Jack, a 14-year-old from Salt Lake City, was born with Down syndrome (唐氏综合征), which brought him physical and cognitive challenges. However, with the proper support and resources, many people with Down syndrome are able to live fulfilling lives, participate in their communities, and achieve personal goals.
Since Jack is a little smaller and slower than many of his peers, his parents, Devon and Kimberly, often worry that other kids might leave him out, fearing he could get hurt. But they do hope there are certain activities to keep Jack engaged. Devon suggested playing kickball, a sport he enjoyed growing up with his friends. The couple invited kids from the neighborhood, dividing them into two teams. And Jack’s only job was to kick the ball. This way, while the other kids were running, they didn’t have to worry about accidentally knocking Jack over, but he could still be involved in every play and every kick.
Thus the kickball team, named the Inclusion FC, was established by the couple and a group of kids in the community to involve more kids like Jack and make them all feel included. They played and trained like professional players, often amusing that the Inclusion FC helped develop their talents and achieve their athletic dreams.
After one game, Kimberly posted a video about the experience online, where it has gone viral with more than 1.5 million views and almost 3,000 comments. “Best Dad Ever! Inclusion Matters!” she titled the video. “The cool thing for us is that Jack now has relationships with all the kids in the neighborhood,” Devon continues. “With the Inclusion FC taking off, I thought, this is so amazing because it has got to be that glimpse of hope for those with Down syndrome, and every kid is a special gift.”
As for Jack’s future, the parents hope that he continues to grow up in a world where he’s accepted and included. “There’s so many possibilities out there,” Kimberly says.

C. To achieve kids’ professional dreams. D. To treat children’s disabilities in sports.
7. What does the couple stress when talking about their efforts?
A. The importance of competition in sports. B. The need for constant practice to succeed.

Unlike kids in the United States, hunter-gatherer children in the Congo Basin have often learned how to hunt, identify plants that are safe to eat and care for babies by the age of six or seven. This rapid learning is enabled by a unique social environment where cultural knowledge is acquired not just from parents but from the broader community, according to a new Washington State University-led study.
“We focus on hunter-gatherers because this way of life characterized 99% of human history,” said Barry Hewlett, a professor of anthropology (人类学) and lead author of the study. “Our bodies and minds are adapted to this small group living, rather than to contemporary urban life. By examining how children in these societies learn, we aim to uncover the mechanisms (机制) that have allowed humans to adapt to diverse environments across the globe.”
For the study, Hewlett and colleagues used observational data to examine nine different ways of cultural transmission, meaning from whom and how children learn, in hunter-gatherer societies. Their analysis reveals that members related to a child’s extended family have likely played a greater role in passing down knowledge to children than previously thought. Additionally, the study shows about half of the cultural knowledge hunter-gatherer children and adolescents acquire comes from people they are not related to. This contrasts with previous studies on the topic that have more heavily emphasized the transmission of knowledge from parent to child.
The broad informal learning network in hunter-gatherer societies is made possible by close living conditions. Small camps, usually consisting of 25-35 individuals living in homes a few feet from each other, create an environment where children can observe and interact with a wide range of people. This allows them to learn essential skills, including caring for babies and cooking as well as hunting and gathering, through a process that is often unobvious.
8. What’s special about hunter-gatherer children in paragraph 1?
A They primarily learn from their parents. B. They follow structured learning programs.
C. They receive formal education from schools. D. They start learning survival skills at a young age.
9. Why did Barry Hewlett conduct the study?
A. To disclose learning mechanisms of human. B. To select better global educational practices.
C. To assess small-group living’s role in evolution. D. To study urban life’s effect on human adaptation.
10. What does the underlined word “transmission” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Contrast. B. Spread. C. Highlight. D. Display.
11. What’s the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Isolation of individuals in the Congo Basin. B. Complexity of communication in small camps.
C. Importance of living close for informal learning. D. Limited skills taught in hunter-gatherer societies.
D
A Chinese research team has published a groundbreaking study in Nature, creating the world’s most comprehensive map of blood vessel (血管) networks for various cancers. This significant advancement holds great promise for earlier cancer detection, improved drug development and personalized treatment strategies.
Led by Yin Mingzhu, the vice-president of Chongqing University Three Gorges Hospital, this team is a collaborative effort that includes scientists from well-known institutions such as Tsinghua University and Peking Union Medical College Hospital. Their study sheds light on the complex process of angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels. This discovery paves the way for more effective anti-angiogenic treatments in clinical practice.
Angiogenesis plays a crucial role in tumor (肿瘤) growth and survival. By disrupting this process, anti-angiogenic treatments aim to starve tumors, potentially stopping their growth or even making them smaller. Blood vessels act as a vital delivery system, supplying essential nutrients that enable tumor cells to multiply and spread. When angiogenesis is prevented, the tumor’s access to oxygen and nutrients is restricted, which can lead to cell death and a reduction in tumor size.
“By identifying the unique characteristics of the tumor microenvironment and locating the key cells that supply energy to these tumors, we can establish a strong foundation for personalized treatment based on interrupting the nutrient supply,” Yin explained. The team analyzed single-cell RNA data from 31 human cancer types, uncovering distinct and common functions within the cells. Their findings highlight potential markers of disease progression, which could serve as powerful indicators for sustained benefits in future clinical settings.
Building on these findings, the research team is actively promoting collaboration between academia, industry, and clinical settings. This collaborative effort aims to develop tools for early cancer detection and guide treatment selection for individual patients. Yin added, “One potential application is a diagnostic (诊断) test kit that identifies early signs of cancer or predicts a patient’s suitability for specific treatments.” This research is in line with Chongqing University’s vision of becoming a top medical school by integrating its engineering strengths with medical research.
12. Which can we infer about mapping blood vessel networks?
A. It simplifies the study of angiogenesis in cancer.
B. It betters cancer detection and treatment strategies.
C. It plays a significant role in tumor growth in vessel.
D. It requires competition among scientific institutions.
13. What is the underlying logic of anti-angiogenic treatments?
A. To reduce nutrient supply in tumors.
B. To enhance the delivery ability of blood.
C. To block the formation of essential nutrients.
D. To speed up the body’s response to tumor cells.
14. In which aspect will Yin apply their outcomes according to the last paragraph?
A. Gene Editing B. Early cancer identification.
C. Single-cell analysis. D. Funding for Medical Research.
15. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Mapping Cancer to Pioneer a New Frontier
B. The Impact of Nutrition on Tumor Growth
C. Advances in Early Cancer Formation Strategies
D. Understanding Vessel Networks for Cancers

During a long-awaited trip, my friend Sophia and I planned to visit Rome for a holiday. However, it felt like fate was playing tricks on us as trouble followed us every step of the way. Luckily, we stuck together and figured things out as we went along.
It all started the day before our departure when Sophia received some disappointing news: her flight was canceled due to bad weather. She anxiously searched for other flights but found that most were fully booked. As someone who usually stays calm, I encouraged her not to give up and to find a solution. After several hours of phone calls and online searches, she managed to book a new flight that had a transfer in Milan. Though it would take longer, she decided to take the chance and fly to Milan before heading to Rome.
Meanwhile, my flight from Barcelona was also facing issues. Initially, I was excited about the trip, but my flight was delayed due to bad weather as well. After a long wait filled with anxiety, I kept checking the flight information, hoping to make it to Rome in time to meet Sophia. Finally, after what felt like ages, I boarded a flight to Rome at 10:30 pm, feeling excited that I would soon be reunited with my friend.
However, my excitement quickly turned to disappointment when I arrived in Rome and found that my luggage had not made it. I felt a wave of frustration wash over me as I stood by the baggage claim, watching everyone else collect their bags. The realization that my suitcase was likely stuck in Barcelona hit hard, and I could only imagine the clothes and items I had carefully packed. I approached the airline’s desk, heart racing, desperate for answers about my missing luggage.

A. They primarily learn from their parents.

D It requires competition among scientific institutions.
13. What is the underlying logic of anti-angiogenic treatments?
A. To reduce nutrient supply in tumors.
B. To enhance the delivery ability of blood.
C. To block the formation of essential nutrients.
D. To speed up the body’s response to tumor cells.
14. In which aspect will Yin apply their outcomes according to the last paragraph?
A. Gene Editing B. Early cancer identification.
C. Single-cell analysis. D. Funding for Medical Research.
15. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Mapping Cancer to Pioneer a New Frontier
B. The Impact of Nutrition on Tumor Growth
C. Advances in Early Cancer Formation Strategies
D. Understanding Vessel Networks for Cancers
【答案】12 B 13. A 14. B 15. D

故填the。
根据“making”和“hard for residents to take livestock to the market”可知,此处用“make it+形容词+for sb. to do”表示“使得做某事对某人来说怎么样”。故填it。
空处作句子的谓语,结合“since a 5-kilometer wall was built in 2010”可知,时态应用现在完成时,表示过去的动作或状态持续到现在,且主语that situation是单数,助动词应用has。故填has become。
故填What。
固定短语be relieved to do表示“因做某事而感到欣慰”。故填to get。
结合“an example of”可知,此处用短语stand as表示“作为……的存在”。故填as。
a series of后应用可数名词approach的复数形式。故填approaches。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

The next day, Sophia and I went to the airport to pick up my luggage.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
At that very moment, Sophia made her appearance. Her cheerful smile immediately lifted my spirits as she rushed over, concern on her face. “I was starting to worry!” she exclaimed, wrapping her arms around me in a warm hug. I quickly filled her in on my baggage trouble, and she listened intently. “Don’t let this ruin our trip,” she said with a determined smile. When we confirmed that my luggage would be sent on the next flight, Sophia and I sighed with relief and decided to grab coffee and plan our time in Rome.
The next day, Sophia and I went to the airport to pick up my luggage. We arrived early, excitement buzzing between us as we anticipated the reunion with my suitcase. After checking in at the airline desk, we waited anxiously at the baggage claim. When my bag finally appeared, a wave of relief washed over me. We cheered as I recovered it, and I couldn’t help but feel grateful for Sophia’s support. With my belongings back in hand, we set off to explore the city, ready for new adventures.
