“Your request is out of the question,” the FC said. Robert had difficulty in controlling himself, but he managed somehow. He explained that he wanted the money in order to make more programmes.
“And why do you want to do that?” the FC asked sharply. Again, Robert almost lost his temper. “Because more and more people are listening to my department’s programmes. There’s great demand for them,” he answered.
The FC did not seem to believe him. But Robert had a report on the numbers of listeners to all EBC programmes. The FC became less confident. Robert threw the report down on the table and told him to read it.
The FC looked at it in silence. The figures (数字) proved that he had been wrong, but he did not want to admit it. “Well,” he finally said, “I may have made a small mistake.” Robert noticed the word “may.” He got up to leave. But he had the feeling that he would get the money after all.

Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, many people begin to look for fun online. Watching livestreaming (直播的) shows has become part of their lives. At the same time, traditional culture has found a bigger stage online. Many traditional artists are starting to livestream on Douyin and Bilibili. Some of them sing Peking Opera, some show their folk handcrafts (民间手工艺) while others perform Chinese classical music. A growing number of people are becoming interested in traditional culture because of livestreaming.
Li Jun is a Peking Opera performer with the Shanghai Jingju Theater Company. After the COVID-19 outbreak, the 59-year-old man took up his smartphone and started livestreaming. Unlike performing on a formal stage, Li uses ordinary places as his stage, including his backyard and study room. Apart from singing, Li also teaches audience about Peking Opera. People can ask him questions and get answers directly.
“Livestreaming has brought this elegant (高雅的) art down to earth.” one viewer said. “It gives young people an easier access to this traditional art and learn more about it.” Li has more than 6,000 fans on Douyin, while one of his videos got 42,000views on Bilibili.
On March 26th, 2020, Bilibili livestreamed a Huafu show on the third China Huafu Day (中国华服日). Performers presented clothes in traditional Chinese styles, including those from Wei, Tang and Ming dynasties. Passage 4
Our eyes can deal with 36, 000 bits of information every hour, many messages for our brain to connect with the world around us. We often say that we eat with our five senses. So what happens if we eat with our eyes closed? Would we enjoy food in the same way?
Eating with eyes closed
Since years ago, some restaurants offer to eat meals with eyes closed, a special experience to “reconnect with food” in a different way. The lack of senses like eye-sight helps us pay more attention to what we are eating. Those who take the challenge say the taste of many meals becomes stronger.
Playing with these feelings is possible from our home or even right now. If we think about a lemon, our brain sends orders to make our mouths water, as a natural reaction of our bodies to the acid flavor(酸味). It also happens if we smell a BBQ in the garden of a neighbor. We probably wish a burger badly when we smell it .
Thinking about eating less? This may help. Eating with our eyes closed can make us think we are eating more than we actually are. A German study gave ice-creams to several students. Part of them with their eyes closed ate fewer before they were full than the students who could see. Even though this cannot be a definite way to weight loss, meals can be funnier for sure.
Enjoy with our five senses
Sight may be an influence when we have to choose what to eat or even how much. We will probably eat more in a comfortable restaurant than in front of our computer at work. Color and presentation of the food matters too. Supermarkets usually put products with lively colors at eyelevel. In many cases, stores add extra colors to food to make it look better. But that does not mean they are healthier at all.
Are any other senses involved when we eat? Yes! If we listen to a cook telling us how wonderful the recipe of those fish and chips is, we will probably think it’s the best fast food we have had so far. In the end, everything is important for the complete enjoyment of a meal.
13. What does the underlined “it” refer to in paragraph 3?
A. The BBQ. B. The lemon. C. The garden. D. The acid flavor.
14. Eating with eyes closed will probably make ________.
A. people funnier B. ice-cream taste better
C. people healthier D. the taste of food stronger
15. What does the underlined word “involved” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Learning to eat. B. Learning to cook.
C. Taking part in eating. D. Taking part in cooking.
16. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. We are what we eat. B. We eat with our five senses.
C. Our health depends on what we eat. D. Eating with eyes closed becomes popular.
【答案】13. A 14. D 15. C 16. B

Shadow puppetry (皮影戏) started during the Western Han Dynasty and it has a long history of more than 2,000 years. It used to be popular in the countryside because it was simple and cheap.
The puppets are usually made from leather or paper. It is hard to make them. The puppet-makers have to take 24 steps, which include washing the leather, carving (雕刻) and painting, to make a puppet.
Just like many things that are in danger, traditional arts also face the risk of disappearing. “Many young people still think that shadow puppetry is an old-fashioned folk art (民间艺术),” said Liu Chaokan, the sixth-generation inheritor (继承人) of shadow puppetry in Yunnan province.
Liu understands why old art forms couldn’t interest young people, so he connects new stories with the traditional form of storytelling. In a recent show based on the ancient Chinese novel Journey to the West, Baigujing dances to a Korean pop song. Popular Chinese cartoon characters, together with the modern factors (元素), are Liu’s secret in getting the attention of children. “Since they couldn’t understand those old stories, why don’t we show them the cartoon characters they love in shadow puppetry shows?” said Liu.
To keep the old art forever young, Liu thinks they should respect its traditions and protect the basic of the art.

The FC did not seem to believe him. But Robert had a report on the numbers of listeners to all EBC programmes. The FC became less confident. Robert threw the report down on the table and told him to read it.

People can ask him questions and get answers directly.
