On my 35th birthday, I gave myself my first skateboard. Most of my friends and family thought I was crazy, but only I knew why.
Two years ago, I accidentally fell down a 12-meter waterfall and broke my pelvis (盆骨). I went from using a wheelchair to using walking sticks, then to trying to walk a block, and finally walking miles. Physical activity became even more important in my life. So why not make it enjoyable? I've wanted to learn to skateboard since I was a kid, but most of my time and energy went into dancing. In my opinion, skating was actually very similar to dancing. For a long time, I tried to learn skating on my own. I had no idea what I was doing and always felt mortified when many strangers saw me skating or simply trying to keep my balance. That fear of being judged often stopped me from just getting out there for practice.
One day, my friend Monica and I met some of the members of GRLSWIRL, a skateboarding club. They were so friendly that we wanted to be part of it. This club was amazing. Even though everyone there was better than me, they were happy to help and excited to see me overcome challenges. There, I gradually became more confident.
For me, a big part of skating was overcoming my PTSD (创伤后应激障碍). Falling is a huge part of skating, but because of that accident, it was really hard for me to overcome it. However, the more I learned from every little fall — allowing my body to understand that it was OK, and that I could drop and get up again — the less my PTSD took over. The more I skated, the better my body and mind felt. Although I started skating for therapy (治疗), I never imagined it would open up a new world of excitement and possibilities for me.
4. What does the underlined word “mortified” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Bored. B. Shocked. C. Embarrassed. D. Angry.
5. When did the author become confident?
A. After she joined the club. B. After she got good at skateboarding.
C. After she made friends with Monica. D. After she achieved good results in the game.
6. Why was the author afraid of falling?
A. Her doctor had warned her not to fall. B. Falling would be laughed at by others.
C. She didn't want to hurt her leg again. D. The past experience left her with bad feelings.
7. What did the author think of skateboarding?
A. It would be her life work. B. It was a light on her road of life.
C. It was something she had to do. D. It was the reason for her to get her life back.
C
Do you always keep a bar of chocolate nearby? Perhaps you feel weak or sleepy without your sweets. If so, you may have a problem that millions of others have: sugar addiction. We call those people sugar addicts.
Addiction means doing an activity over and over again, though it has its bad effects. Playing computer games, drinking, and eating are examples of activities that can develop into addictions. There are four stages during a sugar addiction.
Stage one begins with a strong wish for something sweet. This happens because sugar causes the body to produce dopamine (多巴胺). It can create feelings of happiness.
In stage two, even after sugar has been eaten, the hope to eat more sugar remains and grows. This is because the body gets used to the effects of sugar over time. So, it is necessary to eat more sugar to produce happy feelings.
In stage three, when a sugar need is not satisfied, the person feels bad and experiences bad emotional symptoms, like a feeling of shame and dissatisfaction in one’s self. They also feel physical symptoms, such as headaches, sleepiness, and lack of energy.
Over time, a sugar addiction will reach stage four. This is when the worst health effects of sugar addiction can be seen. The person might put on weight because of the added sugar in the food and drinks. Depression is another possible result.
Breaking a sugar addiction can be difficult, but it is important for your health. There are a few things to keep in mind. It’s simple advice you probably have heard before. Eat three meals a day, get enough sleep, and exercise often. Choose healthy sweets, like fruit, and avoid salty snacks. These usually cause people to want to eat sweets. Don’t push yourself too hard. Remember that lifestyle changes happen slowly.
8. Who might have sugar addition?
A. Linda who is crazy about drinking much cola. B. Jack who tries out sugar for a candy company.
C. Tom who sometimes eats snacks between meals. D. Lucy who always enjoys drinking tea every day.
9. In which stage of a sugar addiction may make people get fat?
A. In stage one. B. In stage two. C. In stage three. D. In stage four.
10. How can addicts break a sugar addiction?
A. Sleep less. B. Eat salt. C. Exercise often. D. Avoid sweets.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Guide to Break Sugar Addiction B. Sugar Addiction: Bad for Children
C. The Four Stages of Sugar Addiction D. Sugar Addiction: A Common Problem

Roller coasters are fast and exciting. But passing a painful kidney (肾) stone is not. The process is painful and can take a long time. But American researchers have found that a roller coaster ride just might help those suffering from a kidney stone. They say such rides help patients pass the stones with a 70 percent success rate.
David Wartinger led the study. He found that where the person sits on the roller coaster can make a big difference. He said, “In the pilot study, sitting in the last car of the roller coaster showed about a 64 percent success rate, while sitting in the first few cars only had a 16 percent success rate.”
When it comes to passing kidney stones, not all roller coasters are equal. The researchers used 174 kidney stones of different shapes, sizes and weights to see if each model worked on the same ride and on two other roller coasters. They found that Big Thunder Mountain was the only one that worked. The other two roller coasters both failed the test. Wartinger said the other rides were too fast and too violent. The movement forced the stones against the side of the kidney. He said that the ideal roller coaster is rough and quick with some twists and turns.
It also mattered where the stones were located in the kidney. The researchers found that stones located in the upper part of the kidney model were passed 100 percent.
Wartinger thinks roller coaster rides could really be used as an effective measure. He said that a yearly ride on a roller coaster could even prevent stones from developing. “You need to heed the warnings before going on a roller coaster,” he said “If you have a kidney stone, but are otherwise healthy and meet the requirements of the ride, you can absolutely try it.”
He adds that it’s definitely a lower cost alternative to other treatments. And riding a roller coaster is definitely more interesting!
12. What might passing kidney stones be like?
A. quick.
B. exciting.
C. enjoyable.
D. uncomfortable.
13. Which is useful to the roller coaster treatment?
A. Sitting in the first car of a roller coaster.
B. The stone forced against the side of the kidney.
C. The stone located in the lower part of the kidney.
D. Riding rough and fast roller coasters with twists and turns.
14 What’s probably the advantage of riding a roller coaster?
A. It can prevent the development of kidney stones.
B. It can help anyone besides those with kidney stones.
C. It can prevent danger because of its effective warning.
D. It can apply to everyone with kidney stones effectively.
15. What attitude does Wartinger have towards roller coasters for people having a kidney stone?
A. Concerned. B. Disapproving.
C. Favorable. D. Doubtful.

She worked hard to provide for her children, doing a few part-time jobs to make ends meet. In spite of the challenges, Mary managed to give them a happy and stable childhood.
One Saturday morning, Mary was at home with her children, preparing breakfast for them. Jack was beside her while James was playing alone in the bedroom next to the kitchen. It was a typical weekend, filled with laughter and warmth. Little did they know something unexpected was just around the corner.
As Mary was busy with the food, a fire broke out in the kitchen. Panicked, Mary took hold of Jack and rushed towards the front door. They made it to safety only to find James remained stuck inside. Mary put Jack down and turned back to get James out, but in such a hurry and panic, she missed a step and fell on the ground. Her right ankle got sprained so seriously that she couldn`t stand up. Mary sat on the ground helplessly, her tears mixed with screams, “My kid is still in the house. Somebody, help me!”
At that very moment, Simon, 52, a former army soldier in the same community as Mary, happened to pass her house and saw the terrible scene. He immediately ran across the yard to ask the crying mother where her kid exactly was. In a shaking voice, Mary responded, “In the bedroom next to the kitchen.” The fire spread quickly and the house was filled with thick smoke.

C She didn't want to hurt her leg again. D. The past experience left her with bad feelings.
7. What did the author think of skateboarding?
A. It would be her life work. B. It was a light on her road of life.

A. Linda who is crazy about drinking much cola. B. Jack who tries out sugar for a candy company.
C. Tom who sometimes eats snacks between meals. D. Lucy who always enjoys drinking tea every day.
9. In which stage of a sugar addiction may make people get fat?

“You need to heed the warnings before going on a roller coaster” he said “If you have a kidney stone, but are otherwise healthy and meet the requirements of the ride, you can absolutely try it.”
He adds that it’s definitely a lower cost alternative to other treatments. And riding a roller coaster is definitely more interesting!
12. What might passing kidney stones be like?

D. uncomfortable.
13. Which is useful to the roller coaster treatment?

14. What’s probably the advantage of riding a roller coaster?
C. Favorable. D. Doubtful.

I’m sorry to hear about the challenges you’re facing.
To make more friends, consider joining clubs or sports teams where you can meet like-minded people. Besides, don’t hesitate to initiate conversations with classmates and participate in social events. 36-year-old Mary was a single mother living in a small town in Cleveland, Ohio with her 3-year-old twin sons, Jack and James.
Simon looked around and saw a blanket hanging beside a pool full of water in the middle of the yard.

【答案】范文
Without hesitation, Simon took action. Dipping the blanket in the water pool and covering his head with it for necessary protection, he rushed into the house. Unable to see things clearly through the smoke and fire, Simon lowered himself to the ground, stretched his hands and felt his way forward until he reached the bedroom. Just then, a faint voice of a child caught his attention. Following the sound, he finally found James lying in a corner, frightened and helpless. He grabbed James, wrapped him in the blanket and made his way back towards the open door.
Simon rushed out of the burning house with James in his arms. Seeing James carried to safety, Mary breathed a sigh of relief. At that moment, firefighters arrived at the scene and put out the fire. Then Simon, Mary and her children were all sent to a nearby hospital, where they received timely medical care. Simon’s heroic act saved James’ life. Mary couldn’t thank him enough for his selflessness and bravery. But Simon said smilingly, “It was no big deal. I just did what I was supposed to do.” This experience brought the community closer, and Simon`s courageous act inspired others to consider what they would do in similar situations.
