The law is meant to protect young people, but some people say it could create more problems than it solves. Under the new law, social media companies must take “reasonable steps” to prevent anyone under 16 from creating an account. If the companies do not follow the law, they could be fined up to US $32 million. Many people in Australia seem to agree. Recent surveys show that 77% of people in Australia are in favor of the law. People are worried about how social media can hurt young people’s mental health. Many people have heard stories about young people who have been bullied (霸凌) online and later hurt themselves. But not everyone agrees that the new law is a good idea. Some people believe the law will make it harder for young people to connect with others who can support them. Others worry that the social media ban (禁令) will push young people toward less safe parts of the Internet. One of the biggest problems is how the social media companies will figure out how old their users are. The law says the companies must give people a way to prove their age without sending in a government ID, but it’s not clear how this might work. The demand that the companies collect even more information raises worries about the privacy of young people. Other countries have also taken steps to limit social media use by young people. In France, people under 15 can not use social media without agreement from a parent. Countries like the UK and Norway are considering similar laws. Some US states have passed laws limiting social media for young people, though these laws have been challenged in court. 8. What does the underlined word “fined” in paragraph 1 mean? A. Added. B. Cheated. C. Punished. D. Lent. 9. What do Australians think of the new law? A. They all agree to it. B. They are all against it. C. They hold different opinions. D. They are very worried about it. 10. What is the biggest problem in carrying out the law for social media companies? A. How to find out users’ ages. B. How to use users’ ID cards. C. How to protect users’ privacy. D. How to collect users’ thoughts. 11. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us? A. Many European countries are passing similar laws. B. France also has no age limit for using social media. C. A number of laws of the US have been challenged. D. Teenagers’ use of social media has attracted global attention. C 9. C 10. A 11. 根据划线单词上文“Under the new law, social media companies must take “reasonable steps” to prevent anyone under 16 from creating an account.(根据新法律,社交媒体公司必须采取“合理措施”阻止 16 岁以下的任何人创建帐户)”和划线单词所在句子“If the companies do not follow the law, they could be fined up to US $32 million.(如果这些公司不遵守法律,可能会被fined以最高 3200 万美元)”可知,法律规定社交媒体公司必须采取“合理措施”阻止16岁以下的任何人创建帐户,所以如果有公司不遵守法律,那么他们会受到惩罚。 根据第二段中“Many people in Australia seem to agree.(许多澳大利亚人似乎都同意)”和第三段中“But not everyone agrees that the new law is a good idea.(但并非所有人都认为新法律是个好主意)”可推知,澳大利亚人对于新法律的观点不一。 根据倒数第二段中“One of the biggest problems is how the social media companies will figure out how old their users are.(最大的问题之一是社交媒体公司如何计算出用户的年龄)”可知,社交媒体公司执法中最大的问题是如何找出用户的年龄。故选A。 根据最后一段“Other countries have also taken steps to limit social media use by young people. In France, people under 15 can not use social media without agreement from a parent. Countries like the UK and Norway are considering similar laws. Some US states have passed laws limiting social media for young people, though these laws have been challenged in court.(其他国家也采取措施限制年轻人使用社交媒体。在法国,未经父母同意,15 岁以下的人不能使用社交媒体。英国和挪威等国家正在考虑类似的法律。美国一些州已经通过了限制年轻人使用社交媒体的法律,尽管这些法律在法庭上受到了质疑)”可知,最后一段主要讲了青少年对社交媒体的使用引起了全球的关注。故选D。 D Scientists on a National Geographic research trip to the Solomon Islands have discovered the world’s largest coral (珊瑚). The single coral colony (群), made up of around one billion tiny animals, is so large that it can be seen from space. Though underwater corals may look like rocks, they are actually made out of millions of tiny animals called coral polyps (珊瑚虫). Together, the polyps form a colony. A coral reef (礁) is normally built out of lots of colonies of different kinds. But in this case, scientists discovered a giant structure built entirely out of one species of coral. All of the coral polyps in this colony are the same kind. And the researchers believe this colony includes about one billion coral polyps. The coral colony is 34 meters wide and 32 meters long, and about 5.5 meters high. It is believed to be between 300 and 500 years old. The coral colony is mostly brown, but it also has yellow, blue, and red spots. The coral colony is home to many kinds of sea life, including shrimp, crabs, and different kinds of fish. The newly discovered coral colony sits in water that’s around 10 meters deep, and seems to be doing well — even when many other corals aren’t. In recent years, coral reefs around the world have been damaged by rising ocean temperatures caused by global warming. This is often called coral bleaching because huge areas of corals can turn white as they die. As of 2023, around 75% of the world’s coral reefs have been affected by coral bleaching. Since this giant coral colony is doing well, that may mean that it can survive in warmer temperatures. Clearly, it had to be strong to remain alive for hundreds of years. As one scientist said, “Anything old is really good at surviving.” That could be good news: It might mean that the colony will be able to produce new corals that can survive in warmer waters. 12. What is special about the newly discovered coral colony? A. It is found around the islands. B. It has many sea animals on it. C. It is made up of the same kind of coral. D. It includes colonies of various types of coral. 13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about the newly discovered coral colony? A. Its basic facts. B. Its poor situation. C. Its history of growth. D. Its living environment. 14. Which word can best describe the situation of the corals in the ocean now? A. Uncertain. B. Pleasing. C. Lively. D. Worrying. 15. Why is this new discovery important? A. It gives us hope for the survival of coral. B. It proves to be a totally new type of coral. C. It shows ancient animals are good at surviving. D. It helps us find ways to control ocean warming. C 13. A 14. D 15. 根据第二段中“But in this case, scientists discovered a giant structure built entirely out of one species of coral. All of the coral polyps in this colony are the same kind.(但在这种情况下,科学家们发现了一个完全由一种珊瑚建造的巨大结构。该群落中的所有珊瑚虫都是同一种类。)”可知,新发现的珊瑚群的特别之处在于,它是由同一种珊瑚组成的。故选C。 【13题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第三段“The coral colony is 34 meters wide and 32 meters long, and about 5.5 meters high. It is believed to be between 300 and 500 years old. The coral colony is mostly brown, but it also has yellow, blue, and red spots. The coral colony is home to many kinds of sea life, including shrimp, crabs, and different kinds of fish. The newly discovered coral colony sits in water that’s around 10 meters deep, and seems to be doing well — even when many other corals aren’t.(珊瑚群宽34米,长32米,高约5.5米。据信它有300到500年的历史。珊瑚群大多呈棕色,但也有黄色、蓝色和红色斑点。珊瑚群是多种海洋生物的家园,包括虾、蟹和不同种类的鱼。新发现的珊瑚群坐落在约 10 米深的水中,看起来状况良好,即使许多其他珊瑚状况不佳。)”可知,第三段主要介绍了新发现的珊瑚群的一些基本事实,故选A。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“In recent years, coral reefs around the world have been damaged by rising ocean temperatures caused by global warming. This is often called coral bleaching because huge areas of corals can turn white as they die. As of 2023, around 75% of the world’s coral reefs have been affected by coral bleaching.(近年来,全球变暖导致海洋温度上升,世界各地的珊瑚礁遭到破坏。这通常被称为珊瑚白化,因为大面积的珊瑚在死亡时会变白。截至2023年,全球约75%的珊瑚礁受到珊瑚白化的影响。)”可推知,现在海洋中珊瑚的状况令人担忧,故选D。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Since this giant coral colony is doing well, that may mean that it can survive in warmer temperatures. Clearly, it had to be strong to remain alive for hundreds of years. As one scientist said, “Anything old is really good at surviving.” That could be good news: It might mean that the colony will be able to produce new corals that can survive in warmer waters.(由于这个巨大的珊瑚群落状况良好,这可能意味着它可以在较温暖的温度下生存。显然,它必须坚固才能存活数百年。正如一位科学家所说:“任何古老的东西都非常善于生存。”这可能是个好消息:这可能意味着该珊瑚群将能够产生能够在温暖水域中生存的新珊瑚。)”可推知,这个新发现的珊瑚群很重要是因为它给了我们珊瑚生存的希望。故选A。 Kindness is more than just opening the door for a stranger or giving some coins to a beggar (乞丐). ____16____ Kindness means being helpful, generous, and doing good things for others without expecting anything in return. What does it mean to be kind? It can be hard to describe, but kind people are thoughtful, caring, and considerate. ____17____ Kind people think others are important. They choose to be empathetic (understanding others’ feelings), to be connected to others, and to be generous. Kindness is good for you too. When you are kind to others you make them feel better and brighten their day. ____18____ Being kind can lower your blood pressure and reduce worry. For example, being kind to rude people in line at the coffee shop or to drivers who cut you off on the road can make you feel better. ____19____ A study in 2019 found that doing kind things for seven days increased happiness. Even just aiming to do one kind act a week can make you happier. But don’t stop there; try to be kind every day. Doing kind things can also make you feel more connected to others and less lonely. And kindness can spread. When you do something kind, it encourages others to be kind too. How can you become kinder? It’s easier than you might think. It starts with making a choice. You can choose to focus on positive things and improve your life. One important way to become kinder is to be thankful for the good things in your life. ____20____ A. What is kindness? B. Kindness can also make you happier. C. Don’t be kind to some kinds of people. D. Kindness is acting in a friendly or caring way. E. Treating others well can make you feel unpleasant. F. This helps you remember the positive things in the world. G. However, do you know kindness is also good for your body and mind? A 17. D 18. G 19. B 20. 【16题详解】 根据空后“Kindness means being helpful, generous, and doing good things for others without expecting anything in return.(善良意味着乐于助人、慷慨大方,并且在为他人做好事时不期望得到任何回报。)” 选项A“What is kindness?(什么是善良呢?)” 故选A。 【17题详解】 根据上文“It can be hard to describe, but kind people are thoughtful, caring, and considerate.(这可能很难描述,但善良的人往往体贴、有爱心且善解人意。)” D“Kindness is acting in a friendly or caring way.(善良是以友好或关怀的方式行事)”延续上文内容进一步对善良的含义进行解释。故选D。 【18题详解】 根据上文内容“Kindness is good for you too. When you are kind to others, you make them feel better and brighten their day.(善良对你自己也有好处。当你善待他人时,你会让他们感觉更好,点亮他们的一天。)”可知,上文提到善良对他人有好处。而空后“Being kind can lower your blood pressure and reduce worry.(善良可以降低你的血压,减少忧虑。)” G“However, do you know kindness is also good for your body and mind?(然而,你知道善良对你的身心也有好处吗?)” 根据本段“A study in 2019 found that doing kind things for seven days increased happiness. Even just aiming to do one kind act a week can make you happier. But don’t stop there; try to be kind every day. Doing kind things can also make you feel more connected to others and less lonely. This act of honesty led to a series of positive events, making kindness more popular in the community. One day after school, Jim was walking through the parking lot near the store in his community when he saw a thick envelope lying on the ground. Curiously, he picked it up and noticed it was filled with money. Realizing someone must have lost it, he decided to take it to the store’s customer service counter. The store manager, Zoe, was a kind-hearted lady. Her store was also a charity store which sold clothes and other goods given by customers to raise funds(资金)to help those in need. Surprised but impressed by Jim’s honesty, Zoe asked for Jim’s contact information and promised to tell him if the owner came forward. “Thank you, Jim. You are an honest and responsible boy,” she said. An hour later, Zoe called Jim. “The owner of the envelope has been found. She is very grateful and wants to see you,” she informed Jim. Jim was relieved and happy to hear the good news. He went back to the store to meet the owner. The owner, Mrs Patel, was overjoyed to get her money back. “This money is meant to help my family during a difficult time,” she explained. “You are a true hero, Jim. I can’t thank you enough.” She offered Jim a reward. However, Jim refused and said, “I just did what I thought was right.” Mrs Patel was touched by his selflessness and insisted on giving him something in return. At that time, Zoe had an idea. “Why not give Jima gift card?” Zoe suggested. Finally, Mrs Patel and Jim compromised (折中). Mrs Patel gave Jim a small gift card. Jim thanked Mrs Patel and left, feeling proud of his decision. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 The next day, Zoe called Jim again and said, “Inspired by your kind act, customers advised me to start a fund to reward good deeds.” ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As time went on, the fund quickly grew. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】The next day, Zoe called Jim again and said, “Inspired by your kind act, customers advised me to start a fund to reward good deeds.” Zoe continued to say, “Jim, thank you so much. Then the store set up the fund for gift cards, and many customers contributed. Zoe also created a list of awards for various good deeds, and the community eagerly participated. As time went on, the fund quickly grew. And the store became a center for positive activities, attracting even more customers. More people were recognized and rewarded for their kindness, and the community became even more united in their efforts to help others. B Despite graduating from high school in 1950, now 90-year-old Minnie Payne wasn’t ready to hang up her academic (学业的) career. Last weekend, Payne walked across the stage at the University of North Texas graduation ceremony, in order to receive her master’s degree, becoming the oldest graduate to complete her coursework and earn her degree at the university at any level. “I have always tried to better myself,” Payne said. “When you gain an education, you better yourself and you better those around you. And, of course, you gain knowledge. And I know a lot more now than I did to begin with.” Payne appreciated her professors and academic adviser, Billy Roessler, for their support. “Minnie was very into her work,” said Roessler. “She was focused on getting the education and the knowledge and skills that she desired.” Payne said education was not an important part of her childhood, having been born into a family struggling economically. She said, “My parents did not realize the value of an education, so I had no one to help me or encourage me.” After graduating from high school in 1950, Payne held many different jobs across several industries, working as a court reporter, a transcriptionist (转录员) and a teacher. After retiring from a more than 30-year career as a transcriptionist, Payne said she wanted to do something meaningful with her life. She ultimately received her undergraduate (本科生) degree from Texas Woman’s University at age 73. Given her career background in writing, she decided she wanted to continue in that field.· When I earned my undergraduate, I immediately started work as a writer, and for about 16 years between my undergraduate and master’s program, I wrote and edited. I was not sitting around,” she said. Payne was also determined to continue her education journey after that, and she focused on writing to go for her master’s degree. 4. To improve herself and help other people. 5. What stopped Payne from continuing her education after high school? A. Showing no interest in study. B. Suffering from health problems. C. The Journey of a Lifelong Learner B. The Importance of Higher Education C. An Old Lady’s Journey to Being a Writer D The Oldest Graduate’s Struggle in Study C Australia has passed a law that aims to prevent people younger than 16 from using social media. D Scientists on a National Geographic research trip to the Solomon Islands have discovered the world’s largest coral (珊瑚). The coral colony is 34 meters wide and 32 meters long and about 5.5 meters high. 12. Curiously, he picked it up and noticed it was filled with money. Realizing someone must have lost it, he decided to take it to the store’s customer service counter.
