When I was about 12, I had an “enemy”, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn’t a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, and then he asked. “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time, I go to fairly clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you.”
“Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.” Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I’ve never had a better piece of advice.

In China, the year 2024 is famous as long nian. For a long time, it has been called the Year of Dragon in English. But actually, there are a lot of differences between the Chinese long and the Western dragon.
The Chinese long is made up of parts of some kind animals, such as a rabbit’s eyes and an ox’s ears. In Chinese mythology (神话), long is able to fly. Besides, it can also spray (喷洒) water from its mouth to create rain.
However, in Western culture, a dragon breathes fire and has the body of a snake and big wings of a bat. What’s more, you will find most of the Western dragons in dark colors because they usually mean evil. As a result, normally at the end of the stories, the superheroes will eat the evil dragon.
What makes such differences? Maybe because of the cultural differences. In Chinese Confucian (儒家的) ideas, kindness and harmony (和谐) are very important. Western culture, on the other hand, prefers individual heroism (个人英雄主义). Whenever something terrible happens, there will be a brave superhero standing out and saving the whole world.
In recent years, Chinese have tried to spell long in a new way. For example, Zhejiang’s Long Air has already written long as Loong because Loong sounds the same as the Chinese character long. Besides, the letters “oo” in the word Loong look like the two big eyes of the animal, which makes it easier to memorize this word.
Anyway, there is one thing for sure: the Chinese long is different from the Western dragon, and it is a symbol of good luck.
11. Which of the following is the picture of a Western dragon?
A. B. C. D.
12. According to the Chinese Confucian ideas, what might be the reason for long to spray water?
A. To fight against the evil dragon. B. To help the farmers in the dry weather.
C. To show its power and ability. D. To make itself the superhero in this world.
13. What does the underlined word “evil” in Para 3 mean in English?
A. Good things. B. Bad things. C. Meaningful things. D. Meaningless things.
14. According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A. A Chinese dragon breathes fire and has the body of a snake.
B. 2024 is the year of long in the traditional Western lunar calendar.
C. The Western dragon is a symbol of good luck.
D. The pronunciation and spelling make Loong easier to remember.
15. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Chinese long is better.
B. Western dragon is better.
C. The differences between Chinese long and Western dragon.
D. The similarities between Chinese long and Western dragon.
