Davyon Johnson helped save a choking classmate and a woman attempting to escape a fire. On Dec. 8, 2021 the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Department honored Johnson for his heroics at a meeting. At the event, Undersheriff Greg Martin gave the sixth-grader a certificate naming him an honorary deputy for the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office. “We are all so proud of you, Johnson!!” wrote the sheriff’s office in a post on Facebook on Dec. 14, 2021. The Muskogee Public Schools recognized Davyon Johnson during the meeting Tuesday. Principal Latricia Dawkins considered Johnson a hero in an interview. “He always says that he wants to be an emergency medical technician. So he put that desire into action and immediately saved that young man,” Dawkins said, adding that Johnson “is just a kind soul and liked by students and teachers”. The first incident happened during the school day. Johnson jumped into action after one of his classmates accidentally swallowed a water bottle cap and was choked (窒息) by it after attempting to unscrew (拧开) it with his mouth. Johnson immediately ran to the child and performed the Heimlich maneuver. Dawkins said “From the account of the witnesses, when he did it, the bottle cap came out.” Johnson said he learned how to do the Heimlich maneuver on YouTube, and suggested others do the same. Johnson’s heroism didn’t end there. After school, during the day after he saved his classmate, Johnson spotted a woman attempting to escape from a burning home. He quickly realized the worried woman was moving slowly and ran across the street to help her. “She was a disabled lady and being a good citizen, I should help her leave,” Johnson said. LaToya, the boy’s mother, said, “I don’t feel surprised at my son’s actions. I’m just a proud mom.” 4. What is Johnson’s dream? A. To be a chemistry teacher. B. To be a fashion designer. C. To be an aircraft engineer. D. To be an emergency medical technician. 5. When did Johnson save the woman? A. The next day after saving his classmate. B. Several hours after saving his classmate. C. On Dec. 8, 2021. D. On Dec. 14, 2021. 6. What is the Heimlich maneuver? A. A way to calm a person who is angry. B. A way to help a person who can’t walk. C. A way to save a person who is choking. D. A way to improve a person’s spoken language. 7. Why did the woman walk slowly? A. The heavy smoke blocked her view. B. The way was seriously blocked. C. She had a physical disability. D. She was too frightened to walk. D 5. B 6. C 7. 根据第二段第三句“He always says that he wants to be an emergency medical technician. ”(他总是说他想成为一名紧急医疗救护技术员。)可知,Johnson一直想成为一名医疗急救员。故选D。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“The first incident happened during the school day. Johnson jumped into action after one of his classmates accidentally swallowed a water bottle cap and was choked (窒息) by it after attempting to unscrew (拧开) it with his mouth. ”(第一件事发生在上学日子里。约翰逊的一个同学不小心吞下了一个水瓶盖,他试图用嘴把盖子拧开,结果被盖子噎住了,他立即采取了行动。倒数第二段中“After school, during the day after he saved his classmate, Johnson spotted a woman attempting to escape from a burning home. He quickly realized the worried woman was moving slowly and ran across the street to help her. ”(在约翰逊救了他的同学之后,放学后,他发现一个女人试图从着火的房子里逃出来。他很快意识到这个忧心忡忡的女人走得很慢,于是跑过马路去帮她。)可知,Johnson在救了他的同学的几个小时之后,又救了一位女士。故选B。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“From the account of the witnesses, when he did it, the bottle cap came out.” Johnson said he learned how to do the Heimlich maneuver on YouTube, and suggested others do the same.”(根据目击者的描述,当他这么做的时候,瓶盖掉了出来。” 根据倒数第二段最后一句“She was a disabled lady and being a good citizen, I should help her leave,” Johnson said.”(她是个残疾人,作为一个好公民,我应该帮助她离开。” C。 C Nobody knows the value of a good doll better than Jandrisevits. “Dolls have a power we don’t completely understand,” she said. It’s a conclusion she came to while working as a social worker using dolls to help her young clients adapt to their changing medical situations. Many of the kids saw themselves in those dolls. But for the kids missing a limb or who had lost their hair, there were none they could relate to. So, seven years ago, when a friend revealed that her child was stuck in self-doubt and self-distrust, Jandrisevits, now 49, knew what might help the youth through this potentially challenging period. “It’s hard to tell a kid, ‘You are perfect the way you are,’ and to build self-esteem (自尊) that way, but never offer them anything that looks like them,”she says. Jandrisevits went about changing that. She crafted a doll by hand — using fabric, stitching, and markers — that resembled (像) her friend’s child and sent it off. After the friend posted a photo online of the happy child and doll, another woman asked Jandrisevits to make a doll that looked like her baby, who was missing a leg. Word spread, and soon Jandrisevits was making dolls for children with scars, birthmarks, facial deformities(畸形), — in short, a doll that looked like them. She quit her job and started a nonprofit, A Doll Like Me. Working out of her home in Milwaukee, from photos sent by parents or caregivers, it takes Jandrisevits roughly three days to craft only one doll. A GoFundMe page helps her cover costs and allows her to donate her services. She hasn’t charged for a doll since she began her nonprofit. In all, she’s made more than 400 dolls. The waiting list is long, but Jandriscvits will never give up. As she explains on her GoFundMe page, “Every kid, regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, medical issue, or body type, should look into the sweet face of a doll and see their own.” 8. What made Jandrisevits realize the value of dolls? A. The influence of dolls on her. B. Her working experience. C. The changing medical situations. D. Her relation to the unlucky kids. 9. What does the underlined word ―that‖ refer to in paragraph 3? A. Children’s concern about their looks. B. The problems faced by the child of a friend. C. The challenging period the youth are going through. D. The fact that words alone fail to help build self-esteem. 10. What can be inferred about Jandrisevits’ making dolls? A. It targets children with mental problems. B. It is time-consuming but meaningful. C. It is thought poorly of by people. D. It brings in a good fortune. 11. Which of the following best describes Jandrisevits? A. Creative and caring. B. Ambitious and devoted. C. Considerate and sensitive. D. Knowledgeable and generous. B 9. D 10. B 11. 根据第一段的“Nobody knows the value of a good doll better than Jandrisevits. “Dolls have a power we don’t completely understand,” she said. It’s a conclusion she came to while working as a social worker using dolls to help her young clients adapt to their changing medical situations.(没有人比詹德里塞维斯更了解一个好娃娃的价值了。“娃娃有一种我们不完全理解的力量,”她说。这是她在做社会工作者时得出的结论,当时她使用洋娃娃来帮助年轻客户适应不断变化的医疗状况。)”可知,让Jandrisevits意识到洋娃娃的价值的是她的工作经验。故选B。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第二段的“It’s hard to tell a kid, ‘You are perfect the way you are,’ and to build self-esteem(自尊) that way(对一个孩子说,‘你这样就很完美’,并通过这种方式建立自尊是很难的)”及第三段的“Jandrisevits went about changing that.(Jandrisevits着手改变这种状况)”可知,光靠语言无法建立自尊,所以Jandrisevits通过制作娃娃来改变这种状况。 根据倒数第二段的“it takes Jandrisevits roughly three days to craft only one doll(Jandrisevits大约花了三天时间制作一个娃娃)”和第一段的“It’s a conclusion she came to while working as a social worker using dolls to help her young clients adapt to their changing medical situations.(这是她在做社会工作者时得出的结论,当时她使用洋娃娃来帮助年轻客户适应不断变化的医疗状况。)” 根据第三段的“She crafted a doll by hand—using fabric, stitching, and markers—that resembled her friend’s child and sent it off.(她用布料、针线和马克笔手工制作了一个娃娃,和她朋友的孩子很像,然后送了出去。)”可知,她是有创造力的,即creative;根据第二段的“So, seven years ago, when a friend revealed that her child was stuck in self-doubt and self-distrust, Jandrisevits, now 49, knew what might help the youth through this potentially challenging period.(因此,七年前,当一位朋友透露她的孩子陷入了自我怀疑和自我不信任的困境时,现年49岁的Jandrisevits知道什么可以帮助孩子度过这一充满挑战的时期。)” A。 D The future of the city is here. Sidewalk Labs, a company owned by Alphabet, won a competition to design a neighborhood by Lake Ontario. The competition was held as a way to improve the buildings, public spaces, and transportation. In total, the planning phase should last one year. The city of Toronto has promised $ 1.25 billion for roads, sidewalks, electricity, water, and so on. Sidewalk Labs has already put $ 50 million into the project. Doctoroff says he is not worried about money — profit can be made from the technology and development. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also says the project will bring well-paying jobs. The neighborhood has already been given the name “Quayside”. It will include various scientific technologies connected with environmental improvement such as heated sidewalk, bike paths to melt snow, self-driving buses, shared-ride taxi robots and narrower streets with fewer cars and more room for public spaces like parks. There will also be energy systems, changeable traffic lights, and continuous improvement through collecting and analyzing data from sensors (传感器) for monitoring traffic flow, noise levels, air quality, energy usage, travel patterns, and waste output. As for construction, the buildings will be made of plastic instead of wood or steel, to make them more affordable and easier to change. Underground passages will be used for trash collection, package delivery, and maintenance (维护). There are, of course, many concerns about the project. One concern is that making an expensive, hi-tech neighborhood won’t help with a housing crisis in Toronto. It is important for Quayside to be accessible to the elderly, the disabled, and people of diverse races and income levels. Another concern is about data collection and residents’ privacy. In response, Doctoroff says the data collection will only be used to improve the quality of life in Quayside, privacy to be built into every aspect of the neighborhood. New and unique, the futuristic neighborhood will no doubt have many issues. In spite of these, it will be interesting to see its evolution. 12. What does Paragraph 2 talk about? A. The faith in building Quayside. B. The concerns of building Quayside. C. The difficulty in building Quayside. D. The expense of building Quayside. 13. What’s the feature of the technologies in Quayside? A. Old-fashioned. B. Environmentally-friendly. C. Energy-consuming. D. Cost-effective. 14. Why does the author mention all the concerns? A. To question the possibility of the project. B. To try to find a solution to the problems. C. To show people’s disapproval of the project. D. To make people aware of the potential shortcomings. 15. What is the author’s attitude to Quayside? A. Skeptical. B. Neutral. C. Positive. D. Unfavorable. A 13. B 14. D 15. 根据第二段“The city of Toronto has promised $ 1.25 billion for roads, sidewalks, electricity, water, and so on. Sidewalk Labs has already put $ 50 million into the project. Doctoroff says he is not worried about money — profit can be made from the technology and development. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also says the project will bring well-paying jobs.(多伦多市承诺为道路、人行道、电力、水等项目投入12.5亿美元。 故选A。 根据第三段“It will include various scientific technologies connected with environmental improvement such as heated sidewalk, bike paths to melt snow, self-driving buses, shared-ride taxi robots and narrower streets with fewer cars and more room for public spaces like parks. There will also be energy systems, changeable traffic lights, and continuous improvement through collecting and analyzing data from sensors (传感器) for monitoring traffic flow, noise levels, air quality, energy usage, travel patterns, and waste output. 根据第五段“One concern is that making an expensive, hi-tech neighborhood won’t help with a housing crisis in Toronto. 和第六段“Another concern is about data collection and residents’ privacy.(另一个问题是数据收集和居民隐私。)” 根据第五段“It is important for Quayside to be accessible to the elderly, the disabled, and people of diverse races and income levels. 和最后一段“New and unique, the futuristic neighborhood will no doubt have many issues. In spite of these, it will be interesting to see its evolution. I believe in daydreaming now and then—especially when I’m hiking. Being in nature allows my mind to wander where it will, which often starts my creativity as a writer and musician. Now some new science suggests that daydreaming may actually make us happier and more creative. ___16___ Daydreaming may be good for creativity Mind—wandering has been associated with creativity for centuries. A study found that people who mind—wandered performed better on their task, the answer coming to them in a flash. ___17___ —it was just suddenly there. When people’s minds wander in ways that seem meaningful to them, they tend to have more creative ideas and feel more inspired at the end of the day, too. Interestingly, this is true for both writers and everyday people. ___18___ Now, findings from a 2021 study suggest that mind—wandering can actually improve your mood. In this study, the researchers found that when people’s thoughts were off—task, they generally felt more negative. But if their thoughts were free—moving. It had the opposite effect, helping people feel happier. ___19___ . If I simply put myself in a space that lets my mind move freely, I don’t get depressed. On the contrary, I’m happier because of it. Can we be better mind—wanderers? Researchers warn that mind—wandering when you need to be focused on a task could cause problems. So, let your mind wander when you’re doing tasks that don’t require focus. ___20___ . So, just having more control over when mind—wandering happens and the kind of thoughts that you have would be very useful. A. The key is that we do it the right way. B. Mind—wandering can help boost our mood. C. I find that science supports my own experience. D. Taking a break might be good for our productivity E. People didn’t even know how they got to the solution F. I hope people will explore the limits of mind—wandering G. This may help you feel better or come up with creative ideas 【答案】16. A 17. E 18. B 19. C 20. 【16题详解】 根据上文“Now some new science suggests that daydreaming may actually make us happier and more creative.(现在一些新的科学表明,做白日梦实际上可能让我们更快乐,更有创造力。)” 故选A项。 【17题详解】 根据上文“A study found that people who mind—wandered performed better on their task, the answer coming to them in a flash.(一项研究发现,走心的人在任务上表现得更好,答案会瞬间出现。)”和下文“it was just suddenly there.(只是突然出现。)” 本段主旨句“Now, findings from a 2021 study suggest that mind—wandering can actually improve your mood.(现在2021 年的一项研究结果表明,走神实际上可以改善你的情绪。)” 【19题详解】 根据下文“If I simply put myself in a space that lets my mind move freely, I don’t get depressed. On the contrary, I’m happier because of it.(如果我只是把自己放在一个让我的思想自由活动的空间里,我就不会感到沮丧。 【20题详解】 根据上文“Researchers warn that mind—wandering when you need to be focused on a task could cause problems. So, let your mind wander when you’re doing tasks that don’t require focus.(研究人员警告说,当你需要专注于一项任务时,走神可能会导致问题。 Ray Lucas could only think of one thing when he returned home to see the house was in fire and his mother yelling for help: He had to get to the basement if he wanted to save his twin 18-month-old daughters. Sometimes his dad took him canoeing (划独木舟) there, and Alex loved it. The pond was always alive with activity, and sometimes Alex discovered turtles (乌龟) sunbathing on suing rocks Alex as curious about turtles. When it was too rainy to go canoeing, he often went to the library to check out books on turtles, Now it looked like tomorrow might be another sunny day. He decided to ask Dad if they could go canoeing and look for turtles again. Suddenly Alex saw something in the road up ahead. It looked like a big gray rock. But it was a funny place for a rock to be. He jumped off to have a look. And then, the rock started to move! It was actually a large turtle slowly making its way across the road! Alex knew right away it was a snapping turtle. Out of the corner of his eye he saw a car approaching The turtle was still only halfway across the road Alex knew he couldn’t pick it up because snapping turtles have a powerful bite and they could even bite off someone’s finger! What could he do? Thinking fast, he started waving both hands wildly. “Stop! Stop!” he cried. The car slowed to a stop. “Are you alight, Alex?” It was his neighbor, Mrs. Ramos. “I’m fine, Mrs. Ram’s.” said Alex. “I’m just trying to save a turtle. It’s probably going to lay egg.” “Oh, yeah. It’s spring.” said Mrs. Ram’s. “So, I guess a lot of turtles need to lay their eggs in the grass across the road.” Then she waved goodbye and drove off. Alex thought about what Mrs. Ram’s had said. “There would probably be more turtles trying to cross the road at this spot!” he realized. But he couldn’t stand there all day trying to stop cars. He looked around and a road sign caught his eye. And then his face brightened. He jumped on his bike and raced home to find Dad. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The next morning, Dad and Alex drove to the pond with the wooden sign in the car. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 He jumped on his bike and raced home to find Dad. “Dad, can I have some old wood to make a wooden sign?” Alex asked eagerly. After that, Alex wrote down a line with red paint on both sides of the sign, reading “Slow! Turtles Crossing!” Work all done, they put the wooden sign into their car and went for dinner.(75 words) The next morning, Dad and Alex drove to the pond with the wooden sign in the car. Dawkins said, “From the account of the witnesses, when he did it, the bottle cap came out.” Johnson said he learned how to do the Heimlich maneuver on YouTube, and suggested others do the same. C Nobody knows the value of a good doll better than Jandrisevits. D The future of the city is here. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a car approaching The turtle was still only halfway across the road Alex knew he couldn’t pick it up because snapping turtles have a powerful bite and they could even bite off someone’s finger! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1-5 CBCBA 6-10 BACAB 11-15 ABACC 16-20 ABABC 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
