well,” I added.

Last year, I went to Beijing Qizhi Special Education School for community service (社区服务). Before we took the bus, my friend asked me a question: “Why are you here?” I did not know how to answer the question.
The school was not far from my school, but it looked like it was in a different world. A group of children were waiting for us. A boy walked toward me. He held my hands and pulled me to the ground. I kissed the earth and tasted nature.
I could not understand what he was doing at first, then I was very angry. Though I was very angry, I controlled my anger.
A teacher stopped this awkward (尴尬的) silence when she shouted at the boy. “What are you doing right here, right now?” she said “You will never see your mom again if you keep doing this. Now, say sorry!” “Sorry,” he cried fearfully and nervously. I said nothing, but I realized something about this child. After lunch I asked the teacher for information about the child’s parents.
She said that the child was very different from other students because of an illness. His family could not afford to treat him. He needed the kindness of his family, but they had abandoned him. So he depended on the support from the teachers and community service workers like us.
I suddenly realized I could answer the question my friend asked me at the beginning of the day.

After that, I went to the gift shop and bought some lovely gifts for my parents. They weren’t expensive. All in all, it was an exciting day. —Helen

When I was just beginning to learn English, I had an important lesson.
Our teacher wrote some words on the blackboard and asked us to copy them down. When I started writing, I found there was a spelling mistake. However, I didn’t point out the mistake at first. I wondered if it would be polite to point out a mistake in the very first lesson.
But then I thought of something important: not everything we learn from books, or on the blackboard, is right. So I decided to put up my hand and speak. “Excuse me,” I said, “there seems to be a mistake.”
To my surprise, the teacher smiled and thanked me. She said I was careful and told all the students to always remember the importance of independent (独立) thinking just like me.
That experience taught me an important lesson: it’s OK to speak up when something doesn’t seem right, even if you’re just starting to learn. It’s important to think for ourselves and not be afraid to ask question.
1.What did the teacher ask the students do?

Going for a picnic is a good experience to be in nature, but it’s terrible to have a picnic that will do harm to the environment. Here are some ways to keep your picnic green.
★Use reusable plates and cups. You don’t need to wash disposable(一次性的) plates and cups because they pollute the environment. It’s greener and cheaper to bring metal plates and cups from home. After the picnic, you can take them home and wash them.
★Try to buy food from local farmers’ markets. In general, if you bring less food for your picnic, you’ll create less pollution.
★Try to have an all-vegetarian picnic. Modern production of meat uses lots of energy and creates lots of pollution.
★Instead of driving, ride a bike or walk to the park. If the park you want to visit is too far from your home, you can take public transportation like buses or subways.

Growing up by the river, I have a lot of good memories. Catching my first fish will always be the best childhood memory that I have, because it started a tradition between my father and me.
It was a hot summer afternoon. My father was fishing with me by the river. He put down his fishing pole and walked over to the far left side of the river and said, “Li Lei, look at this group of fish.”
I walked over and saw some little fish swimming around. I picked up a net that was next to me and tried to catch the fish. Every time the net got close to a fish, it would swim away! They were too fast for my little arms to keep up with. I tried again and again, but nothing worked. Then I saw a small fish. I slowly put the net around it, and thankfully the fish didn’t move. Once I got close enough, I pulled the net out of the water. However, there was just some weed(水草). I felt so disappointed.
“Li Lei, we should go back home now,” my father said. My father started to clean out the net.
“Li Lei, look here! You did catch a fish! It was just in the weed.” My father brought it to me. It was a very small fish, a little bigger than my hand.

“What is the meaning of life?” It is a question that I have asked myself many times over the years. The best answer I ever came across was “The meaning of life is to give life meaning.”
When I was a young boy, I gave my life meaning by simply playing, running, swimming, laughing, and riding my bike.
When I went to school, I gave my life meaning by learning, studying hard, getting good grades and trying to make my mom and dad proud.
In college, I found meaning by deciding what I wanted to study and what career (职业) I wanted to prepare.
When I was working as a teacher, I found meaning by helping open young minds to new ideas and old wisdom(智慧).
When I got married, I found meaning in protecting, providing for, and watching over my wife. And when I found out that both of my sons were born with mental illnesses (精神疾病), I found meaning in loving them, caring for them, and learning from them about love, patience (耐心), faith (信念), and joy.
As I got older, I began to realize that meaning isn’t something that comes and goes. We are responsible for creating our own meaning. All we have to do is love ourselves and others. It is love that gives life meaning. It is love that makes life worth living.

The experts say what once worried me has a name: dyslexia (诵读困难症). But I can tell you it was a lack of desire for education.

Community service workers help others and make everyone feel better. There are so many people in the world that need help. Playing with lonely children may not make a big difference. But it can light a corner in the children’s hearts, making them know they are loved by people.

Today I went on a school trip. We visited the science museum and it was really interesting. We got there so fast by train. We saw some farms and villages along the way. At the museum, I learned a lot about robots. I didn’t know they could play chess with us. It was so cool! Then the guide taught us how to make a model robot. I took a lot of great photos, too. After that, I went to the gift shop and bought some lovely gifts for my parents. They weren’t expensive. All in all, it was an exciting day. —Helen

At around 5pm on Tuesday, Zhang Zili, a firefighter (消防员) took part in a search and rescue operation in a village in Luding. “It is a village located halfway up the mountain.
