Now she is the presenter for Universe TV’s news programmes. I asked her how she had achieved success, and she told me her story. “It was my mother who taught me to be curious: She had a great love of everything in the universe and she taught me to be interested in mankind and nature,” Junyan told me. “We would look in old nests to find birds’ feathers and we would even turn over stones to look at the little creatures there. I loved doing that,” remembered Junyan. She said, “My mother was a strong character. Although there were lots of difficulties to overcome, she never let her problems defeat her. She worked extremely hard to support me through school and during my time at Fudan University. Her attitude towards life will never stop influencing my thoughts and actions.” After graduating from university, she became a reporter for a local newspaper. She said she chose to be a journalist because it is important that people grasp what is going on around them. I asked her if there was any special moment that made her realise this and she replied that it was after she was asked to inspect an illegal business. Her report helped the people who had been affected and it also helped the government inspect the company and catch the guilty people. “That is when I realised the importance of being a journalist,” said Junyan. “Writing that report wasn’t easy, but I realised that people needed to know and so I didn’t give up,” Junyan told me. I asked Junyan what she liked most about her job and she said that although there wasn’t much glory in a reporter’s existence, she found it interesting and challenging. “I meet a lot of people and go to many different places. I’m never bored with this job!” She added that as a reporter she needed many different skills and was constantly challenged to learn new things. Finally, I asked her if after many years she still felt curious. Smiling brightly, she told me, “Nothing that I learned from my mother has ever left me. Today when I’m looking for stories, I still feel like I’m turning over stones to see what might be hiding beneath!” 24. How did Junyan’s mother influence her? A. Junyan’s mother worked part-time to support her. B. Junyan’s-mother taught her how to write a good report. C. Junyan’s mother accompanied her to study at university. 根据第三段中“She said she chose to be a journalist because it is important that people grasp what is going on around them.( 她说,她选择成为一名记者,因为人们了解周围发生的事情是很重要的。)” 根据第三段中“Her report helped the people who had been affected and it also helped the government inspect the company and catch the guilty people. “I hat is when I realised the importance of being a journalist,” said Junyan. “Writing that report wasn’t easy, but I realised that people needed to know and so I didn’t give up,” Junyan told me.( 她的报告帮助了那些受到影响的人,也帮助了政府检查公司,抓住了有罪的人。“那时我才意识到作为一名记者的重要性,”君燕说。“写那份报告并不容易,但我意识到人们需要知道,所以我没有放弃,”君燕告诉我。)” 可知,王君燕认为调查非法企业写报告虽然不容易(困难),但帮助了受影响的人,也帮助政府检查公司并抓住了有罪的人(有意义),B选项“Difficult but meaningful.”(困难但有意义)正确。故选B项。 【27题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章大意以及最后一段中“I’m never bored with this job!” She added that as a reporter she needed many different skills and was constantly challenged to learn new things. Finally, I asked her if after many years she still felt curious. Smiling brightly, she told me, “Nothing that I learned from my mother has ever left me. Today when I’m looking for stories, I still feel like I’m turning over stones to see what might be hiding beneath!”(我对这份工作永远不会感到厌倦!” 故选A项。 C Humans have names, of course, and dogs and cats may react when their names are called. Some ocean animals, including the dolphin, invent their own names when they are very young. And the birds called parrots may also use names. Each of these naming animals also have the ability to learn and say individual new sounds throughout their lives, as does the African elephant, the research shows. African elephants are among the largest animals that live on land. They call each other by and answer to individual names, a new study finds. Such communication is rare in the animal world. The names are one part of the low sounds, or rumbles, elephants make. They can hear these sounds over long distances where they live in the savannah — large grassy areas of land mixed with woodlands. Scientists believe that animals with complex social structures may be more likely to use individual names. Stuart Pimm of Duke University is an ecologist who was not involved with the study. He said: “If you’re looking after a large family, you’ve got to be able to say, Hey, Virginia, get over here!” The study was released in the publication Nature Ecology and Evolution. In the study, biologists used machine learning to find the use of names in recordings of savanna elephant sounds. The sounds were recorded at Kenya’s Samburu National Reserve and Amboseli National Park. The researchers followed the elephants as they traveled to observe which one called out and which one appeared to answer. By examining only the audio data, the computer model predicted which elephant was being called 28 percent of the time, likely due to the inclusion of its name. When fed meaningless data, the model only correctly predicted eight percent of calls. Researchers tested their results by playing recordings to individual elephants. The elephants reacted more energetically, moving their ears and lifting their trunks, to recordings that contained their names. Sometimes elephants did not react in any way to the sounds of elephant names other than their own. Ecologist George Wittemyer, who helped write the study, said “Elephants are incredibly social, always talking and touching each other — this naming is probably one of the things that underpins their ability to communicate to individuals.” 28. The author mentions many anımals in Paragraph 1 to ______. A. question the result B. introduce the topic C. illustrate an argument D. present an assumption 29. From the passage, we can know that ______. A. communication between animals is rare in the animal world B. African elephants can’t hear low sounds over long distances C. African elephants use individual names when communicating D. animals with simple social structures tend to use individual names 30. What did the researchers do in the study? A. They used the computer model to analyze the audio data. B. They followed the elephants to record their daily routine. C. They used machine learning to communicate with elephants. D. They tested the results by playing recordings to a group of elephants. B 29. C 30. 根据第一段“Humans have names, of course, and dogs and cats may react when their names are called. Some ocean animals, including the dolphin, invent their own names when they are very young. And the birds called parrots may also use names. Each of these naming animals also have the ability to learn and say individual new sounds throughout their lives, as does the African elephant, the research shows.( 当然,人是有名字的,狗和猫在被叫名字的时候也会有反应。 根据第二段中“African elephants are among the largest animals that live on land. They call each other by and answer to individual names, a new study finds.( 非洲象是陆地上最大的动物之一。 根据第四段中“In the study, biologists used machine learning to find the use of names in recordings of savanna elephant sounds. When fed meaningless data, the model only correctly predicted eight percent of calls.( 在这项研究中,生物学家使用机器学习来查找热带草原大象声音录音中名字的使用情况。 故选A项。 D When it was announced in 2018 that the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai had created the world’s first cloned monkeys, Zhongzhong and Huahua, heated discussions followed online. In fact, cloning has always been with us. It is a way of making an exact copy of another animal or plant. It happens in plants when gardeners take cuttings from growing plants to make new ones. It also happens in animals when identical twins are produced from the same egg. These are both examples of natural clones. Cloning has two major uses. First, gardeners use it to produce large quantities of plants for sale. Second, it is valuable for research on new plant species and for medical research on animals. Cloning plants is fairly straightforward, while cloning animals is much more complicated and difficult. Over the years, many scientists failed in their attempts to clone animals, but their determination and patience paid off in 1996 with a breakthrough—the cloning of Dolly the sheep. With the advances of scientific research, cloning will have several major uses, in the future. For one thing, it could be used to breed animal species which are endangered, or even bring back species which are now extinct. For another, it could be used to grow human organs or tissue in animals, which could be used for human organ transplants or medical treatments. Finally, cloning could be used to breed animals that will provide us with higher quality meat, milk, or eggs. While there are technical issues that need to be worked through to make widespread cloning possible, the biggest concerns are moral. For example, if scientists brought an extinct animal back into existence, it would probably end up fiving in a zoo. That is not very good for the animal. Even worse for the animal is using it as a source of organ transplants—because it will be injured or even die. In addition, many people worry that eating animal products that result from cloning might be harmful to our health over time. The possibility of using cloning to produce human beings is an even bigger concern. What would happen if such knowledge ended up in the wrong hands? When it comes to cloning, we wonder, ultimately, whether cloning will help or harm the world. No doubt, we will be talking about this question for a long time to come. 31. What can we learn about cloning? A. Cloned animals first appeared in 2018. B. Cloned plants are mainly used for medical research. C. Cloning technology can be used in the study of new plant species. D. Cloning plants is more complicated and difficult than cloning animals. 32. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3? A. Future uses of cloning. B. Scientific researches of cloning. C. The products provided by cloning. D. The medical treatments brought about by cloning, 33. What does the underlined word “moral” in Paragraph 4 refer to? A. Physical health. B. Technical development. C. Principle and belief. D. Knowledge and experience. 34. What’s the author’s attitude towards cloning? A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Disapproving. D. Unconcerned. C 32. A 33. C 34. 根据第二段中“Second, it is valuable for research on new plant species and for medical research on animals.( 其次,它对植物新物种的研究和动物医学研究都很有价值。)” 根据第三段“With the advances of scientific research, cloning will have several major uses, in the future. For one thing, it could be used to breed animal species which are endangered, or even bring back species which are now extinct. For another, it could be used to grow human organs or tissue in animals, which could be used for human organ transplants or medical treatments. Finally, cloning could be used to breed animals that will provide us with higher quality meat, milk, or eggs.( 随着科学研究的进步,克隆将有几个主要用途,在未来。 故选A项。 根据第四段中“For example, if scientists brought an extinct animal back into existence, it would probably end up fiving in a zoo. That is not very good for the animal. Even worse for the animal is using it as a source of organ transplants—because it will be injured or even die. In addition, many people worry that eating animal products that result from cloning might be harmful to our health over time. The possibility of using cloning to produce human beings is an even bigger concern. What would happen if such knowledge ended up in the wrong hands?( 例如,如果科学家让一种灭绝的动物复活,它可能最终会生活在动物园里。 根据文章大意以及最后一段“When it comes to cloning, we wonder, ultimately, whether cloning will help or harm the world. No doubt, we will be talking about this question for a long time to come.( 当谈到克隆,我们想知道,最终,克隆是否会帮助或伤害世界。 Whether you were once much more physically active or have never been a regular exerciser, now is a great time to start. She graduated at the top of her class and believed she would have no problem getting a job. However, having had ten interviews and no job offers, she was starting to wonder what was wrong. “At first I was confused. I’m intelligent and diligent, but why couldn’t I get a job?” Despite having “academic” intelligence, Jesse was missing the intelligence that many employers are now looking for — emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand your own emotions and the emotions of people around you. It can have a surprisingly powerful effect on your life. More and more companies use EI assessment tests to recruit new staff. They have come to know that people with high EI form better relationships with their colleagues and can manage themselves better. This benefits the company, in the form of higher productivity and profit. Jesse thinks that she spent so much of her college life studying alone that her social skills did not develop well. Determined to get straight As, she had not played any team sports or participated in any school groups, both of which would have helped develop social skills and emotional intelligence. Although she could motivate herself to accomplish a goal, she did not know how to work with others, a key to success in most commercial businesses. Although Jesse might not have a high EI now, psychologists believe she can improve it. Jesse says, “I need to identify people who are ‘natural’ leaders, who work well with others and are great motivators. I should watch what they say and how they act in different situations. Then go out, socialize, and try it out in my own life.” 40. Why was Jesse confused at first? _________________________________________________________________________________ 41. What is emotional intelligence? _________________________________________________________________________________ 42. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. More and more companies use EI assessment tests to recruit new staff, because they have found that people with high EI could motivate themselves to accomplish higher goals. _________________________________________________________________________________ 43. How can you improve your emotional intelligence? (In about 40 words) _________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】40. Jesse was confused because despite having high academic intelligence and graduating at the top of her class, she was unable to secure a job. 41. Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand your own emotions and the emotions of people around you. 42. The false part is: “because they have found that people with high EI could motivate themselves to accomplish higher goals.” Explanation: The text states that companies use EI assessment tests to recruit new staff because people with high EI can form better relationships with their colleagues and manage themselves better, which benefits the company in terms of higher productivity and profit. It does not mention that high EI directly motivates individuals to accomplish higher goals, but rather it implies that the social and self-management skills associated with high EI are beneficial in a work environment. 43. To improve emotional intelligence, one can observe natural leaders and how they interact with others, practice socializing in different situations, and develop better understanding of emotions through active participation in group activities and teamwork. 根据第一段的句子“She graduated at the top of her class and believed she would have no problem getting a job. D. Junyan’s mother helped her to develop an interest in humans and nature. 25. Why did Junyan choose to be a journalist? A. To become a famous person on TV. B. To learn many different skills and new things. C. To meet more people and go to many different places. D. To make people aware of what is going on around them. 26. What did Junyan think of inspecting the illegal business? A. Scary but exciting. B. Difficult but meaningful. C. Simple but innovative. D. Dangerous but well-paid. 27. What does the author intend to tell us? A. Curiosity can make a difference in a person’s life. B. Accepting what you have makes you happy. C. Ups and downs can make one strong. D. Chance favors the prepared mind. C Humans have names, of course, and dogs and cats may react when their names are called. D When it was announced in 2018 that the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai had created the world’s first cloned monkeys, Zhongzhong and Huahua, heated discussions followed online.
