“Even the hardest life must be lived brightly!” This is one of the famous lines from the hit TV show To the Wonder (《我的阿勒泰》). In the show, herdsmen (牧民) in Altay, Xinjiang, move to new grasslands.
Herdsmen move as the seasons change. In spring around April, herdsmen take their livestock (牲畜) halfway up the mountain. In summer, livestock will be moved to the top of the mountain for greener grass. In autumn, they come down from the mountain to spend the winter.
Wulijiang Qialihaer, 13, has seen her grandparents and dad go through this cycle every year. “Before they leave, they usually take everything they need to the top of the mountain, including food and clothing.” Qialihaer said. “We have more than 200 heads of livestock. ”
When her dad was a boy, her grandparents usually picked one or two children of theirs to go with them. The rest stayed at home for school. However, now for Qialihaer, she only goes to the mountaintop when it’s summer vacation. “I enjoy the beautiful views along the way, the sky, the grass and the clouds,” Qialihaer said.
For Aybol, 14, his family has a faster way to move: riding a truck. “I wake up at six in the morning. Dad puts the cows and sheep on the trucks. Mom packs my favorite milk food and dried meat,” Aybol said. “We won’t forget to take our yurt (毡房) with us.”
Although there are no cartoons or video games in the mountains, Aybol doesn’t feel bored at all. “My friends also come with their families as our yurts are close together. We usually ride horses and look for squirrels in the trees.” Aybol said.

(23-24八年级下·江苏徐州·期末)Many years ago, I bought a house in Sunshine Town, and we still go there every summer. The first time we stayed there, our neighbour Mary came and brought us a box with some tomatoes and a bottle of wine (葡萄酒) in it. It was nice of her to do it. But when we looked at the tomatoes, we were worried because they looked terrible: not at all like the nice, round, shiny things you get in a supermarket. And the wine was cloudy, in a funny old bottle with no label (标签) on it. These couldn’t be any good, we thought. But we were thankful for her kindness, so we tried them.
What a wonderful taste! Those tomatoes made me think of the ones my uncle grew when I was a child. Nowadays supermarket tomatoes look perfect but they have a taste of water. Nobody’s going to have a happy memory of those. Mary’s wine may be cloudy and come out of an old bottle, but it was perfect.

At the exit, the cold wind made him think of his gloves. He looked for them in his coat and pants but could not find them anywhere. He bought the black gloves at a good price for just $35 years ago. They were soft and very comfortable. He took great care of them, so they were in good condition.
George looked calm on his face but felt mad inside. He went into the supermarket again. He followed the same route he had walked before. Several minutes of searching turned out to be useless. His black gloves were gone. “People have changed,” he said to himself. “Years ago, if somebody picked up something lost, they would give it back.”
A few days later, George decided to buy another pair of gloves.
Before buying new gloves, he stepped into the supermarket again to try his luck, seeing if his gloves were returned to the lost and found office. “What colour are they?” the woman in the office asked. “Black,” he answered. In 1674, I was born on my father’s small farm in Nottinghamshire, England. I was the third of five sons. My childhood was very happy. I liked going to school and learning new things. But I often daydreamed about going to sea.
One day, Father asked, “Lemuel, have you thought about your future? I think you would be a good doctor.”
I wanted to please him, so I said, “Yes, Father. I’ll go to Cambridge University and study medicine.” But as I spoke, I was thinking, “At university, I can also learn things that will be useful to a sailor.”
After several years of study, I became a doctor. Not long after, I asked my sweetheart, Mary, to marry me. Before long, we had children, a boy and a girl. They gave us great joy. I enjoyed being a doctor for the first few years. But then I became bored, and ideas of travel filled my mind. I imagined going to far-off places and seeing wonderful new things.
“Mary,” I said one day, “I need more adventures in my life. The captain of a ship about to sail has offered me a job as the ship’s doctor. I don’t know how long the journey will take, but I promise I will return. And when I do, I’ll tell you and the children all about my adventures.”
So in 1699, I set sail on the Antelope from Bristol. That city is a large and very old port in the southwest of England. The captain was a good man and had sailed a great deal!
“Welcome aboard. Doctor Gulliver,” he said, “First we’ll be sailing down the Atlantic Ocean and around the coast of Africa. Then we’ll sail through the Indian Ocean to the South Seas.” Our journey went well until one morning, somewhere near Tasmania in the South Pacific Ocean.
“I don’t like the look of those clouds,” the captain said, “I think a storm is coming.”
Within an hour, a big storm began. The sea rose in great, angry waves much taller than the Antelope. The wind, now as strong as a hurricane, made a terrible sound.
“The wind is blowing the ship off course!” shouted the captain. “Look out!”

One day last month, I was talking to my writer friend Alex about writing. At the end of our conversation, I asked him, “As a writer, you must enjoy writing, right?”
“Not always,” he said. He thought for a moment and added, “I enjoy writing when it gives me a sense of pride.”
“You know,” Alex went on, “some articles are harder to write than others. Sometimes, I’m not sure if the readers will like my article. I try to write as well as I can. When I finally look at my work, I feel good about myself.”
Alex’s answer made me think of a trip ten years ago. My friends and I were halfway up Mount Hua after a short bus ride. It was a rainy day, and the mountain is famous for its steepness. As we looked up at its peaks (山顶), some of us thought of giving up. “You’ll feel sorry about your decision,” our guide said when he encouraged (鼓励) us to keep going.
Soon, we arrived at “Yaozi Fanshen (鹞子翻身)”. It’s the most famous and challenging attraction on East Peak. We climbed up the almost vertical (垂直的) rock face (岩壁) by pulling at the iron chains (铁链). We were very tired. But we felt proud.
We finally climbed three peaks of Mount Hua that day. In some places, we even took the steeper way. We found that the more difficult the climb was, the prouder we felt.
Some mountains now provide visitors with an easier way up — a ride on an escalator (自动扶梯). But just as it is in writing, for some things in our lives, the harder way brings better rewards (回报).

2.What was the weather like when the author and his friends climbed Mount Hua ten years ago?
3.How did the author and his friends feel after reaching “Yaozi Fanshen”?

They never got to Cairo. They ran into a thick fog on the river one night and they couldn’t see a yard in front of them. I he next day it cleared but there was no sight of a town that looked like Cairo.
“Maybe we missed it in the fog,” Jim said.
So they continued drifting down the river because the raft couldn’t sail back up the river against the current.

“Look out!”

Do you live in a city? Do you know how cities began? Long long ago, the world had only a few thousand people. These people moved (搬迁) from one place to another. They moved over the land (陆地), hunting animals for food.
No one knows how or when these people learned about growing food. But when they did, their lives changed. They did not have to move houses any more. They could stay in one place and grow it. People began to live near each other, so the first village (村庄) grew. Many people came to work in the villages, and these villages became larger and larger.
Then people had machines, life in the villages changed again. People built factories (工厂). More and more people lived near the factories. So the villages grew into cities. Some of them grew very big. Today, it’s strange that some people are moving back to small villages. Can you tell me why?
