①You may often hear some rumors(传闻) about animals. For example, one
dog year equals about seven human years, and chameleons(变色龙) change color to
match their environment. Today, let’s talk about birds. It is said that if you touch a
baby bird, the parents will completely abandon(抛弃) it. Do you really believe
that?
②In fact, most birds have a very poor sense of smell, so in most cases they are
unable to even notice the smell of humans on baby birds. Not only that, but most types
of birds aren’t so quick to abandon their young when they sense danger. Some types of
birds will even do their best to protect their young when they are in danger.
③Indeed, in very few known cases, parent birds sometimes abandon their nests
as a result of something touching their young, just because they notice it by sight, not
smell. In most cases when the parent birds find their young are touched, they usually
won’t care, other than to be a little more careful than normal. Sometimes, they may
temporarily(暂时地) abandon the nest in order to keep a better eye on whatever
disturbed their nest coming back.
④What’s more, in most cases, even if the nest is destroyed by wind or
something to that effect, you can create a new one and put all the baby birds back in it.
And when the parents come back, they won’t care their baby birds are in a different
nest, so long as you put the new nest near where the old one was so they can find it.
( D )1.Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Birds have a very good sense of smell.
B. A baby bird will die soon if it is touched by someone.
C. Whatever disturbed the nest, the parent birds will abandon it and never come back.
D. Some birds will protect their babies when they are in danger.

( D )2.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

place of the old one.

(2024·北京改编)The school year began. As president of the recycling club,
Scott was thinking about new activities to encourage other students to become more
enthusiastic(热心的) about recycling. His club had helped to recycle a lot of waste
for the past five years and he hoped that this year they would do even better.
Scott went home one day and looked online, hoping to find ideas for events the
club could organize at school. During his research, he learned that the amount(数
量) of electronic waste, or e-waste, is increasing rapidly. Scott was upset with
himself for not noticing this problem sooner. At that moment, he began to develop a
plan.
“There is a special project I want us to work on this term,” Scott announced
(宣布) at the recycling club meeting the next day. “We have all heard about e-
waste, but recently I learned about the bad effects it’s having on our environment.”
He went on to tell the club members that he wanted them to organize an e-waste drive—
a day when students and their families could drop off unwanted electronics to be
recycled. “Now let’s get to work!”
For several weeks, the recycling club was busy preparing for the upcoming e-
waste drive, or e-drive as it was soon called.
The big day finally arrived, and Scott was nervous. He and the other members
arrived at school early to make sure that everything would go smoothly. Everyone
waited eagerly, hoping that students of the school would take part in the event.
It wasn’t long before the first car pulled into the school parking lot. After a while,
more people arrived. Phones, TV sets, computers and keyboards soon began piling
up(堆积).
At the end of the event, Scott heard someone suggest that the school should have
an e-drive event every term. Scott smiled, realizing that a simple action could truly
have a lasting influence.

Travelers’ Tales
Every year, a magazine called Executive Travel organizes a competition to find
the best airline of the year. Travelers from all over the world are invited to vote(投
票) for the most punctual(准时的), the safest and the friendliest airline. The
competition also invites them to tell their most horrible stories during their travels. Now
let’s read some travelers’ tales of bad flying experiences.
One traveler shared his story which happened on a certain African airline. Even if
some passengers had boarding cards, they still couldn’t get the seats, because more
tickets were sold than the actual seats available. They complained and shouted at the
airport. Finally, the flight attendants solved the problem by setting a funny rule:
Those passengers who ran fastest around the plane twice could get the seats at last.
An overbooked flight that was going from Heathrow Airport to America gave
another traveler a bit of a shock. Dressed only in trousers, a shirt and socks, the
traveler had been allowed by the flight attendants to leave the aircraft to see if he could
get a workmate aboard. But when he returned a few minutes later, he found the plane
closed up and about to start moving—with his shoes, wallet, passport and luggage
on board. He knocked heavily on the door and then was allowed to get back inside.
Luggage is also a rich source of horror stories. There was an unlucky traveler who
left Chicago where the temperature was minus(零下) 11 degrees centigrade. He was
going to attend an important meeting in Dallas where the temperature was as high as
26.7 degrees centigrade. Unfortunately, his suitcase was sent to Los Angeles by
mistake and there was no way to get it back to him before the meeting. So he had
to ____________.
1. Whom does Executive Travel invite to take part in the vote?
2. On the African airline, who among those passengers who had boarding cards but no
seats ended up not getting one?
3. In the second tale, why did the traveler leave the aircraft?
Travelers from all over the world.
Those who ran most slowly around the plane twice.
To see if he could get a workmate aboard.
4. What can be filled in the blank of the last sentence to make the tale complete and

It is reported that thousands of red UK phone boxes will be protected from being
taken down under the new rules. The UK’s first phone box started appearing in 1921,
with the special red style coming out five years later.
As smartphones have become part of everyday life, the public payphone boxes
may seem out of date. But Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator(通信管理
局), says they can still be a “lifeline” for people in need.
“Some of the phone boxes we plan to protect are used to make low numbers of
calls. But if one of those calls is from a sad child, an accident victim(受害者),
that public phone line can be a lifeline at a time of great need,” says Selina Chadha,
a leader in Ofcom.
Ofcom plans to protect 5,000 phone boxes, especially in poor smartphone
coverage(覆盖范围) areas. “We also want to make sure that people in those areas,
often in poor areas, can still make calls,” she adds.
According to the official report, nearly half of the phone boxes in the UK have
been taken down because of the growth of the smartphone use. It is said that more than
6,500 unused phone boxes have so far been turned into mini community libraries or
pop-up coffee shops under a plan called “Adopt a Kiosk(公用电话亭)”, which
allows local organizations to buy a red phone box for only one pound and turn it into
something useful.
1. Will there be more and more phone boxes in the UK?
2. When did the first red style phone box start appearing in the UK?
3. According to the passage, why did Ofcom plan to protect some of the phone boxes
although people hardly make phone calls through them?
No. /No, there won’t.
In 1926.
Because the phone boxes can be a lifeline for people in need and people in poor
smartphone coverage areas can make phone calls through them.
4. Like the phone boxes in the UK, many old buildings are taken down in China. Do
you agree with that action? Explain.
No, I don’t agree. Because some of the old buildings are symbols of history. And they
should be protected. (答案不唯一,言之有理即可)
