In a digital age where screens control children’s attention, Pakistani singer and activist Shehzad Roy is trying to help parents weaken this growing trend.
Roy has made a chess course developed through the Zindagi Trust, his non-profit organisation, publicly available for free. The course seeks to inspire children to spend less time glued to their devices.
On Sunday, Roy shared a heartfelt message for parents struggling to manage their children’s screen time. Highlighting the transformative power of chess, he said, “If you want to lower your kids’ screen time, teach them chess.”
Recalling how Zindagi Trust introduced chess as a subject in its schools years ago, Roy reflected, “Because this is a competitive mind sport, we observed kids sitting alone for hours, thinking and designing. They were spending time with themselves.”
He elaborated on the success of Zindagi Trust’s chess project, mentioning how girls from the programme have gone on to win Pakistan’s top chess championships. Roy urged everyone to teach children chess using the course available on the Zindagi Trust website, explaining that it could lead to noticeable changes in their routines and improve their mathematical and cognitive skills.
The journey of incorporating chess in Zindagi Trust schools began in 2011 as part of the organisation’s broader goal to strengthen education in economically disadvantaged communities.

Black-capped chickadees (山雀) have extraordinary memories that can recall the locations of thousands pieces of food to help them survive the winter. Now scientists at Columbia’s Zuckerman Institute have discovered how the chickadees can remember so many details: they memorize each food location using brain cell activity similar to a barcode (条形码).
“Scientists have been impressed at the memory of these birds for years, but what has been a mystery is what was going on in their brains to support these memories,” said Dr. Aronov. “Now we have neural (神经的) recording and behavior tracking tools at our disposal to advance our knowledge.”
In typical experiments, a black-capped chickadee quickly hides sunflower seeds in holes as the researchers monitor activity in the hippocampus (海马体) — a brain structure critical for memory. The scientists unexpectedly found that each time a chickadee stored a seed, hippocampus fired in a unique pattern.
The team compares these patterns to barcodes because each one was unique and seemed to store information related to a specific memory. “If you think of a barcode at a supermarket, you can store a lot of information with it about the food item, like its price, name and where it is in the store,” Chettih says. He thinks the neural barcodes in chickadees works in a similar manner, storing information such as when and where a bird hid a specific seed.
“It would be hard to see the barcode if you didn’t know exactly when and where to look for it,” Chettih says. “It’s possible that it exists in other animals, but it hasn’t been spotted yet.”
8. What ability of black-capped chickadees impresses scientists?
A. The ability to collect food. B. The ability to memorize food locations.
C. The ability to find barcodes. D. The ability to survive cold winter.
9. What did the scientists discover about the hippocampus in the chickadees?
A. It got active in a special pattern when they store food.
B. It stored information about their food preferences.
C. It was a brain structure critical for migration activity.
D. It took control of their feeding patterns.
10. What can we infer from Chettih’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Chettih is unsure whether animals have barcodes at all.
B. Scientists can keep track of the barcode easily.
C. The barcode in chickadees is exactly the same as that in supermarkets.
D. Finding the barcode needs specific knowledge and observation.
11. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Sunflower Seeds & Chickadees B. Chickadee Memory: Neural Barcodes
C. Advances in Neural Recording Technology D. Memory Secrets of Birds
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. B

Have you ever joyously stepped out to your backyard garden, only to find your carefully cared-for plants and herbs dying? Was the soil too dry? Did pests find their way in? During times like these, some frustrated gardeners may wish their plants would just tell them what they need. A new Microsoft-partnered project in the UK is trying to see if that concept can be realized in the real-world.
Next year, the Royal Horticultural Society in England will show off an “intelligent garden” that uses an AI model to monitor the garden’s environment and inform gardeners when it needs care. Visitors can ask the AI-powered garden questions. The model could then respond with phrases like “I need a bit more water,” or “I could use a haircut” depending on data captured in the soil. Apart from the pleasant chat with plants, the garden will provide visitors with a physical representation of the many ways AI could be used to improve sustainability (可持续性) and conservation efforts moving forward.
When the garden is completed, it will rely on a network of sensors throughout the garden measuring environmental factors like soil moisture and nutrient levels as well as wind and projected rainfall. All of that data is then sent to a specially designed AI model housed in a room at the back of the garden. The model, powered by Microsoft’s Azure Open AI Service, can then analyze those factors and inform gardeners on feeding, watering and trimming (修剪).
Tom Massey, one of the garden’s two designers, described the project as a “unique opportunity”. “I am excited to see how AI can assist gardeners to help make a meaningful impact that will help us all garden and grow more sustainably,” Massey said in a recent interview.
12. Why does the author mention frustrated gardeners in the first paragraph?
A. To emphasize the importance of plant care.
B. To introduce AI’s potential application in gardening.
C. To complain about the difficulties of gardening.
D. To describe the common problems in gardening.
13. What can visitors do in the “intelligent garden”?
A. They can teach the AI model to recognize different plants.
B. They can use the AI model to design their own gardens.
C. They can adjust the environment of the garden perfectly.
D. They can communicate with the AI-powered garden.
14. What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?
A. The data collected by AI in the garden.
B. The location of the AI model in the garden.
C. The process of how the garden works.
D. The functions of the sensors in the garden.
15. What’s Tom Massey’s attitude towards the project?
A. Positive, B. Neutral. C. Negative. D. Indifferent.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. A

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Eleven-year-old Mike was new to Finch School. Because of a stutter (口吃), he was often laughed at by his former classmates. Therefore, he was very shy, and didn’t talk much. This made Mike feel extremely lonely. He often sat alone in the corner during breaks, watching his classmates play and laugh together. He longed to join them but was too afraid to take the first step. His stutter felt like a barrier, separating him from the rest of the world.
In fact, he wanted to communicate with his new classmates, but was afraid of being made fun of by them, just like before. So he chose to stay alone and hardly talk to anyone. Noticing his behaviour, Mrs White, his English teacher, approached him, and asked about his problem. Realizing how Mike had difficulty expressing himself in class and fitting in, she decided to help him.
In order to encourage Mike to be brave, she told him everyone was different, and praised his creativity and efforts. She would always smile at him and declare, “You did a good job! ” She also showed Mike’s report to the class, praising how careful his writing was.
One day Mrs White asked every student to participate in a speech contest in class. Nervous and anxious, Mike felt his heart beating fast. It was impossible for him to stand in front of the class to finish a speech. What if he stuttered? What if they laughed at him? Discouraged by these thoughts, he went to Mrs White’s office after class, asking if he could skip the contest. Smiling gently, Mrs White encouraged him to believe in his abilities and offered to help him prepare for it.

Finally, the moment came and it was Mike’s turn.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】With Mrs White’s encouragement, Mike started to have some small changes. In the classroom, he began to interact with his classmates more frequently. During breaks, instead of sitting alone in the corner, he joined their games and laughter, sharing jokes and stories. After school, he practiced speaking in front of the mirror, repeating words until they flowed more smoothly, and even recorded himself to track progress. Gradually, his stutter lessened as he grew more engaged. Mrs. White, noticing his progress, helped him prepare for the upcoming speech contest by practicing his speech together and offering constructive feedback.
Finally, the moment came and it was Mike’s turn. As he walked to the front, his heart pounded. Suddenly, Mrs. White’s encouraging words echoed in his ears, making him gather his courage and begin his speech calmly. Clearly and steadily, he delivered his message despite a few stutters. As his speech ended, Mrs White and his classmates gave him thumbs-up and said “You did a good gob! ” With watery eyes, Mike smiled, feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment wash over him. He realized that everyone could overcome himself with hard work and support.

B. By developing their planning and thinking abilities.
C. By encouraging them to take part in physical activities.
D. By teaching them advanced math questions.
6. What does the underlined phrase “elaborated on” probably mean in paragraph 5?
A. Affected. B. Ignored. C. Explained. D. Assumed.
7. What has been the wider aim of Zindagi Trust since 2011?

D

One day, Mrs White asked every student to participate in a speech contest in class.
