My arms are wrapped around The Elephant, an olive tree which is said to be more than 3,000 years old - one of the oldest in Puglia, Italy. I couldn’t be happier. Kirsten puts her hand on my shoulder and I turn, wiping away tears, and laugh. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen The Elephant up close. My sister, my mom and I came to Masseria Brancati, the small family farm that’s home to this tree and hundreds of other olive trees, seven years ago. Kirsten and I have returned now, at my request, to learn how the trees have been , which in the past few years have been faced with a disease, X fastidiosa. I became aware of the poor conditions of Puglia’s olive trees in the summer of 2018; the news came at a hard time for our family. After we returned from our first visit, we were surprised to learn Mom had a stress fracture (应力性骨折) in her foot. As a result, she was finally wheel-chaired. In the fall of 2017, she was diagnosed (确诊) with a rare disease called progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Like X. fastidiosa, it’s a killer that has no known cure (治愈方法). Now, the good news is that olive trees have hope. Certain varieties are lucky dogs, proving healthy even when exposed to X. fastidiosa. Scientists are grafting (嫁接) branches from these trees to the remaining uninfected (未受感染的) ones. The hope is that they can mix and prevent the further spread of death. My family has hope, too. The U. S. National Institutes of Health recently provided a major fund to conduct research on PSP. Before Kirsten and I leave Masseria Brancati, we return to The Elephant to say goodbye. I reach up and gently touch The Elephant one last time. I silently beg. All we can do is hope - if not for forever living, then at least for future generations who will be able to continue the traditions established in the past. 9. Why did the author visit The Elephant seven years later? A. To help her mother find the cure. B. To test a treatment on it. C. To recall her old memories. D. To check its health conditions. 10. What happened to Mom after the author’s first visit to Puglia? A. She was diagnosed with X. fastidiosa. B. She gave up traveling abroad. C. She fell from her wheelchair, D. She suffered from a killer disease. 11. Why does the author call certain trees “lucky dogs” in paragraph 4? A. They could still stay well-off despite exposure to X. fastidiosa. B They kept alive healthily with the grafted branches. C. They’ve been saved thanks to scientists’ efforts. D. They’ve prevented further spread of tree death. 12. What message does the author most want to give us? A. We should keep hopeful when life is down. B. We should protect wildlife in the right ways. C. We should carry on ancient traditions. D. We should stay with family when there is time. C Everyone loves ice cream. But Ecuadorians, particularly in Andean cities, are convinced they love it more there than anywhere else. There are art shows made about it, no celebration is considered complete without it, and it's everywhere - even early on a weekday morning. “I eat ice cream every single day,” says Javier Lasluisa, a chef in Quito. “It's an off day if I don't at least taste it.” His father and grandfather were both “ice cream men”, he says, making and selling the treat. And he and his wife recently started developing recipes for their own ice cream brand. He says it may not be daily food for all Ecuadorians. But it's a key part at any special event or festival in the Andean zone of the nation. “We are a country that values our traditions, and ice cream is a part of that,” he says. Local legend has it that Angél Lozado's great-great-great-great grandmother Rosalia SuÃrez “invented” the special style of ice cream, “helado de paila”, in Ecuador. Mr. Lozado carries on the tradition by running Helados de Paila Fifth Generation Rosalia SuÃrez. Five generations later, he says that he has a lot of extended family members running their own ice cream operations, big and small. And although he has moved toward a more industrialized approach to ice cream production, he says he still rents his services making the copper-pot (铜锅的) traditional type for weddings and parties. “One can function without ice cream, but a celebration doesn't feel complete without it,” Mr. Lozado says. “The tradition of eating ice cream is kept alive in many ways by making it the old-fashioned way.” Martina Mino Pérez, an Ecuadorian visual artist and cook, has organized several interactive art projects that revolve around (围绕) ice cream, taste, and memory. The idea was inspired, in part, by memories of a childhood birthday party and how she can feel transported back to that moment and her mother's homemade ice cream when eating lemon-flavored sweets. “Ice cream is a good way to symbolize memory,” she says. “Memory is never full; it's always incomplete. Frozen in time until it melts away (融化).” 13. What do we know about Ecuadorians? A. They are art show enthusiasts. B. They share a passion for ice cream. C. They are excellent recipe innovators. D. They often organize festival celebrations. 14. What does Angél Lozado imply about the special ice cream in Ecuador? A. It is a daily necessity for Ecuadorians. B. It is deeply rooted in family traditions. C. It is industrially produced especially for parties. D. It is primarily enjoyed by the younger generation. 15. How does Martina MiÃo Pérez look at ice cream? A. It is of inestimable emotional value, B. It is a representation of incomplete memories. C. It is a means of celebrating special occasions. D. It is a medium for preserving cultural heritage. 16. What is the author's purpose in writing the text? A. To point out the importance of celebrations. B. To display new ways of making ice cream. C. To introduce a cultural tradition. D. To publicize a trip destination. D Historic numbers of animals across the globe have become endangered or extinct. But, some of these species sit in limbo. They’re not conclusively extinct, yet they’re missing from the scientific record. Species are identified as “lost” when there hasn’t been a trace (痕迹) of them in 10 years, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. “Their populations are dropping in size, and that’s why they can’t be found. It means they are likely to be on the edge of extinction,” says Thomas Evans, a conservation scientist. There is a noticeable difference in which species are searched for and protected, as proved by a recent study co-led by Evans. The study indicates that “attractive” animals have better chances of being re-discovered. They tend to be large, cute or furry. This has allowed some “unattractive” lost species to disappear from human view when they might have been saved with measures such as habitat preservation. Historically, rodents (啮齿动物) have been one group of animals most affected by this difference. Biologist Tyrone Lavery spent 14 years studying a “lost” species: the Vangunu giant rat (老鼠), known to the people of the Vangunu Islands as “vika”. Lavery’s hard efforts paid off after he planted camera traps around the forest for six months and finally got photographic evidence (证据). Since his research came out, there haven’t been any official moves to protect the rat. In fact, before his work was published, the government had allowed more logging (伐木作业) around the vika’s habitat. But shortly after it was published, Lavery said, “All of a sudden, they’ve removed their machines, and pulled out. So officially, nothing’s happened. But it seems like there’s been a little bit of change.” While the vika could be on their way to getting vital protection, the same may not be true for all “unattractive” animals. People are often eager to go and look for large cats or other really “attractive” animals, and many people haven’t even heard of a vika. It is sad because all species on our planet are valuable. 17. What does the underlined part “sit in limbo” in paragraph 1 most probably mean? A. grow healthily. B. come to extinction. C. are in an uncertainty. D. stay under poor protection. 18. Which is a finding of the study co-led by Thomas Evans? A. Humans seem to love lovable animals more. B. The data about lost species is not reliable (可信的). C. Preservation efforts now are far from enough. D. Species became lost mostly due to human activities. 19. What was a result of Tyrone Lavery’s vika research? A. Rules were set to assist scientists. B. The vika received unofficial protection. C. The government didn’t allow cutting down trees. D. More logging was carried out around the vika’s habitat. 20. What message does the author want to deliver in the last paragraph? A. Appearance doesn’t matter. B. The more species, the better. C. Every species is worth protecting. D. Protecting the Earth takes everyone. 第二节 七选五 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Road trips are a great choice for vacation because they allow you to see different places in one trip and can be customized to what your family wants to do and see. ___21___ Here are some steps to take before you hit the road. It is really a pity that you were not feeling well and missed a wonderful lecture yesterday. Here I’m writing to inform/tell you of some detailed information. The lecture, delivered by Doctor Chen Long from Shantou University, focused on the practical ways to promote Chinese writing through reading. He began his lecture with a story, which got us aware of how reading influenced writing. Then he shared with us his ideas on how to promote writing by reading and offered helpful suggestions, such as picking out beautiful expressions and sentences and trying to apply them to our writing. Finally students took an active part in the question-and answer session, which contributed to our better knowledge of how to writing well. From my point of view, this lecture was really a hit/success, which not only stirred up our interest in writing, but also built up our confidence in Chinese writing. Hope you can make a full recovery soon so that we can enjoy reading together. Yours, Li Hua 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
