B “I can’t connect with your characters.” I kept hearing the same feedback and was unable to understand why and not sure what to do. I was a character-driven writer. How could I mess up the one thing I was supposed to be good at? I was determined to tell my agent that these characters were real. After all, I knew they were real. My main character Lotus had lived inside me for years. I just needed to describe her on the page. I wrote and edited for a year, trying to respond to this agent’s feedback. But Lotus’ personality began to disappear. I tried to have her make “better” decisions, wear smarter fashion, and have more friends, as my agent said she acted “childish” and was “lonely”. And when this agent finally parted ways with me, I felt like I had failed. Now with time and distance, I realize I tried to fit Lotus into a normal style to please my agent. And as a result, Lotus lost her personality. When that agent discouraged me from writing Lotus as autistic (自闭的), he said that would make Lotus seem more “vulnerable”. I didn’t want Lotus to seem vulnerable. Lotus’ autism is what makes her powerful, I tried to explain. But from a normal perspective, Lotus’ autism could only be seen as a weakness. Unsure of how to tell my agent of the strength and power autistic women hold, I began to write Lotus as “normal”. And I failed. After all, what do I know about being normal? My whole life, autism was my nature. Not being diagnosed until 2020, I thought the way I saw the world was “normal”. My current agent encourages me to write from my neurodivergent (神经多样性的) experience. With this invitation, I revisited Lotus and saw her the way I first wrote her. And when I did, the characters and the story began to make more sense. Knowing my characters as neurodivergent not only gives me joy as a writer, but it has produced my strongest writing. For so long, I’ve fought against the advice to “write what I know”, partly because I didn’t know what I actually knew. I didn’t know I was neurodivergent. But as I explored my life experience, my writing is stronger. There is a power to our life experience. It’s not a limitation on our craft, but a swinging open of the gates. 24. How did the author feel when receiving the repeated response from the first agent? A. Indifferent. B. Dismissive. C. Confused. D. Desperate. 25. Why did Lotus’s personality lose? A. Because Lotus no longer lived inside the author. B. Because the author attempted to make the first agent satisfied. C. Because the first agent failed to sympathize with Lotus. D. Because Lotus was considered childish and lonely. 26. What do we know about the author? A. She regretted parting with the first agent. B. She owed her success in life to autism. C. She knew about her autism in early years. D. She was inspired by her autistic experience. 27. What does the author want to express in the last paragraph? A. Hold your dream regardless of discouragement. B. Be honest to yourself and write from your heart. C. Following authority is the barrier to success. D. Living with a disease inspires masterpieces. C Enlightening, challenging, stimulating, fun. These were some of the words that Nature readers used to describe their experiences of art-science collaborations in a series of articles on partnerships between artists and researchers. Nearly 40% of the roughly 350 people who responded to an accompanying poll, said they had collaborated with artists; and almost all said they would consider doing so in future. Such an encouraging result is not surprising. Scientists are increasingly seeking out visual artists to help them communicate their work to new audiences. “Artists help scientists reach a broader audience and make emotional connections that enhance learning,” one respondent said. One example of how artists and scientists have together rocked the scenes came last month when the Sydney Symphony Orchestra performed a reworked version of Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. They reimagined the 300-year-old score by injecting the latest climate prediction data for each season-provided by Monash University’s Climate Change Communication Research Hub. The performance was a creative call to action ahead of November’s United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, UK. But a genuine partnership must be a two-way street. Fewer artists than scientists responded to the Nature poll; however, several respondents noted that artists do not simply assist scientists with their communication requirements. Nor should their work be considered only as an object of study. The alliances are most valuable when scientists and artists have a shared interest in a project, are able to jointly design it and can critique each other’s work. Such an approach can both prompt new research as well as result in powerful art. More than half a century ago, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology opened its Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS) to explore the role of technology in culture. The founders deliberately focused their projects around light — hence the “visual studies” in the name. Light was something that both artists and scientists had an interest in, and therefore could form the basis of collaboration. As science and technology progressed, and divided into more sub-disciplines, the centre was simultaneously (同时地) looking to a time when leading researchers could also be artists, writers and poets, and vice versa. Nature’s poll findings suggest that this trend is as strong as ever, but, to make a collaboration work, both sides need to invest time, and embrace surprise and challenge. The reach of art-science tie-ups needs to go beyond the necessary purpose of research communication, and participant must not fall into the trap of stereotyping (对……产生成见) each other. Artists and scientists alike are immersed in discovery and invention, and challenge and critique are core to both, too. 28. According to Paragraph 1, art-science collaborations have ________. A. caught the attention of critics B. received favorable responses C. promoted academic publishing D. sparked heated public controversy 29. The reworked version of The Four Seasons is mentioned to show that ________. A. art can offer audiences easy access to science B. science can help with the expression of emotions C. public participation in science has a promising future D. art is effective in facilitating scientific innovations 30. What does the underlined world “alliances” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. associations B. attachments C. arguments D. anticipations 31. According to the author, art-science collaborations ________. A. are likely to go beyond public expectations B. will intensify interdisciplinary competition C. should do more than communicating science D. are becoming more popular than before D “There are few things more delightful than seeing a child’s eyes light up as they pick up a present and wonder what might be inside,” says Chaz Firestone, an assistant professor of psychological science, “What our work shows is that your mind is able to track the information they are seeking. Just as they, might be able to tell what’s inside the box by shaking it around, you can tell what they are trying to figure out when they shake it.” A team of researchers recently conducted a fascinating study to look into the science behind this present-guessing phenomenon. They asked 500 volunteers to watch two videos, each showing someone shaking a box of objects with different intentions. In one video, the person was attempting to determine the number of items inside the box, while in the other, they aimed to identify the shapes of the objects. Surprisingly, within a few seconds, the study participants were able to accurately determine the intention behind each shake. According to the researchers, this ability to quickly distinguish the purpose behind a shake involves numerous mental calculations and observations of subtle (细微的) cues to understand what someone is trying to learn from their surroundings. Yet, we seem to do it easily. “The way you would shake a present to find out if it’s one thing or many things, or if it’s a small thing or a big thing, can be subtly different,” says Sholei Croom, a graduate student. “But people are amazing at picking up on such differences.” While the study focused primarily on gift-shaking, it opens the door to a deeper understanding of human perception and cognitive abilities. In the future the team would like to pursue whether people observe the difference between what you want to do and what you want to learn. They’re also interested in when these skills emerge in human development and if it’s possible to build computational models to detail exactly how observed physical actions show cognitive intent. 32. What does the new study focus on about the box-shaking? A. The motivation to recognize the goals. B. The interaction between vision and thought. C. The way to track the information with mind. D. The psychological insights into emotions. 33. What did the participants do in the experiment? A. Report their opinions on videos. B. Identıfy various shaking ways. C. Infer the meaning of the shaking. D. Guess the contents in the box. 34. The ability that people can reveal the purpose of subtle movements is based on ______. A. the comprehension of small clues B. the quicker reaction to movements C. the surroundings people are in D. the prediction of the next move 35. What is the possible head of the last paragraph? A. Applications Are Promising B. Tell Hand from Head C. Where the Research Will Go D. Limitation Still Exists Giraffe’s Social Connections It’s quantity (数量) over quality when it comes to relationships for male giraffes. A recent study finds that while female giraffes have closer “friends” than male giraffes, males have more “acquaintances”. Giraffes form a complex society, creating different levels of social communities within larger groups. ____36____. “The degree to which an animal is connected to others in its social network influences reproductive (生殖的) success and population ecology, the spread of information, and even how diseases move through a population,” said Derek Lee, a research professor at Penn State University and an author of the paper. “____37____.” For their research, the team analyzed movements and connections of 1,081 free-ranging wild giraffes in Tanzania. They found differences between the ways males and females of all ages formed connections. “____38____. Young male giraffes have the most associates (同伴) and move often between groups as they explore their social environment before dispersing (分散),” said Monica Bond, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Zurich and an author of the paper. “____39____ and being more socially connected helps them to survive better.” The findings suggest that adult females generally have fewer, but stronger relationships with one another than males and younger females. In an earlier study, the researchers found that relationships among female giraffes helped them live longer. “____40____. Studying these relationships helps researchers learn about giraffes and understand how genes, information and diseases spread through populations, which is critical for giraffes’ health and conservation efforts,” scientists said. A. Information about sociality, therefore, can provide important guidance for conservation B. We thought all the animals have certain connections with each other C. In fact, old giraffes were not active in communicating with their mates D. Older males wander widely in many groups searching for females to mate with E. This new research shows that giraffe societies are more complex than previously believed F. Adult females have the strongest and most enduring relationships with each other G. My sister was at camp for three whole weeks and I was on the best baseball team in town. It was all good until Jeremy Ross moved into the neighborhood. I did not like Jeremy Ross. He laughed at me when he struck me out in a baseball game. He had a party on his trampoline (蹦床) but I wasn’t even invited. Jeremy Ross was the only person on my enemy list. I never even had an enemy list until he moved into the neighborhood. I hung the list up in my tree house, where Jeremy Ross was not allowed to go. My dad told me that when he was my age he had enemies too. But he knew a good way to get rid of them. I asked him to tell me how. “I’ll show you how!” he said. He pulled a really old recipe book off the kitchen shelf. Inside, there was a worn-out scrap of paper with faded writing. “Enemy Pie,” he said, satisfied. I was wondering what exactly is in Enemy Pie. But Dad said the recipe was so secret. I begged him to tell me something or anything. “I’ll tell you this,” he said. “Enemy Pie is the fastest known way to get rid of enemies.” This got my mind working. What kinds of things — disgusting things — would I put into a pie for an enemy? When Dad was preparing for the pic, I brought Dad some weeds, earthworms and rocks, but he didn’t think he needed those. I went out to play alone. I shot baskets until the ball got stuck on the roof. And all the while, I listened to the sounds of my dad chopping and stirring and blending the ingredients of Enemy Pie. I thought the Enemy Pie must be the most awful thing in the world. To my surprise, I smelled something really good. I asked Dad what was wrong. Enemy Pie shouldn’t smell this good. But Dad told me: “In order for it to work, you need to spend a day with your enemy. Even worse, you have to be nice to him.” _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ We played games delightedly until my Dad called us for dinner. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 北仑中学2024学年第二学期高三年级期初考试 英语试卷 选择题部分 第一部分:听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1. 5分,满分7. 5分) 听下面5段对话。 What will the woman do? After checking out the exhibition “What if?” by the successful visual artist Sandeep Johal, we have Ms. Johal with us. Hi, Ms. Johal. Could you tell us what inspired you to hold this exhibition today? W: When I look at the current place that I live in, most of the artworks are about figures of men or landscapes. And when I think back to that teenage bedroom of mine, I have no memory of artworks about women either. So I wanted to create an opportunity for people to see how brave and tough women are. M: What was that process like to create such wonderful artwork? W: I lived in a town called Kelowna, in South Asia. It is quite a small community. In 2016, I started to take up drawing, but just line drawing portraits of women that I had researched in my community. In order to organize this exhibition, I made my first attempt at drawing large-scale portraits of women. That was a challenge for me. 18. 24. C 25. B 26. D 27. A. art can offer audiences easy access to science B. science can help with the expression of emotions C public participation in science has a promising future D. art is effective in facilitating scientific innovations 30. What does the underlined world “alliances” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. associations B. attachments C. arguments D. anticipations 31. According to the author, art-science collaborations ________. Limitation Still Exists 【答案】32. A 33. C 34. A 35. 根据文章第一段“ What our work shows is that your mind is able to track the information they are seeking. Different animals form different bonds within that society 【答案】36. G 37. A 38. D 39. F 40. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: But Dad told me: “In order for it to work, you need to spend a day with your enemy. Even worse, you have to be nice to him.” It sounded incredible and awkward but thinking that I could get rid of this enemy forever, I resolved to meet him. After greeting and chatting, we were able to have fun together. He told me how to play on his trampoline and when we climbed up on the roof to get the stuck ball, Jeremy noticed my tree house. He asked whether he could go into the house. Considering I should be nice to him, I said okay to him. But I climbed up ahead of him and tore the enemy list off the wall. Time passed fleetly in our laughter. We played games delightedly until my Dad called us for dinner. As was predicted, Dad brought out the pie. But at this point, I didn’t think Jeremy was my enemy anymore. He was eager to eat the delicious pie. I panicked and shouted: “Jimmy, don’t eat it! I think it’s poisonous or something!” He looked at me curiously. “If it’s so bad,” Jeremy asked, “then why has your Dad already eaten half of it?” I turned to my Dad and he was eating Enemy Pie! Although I was still confused about the pie, what seemed obvious was that from that day on, I had lost my enemy forever and had a new close friend! 词汇激活 行为类 ①决定:resolve/determine ②注意:notice/take notice of ③大叫:shout/cry out 情绪类 ①尴尬的:awkward/embarrassed ②感到恐慌:panic/feel frightened 【点睛】[高分句型1]. He asked whether he could go into the house.
