As a boy, Robert Ballard liked to read about shipwrecks. He read a lot about the Titanic. “My lifelong dream was to find this great ship,” he says.
On August 31, 1985, Ballard’s dream came true. He found the wreck of the Titanic. The ship was in two main parts lying four kilometers (2.4 miles) under the sea. Using video cameras and an undersea robot, Ballard looked around the ship. He found many items that told the sad story of the Titanic’s end. For example, he found a child’s shoes, a reminder of the many deaths that happened that night in 1912.
In 1986, Ballard visited the Titanic again. This time, he reached the ship in a small submarine. A deep-sea robot — a “swimming eyeball” — took photos inside the ship. When other people saw the photos, they wanted to visit the ship, too.
When Ballard returned in 2004, he found the Titanic in very bad condition. Other explorers had taken away about 6,000 items, like clothes, dishes, and shoes. Some even took pieces of the ship. They think these things should be moved to a safer place, but Ballard doesn’t agree.
Ballard believes that taking things from the Titanic is like robbing a grave. Instead, he wants to put lights and cameras on and around the shipwreck. This way, people can see the great shipwreck and remember what happened to it. “As long as she needs protection,” says Ballard, “the Titanic will always be part of my life.”
4. What is the reading mainly about?
A. Visitors to the Titanic leave it in bad condition.
B. The great shipwreck and historical treasure — Titanic.

A. found a girl’s shoes in the shipwreck
B. took pieces of the ship to protect it in safer places
C took photos of the shipwreck with a “swimming eyeball”
D. explored around the shipwreck with undersea equipment
6. What kind of person is Ballard?
A. Adventurous and generous. B. Creative and hardworking.
C. Devoted and responsible. D. Inspiring and brave.
7. Which statement would Ballard probably agree with?
A. People should not remove anything from the Titanic.

What will be connected to the Internet of Things? You. Your child. Your car, clothes, and house. The cook, the bread, the honey, the bees, and more. That’s why some people call it the “Internet of Everything”. By the year 2040, anything and everything that can be tagged with a wireless identifier will probably have one or more. By that time, these tiny, wireless electronic devices could do a lot more than just identify an object. They could relay data on size, shape, and location or receive instructions on what to do next.
These devices might be powered by light, motion, radio waves, or some other means. But they will not need to be plugged in or have batteries. Bigger devices in some cases control the smaller ones. Access to all those things in your reach will be through your phone or your virtual personal assistant.
The Internet of Things is already a thing. Right now it is in its early stages. In the future, when wireless tracking devices become cheap enough to spread, it will be a game-changer. Some industries are developing it because it gives them what they want most, including information about you, where you go, and what you do.
However, the Internet of Things could hit some bumps along the way. Tagging and tracking billions of things is a large and costly project. Technical issues for the wireless tagging of objects include size, durability, increasing transmission distance, and finding its precise location. Besides, privacy could be an issue. Who will be watching? Who will have access to your information? How will they use it? Other concerns are terrorism, inequality, identity, theft, and encroachment (侵入) on personal space.
To summarise, the Internet of Things is the connection of everything that can be connected. It’s growing and it brings great promise and possible danger.
8. What can we know about wireless electronic devices in the future?
A. They are used mainly to identify an object.
B. They need to be charged before being used.
C. They all receive instructions from bigger devices.
D. They can be accessed through virtual facilities.
9. Which aspect of the Internet of Things does Paragraph 4 mainly focus on?
A. The failure it could cause. B. The attention it could draw.
C. The trouble it could encounter. D. The advantages it could have.
10. What can we learn about the future of the Internet of Things from the passage?
A. It will be cheaper but less secure.
B. It will be spread widely by industries.
C. It will help people solve technical issues.
D. It can be a game-changer as well as a threat to privacy.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards the Internet of Things?
A. Neutral. B. Negative. C. Confused. D. Optimistic.
D 9. C 10. D 11. A

(此外,隐私也可能会成为一个问题)”和“Other concerns are terrorism, inequality, identity, theft, and encroachment (侵入) on personal space.
根据第三段中“In the future, when wireless tracking devices become cheap enough to spread, it will be a game-changer.(未来,当无线追踪设备变得足够便宜并得以广泛普及之时,它将带来巨大变革)”和第四段中“Besides, privacy could be an issue. Who will be watching? Who will have access to your information? How will they use it? (此外,隐私也可能会成为一个问题。谁会在暗中监视?谁能够获取你的信息?他们会如何使用这些信息)”可知,物联网既可能带来重大变革,也可能对隐私构成威胁。故选D项。

The poetry of William Butler Yeats often touches upon the idea of chucking it all away and heading off somewhere. One of his best-known poems about moving on to another place is “The Lake Isle of Innisfree”, a poem which was first published in 1890 when Yeats was still a young man in his 20s.
Innisfree is an island located within Lough Gill, in County Sligo, Ireland. It seems that Yeats wants to forget about the complicated world and get back to nature because the life there will be more spiritually fulfilling and peaceful. This is what “The Lake Isle of Innisfree” is about.
In summary, Yeats describes his intention to go to Innisfree and build a small cabin to grow beans and keep bees for honey, and live on his own there. The world is quiet and peaceful at Innisfree. The sound of the birds is the only thing puncturing the peaceful silence of the evening. Inhabiting the town or city as he does, a place marked by pavements, roads, and all the bustle and noise of urban life, he nevertheless feels the earth calling to him.
One of the most intriguing features of “The Lake Isle of Innisfree” is the repetitive language Yeats employs to convey meanings. In the poem, the line “I will arise and go now” appears twice. Does the poet really intend to go? Or is the poem merely an expression of his desire to do so, when he knows that he will probably never have the courage to leave the city behind and go into the seclusion (清净) of the lake isle? There is, perhaps, no straightforward answer, nor should there be.
12 What do we know about Innisfree?
A. Yeats went there in his 20s.
B. It is an imaginary place in Yeats’ poem.
C. It can bring peace and spiritual fulfilment.
D. Yeats wrote a poem about it after going there.
13. What does the underlined word “puncturing” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A Flying. B. Banning. C. Breaking. D. Sweeping.
14. What is the probable intention of using repetitive language in this poem?
A. To draw the readers’ attention.
B. To express the poet’s hesitation.
C. To emphasise the pattern and rhythm.
D. To make the language more understandable.
15. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To analyse one of Yeats’ poems.
B. To attract people to visit Innisfree.
C. To introduce the life story of Yeats.
D. To appreciate Yeats’ fantastic writing skills.
C 13. C 14. B 15. A
根据第二段中“Innisfree is an island located within Lough Gill, in County Sligo, Ireland. It seems that Yeats wants to forget about the complicated world and get back to nature because the life there will be more spiritually fulfilling and peaceful. (茵尼斯弗利岛是一座位于爱尔兰斯莱戈郡吉尔湖中的岛屿。叶芝似乎想忘却纷繁复杂的世界,回归自然,因为那里的生活在精神上会更充实、更安宁)”可知,茵尼斯弗利岛能带来内心的平静和精神上的满足。故选C项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。画线词所在句的前一句“The world is quiet and peaceful at Innisfree. (在茵尼斯弗利岛,世界是宁静祥和的)”表明这里的世界非常宁静,再结合画线词的上文“The sound of the birds (鸟儿的声音)”和下文“the peaceful silence of the evening (宁静的夜晚)”可推知,鸟儿的声音应该是打破了夜晚的这种宁静,画线词在这里意为“打破”,与Breaking“打破”意思相近。故选C项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“One of the most intriguing features of “The Lake Isle of Innisfree” is the repetitive language Yeats employs to convey meanings. In the poem, the line “I will arise and go now” appears twice. Does the poet really intend to go? Or is the poem merely an expression of his desire to do so, when he knows that he will probably never have the courage to leave the city behind and go into the seclusion (清净) of the lake isle?
故选A项。

The Power of Cooperation
In the small town of Willow Creek, the competition between Jack and Emily was well-known, just like the beautiful autumn leaves that made the town look golden every fall. Jack was the leader of the football team, and Emily was the head of the debate club. Even though they liked different things, they were both respected for their ability to lead and their strong will. They hardly ever met, and they had never worked together on any project.
One day, the school announced a new plan: a community project that needed the help of different clubs to raise money for a local children’s hospital. To everyone’s surprise, Jack and Emily were chosen to be the leaders of this project. At first, they were not sure about working together, but they understood how important the project was and agreed to forget their differences.
Their first job was to plan a charity event that would bring the school community together. They decided to have a sports talent show, a place where students could show their skills and help a good cause. Jack, with his experience in sports, took care of organizing the details, while Emily, with her ability to persuade, was in charge of promoting the event and getting people to join.
As the day of the talent show got closer, some problems started to appear. One big issue was choosing the judges for the talent show.
“I just don’t get it, Jack,” Emily said, frustration evident in her voice. “Why can’t we have a mix of judges? It’s not just about sports. It’s about showcasing the talents of all our students.”
Jack leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms. “Emily, we need to keep the focus on sports. That’s what this event is about. We want to inspire our athletes, not just anyone with any talent.”
Talking to each other also became a problem. Jack’s straight and sometimes rough way of speaking often made Emily feel like she wasn’t being listened to, while her long and detailed explanations annoyed Jack because he wanted to make quick decisions. They had a hard time finding a way to talk that worked for both of them, which led to misunderstandings and delays in their planning.

One possible version:
To resolve their communication issues, Jack and Emily decided to meet regularly for short, structured discussions. They agreed to take turns speaking and listening without interruption, ensuring that each person’s ideas were heard and respected. For the judge selection, they compromised by inviting both local sports figures and a mix of teachers and community leaders, creating a diverse panel that represented the school’s values. With everything settled, they eagerly anticipated the positive impact their collaborative efforts would have on the upcoming performance.
On the day of the talent show, the gymnasium was filled with excited students, teachers, and community members. The stage was adorned with colorful decorations, and the atmosphere was electric. Acts ranged from basketball free-throws and soccer juggling to gymnastics routines and martial arts demonstrations, showcasing the school’s athletic talent and diversity. The event was a resounding success, raising a significant amount for the children’s hospital and demonstrating the power of collaboration between Jack and Emily. Their initial skepticism had turned into pride as they watched the community come together for a worthy cause.

When Ballard returned in 2004 he found the Titanic in very bad condition.
B The great shipwreck and historical treasure — Titanic.
C. Robert Ballard found the Titanic and wants to keep it safe.
D. Robert Ballard’s hopes that more people will visit the Titanic.
5. The first time he explored the Titanic, Ballard ______.
A. found a girl’s shoes in the shipwreck
B. took pieces of the ship to protect it in safer places
C. took photos of the shipwreck with a “swimming eyeball”
D. explored around the shipwreck with undersea equipment
6. What kind of person is Ballard?
A. Adventurous and generous. B. Creative and hardworking.
C. Devoted and responsible. D. Inspiring and brave.
7. Which statement would Ballard probably agree with?
A. People should not remove anything from the Titanic.
B. Lights and cameras will hurt the remains of the Titanic.
C. The Titanic wreck should be moved out of the water completely.
D. More funds should be provided for the Titanic by the government.
C

12. What do we know about Innisfree?

D. Yeats wrote a poem about it after going there.
