Chinese educator Zhang Guimei, born in 1957, spent all her life helping girls’ education in China. After graduating from Lijiang Teachers College in 1990, Zhang became a middle-school teacher. Five years later, she went to teach in the mountainous Huaping county, Yunnan, a place that was totally s 1 to her.
In Huaping, she found that because of little money and old ideas, many parents didn’t support their d 2 education. Many girls dropped out of school and got m 3 at a young age.
“An educated mother would never let her children drop out of school,” Zhang said. “As long as I have one more breath, I will keep teaching in the classroom, with all my efforts, giving out e 4 I have.”
With this belief, Zhang decided to set up a f 5 high school for girls in 2002, an idea many called crazy. With help from the local government, as well as personal donations, Zhang finally founded Huaping High School for Girls in 2008.
To s 6 any student from dropping out of school, Zhang has kept a habit of visiting every student’s home, which means she may have to travel several hours deep in the mountains. So far, the school has helped around 2,000 girls from poor mountains to enter u 7 , successfully changing their lives.
Apart from providing a school, Zhang has kept encouraging them to believe that a 8 girls, they deserve (值得) everything good in the world. In the fall of 2020, Zhang o 9 the best local milk tea for her students. It surprised and excited all 468 of her students.
“I wish one day these children can drink whatever they want when they walk on the streets,” Zhang said. “If girls from the mountainous area want to leave, we just offer a hand to help them fly out to see a wider w 10 ,” Zhang told China Global Television Network.
This idea of shaping the girls’ mind is also seen in the first part of the school’s motto (座右铭): “I was built to be a mountain, not a creek.”
