For more than 30 years, Zhu Yanjun, 50, had been a migrant worker (农民工) in different cities like many others from rural (农村的) areas. But what made him different was his strong love for reading poetry (诗) and books. In early February, Zhu made headlines by winning a silver medal in the yearly Chinese Poetry Competition hosted by China Central Television.
Born in a village in Jingning county, Gansu province, Zhu only had a middle school education. His love for reading was inspired by his Chinese language teacher who has published many articles in magazines. “I also wanted to publish stories, so I started to read, and borrowed books from friends and classmates, “he told China Daily.
He worked at different construction sites in more than 10 cities. Whenever he arrives in a city, he first visits the bookstores and libraries there. He would take a notebook with him in order to write down paragraphs from the books and recite (背诵) them.
He started reading poems from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and poems written by Chairman MaoZedong because he found them rhythmic and easy to remember. Over the years, he has read thousands of poems and can recite more than 1,000 of them.

In the 2024 New Year, there appeared some words “龙行龘龘” “前程朤朤” “生活鱻鱻”, and so on. Do you know how to write these Chinese characters correctly?
If you can’t, you’re not alone. Nowadays, most people are typing into computers instead of writing on paper. We type Chinese characters mostly according to their pronunciation. The result is to recognize characters without remembering how to write them.
Once China Youth Daily did a survey of 2,517 people, in which 98.9 percent said they had once forgotten how to write a common Chinese character.
Compared to adults, teenagers are better at writing Chinese characters because they spend more time learning and practicing at school. However, the impact of digital technology cannot be ignored.
“Many students are addicted to digital devices such as electronic dictionaries and computers to help with their studies. Overuse of these tools will make students too lazy to think and write,” He Yu, head of a research team for Chinese teaching at a Beijing high school said. Such worries have brought about a popular TV show titled Chinese Spelling Hero, which focuses on Chinese character writing among teenagers. Organizations like the China Calligraphers Association (中国书法协会) are also working to train more teachers in calligraphy.
Interestingly, calligraphy teachers can’t always avoid the effects of modern technology. Shen Bin is a calligraphy teacher at a primary school in Beijing. She admitted that it’s common for teachers like her to forget certain words.

Recycling is a way to take rubbish and turn it into new products. It’s helpful to our environment. There are a number of different recycling steps that allow materials to be used more than once.
All kinds of materials can be recycled. Some of the most common things in use today include recycling plastic, glass, metals and paper. Things made of these materials include soda cans, plastic milk boxes, newspapers, computers and cardboard boxes.
There are a number of advantages for recycling. These include: Landfills—Recycling materials means less rubbish and saves space in landfills. Resources—When we use materials again, this means we can take fewer resources from the earth. Pollution—in general, recycling materials can produce less pollution, helping to keep our environment clean.
Be sure to recycle everything you can in your house and school. There is almost a “recycle” rubbish can around. Be sure to drop your used aluminum (铝) cans and plastic bottles there. At home, be sure to put paper things like the newspapers, paper boxes, and homework pages into the recycling box.
Plastics are usually marked with an identification code that shows a recycling symbol and a number from 1 to 7. This shows that the type of chemicals or materials is used in making the plastic. Used paper can be recycled around seven times.
It is high time we set up a recycling station in every street, across the city and the country, so the cleaners can transport the rubbish smoothly. This is the only way cut for handling rubbish without causing danger to the environment and our health. For ourselves, our children and our children’s children, let’s take action NOW!

When I was twenty-seven, I went back to college. I would take a college math class but I found it too hard to learn math well.
I sat behind a young man. At the first look, he looked like a thug. I didn’t like how he looked and thought he would never be able to work out any math problem.
One day in math class, we were learning a new formula (方程式). It was so hard for me that I didn’t do well. I moved backward and forward in my chair and looked upset.
The “thug” who sat in front of me turned around and said, “Let me see what you got.” It turns out that he was very good at math. He explained the formula to me slowly. About 10 minutes later, I worked it out.

Reading poetry helps Zhu stay calm and he never complains about hard work. “Whenever I face any difficulty, I think of Chairman Mao’s quotation (语录): ‘Nothing in the world is difficult for one who sets his mind to it’, ”he told China Daily.
