The flooding washed a stream of mud into Mackoa.
Many people were sleeping when the disaster came. People said it was moving so fast that they had to run for their lives. Colombia officials say more than 200 people were killed, hundreds more injured and more than 100 people still missing.
But Colombia’s President expects those numbers to increase as rescuers search for survivors. More than 1000 soldiers and police officers were involved in that effort.

A bunch of strangers showed up at the gym in the early morning of the last Sunday of April. A few athletes were already stretching (拉伸) their arms, but most of us could hardly focus. As I was burning off last night’s wrong decision — a big meal, I saw a poster about a gym’s 21-day workout challenge, and I immediately signed up. I always wanted to train for a marathon, so I considered this as my warm-up. Besides, I needed to stop being lazy and this was my chance to make a change.
It was easy to promise on paper, but three weeks of recommended exercise routines and diet restrictions (限制) wouldn’t be easy. I stuck to working out 30 minutes a day, and I didn’t disturb (干扰) my normal routine. Instead, I had to be faced with the tough work of being more creative in my spare time, thus breaking some bad habits.
Overcoming weaknesses with willpower was my goal for the next part of the journey. But the difficult part about making a challenge is realizing that “wanting” and “doing” are two very different things. Just like a career, you have to physically work for it rather than just wait for it to happen. But that’s hard. Throughout the 21 days, I often told myself that the challenge was meaningless and tried to sabotage myself from exercising. However, finally I got over that negative thought and kept working out.
At the end of the challenge, I learned something even more important: Feeling the results is better than seeing them. I had fewer headaches and more energy, and was simply happier. I even felt a little smarter as I researched which foods were better for my body, and learned how to make healthier meals. I felt a sense of achievement, too, because even though I wanted to give up dozens of times, I didn’t. I felt my waist got a little bit smaller and my arms got even stronger, and I no longer felt guilty after having a piece of cake or a drink.
24. What can be inferred about the author’s previous state before signing up for the challenge?
A. He was a regular gym-goer with a strict diet.
B. He was physically fit but lacked drive.
C. He was an athlete preparing for a major competition.
D. He had an unhealthy lifestyle and needed a change.
25. What was the most difficult part of the challenge for the author?
A. Physical tiredness from the workouts.
B. Refusing the invitation of junk food.
C. Overcoming negative thought and self-doubt.
D. Adjusting to the new diet plan.
26. What does the underlined word “sabotage” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Promote. B. Prevent. C. Improve. D. Support.
27. Which of the following words can best describe the author?
A. Adventurous and impatient B. Determined and strong-willed
C. Active and casual D. Inspiring and changeable
D 25. C 26. B 27. B
根据第一段中“As I was burning off last night’s wrong decision — a big meal, I saw a poster about a gym’s 21-day workout challenge, and I immediately signed up.(当我正在因昨晚的错误决定而煎熬时——一顿大餐,我看到了一张关于健身房21天健身挑战的海报,我立刻报名。)”和“Besides, I needed to stop being lazy and this was my chance to make a change.(此外,我需要停止懒惰,这是我做出改变的机会。)”和最后一段中“I had fewer headaches and more energy, and was simply happier. (我的头痛更少,精力更多,并且只是更快乐)”可知,作者之前吃大餐,懒惰,因而身体不健康,有头痛、压力等问题,由此可推知,作者在报名参加挑战之前生活方式不健康,并且需要改变。故选D。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“But the difficult part about making a challenge is realizing that “wanting” and “doing” are two very different things. Just like a career, you have to physically work for it rather than just wait for it to happen. But that’s hard. Throughout the 21 days, I often told myself that the challenge was meaningless and tried to sabotage myself from exercising. However, finally I got over that negative thought and kept working out.(但是,制定一个挑战的困难之处在于意识到“想要”和“做到”是两件截然不同的事情。
根据划线单词上文“I often told myself that the challenge was meaningless (我经常告诉自己,挑战毫无意义)”和下文“However, finally I got over that negative thought and kept working out.(但是,最终我克服了那种负面的想法,并继续努力)”可知,作者在接受挑战时常常会有消极想法,认为挑战没有意义,所以会阻止自己锻炼,由此可推知,划线单词意为“阻止”,与Prevent意义相近。
根据最后一段中“I felt a sense of achievement, too, because even though I wanted to give up dozens of times, I didn’t.(我也感到一种成就感,因为即使我数十次想放弃,但是我也没有放弃)”可知,作者多次想放弃,但是都坚持下来了,这说明作者有决心,意志坚定,故选B。

In today’s competitive society, it seems everyone is talking about “self-care”. Michela Luciani, an assistant professor of nursing at the University of Milano-Bicocca in Italy, refers to “self-care” as trying to stay healthy and prevent diseases. However, the term has been used over time by companies and influencers to sell products that encourage people to focus on themselves, adding to greater loneliness in society.
Examples of this trend are all over social media, where companies promote a series of self-care products, from skincare products to hair-growth solutions. Taking advantage of the growing interest in mental health, influencers have produced an increasing number of sponsored (有赞助的) videos on platforms like YouTube, showing their daily self-care habits. By 2022, a $5.6 trillion (about 40.47 trillion yuan) global wellness market had appeared “under the mask of helping consumers buy their way to peace”, said Allie Volpe, a senior reporter at Vox.
Consumerism (消费主义) might offer short moments of happiness, but it fails to deal with the deeper problems behind a lack of well-being. Instead, it creates a pattern where consumers turn to self-care products, only to be trapped by unhealthy social comparisons and too much self-focus. This selfishness pulls them away from others, leading to loneliness rather than connection, according to psychologist Maytal Eyal.
But why are people drawn to consumerist self-care? Eyal points to individualism (个人主义) as the key. She sees that in today’s society, asking for help is often seen as embarrassing, while independence is praised as the highest goal. When people are told they are totally responsible for their own happiness, they feel forced to deal with it alone. The drive for perfection also encourages the want to buy more self-care products. Social media especially encourages us to stay calm and positive, selling both impossible images and expensive “solutions”.
While consumerist self-care focuses on the individual, true self-care means connecting with others. As Eyal puts it, if we can find a balance between caring for ourselves and caring for others, real self-care could be our lifeline.
28. How do companies and influencers misuse the term “self-care”?
A. They promote self-care as a way to build social connections.
B. They use it to sell products by stressing self-focus.
C. They encourage people to share their self-care experiences.
D. They define it as a form of mental health improvement.
29. Why are people attracted to consumerist self-care according to Maytal Eyal?
A. Because they want to show off their wealth.
B. Because they believe it can truly solve their problems.
C. Because of individualism and the drive for perfection.
D. Because they enjoy the short moments of happiness it brings.
30. What is the key to true self-care according to the passage?
A. Buying as many self-care products as possible.
B. Focusing only on one’s own well-being.
C. Finding a balance between self-care and caring for others.
D. Avoiding any form of social comparison.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Lonely People Trapped by Self-care
B. The Rise of Self-Care Products in the Market
C. The Influence of Consumerist Self-Care
D. How Social Media Shapes Our Self-Care Choices
B 29. C 30. C 31. C
根据第一段中“However, the term has been used over time by companies and influencers to sell products that encourage people to focus on themselves, adding to greater loneliness in society.(但是,随着时间的推移,该术语已被公司和网红使用,以销售鼓励人们专注于自己的产品,从而加剧了社会中的孤独感)”可知,公司和网红通过强调自我关注来销售产品来滥用“自我关怀”这个词,故选B。
根据第四段中“But why are people drawn to consumerist self-care? Eyal points to individualism (个人主义) as the key. (但为什么人们会被消费主义式的自我关怀所吸引呢?Eyal指出,个人主义是关键所在)”和“The drive for perfection also encourages the want to buy more self-care products. (对完美的追求也促使人们想要购买更多的自我关怀产品)”可知,Eyal认为人们被消费主义的自我关怀所吸引是因为个人主义和对完美的追求。故选C。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“As Eyal puts it, if we can find a balance between caring for ourselves and caring for others, real self-care could be our lifeline.(正如Eyal所说,如果我们能在关爱自己和关爱他人之间找到平衡,真正的自我关怀就能成为我们的生命线)”可知,真正的自我关怀的关键是在自我关怀和关心他人之间找到平衡。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“ In today’s competitive society, it seems everyone is talking about “self-care”. Michela Luciani, an assistant professor of nursing at the University of Milano-Bicocca in Italy, refers to “self-care” as trying to stay healthy and prevent diseases. However, the term has been used over time by companies and influencers to sell products that encourage people to focus on themselves, adding to greater loneliness in society.(在当今竞争激烈的社会中,似乎每个人都在谈论 “自我关怀”。
D
If you speak more than one language, you may have had the experiences of them mixed in your sleep. But how and why do our brains come up with these multilingual (多语言的) dreams and could they have an impact on our real-life language skills?
To understand the relationship between sleep and language, let’s start with just one language: your own. You may think you mastered your native language long ago, but you are actually still endlessly updating it. Even adults still learn about one new word every two days in their mother tongue.
It’s during sleep that the integration (整合) of old and new knowledge happens. During the day, our hippocampus, which specializes in absorbing information quickly, takes in new words. At night, it passes the new information on to other parts of the brain, where it can be stored and connected to other relevant information.
What we do know is that aside from processing daytime information, our brain can also learn new words while asleep. Matthieu Koroma, a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Liège in Belgium, conducted a number of studies of how and when we deal with language in our sleep. “Basically, the message is that you are able to learn words in other languages during sleep, even new languages you never heard before, but you do it in a very different way than when you are awake,” he says.
Does all this mean we can easily learn a language in our sleep, as long as we play a language lesson all night long? Not necessarily. “It might actually backfire, by disturbing your rest,” Koroma says. He also points out that in the study, people learned the words much faster when they were awake than when they were asleep: “It’s more effective when you’re awake. Wakefulness is good for learning, and sleep is more to replay, not for new language getting,” Koroma adds. “It’s an interactive process, which means that you learn during the day, and during sleep you process this information, build up some of your memories, and try to put it in new contexts.”
Koroma further explains the practical significance of his research. “The best way to do it is probably to learn a new language before going to sleep, and then play some of the words you just heard, while being asleep,” says Koroma. “Here the results are mostly that if you play them quietly enough, it will improve your learning abilities. But if you play it too loudly, it will actually bring down you learning ability. So there is some fine-tuning.”
32. Matthieu Koroma’s research shows that ______.
A. we can learn new languages as effectively during sleep as when awake
B. playing a language lesson all night long is the best way to learn a language
C. we can learn words in other languages during sleep, but in a different way
D. sleep is more important than wakefulness for new language getting
33. What does the author mean by “it might actually backfire” in Paragraph 5?
A. Playing a language lesson all night long may have a negative effect.
B. Learning a new language during sleep is useless.
C. It is better to learn a language when awake.
D. Sleep is not suitable for learning new languages.
34. What is Matthieu Koroma’s attitude towards learning a language during sleep?
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Indifferent. D. Careful.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The relationship between sleep and multilingual dreams.
B. How the brain processes language during sleep and its effects.
C. The effective ways of learning a new languages during sleep.
D. The role of the hippocampus in language learning.

根据第四段中“Matthieu Koroma, a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Liège in Belgium, conducted a number of studies of how and when we deal with language in our sleep. “Basically, the message is that you are able to learn words in other languages during sleep, even new languages you never heard before, but you do it in a very different way than when you are awake,” he says.(比利时里昂热大学的博士后研究员Matthieu Koroma对我们在睡眠中如何以及何时处理语言进行了大量研究。他说:‘基本上,这个信息是说你可以在睡眠中学习其他语言的单词,甚至是从未听过的全新语言,但你学习的方式与清醒完全不同,’他说。)”可知,Matthieu Koroma的研究表明我们可以在睡眠期间用其他语言学习单词,但是以不同的方式学习,故选C。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段中“Does all this mean we can easily learn a language in our sleep, as long as we play a language lesson all night long? Not necessarily. “It might actually backfire, by disturbing your rest,” Koroma says.(这是否意味着我们可以整夜播放语言课程,在睡眠中很容易学习语言?未必。‘It might actually backfire,因为打扰你的休息,’Koroma说)”可知,Koroma认为整夜播放语言课程,未必能使我们在睡眠中很容易学习语言,相反这会打扰我们的睡眠,即产生负面影响;由此可知,作者在第五段中说“it might actually backfire”意思是“整夜播放语言课程可能会产生负面影响”故选A。
根据第五段中“Does all this mean we can easily learn a language in our sleep, as long as we play a language lesson all night long? Not necessarily. “It might actually backfire, by disturbing your rest,” Koroma says. (这是否意味着我们可以整夜播放语言课程,在睡眠中很容易学习语言?未必。‘它实际上可能适得其反,因为打扰你的休息,’Koroma说)”以及最后一段中“ “The best way to do it is probably to learn a new language before going to sleep, and then play some of the words you just heard, while being asleep,” says Koroma. “Here the results are mostly that if you play them quietly enough, it will improve your learning abilities. But if you play it too loudly, it will actually bring down you learning ability. So there is some fine-tuning.”(‘最好的方法可能是在睡觉前学习一门新语言,然后在睡觉时播放一些你刚刚听到的单词,’科罗马说。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“If you speak more than one language, you may have had the experiences of them mixed in your sleep. But how and why do our brains come up with these multilingual (多语言的) dreams and could they have an impact on our real-life language skills?(如果你说多种语言,那么你的睡眠中可能会经历它们的经历。但是,我们的大脑如何以及为什么要提出这些多语言梦,它们会对我们的现实生活语言技能产生影响吗?)”和第二段中“To understand the relationship between sleep and language, let’s start with just one language: your own.(要了解睡眠与语言之间的关系,让我们从一种语言开始:你自己。)” 故选A。

On the first day of school, I stared in amazement at the enormous buildings. This high school was unquestionably larger than the one I had formerly gone to. It was my second year of high school but my first in St. Paul’s School. The previous night, I had determined that I would be far happier in a new school if I befriended the so-called “popular” kids. Socializing with the right crowd would surely enhance my life. I even purchased a new set of clothes and had my hair done to ensure the first day would be perfect.
Nervous yet eager to start my new life, I went up the stairs to the front entrance. The hallways were filled with children shouting, laughing, and sharing tales of their summer vacations. My first class was geometry, but I had no idea where it was.
As I stood in the hall looking confused, a short, blonde girl with glasses approached and inquired, “Are you new? You seem lost. Do you need assistance? My name is Diane. What’s yours?” Although she appeared a bit strange and was not the type of person I wanted to befriend, I decided to reply since I was indeed lost.
After introducing ourselves, I followed her up the stairs and along a hallway on the right, making small talk all the while. When we arrived at my classroom, she said, “Well, here you are. Welcome to our school, and I hope your day goes smoothly.”
I thanked her and waved goodbye. Once inside the classroom, I noticed a large group of people gathered around someone who seemed to be telling a story. I walked over and got close enough to listen in. Everyone’s attention was fixed on the guy in the middle of the circle wearing a letter jacket covered with patches. I judged that this guy must be popular, so I managed to secure a seat right next to him and said, “Hi, my name is Sara and I’m new here.” He replied, “Michael.”
At the end of the class, I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure where my next class is, could you help me?”
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Just when I was about to cry, someone came up and patted me on the shoulder.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
At the end of the class, I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure where my next class is, could you help me?” With a frown, he looked at me and then said a quick no, turned back to his friends, and walked out of the classroom. As they were walking out I heard him say, “Did you guys see that new girl trying to get into our group? That outfit’s too strange. “They all laughed and some of them turned around and stared at me. My face hot with shame, I stood stock-still, not believing what had just happened.
Just when I was about to cry, someone came up and patted me on the shoulder. It was Diane. Like a ray of sunshine, the big smile on her face swept away my gloom. I struggled to hold my feelings back and told her what I had encountered. A gleam of concern in her eyes, she said she was sorry and offered to find my next class. At that moment I realized how wrong I was in wanting to only be friends with popular people. Maybe I shouldn’t decide whether a person is worth being my friend or not by their reputation, but by who they are.
①盯着:stare at/gaze at
②发生:happen/take place
③遇到:encounter/come across/run into
①羞愧:shame/disgrace/dishonor

28 How do companies and influencers misuse the term “self-care”?
A. They promote self-care as a way to build social connections.
B. They use it to sell products by stressing self-focus.
C. They encourage people to share their self-care experiences.
D They define it as a form of mental health improvement.
C Finding a balance between self-care and caring for others.
D. Avoiding any form of social comparison.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Lonely People Trapped by Self-care
B. The Rise of Self-Care Products in the Market
C. The Influence of Consumerist Self-Care
D. How Social Media Shapes Our Self-Care Choices
