In our daily lives, we often follow the same routines (日常作息): getting up, going to school or work, eating, and going to bed. Sounds familiar? But what if something unusual or unexpected happens? That’s what I experienced one evening in April 2024 on my way home from work.
As I was riding my bike home in the evening, I saw a big dirty dog with orange and white fur. It looked sad and lost, simply sitting in the middle of the road by a pedestrian crossing It seemed unsure of what to do as it lay down and stared at the passing traffic. Nobody seemed to mind the dog either, only passing him by at a distance.
At first, I also crossed over to the other side, hoping that somebody else would care for the dog. But, realizing that the dog might suddenly get up and walk into traffic, I decided I must do something to help the dog.
★ , I saw my opportunity. I used my bike to guide the dog to a street corner, blocking the way to keep it safe from passing cars. Slowly but surely, I was able to encourage the dog to keep walking until finally, we both made it to the sidewalk. I messaged a dog shelter (收容所) group to let them know about the dog’s whereabouts. Yet, by the time I turned to it again, the dog was gone.
Sometimes we don’t know what we will find or see in our daily lives. Still, what matters is how we react to them. Despite (尽管) how shy I normally am in these situations, I am glad I found the courage to help a dog in need, even if just for a moment.

14.Which sentence of the following can be put into ★ ?
A.To stop the cars behind B.When the light changed

15.What does the writer want to tell us with his experience?

Scientists at Stanford University have found a way to make the skin (皮肤) of living mice turn clear by rubbing (擦) a common yellow food dye (染料) called tartrazine (柠檬黄) on the mouse’s skin. The discovery could one day help doctors see inside human bodies without cutting them open.
The scientists mixed tartrazine with water to make the liquid. When they tested this mixture on very thin slices of chicken, the chicken began to turn clear. Next, the researchers decided to try the coloring on the skin of living mice. First they got the hair out of the way. Then, they rubbed the liquid on the skin of the mice. In just a few minutes, the skin of the mice became see-through. Using the liquid, the scientists were able to see inside a mouse’s brain. When the liquid was washed off, the skin returned to normal.
To understand how the new discovery works, it’s helpful to think about how light travels through different materials. Light travels in a straight line, unless it runs into something. Then, it usually bends (弯曲). Glass is easy to see through because light only takes a slight bend when it goes through the glass. But skin isn’t like glass. Skin is made of many different parts, like water, fat and so on. These different materials make it hard to see through skin. Tartrazine makes the watery parts of the skin more like the other areas. When the light mostly bends the same way, the skin becomes see-through.
Guosong Hong, one of the leaders of the research, says that if something similar could be made to work on humans, it could lead to exciting medical development. The scientists say more work needs to be done before a similar method can be used on humans. The dye only works on thin skin, and human skin is much thicker than the skin of mice.
16.What did the scientists find at Stanford University?
A.A way to treat skin problems. B.A way to make the mice grow quickly.
C.A way to help doctors cut human bodies open. D.A way to make the skin of living mice become clear.
17.How was the result of the test according to paragraph 2?
A.Unexpected. B.Meaningless. C.Incorrect. D.Successful.
18.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.How light travels through glass. B.The importance of tartrazine.
C.How tartrazine makes the skin see-through. D.The difference between skin and glass.
19.What is the value of the research at Stanford University?
A.It’s only useful for animal skin studies. B.It could improve medical study.
C.It helps understand light and materials better. D.It provides a way to make glass bend.
20.In which part of the newspaper can you find the text?
A.Science. B.Sport. C.Culture. D.History.

The Taklimakan Desert (塔克拉玛干沙漠), which is in the northwest part of China, is the biggest desert in our country. It has been a big worry because it’s really large, about 337,600 square kilometers and there are a lot of sandstorms that come from it. These sandstorms are very bad for the nature and the way people live around it. So, people started a big project to put a green belt (带) around the desert.
By the end of 2023, a large part of a 2,761-kilometer-long green belt had already been made around the desert. In 2024, the last 285 kilometers, mostly in the south of the desert where the sandstorms are super bad, were finished. Now the whole Taklimakan Desert has a green belt all around it. This Project has to do with six counties (县) in three parts of Xinjiang.
The building of this green belt used many different scientific ways. For example, the China Railway Construction Development Group (中铁建发展集团) made a system to stop the sand. This system has three main things. There are tall things to stop the sand, squares made of straw (草方格) and wide lines of trees. These things work together well to stop the desert from getting bigger.
When the green belt around the desert was successfully finished, it brought a lot of good things. First, it made the nature around the desert better. There are fewer and not as strong sandstorms now. Second, it kept the farming near the desert safe. So, farmers can grow food more easily. Also, the places where people live in cities and in the countryside are nicer. Because there are fewer sandstorms, there is less harm to the things like roads and buildings, and more people come to visit. So, the local people can make more money from having visitors. This project shows how much China wants to stop the desert from getting worse and make the nature better.
21.Where does the Taklimakan Desert lie in China?
A.Southwest. B.Northwest. C.Southeast. D.Northeast.
22.What is the total length of the green belt around the Taklimakan Desert in 2024?
A.2,761 kilometers. B.285 kilometers. C.3,046 kilometers. D.337,600 kilometers.
23.What does the underlined phrase “These things” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The six counties. B.The sandstorms.
C.The visitors. D.Ingredients of the sand-stopping system.
24.What is the right order of the following events?
① The green belt project around the Taklimakan Desert was started.
②A large part of the green belt was constructed by the end of 2023.
③ The final part of the green belt was finished in 2024.
④ Sandstorms from the Taklimakan Desert caused various problems.
A.④①②③ B.①④②③ C.④②①③ D.①②③④
25.What could be the best title of the text?
A.The History of the Taklimakan Desert
B.The Different Types of Deserts in China

26 James went to see him and said, “I always have business worries, family troubles and health problems. Please tell me how to make them disappear.” The old man smiled and said, “I’ll give you an answer tomorrow morning. 27 ” James answered, “sure, I can.” The old man asked him to take care of the 100 camels (骆驼) for the night, making sure that they all sat down and rested before James could go to sleep.
28 James answered sadly, “I didn’t sleep at all. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get all the camels to sit together. Even if I managed to get some camels to sit on one side, a few others would stand on the other side.”
“That’s true. Some camels sat down quietly. 29 If you came back later, you would see some of the camels finally sit down, even though they didn’t sit at first,” the old man said. “Problems are just like camels — some problems get solved by themselves, some get solved after your effort, and some don’t get solved even after you have tried your best. Leave such problems to time. 30 ”

根据后文“who was also an artist like them”可知,他们的职业是艺术家,故选A。
money钱;time时间;laughter笑声;medicine药。
up向上;out of从……
故选A。
first第一;next下一个;last最后的;second第二。
but但是;although虽然;because因为;if如果。根据空前的“life is hard”和空后的“I shouldn’t give up”可知两句之间是转折关系,所以选“but”符合语境。故选A。

Problems and Advice on Smart Phones
Nowadays, smart phones make life and learning easier. However, they also bring problems to teenagers. First, looking at the screen for a long time can make our eyes tired and hurt our eyesight. Second, some students spend too much time playing games or watching videos, and they have less time to study or do other useful things.
To solve these problems, we can make some rules. For example, we can only use smart phones for one hour a day. We should also do more outdoor activities, like playing sports or going for a walk. It’s also a good idea to talk to our parents or teachers if we have trouble controlling ourselves.
If we make good use of smart phones, they can be helpful to us.
