We were standing at the top of a church tower. I saw twisting streets leading to the square. “See, my dear,” Father said gently. “There is more than one way to the square.”
Father’s words always guided me. Dreaming of becoming a fashion designer, I came to Paris, but without luck. Then one day I met a friend wearing a beautiful sweater. “What an interesting stitch!” I cried. “It was done by Mrs. Vidian,” my friend explained. “She learned the stitch in Armenia, her native country.” Suddenly I had a daring idea. Why not design, make and sell my own clothes?
I drew a butterfly pattern and asked Mrs. Vidian to knit it into a sweater. It proved a success. A New York store wanted 40 sweaters to be ready in two weeks. I accepted the order. My happiness disappeared, however, when Mrs. Vidian told me it took her almost a week to knit one sweater.
I was crushed. Then I remembered father’s words. There must be other Armenian women in Paris who mastered the special stitch. Then I searched for any Armenians living in Paris. At last I tracked down several. Two weeks later, the first shipment was on its way to the United States!
From that day on orders poured in. Then came another test. As I was busy getting ready to show my winter fashions, the sewing girls were called out on strike. Where was the way out this time? I wondered and worried. Then it dawned on me.
I worked hurriedly. And right on time, my show took place. Some coats had no sleeves; some were only patterns made of heavy cotton cloth, but on these I attached material to show what colors and textures the clothes would have when they were finished. What a show! Once again father’s words helped me.
4. What problem did the writer face after accepting the order?

6. How did the writer deal with the show problem?
A. She put off the show. B. She showed the clothes unfinished.
C. She employed more sewing girls. D. She completed the clothes in a hurry.
7. Which of the following might the writer agree with?
A. Practice makes perfect. B. Like father, like son.
C. Easier said than done. D. All roads lead to Rome.

The Elephant Project is a purpose-driven company which tries to protect and recover the world’s elephant population.
This all-female organization began when founder Kristian McKean saw the inhumane(不人道的)treatment of elephants in Thailand, and again back in the United States with circus animals. Determined to find a way to support elephant causes, Kristina used her product development background to design adorable, huggable elephant dolls she named Kiki and Tembo.
Children and many adults are drawn to the stuffed animals. These elephants come with fun educational materials to spread the word about the dangerous world elephants live in.
Meanwhile, the company’s mission is clear and supported by its donations to organizations that care for elephants in need. In fact, 100% of the profit from each sail of Kiki and Tembo goes to supplies and aid for abused and injured elephants through The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya and The Elephant Nature Park in Thailand. With the fast development of astronomy, astronomers are eager to find a hint of the familiar planets that resemble Earth. By pushing technology to the limits, astronomers are rapidly approaching the day when they can find another Earth.
The most direct approach is to take a picture of it with a telescope. However, a more effective way is to use “the Doppler technique”. This involves analyzing starlight for evidence that the star’s movement is affected by the gravitational pull of a planet. Nowadays, astronomers can tell when a planet is pulling its star by only one meter a second — about human walking speed. That’s enough to detect a giant planet in a big orbit, or a small planet if it’s close to its star.
Another approach is to watch a star for a slight dip in its brightness. This occurs when an orbiting planet passes in front of the star and blocks part of its light. At most, a tenth of all planetary systems are oriented so that these mini-eclipses (日食,月食) — called transits (凌日) — are visible from Earth. So, astronomers have to monitor a lot of stars to capture just a few transits.
The dream of astronomers is to discover a rocky planet roughly the size of Earth orbiting in a habitable zone, one that is neither too hot nor too cold to support life. If they succeed, they will have found what biologists believe could be a promising residence for life.
The best places to look may be dwarf stars. Smaller than the sun, dwarf stars are plentiful; seven of the ten stars nearest to Earth are dwarf stars. They also provide a steady supply of sunlight to any life-bearing planets within their habitable zone. Additionally, dwarf stars are dim (昏暗的), so the habitable zone lies closer in. If the planet is closer to the star, it’s easier for astronomers to detect a transit observation. A close-in planet also has a stronger pull on its star. That makes it easier to detect with the Doppler method.
12. What are astronomers keen to find out?
A. Why astronomy develops so fast.
B. How technology helps observe stars.
C. Where Earth-like planets are in space.
D. What is the direct approach to finding a planet’s gravity.
13. Why do astronomers have to monitor a lot of stars to capture transits?
A. Transits last a very short period of time.
B. Most planetary systems don’t have transits.
C. Transits only occur for a small number of stars.
D. No more than 10% planetary systems have visible transits from Earth.
14. Why may dwarf stars be good places to spot Earth-like planets?
A. Dwarf stars are limited in number.
B. Their planets are close to the Earth.
C. The closeness of the habitable zone to dwarf stars aids detection.
D. The brightness of dwarf stars to Earth improves their visibility.
15. What is the author’s attitude to the discovery of another Earth?
A. Confident. B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Unconcerned.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. C 15. A

根据第一段中“With the fast development of astronomy, astronomers are eager to find a hint of the familiar planets that resemble Earth. (随着天文学的快速发展,天文学家渴望找到类似地球的熟悉行星的线索)”可知,天文学家渴望找到太空中类地行星的位置。故选C项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“At most, a tenth of all planetary systems are oriented so that these mini-eclipses (日食,月食) — called transits (凌日) — are visible from Earth. So, astronomers have to monitor a lot of stars to capture just a few transits. (最多只有十分之一的行星系统是定向的,这样在地球上就能看到这些被称为“凌日”的迷你日食。所以,天文学家必须监测很多恒星才能捕捉到一些凌日现象)”可知,天文学家必须这样做是因为从地球上观测到凌日现象的行星系统不超过10%。故选D项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Additionally, dwarf stars are dim (昏暗的), so the habitable zone lies closer in. If the planet is closer to the star, it’s easier for astronomers to detect a transit observation. A close-in planet also has a stronger pull on its star. That makes it easier to detect with the Doppler method. (此外,矮星较为暗淡,因此其宜居带更靠近恒星。如果行星更靠近恒星,天文学家更容易通过凌日观测到它。靠近恒星的行星对其恒星的引力也更强,这使得通过多普勒方法更容易观测到它)”可知,矮星是发现类地行星的好地方,因为宜居带离矮星很近,有助于观测。故选C项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“By pushing technology to the limits, astronomers are rapidly approaching the day when they can find another Earth. (通过将技术推向极限,天文学家正迅速接近能够发现另一个地球的那一天)”可知,文章首先提到天文学家有望发现类地行星,然后详细介绍了两种有效的观测方法,并指出矮星的特性为发现宜居行星提供了有利条件。文章整体语气积极且充满期待,表明作者对天文学家发现另一个地球的可能性抱有信心。故选A项。

If you’ve had a bad night’s sleep, or you’ve just got too much to do, the last thing you want to be told is to “be positive!” ____16____.
Of course, developing a positive attitude is easier said than done -it doesn’t come naturally to everyone. When you’re feeling down, it is hard to be optimistic. But a study has found that people who are optimists are more likely to live longer than those who have a more negative approach to life. So, maybe once you think of a longer life, ____17____.
The study concluded that optimists may find it easier to control emotions and get less stressed. And as stress impacts on the immune system, ____18____. Professor Lewina Lee from Boston University said: “Our findings speak to the possibility that raising levels of optimism may promote longevity and healthy aging. ”And she advises that pessimists could benefit from doing things like imagining a future where everything turns out well.
But if you’re a ‘glass half empty’ type of person, could seeing the world through rose-tinted glasses work for you? Every bean has its black. ____19____. Some people say it’s best to celebrate the positives and ignore the negative parts of our lives.
____20____. Vicki Siska says “Music feeds my soul, a sense of humour keeps things in perspective”. Pippa Kennedy says “being grateful for what you have!” Other people recommend doing yoga and meditation as well as staying fit to help maintain a positive outlook on life.
A. Accepting this helps us control our emotions
B. Accept it and make efforts to improve yourself
C. it’s possible that optimists better handle infections
D. But having this mindset could have many benefits
E. But it could help you have a positive outlook on life

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
From Lemonade Stand to Dreamland: the Boy Who Built a Home
Thirteen-year-old Ethan was no ordinary kid. While his peers were lost in video games, he managed a lemonade stand near the trailer (活动房屋) park he called home with his mother. His stand was simple - a table, a huge bottle, and a sign - but it was the cornerstone of his dream to improve his mother’s life.
Ethan’s mother worked tirelessly at several jobs to make ends meet. Their trailer was old and worn, but Ethan determined to provide her with a real house, free from worries of various house problems. He saved every penny from his lemonade sales in a box under his bed, calling it “House Fund”. Every day, he imagined it growing big enough to make his dream come true.
Ethan’s determination led him to seek additional ways to earn money. He cleaned shoes, washed windows, and assisted the elderly with groceries. Despite his long days, Ethan never let his schoolwork slip. He knew that doing well in school was key to a better future, and he dreamed of attending college one day, though he knew that the dream was even further out of reach than the house. Still, he held onto it, just as tightly as he held onto his belief that hard work would pay off someday.
One hot summer afternoon, while Ethan was manning his lemonade stand, a man in a black car pulled up. Dressed in a sharp suit, he stepped out and walked over to the stand. He seemed out of place in the run-down neighborhood, but his warm smile put Ethan at ease.
Over a glass of lemonade, he learned of Ethan’s wish to buy his mom a house. He was impressed by Ethan’s ambition and offered him a hundred-dollar bill, calling it an investment (投资) in his future. He wasn’t just generous; he sent tutors to help Ethan with his studies. With their guidance, Ethan’s grades improved dramatically, including his confidence.

【答案】Years passed, and Ethan’s hard work paid off. His lemonade stand was good, attracting more customers with its refreshing drinks and Ethan’s good manners. He continued his sideline, expanding them to include babysitting and lawn mowing, always saving diligently. He earned a scholarship to a college and after graduating with honors, he quickly found success in the business world. But through it all, he never forgot his promise.
One bright morning, Ethan stood with his mother in front of a beautiful new house. It wasn’t a mansion, but it was perfect - solid, warm, and filled with love. As they stepped inside, his mother’s eyes were filled with tears of joy. “I told you I’d build a house for you,” Ethan said, his voice thick with emotion. “Mom, this is for you. No more leaks, no more creaky floors. Welcome home, Mom.” As they stepped inside, Ethan knew that his journey was far from over, but with every obstacle overcome, his belief in the power of hard work grew stronger.

A. It was impossible for Vidian to meet the deadline. B. The sewing girls were called out on strike.
C. She found it hard to track Armenians living in Paris. D. There was a shortage of suitable cloth.
5. What do the underlined words “the first shipment” refer to in Paragraph 4?
A Raw materials. B. More orders. C. The forty sweaters. D. The special stitch.
6. How did the writer deal with the show problem?
A. She put off the show. B. She showed the clothes unfinished.
C. She employed more sewing girls. D. She completed the clothes in a hurry.
7 Which of the following might the writer agree with?
A. Practice makes perfect. B. Like father, like son.
C. Easier said than done. D. All roads lead to Rome.

The Elephant Project is a purpose-driven company which tries to protect and recover the world’s elephant population.

The Elephant Project website shows a list of elephants that have already benefited from the company with a bit of history about each elephant’s situation and progress.
C The closeness of the habitable zone to dwarf stars aids detection.
D. The brightness of dwarf stars to Earth improves their visibility.
15. What is the author’s attitude to the discovery of another Earth?
A. Confident. B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Unconcerned.
