For many, denim (牛仔布) is a type of cloth; but for London-based artist Ian Berry, it’s a creative medium. For the last two decades, Berry has used the navy blue cloth to create various portraits (肖像), and even photorealistic descriptions of California. And his latest creation continues to reveal the unexpected and innovative ways denim can be used. Titled Secret Garden and recently on display at the Garden Museum in London, this work reimagines a peaceful setting with a fish pond, flowers, and plants — all made from recycled denim jeans.
The Secret Garden show was first exhibited at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in New York in 2017 and has since been displayed in various site-specific locations and galleries worldwide. Originally designing it for a young audience, Berry aimed to inspire children to reflect on our interaction with nature.
“The idea came from thinking many kids don’t have their own gardens and thinking of community gardens located between buildings and trying to inspire them to seek them out,” Berry says. “It also gave the opportunity to talk about sustainability as well as helping young minds think about where things come from.” The artist even showed the kids a cotton plant to explain where jeans come from. “It was amazing to see so many confused at the idea,” he recalls. “It enabled educators to talk about how in the show plants were turned into pants, then back to plants again.”
While the most recent Secret Garden show isn’t specifically designed for children, it still arouses a childlike sense of wonder. Visitors can walk through the denim garden path and find plants hanging above them. Various plants and flowers are depicted in shades of indigo (靛蓝色). There’s even a peaceful pond at the heart of the garden, featuring denim koi fish, and a central water feature. Every area of the garden showcases such an impressive level of details that it’s easy to forget that the entire show is handmade from denim.
24. What did Ian Berry use denim for?
A. A kind of cloth for clothing. B. Covers for various portraits.
C. Bags for flowers and plants. D. Materials for his works of art.
25. What’s the aim of the Secret Garden show?
A. To raise children’s awareness of nature. B. To get children in New York interested in art.
C. To tell the great use of denim in daily life. D. To explain how to recycle denim jeans.
26. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Children’s lack of nature knowledge. B. People’s confusion about Berry’s art.
C. Motivation of Berry’s artistic creation. D. Process of plant of different periods.
27. What is the characteristic of the show described in the last paragraph?
A. Costly. B. Complicated. C. Abstract. D. Lifelike.

The first thing most of us do when working with people from a new culture is to learn about differences. And there are very sensible reasons to do so. It helps you avoid cultural misunderstandings. But focusing on differences alone can have its downsides. For one thing, there’s a likely chance you’ll be wrong. Focusing on differences can also be quite mentally taxing. So, if you don’t focus on differences, what then can you do to be more effective across cultures? In our experience, an equally reasonable and highly effective alternative technique is to focus on similarities. And this change in perspective can have some pretty powerful effects.
If you think about it, this is probably exactly how you establish connections and relationships in your own culture. You don’t approach a person thinking about all the potential ways you could be different; instead, you naturally gravitate to similarities, finding things you might have in common to form the basis of a relationship. Although we tend to approach cross-cultural interactions quite differently, the same technique actually works just as well across cultures. When focused on similarities, you’re open to — and, in fact, looking for — a potential connection. Perhaps it’s a hobby you share in common with a coworker, or maybe both of you at a business meeting abroad have families you’re trying to connect with. By focusing on similarities you have the power to create connections and build relationships that either eliminate cultural differences or make them irrelevant.
Another advantage of this approach is that your coworkers are more likely to feel that you see them as an individual. On the other hand, focusing on similarities means you are suited to the particularities of the specific person you are interacting with. This is more likely to result in the other party feeling seen and heard for who they are, and can kick off a positive lift of mutual (相互的) openness and trust.
28. Why do people focus on differences in a multicultural company?
A. To emphasize their own culture. B. To reduce unnecessary troubles.
C. To take advantage of other culture. D. To make the workplace multicultural.
29. What’s the significance of focusing on similarities in a multicultural company?
A. The origin of the hobbies. B. The start of work efficiency.
C. The foundation of connections. D. The improvement of your family.
30. What does the underlined word “eliminate” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Maintain. B. Strengthen. C. Remove. D. Worsen.
31. Which is the advantage of focusing on similarities in the last paragraph?
A. Making others feel valued. B. Making yourself centred.
C. Indicating your interest. D. Making others adapt to your culture.

More than 3 million square kilometers of the Asian elephant’s historic habitat range has been lost in just three centuries, a new report from an international scientific team led by a researcher at University of California San Diego reveals. This dramatic decline may underlie present-day conflicts between elephants and people, the authors argue.
Developing new insights from a unique data set that models land-use change over three centuries, the research team led by Shermin de Silva found that habitats suitable for Asian elephants have been cut by nearly two-thirds within the past 300 years.
The largest living land animal in Asia, endangered Asian elephants inhabited grasslands and rainforest ecosystems that once crossed the continent. Analyzing land-use data from the years 850 to 2015, the researchers describe in the journal Scientific Reports a troubling situation in which they estimate that more than 64% of historic suitable elephant habitat across Asia has been lost. While elephant habitats remained relatively stable prior to the 1700s, land-use practices in Asia, including forest decrease, farming and agriculture, cut the average habitat size more than 80%, from 99,000 to 16,000 square kilometers.
The study also suggests that the remaining elephant populations today may not have enough habitat areas. While 100% of the area within 100 kilometers of the current elephant range was considered suitable habitat in 1700, the proportion (比例) has since declined to less than 50% by 2015. This sets up a high potential for conflicts with people living in those areas as elephant populations change their behavior and adjust to more human-dominated spaces.
“In the 1600s and 1700s there is evidence of a dramatic change in land use, not just in Asia, but globally,” said de Silva, an assistant professor in the School of Biological Sciences’ Department of Ecology, Behavior and Evolution, and founder of the nonprofit Trunks &Leaves. “Around the world we see a really dramatic transformation that has serious consequences that last even to this day.”
32. What did the new report focus on?
A. The number of conflicts between elephants and people.
B. Changes of the living habitats for Asian elephants.
C. The measures taken for agricultural models of land-use.
D. Ways to deal with conflicts between man and animals.
33. What’s the main cause of elephant habitat loss?
A. The increase of elephant population.
B. People’s living styles in the past 300 years.
C. Human activities in elephants’ ecosystems.
D. Endangered elephants’ bad health conditions.
34. What’s de Silva’s attitude towards the environment?
A. Positive. B. Concerned.
C. Tolerant. D. Indifferent.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. Conflicts between elephants and humans.
B. Human activities’ influence on Asian elephants.
C. Necessary change for elephant populations.
D. Loss of Asian elephants’ habitat range.

Anika pulled her wheeled suitcase behind her when following her parents through the airport. She looked all around her in the huge building that seemed to be filled with thousands of people. It was going to be her first time on an airplane. She was very excited or rather just a little nervous. She hugged her favorite doll tight. That made her feel better.
She walked down the narrow aisle of the plane to find her seat with her parents. The tall flight attendant smiled at her and asked where they were going. “A world-famous entertainment resort,” Anika said with a smile.
“I think so,” replied the flight attendant. “Most of the families on this flight are headed that way.” She pointed to her name tag. “I'm Leanne. Let me know if you and your pretty doll friend need anything.”
“Thanks. I'm Anika, and this is Pansy,” said Anika, holding the doll up to show her. “Nice to meet you both,” replied Leanne. The flight was a few hours so she read a book with Pansy and did some puzzles her mother had packed for the trip. Soon she was getting a little tired and bored too.
Anika’s mom suggested she get some sleep, asking for a pillow and a blanket. Anika tucked Pansy under the blanket and fell asleep quickly. In no time, it seemed, she was being woken up again because it was time to land. They had arrived!
She wasn’t quite awake yet. Her mother and father were busy packing up. They picked up their bags and jackets, ready to leave the plane. Leanne walked past them, collecting the pillows and blankets from the passengers.
“Bye, maybe I will see you next week on your return flight home,” Leanne said and waved goodbye to Anika and the other passengers as they left the plane.
As Leanne shook out the blankets she had gathered from the seats, the flight attendant was surprised when a doll fell out onto the floor. She picked it up and recognized it as the doll young Anika had shown her.

【答案】28. B 29. C 30. C 31. A
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了在多文化公司中,人们应该更多地关注相似之处而不是差异。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“The first thing most of us do when working with people from a new culture is to learn about differences. And there are very sensible reasons to do so. It helps you avoid cultural misunderstandings.(当我们与来自新文化的人合作时,我们大多数人做的第一件事就是了解差异。这样做有一些非常明智的理由。它有助于你避免文化误解。)”可知,在多元文化公司中,人们关注差异是为了减少不必要的麻烦。故选B。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“You don’t approach a person thinking about all the potential ways you could be different; instead, you naturally gravitate to similarities, finding things you might have in common to form the basis of a relationship.(当你接近一个人时,你不会思考你们所有可能不同的地方;相反,你会自然地被相似性所吸引,找到你们可能共有的东西,以此作为关系的基础。)”可知,在多元文化公司中关注相似性可以建立联系的基础。故选C。
【30题详解】

【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Another advantage of this approach is that your coworkers are more likely to feel that you see them as an individual.(这种方法的另一个优点是,你的同事更有可能觉得你把他们当作个体来看待。)”等内容可知,关注相似性的优势是让别人感到被重视。故选A。

She was very excited, or rather just a little nervous.

【答案】
With duties to complete, she couldn’t run after the family and return it. Leanne felt a bit worried. She knew how much the doll meant to Anika. After finishing her tasks, she took the doll to the lost-and-found office at the airport. She carefully filled out a form, describing Anika and the details of the flight. She hoped that Anika would come to claim it. Every time she thought about the little girl’s disappointed face if she found out Pansy was missing, she felt a pang of guilt.
A week later, when she boarded the plane, Anika was surprised to see Leanne again. Anika’s eyes were red and swollen as she had been crying over the loss of Pansy. Leanne quickly walked over to her with a big smile and held out Pansy. “Is this what you’ve been looking for?” she asked. Anika's face lit up instantly. She hugged Leanne tightly and then grabbed Pansy, tears of joy streaming down her face. “Thank you so much! I was so sad without her,” Anika said. Leanne patted her head and said, “I knew you must be heartbroken. I’m glad I could return her to you.” And then, they started a pleasant conversation as the plane took off on its return journey.
