Here comes a once-in-a-lifetime unforgettable experience for you!
In the 2024/2025 season, the Northern Lights this winter, which are stronger than before, are sure to catch your eye. Here is some information on how the lights happen and what can help you get ready.
The Northern Lights are created when gas particle (粒子) from earth hit charged particles from the sun. The sun’s powerful energy is usually reflected away from earth because of its powerful magnetic field (磁场), but at both the north and south poles, where the magnetic field is weaker, the solar winds break through, hitting our natural gases causing these colourful lights.
There are many Northern Lights tools that help you increase your chances of catching the lights. Among them are Aurora Forecast and Aurora Service, which will also give you a lot of information: solar rays and wind speed. There’s also Aurora Alerts that posts upcoming activity details.
When to see them? Although it is impossible to predict when the lights will appear, there is a higher chance of seeing them during the dark cold winter nights, between October to March.
Where to see them? The north coast of Norway is probably the best place in the world to see the Northern Lights. This is because Norway sits below the ‘Auroral Oval’, which almost follows the line of the Arctic Circle. The Northern Lights have been viewed much further south. In fact, during a couple of seriously strong solar flares (耀斑) last century they were viewed as far south as Hawaii.
1. Which of the following can be inferred from the text?
A. The ‘Auroral Oval’ is located exactly on the Arctic Circle.
B. The Northern Lights can be predicted accurately during the winter.
C. The Aurora Forecast only provides information about the solar rays.
D. The stronger the solar activity is, the further south the Northern Lights can be seen.
2. What causes the colorful lights in the poles of the earth?
A. The strong magnetic fields there.
B. The sun’s energy being reflected away.
C. The weaker magnetic fields there.
D. Natural winds’ breaking through.
3. Where would you probably find the article?
A. In a magazine. B. In a diary. C. In a report. D. In a novel.

As the number of data centers (数据中心) increases, they seem to disturb people’s quiet life. Rows of high-speed servers, which power almost everything the world does on phones and computers, are held in the big windowless warehouses. These warehouses are increasingly becoming a special American landscape in towns, cities and suburbs across the country.
Richard Andre Newman thought he would live the rest of his life in his quiet, leafy neighborhood in suburban Virginia. He was born and raised in Bren Mar Park, where children rode their bikes and neighbors waved hello.
But now, because he will get a new neighbor: Plaza 500, a 466,000-square-foot data center to be built near town-homes, playgrounds and a community center, Richard feels helpless and he is afraid that his life will be disturbed. Although in his sixties, he is considering selling his Fairfax County home and moving away.
Data centers has been ballooning fast in recent years because of the rapid growth of cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI), and local governments hope to compete for huge income by dealing with big tech companies. But as data centers begin to move into more populated areas, close to homes and schools, parks and recreation centers, some residents (居民) are pushing back against the world’s most powerful companies over concerns about the economic, social and environmental health of their communities.
For local governments, attracting data centers to their cities benefits their economy. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin said in 2024 that Virginia’s existing data centers brought in $1 billion for the city.
Tyler Ray, a local resident, said the taxes offered to the communities are not enough to counteract (抵消) the consequences of building data centers so close to homes.
“We know the local government is trying to bring in income, but what we are asking for is that they should do it in a way that doesn’t run residents away from their homes,” Tyler Ray said.
4. What is the windowless warehouses used for?
A. Housing some servers. B. Improving local people’s life.
C. Showing American landscapes. D. Producing phones and computers.
5. What can we infer from Richard’s experience?
A. He will sell his house at a high price. B. He prefers living in a noisy place.
C. He feels annoyed with the data center. D. He is too old to help his neighborhood.
6. Why does the local government support Data centers?
A. To protect the environment. B. To bring in more money.
C. To strengthen people’s health. D. To drive local people away.
7. What does the underlined word “ballooning” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Dropping. B. Increasing. C. Bursting. D. Removing.
A 5. C 6. B 7. B

Although in his sixties, he is considering selling his Fairfax County home and moving away.(但现在,因为他将有一个新邻居:Plaza 500,一个46.6万平方英尺的数据中心,将建在联排别墅、游乐场和社区中心附近,理查德感到无助,他担心自己的生活将受到干扰。
根据第四段“local governments hope to compete for huge income by dealing with big tech companies(地方政府希望通过与大型科技公司打交道来争夺巨额收入)”可知,地方政府支持数据中心是为了赚更多的钱。
根据划线词后文“because of the rapid growth of cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI)( 由于云计算和人工智能(AI)的快速发展)”可知,由于云计算和人工智能(AI)的快速发展,导致了数据中心迅速增加,故划线词意思是“增加”。故选B。

Affluent Neglect means that children from rich families often go unnoticed by their parents. That does not mean they suffer from hunger, lack of clothing, or poor health. Actually, the children living with Affluent Neglect are well looked after in their daily life. What they are short of is connection with parents and necessary boundaries (边界感). At the same time, they are under more pressure with more parental expectations to succeed.
The long-term influences of Affluent Neglect are quite worrying. Many children, with their parents often away working, may feel lonely and are more likely to suffer from depression. Without parents’ company, the children own freedom to explore whatever they like, but too much freedom and parental absence can leave many of them without boundaries needed. This can result in some issues such as sleeping disorder, low interests, or even taking part in risky behavior without guidance from parents.
Affluent Neglect is a real concern and it is difficult to address. Just imagine that the parents are working non-stop to provide their kids with the best living conditions, only to be told their kids feel they are unnoticed.
Fortunately, some measures can be taken to avoid Affluent Neglect. For example, setting some hours aside to have dinner with your children can make a big difference. Chatting with them over food is another way to learn how they are getting on with school, and discover what hobbies they’ve developed. Also allowing some time for “aimless” play enables children to discover their own creativity and passions. Again, encourage them to put down smart phones and instead find creative ways to pass time. Better yet, join them in some activities, such as baking, painting, or cycling!
Being parents is never easy, but making tiny changes in our routines and spending time with those who matter the most will pay off!
8. According to the passage, what may happen to children from rich families?
A. They get enough attention from parents.
B. They are able to control what they do.
C. They dislike staying with their parents.
D. They bear more expectations from their parents.
9. How are children affected by Affluent Neglect?
A. They may feel down. B. They can feel energetic.
C. They can have a sound sleep. D. They may feel independent.
10. What can parents do to prevent Affluent Neglect?
A. Stay at home every day. B. Tell what happens to teachers.
C. Allow them to play games freely. D. Climb mountains with their children.
11. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Being parents working away from home is hard.
B. Wealth brings happiness for kids from rich families.
C. Kids from rich families need more parental attention.
D. Parents should pay attention to kids’ physical health.
D 9. A 10. D 11. C
由文章第一段中“At the same time, they are under more pressure with more parental expectations to succeed. (与此同时,他们承受着更大的压力,因为父母对他们成功的期望更高)”可知,来自富裕家庭的孩子承受着父母更多的期望,故选D。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第二段中“Many children, with their parents often away working, may feel lonely and are more likely to suffer from depression. (许多父母经常外出工作的孩子,他们可能会感到孤独,并且更容易患上抑郁症)”可知,受到富足型忽视的孩子可能会感到情绪低落,故选A。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第四段“Fortunately, some measures can be taken to avoid Affluent Neglect.
通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段“Affluent Neglect means that children from rich families often go unnoticed by their parents.

Australia has passed a law that bans (禁止) individuals under the age of 16 from using social media platforms. This law, which was passed quickly by the Parliament, aims at protecting children from the possible dangers existing in the digital times.
Passed by the Senate on November 28, 2024, after just a week of discussion, the law orders that social media companies — ranging from TikTok to Instagram — carry out “reasonable measures” to ban teenagers from creating accounts. Failure to obey could result in large fines, reaching up to $32 million.
The drive for this law comes from growing concerns about the harmful effects of social media on mental health. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been supportive of the need to protect children from online bullying (霸凌), peer pressure, and harmful behaviors. The government’s viewpoint is clear: teenagers aged 16 and older are considered abler to handle online issues.
A recent survey shows that this protective measure attracts the Australian public: a striking 77% support the law. This strong support shows a societal agreement on putting children’s safety first in an increasingly interconnected world.
However, while the law sets up a clear age limit, doubts appear regarding its being put into practice. The government has decided not to require users to provide government-issued identification to prove their ages, a decision aimed at dealing with privacy concerns but one that raises doubts about how successfully these measures can be put into effect. Some experts warn that without strong and strict age proving processes, teenagers may still find ways to avoid the limits.
12. What caused the Australian government to pass the law?
A. Improving children’s abilities to solve problems.
B. Worrying about teenagers’ mental health.
C. Protecting children from school bullying.
D. The influences of teenagers’ bad behaviour on society.
13. What’s the attitude of most Australians to the law?
A. Unclear. B. Disagreeable. C. Supportive. D. Indifferent.
14. Why do some people doubt whether the law can be carried out successfully?
A. Because age proving processes waste time.
B. Because it’s easy to give away the users’ privacy.
C. Because it’s difficult to ensure the users’ age.
D. Because the law doesn’t win parents’ approval.
15. What can be the best title of the passage?
A. A New Ban in Australia to Protect Its Young Citizens.
B. A New Law in Australia Banning the Use of Social Media.
C. A New Ban in Australia to Protect Children from Dangers.
D. A New Law in Australia Banning Children from Using Social Media.
B 13. C 14. C 15. D
由文章第三段中“The drive for this law comes from growing concerns about the harmful effects of social media on mental health. (推动这项法律出台的是对社交媒体对心理健康有害影响日益增长的担忧。)”可知,澳大利亚政府通过这项法律的原因是担心青少年的心理健康。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第四段中“A recent survey shows that this protective measure attracts the Australian public: a striking 77% support the law. (最近的一项调查显示,这一保护措施得到了澳大利亚公众的青睐:高达77%的人支持该法律。)”可知,大多数澳大利亚人对这项法律持支持态度。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。由文章最后一段中“The government has decided not to require users to provide government-issued identification to prove their ages, a decision aimed at dealing with privacy concerns but one that raises doubts about how successfully these measures can be put into effect. Some experts warn that without strong and strict age proving processes, teenagers may still find ways to avoid the limits. (政府已决定不要求用户提供政府颁发的身份证明来证实其年龄,这一决定旨在应对隐私方面的担忧,但也引发了对这些措施能否有效实施的质疑。一些专家警告说,如果没有严格有力的年龄证明程序,青少年仍可能找到规避限制的方法。)”可知,一些人怀疑这项法律能否成功实施是因为很难确保用户的年龄。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段“Australia has passed a law that bans (禁止) individuals under the age of 16 from using social media platforms. This law, which was passed quickly by the Parliament, aims at protecting children from the possible dangers existing in the digital times.(澳大利亚已通过一项法律,禁止16岁以下未成年人使用社交媒体平台。该法律迅速获得议会通过,旨在保护儿童免受数字时代可能存在的危险。)”可知,文章主要讲述了澳大利亚通过了一项禁止16岁以下未成年人使用社交媒体的法律,旨在保护儿童免受数字时代可能存在的危险。因此,最适合作为文章标题的是D项“A New Law in Australia Banning Children from Using Social Media (澳大利亚通过一项新法律禁止儿童使用社交媒体)”。
Life is full of disconnected events, and memory allows us to connect those events and form our stories. Our memories make up who we are and help us to imagine possible future scenarios (设想). How do we form new memories? ____16____.
Short-Term Memory
For new information to go into long-term memory, it must pass through short-term memory. The contents of short-term memory are forgotten rapidly and are lost unless practiced. More practice means paying more attention. Besides, we learn new knowledge by linking it to what we already understand. ____17____.
Pay Attention
Attention is necessary for creating a memory for anything. We remember what we pay attention to. ____18____. We tend to pay attention to what we find interesting, meaningful, new, surprising, and emotional. Nothing focuses the mind like surprise. For example, although one may completely enjoy a particular conversation, the same conversation a second time around would not be so interesting.
Emotional Importance
The experience of emotion strengthens our memories. Events and information that excite strong emotions also tend to matter to us. You will never forget some events, such as the joy of the birth of your first child, or your wedding day. ____19____. As time passes, our memories change from storing the specifics of what happened to storing the general meaning of the event. As the saying goes, “Time heals all wounds.”
____20____
Stress can lead to memory losses, such as the common experience of mentally blanking during a high-pressure examination or interview. Thus, worrying about how you will perform on a test may contribute to a lower test score. Such thoughts will decrease your ability to learn new information and get back previously learned information.
A. Stress Can affect Learning
B. Bad feelings Limit Learning
C. We always have to build on what we know
D. However, memories tend to become less vivid over time
E. The following tips will help you keep your memory sharp at any age
F. Memory losses usually happen because we were not paying attention
G. Therefore, memories tend to become stronger with time passing by
E 17. C 18. F 19. D 20. A
设空位于首段段尾,应是承接上文,并引出下文主题,根据前文“Life is full of disconnected events, and memory allows us to connect those events and form our stories. Our memories make up who we are and help us to imagine possible future scenarios (设想). How do we form new memories?(生活中充满了互不相关的事件,而记忆让我们把这些事件联系起来,形成我们的故事。
C项“We always have to build on what we know(我们总是要建立在我们所知道的基础上)”是对前文的进一步说明,符合文意。故选C项。
根据前文“Attention is necessary for creating a memory for anything. We remember what we pay attention to.(注意力对于任何事物的记忆都是必要的。我们会记住我们所关注的东西)”可知,本段主要讲述注意力对记忆的必要性,所以F项“Memory losses usually happen because we were not paying attention(记忆丧失通常是因为我们没有集中注意力)”是对前文的进一步说明,符合本段主题,其中paying attention为同词复现。故选F项。
【19题详解】
根据前文“You will never forget some events, such as the joy of the birth of your first child, or your wedding day.(你永远不会忘记一些事情,比如你第一个孩子出生的喜悦,或者你的婚礼)”以及后文“As time passes, our memories change from storing the specifics of what happened to storing the general meaning of the event.(随着时间的推移,我们的记忆会从储存事件的细节转变为储存事件的总体意义)”可知,前文讲述不会忘记一些重要的事,后文提及会忘记细节,由此可知,记忆会随着时间变得模糊,所以D项“However, memories tend to become less vivid over time(然而,随着时间的推移,记忆往往会变得不那么生动)”和前文构成转折关系,并引出后文。故选D项。
设空为本段小标题,根据后文“Stress can lead to memory losses, such as the common experience of mentally blanking during a high-pressure examination or interview. Thus, worrying about how you will perform on a test may contribute to a lower test score. Such thoughts will decrease your ability to learn new information and get back previously learned information.(压力会导致记忆力丧失,比如在高压力的考试或面试中精神空白的常见经历。因此,担心自己在考试中的表现可能会导致较低的考试分数。这样的想法会降低你学习新信息和回想以前所学信息的能力)”可知,本段主要讲述压力对记忆的影响,所以A项“Stress Can affect Learning(压力会影响学习)”是对本段的概括,符合主题。故选A项。

D. In a novel.
B
Tyler Ray a local resident, said the taxes offered to the communities are not enough to counteract (抵消) the consequences of building data centers so close to homes.
A. Dropping. B. Increasing. C. Bursting. D. Removing.
C
C Allow them to play games freely. D. Climb mountains with their children.
11 What is the passage mainly about?
