Book2 Unit2 Let’s Celebrate——Time for a Change?
Type: Reading(Column)
Topic: Human and Society—Should traditional values be changed?
Time: 40min
Teacher: Huang Suke
Analysis of Material
What: The text contains two discourses from two readers for showing their ideas of where we should eat in New Year’s Eve. In the former one, Wang Peng, a soft engineer, tells his thoughts that we should embrace the change and eat out for the Spring Festival family dinner because there are some advantages. For instance, the dishes are more delicious. In the latter letter, Liu Yonghui is a retired teacher who supports we should eat at home in New Year’s Eve since the process for preparing the Spring Festival is extremely important for each family. Based on the two people opinions, students will begin to think whether we should embrace the change and accept something new when we are faced with tradition.
Why: The article hopes to guide students to pay attention to and think about whether tradition should be changed, and be able to rationally deal with contradictions and conflicts in development and tradition. By making comments on two readers’ opinion, students are capable of understanding the theme meaning that love is more important than where we eat in New Year’s Eve.
How: The genre of the text is newspaper, including two letters from two readers. In the first letter, Wang Peng presents his ideas through pros-cons contrast. In the second letter, Liu Yonghui shows his minds by giving facts. The two letters have common with their structures:opinion-reasons-conclusion, so that students know how to present their own views in the change of tradition.
Analysis of Learners
The students are in Class 6, Grade 1. The students in this class have certain foundation in English, but the level varies greatly among students, and most of the students are introverted. The class atmosphere is totally dull, so we should pay attention to encourage students. But most students are serious and are familiar with traditional festivals, especially the Spring Festival, but they are often at a loss for deep thinking and showing their own ideas on this topic——time for a change? Students have accumulated vocabularies and expressions related to Chun Jie in previous study, but they are still lacking in the ability of analyzing and comparing other’s opinions. Students actually have basically acquired the ability to obtain text details, but the ability to summarize and express views still needs to be further improved. Although students master basic reading skills such as skimming and scanning, they still cannot understand the specific expressions in the text with the help of context.

Teaching Reflection
In brief, there are some shining points of this lesson. Firstly, students improve their reading skills by finding out the details and content of the two letters. Secondly, students think deeply and critically to make mind map of how to present views. Lastly, teacher guides students to realize tradition is important and love between family members is more important. However, there are some disadvantages of this lesson. Students haven’t enough time to think and express their ideas. Besides, some activities are a little difficult for students so that they can’t finish well. In the future, I will avoid these problems and do better.
