This Kung Fu demonstration by Shaolin monks (僧人) was a highlight of the 2023 Shaolin Cultural Day,a rare cultural event for the Orange County community in Southern California.
“The event offers a unique opportunity for the Orange County community to actively engage with Shaolin culture and gain firsthand experience in various Shaolin activities,” said Anne Shih, chairwoman of the Board of Governors of Bowers Museum. “Whether it's learning from Kung Fu masters or enjoying interactive Shaolin activities, these experiences will help audiences to experience the Chinese culture and better understand Chinese traditions,” Shih said.

[2024·湘豫名校联考高三上期中]Bill Gates once said,“I choose a lazy person to do a hard job. Because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.” If the fact that these words were said by one of the most financially successful people in human history doesn't tell you something, I'm not sure what will. There is a lot to be said for taking the shortcut,as it can so often save you both time and effort that you didn't actually need to waste.
How often do you follow a path in a park, only to see the grass has been trampled (踩) on by so many cornercutters that it's formed its own little shortcut? These little shortcuts are called “desire paths”,as they basically tell the world that these are people who would go the way they want rather than the way others want them to. If there is a way for them to get where they need to be without wasting any extra effort, you can be sure they will go for it.
We don't always need to make things unnecessarily hard for ourselves,so working out an easier way is always worth celebrating. After all, taking shortcuts isn't always a bad thing in life. You can be sure that the bicycle was invented by someone who was sick of walking, not to mention the invention of the wheel probably came about after someone decided they didn't want to carry everything anymore.
From finding a better way to go about a given task in work to figuring out a quicker route on the journey home,it all comes back to the idea of working smarter being better than working harder. You don't need to wait for a path to be carved out for you. If your mind has worked out a way to make things easier for yourself and get the job done quickly then go ahead and do it.
24.Why are Bill Gates' words mentioned?
A.To present a fact. B.To clarify a concept.
C.To explain a rule. D.To introduce a topic.
25.What is advised to do according to the author?
A.Go your way rather than others'.
B.Treat taking shortcuts properly.
C.Learn from the lazy persons.
D.Make things hard for yourself.
26.What can be learnt from the inventions of bicycles and wheels?
A.Those inventions satisfy the need of lazy people.
B.Most greatest inventions were created by geniuses.
C.Finding a better way to do things is their motivation.
D.Any attempt to make things easier will surely be rewarded.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Easier Said than Done
B.Better Early than Late
C.Work Smarter, Not Harder
D.Take More Shortcuts in Life

[2024·山东省济宁市高三上学期期中]The beautiful island country of Madagascar has a serious school shortage. About a third of Malagasy children have no access to education because the schools are too far away or severely overcrowded. Thinking Huts,a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing global access to education, plans to tackle the issue with a series of 3Dprinted schools, the first of which was completed in April 2022.
The 765squarefeet structure, named Bougainvillea, will house 30 students. The construction began with the printer pouring a cementlike(水泥状) mixture in a pattern to create the walls. The entire process took just 18 hours! The roof, doors and windows were locally sourced, and the walls were made of a cement mixture that can resist big environmental pressures in the area. Bougainvillea was 3D printed by 14 Trees,a company with experience printing buildings throughout Kenya and Malawi.
Maggie Grouts, the 22yearold founder of Thinking Huts,is a senior at the University of Colorado and was just 15 when she started Thinking Huts. Adopted from a rural village when she was 18 months old,Grout realized that not all kids were as fortunate as her and wanted to help. The idea for the 3Dprinted schools came to her after brainstorming with her father on ways to use the technology for the greater good.
The 3D printing approach shrinks the construction turnaround time from months to days, as well as the cost. This allows more schools to be built in less time and reduces the building's carbon footprints. And these savings in time, cost and materials meet a real need for education infrastructure (基础设施) to help bridge the global opportunity gap.
“Thinking Huts hopes to have a Thinking Hut in every community where children do not have a place for education and is fundraising to develop this goal. By using 3D printing,we are combining the potential of technology with architectural solutions that tackle real problems the world faces within education,” says Grouts.
28.What are 3Dprinted schools intended for?
A.Reducing construction wastes.
B.Helping deal with a shortage of schools.
C.Providing highquality education for local students.
D.Drawing public attention to 3Dprinting technology.
29.Which of the following statements best describes Bougainvillea?
A.It has a complex architectural structure.
B.It features strong resistance to bad weather.
C.It is built with the help of the local government.
D.It can hold more students than traditional schools.
30.What can be inferred about Maggie Grouts from the text?
A.She is truly creative and warmhearted.
B.She had no access to school as a child.
C.She is devoted to designing 3Dprinted products.
D.She raised money for kids from rural areas.
31.What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 4?
A.The advantages of 3Dprinted schools.
B.The wide popularity of 3Dprinting technology.
C.The significance of narrowing the global opportunity gap.
D.The impact of 3Dprinted buildings on the environment.

[2024·福建省部分地市校第一次质量检测]When driving,ClaraMarina Martinez takes down any unusual behaviour she sees on the road. She then feeds these into machinelearning algorithms (算法), a form of AI,which are intended to produce a system reliable enough for a car to drive itself without any disturbance from the driver, and cope with all situations on the road. But this proving hard to achieve, carmakers choose to scale__back many attempts to do so. Last year, for instance,Uber,a ridehailing service, sold off its unit developing selfdriving cars at a low price.
Autonomous vehicles are boasted as being not just convenient but potentially safer. However, just as people take time to learn how to drive safely, machines are no exception. The RAND Corporation, an American thinktank, calculates that to develop a system 20% safer than a human driver,a fleet of 100 selfdriving cars would have to operate 24 hours a day,365 days a year, and cover 14 billion kilometres. At average road speeds, that would take about 400 years.
Carmakers such as Porsche therefore accelerate the development process using simulators (模拟器). These teach software about danger only rarely encountered in reality. Dr Martinez and her colleagues employ “game engines”,the programs that generate photo realistic images in computer games,to do this. These are used to create virtual worlds through which the software can drive.
How quickly,if ever, all this will translate into reality remains to be seen. Both regulators and customers will need to overcome doubt that a software driver really can be safer than human. From Porsche's point of view, though, there is one other relevant question. Given that much of the reason for owning a sports car is for owners to show off what they regard as their driving skills, just how big a market will there be for a version where software takes those boasting rights away?
32.What do the underlined words “scale back” mean in Paragraph 1?
A.Make. B.Overlook.
C.Encourage. D.Reduce.
33.The learning process of autonomous vehicles' safe driving can be described as ________.
A.timeconsuming B.fastpaced
C.thoughtprovoking D.welldesigned
34.What challenge do autonomous vehicles bring to Porsche?
A.Ensuring the pleasure of driving.
B.Making their sports cars affordable.
C.Removing public doubts about safety.
D.Integrating game engines into their vehicles.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Porsche:Sports Cars at Risk
B.Selfdriving Cars:Still Some Way to Go
C.Simulators:The Core of Autonomous Vehicles
D.Machine Learning Algorithms:The Arrival of AI

[2024·安徽省名校联盟高三大联考]Gesturing is powerful and important to our conversations. The challenge is to use it to good effect. Here are some tips that can help you take advantage of gesturing.
Encourage gesturing in your children, students and anyone else you are trying to teach. __36__ Gesturing while learning will also make them more likely to solve the same problem in a new way. That is important because being able to generalize what we learn is essential to acquiring new knowledge.
__37__ While learning to talk, children typically convey sentencelike meanings in a combination of gesture and speech before using words alone—for example, pointing at a box and saying “open”. If a child fails to produce these gestureword combinations,it may be a sign that their spoken language development will be delayed, allowing you to intervene and help.
Pay attention to other people's gestures. These offer a window into the speakers' thoughts. These thoughts are often at the cuttingedge of their knowledge or address issues that are uppermost in their minds. __38__
Be careful that your gestures say what you want them to. Those you talk to will pay attention to your gestures,so choose them wisely. __39__ And if you are questioning someone, be aware that a gesture may unintentionally influence them to tell you what you want to hear rather than give their own fair answer.
Gesture more when you speak. It will help you learn and understand more. If you gesture while talking, you will remember more of what you have said. __40__ This can give you a way of seeing what others are thinking but not saying.
A.Observe the gesturing of kids.
B.Remember, gestures can reveal what you might want to hide.
C.This will help them understand the material you are conveying.
D.Whether we realize it or not, gestures are a part of our communication.
E.What's more, when you gesture, the people around you tend to do so too.
F.Noticing and responding to such gestures will help you understand their thoughts.
G.Knowing how to use gestures effectively can make you a better communicator.

(2024·江苏徐州模拟)Mama and Papa were like most parents. They wanted the best for their kids. Jeff and Jenna were like most kids. They wanted the best for themselves — the best place in front of the TV,the biggest piece of cake and the most candies.
One night, when the noisy kids were sound asleep, Mama lay awake worrying. She sighed deeply, thinking how to teach Jeff and Jenna to mend their selfish ways. Lecturing didn’t work.
As Mama lay there, she thought about how kids learn. Kids learn by doing. They learn to walk by walking. That’s the answer, thought Mama. The kids will learn to help others by helping others. But questions of who, when, and where went unanswered as she drifted off to sleep.
To her pleasure, those questions were soon answered. The next day, they happened to meet Mrs Marie, the elderly widow who lived just down the road,at the checkout line at the supermarket.
Mama asked the kids to say hello to Mrs Marie, about whom the kids were a little nervous. She was really old and kind of bent over. And there was that crooked cane she used when she walked. But the real reason they were nervous about her was that two days ago their ball had gone into her yard and knocked over some flowers in the garden and broke the glasses of the attic. They had never apologized.
When Mama and the kids were loading their groceries into the car,Mrs Marie came out of the supermarket pushing her little collapsible shopping cart.
“Where are you going?” called Mama.
“To the bus stop,” she said, “The bus goes right by my house.” “So does our car,” said Mama.

At that time, I got a job as a stage director at the Danish Royal Theater and I even made some out of theatrical costumes. However, in 2010, I decided to move to Copenhagen, Denmark and had to sell my second hat collection because I needed the money. I’ve been in Copenhagen since then and today I’m working for an advertising agency. The first time I showed my collection was when I put a few hats on the wall of my office. My friends and colleagues loved the idea and gave me a few hats of their own. I’ve collected 362 hats so far and I’m still collecting. My friends, Lotte, Michael and Ralph, have even helped me make a website where people can admire my hat collection and also sell me their hats, if they like.

After all, taking shortcuts isn't always a bad thing in life.”

参考范文:
Mama asked the kids to help Mrs Marie into the car and put her things in the trunk.“My goodness,it must be wonderful to have such helpful kids.” Mrs Marie exclaimed. When the kids realized they were being praised, they broke into a smile, leaning forward to hear better. Mama noticed their change. Here it was the chance. She asked Mrs Marie,“Is it convenient for you to live alone?”,to which Mrs Marie’s answer was definitely not. Sometimes,it was really difficult for an old lady like her to get helpers.
As the car was approaching Mrs Marie’s house, Mama made a decision. “Kids, shall we help Mrs Marie do some chores?” Sensing Mrs Marie was looking at them hopefully, the kids said yes though hesitant. Jenna helped Mrs Marie into the room, while Jeff brought in all the items. Mama pitched in and helped. Under guidance, the two of them put the items in place. With Mama’s company, they went upstairs to fix the broken attic window, and then downstairs to water the flowers in the garden. A smile flashing on her face,Mama felt relieved to see that kids had learnt to help others.
