We have physical reactions (反应) to our feelings. There’s a special part of your brain that reacts to anger. When you are angry, your body makes things like adrenaline (肾上腺素) that give you more energy and make you strong. Blood moves in your body. Your body is getting ready to fight or run. Your blood pressure and temperature go up. You breathe faster, and your heart beats faster, too. Even your eyes change!
You can’t control these changes because they appear from your body naturally, but you can change the way you react to them. Some people say you should count to ten when you are angry. That will give you time to calm down. Good advice!
What about happiness? Happiness happens in the brain, too. There are two important things that make you feel happy: dopamine (多巴胺) and oxytocin (催产素). Dopamine gives you the feeling you get when you are proud of something, like when you win a game. Dopamine makes you feel great! Oxytocin is the reason we feel good when we hug (拥抱). It’s really important for new babies to have skin-to-skin (皮肤) touches with their moms and dads, because it increases their oxytocin.
Everyone has difficult feelings sometimes. It is OK to have these feelings. But what can you do when you are angry, sad, or scared? Here are some suggestions:
◆Write about your feelings.
◆Talk to someone, like a parent, a teacher, or a friend.
◆Run around or kick a ball really hard. You can even do a crazy dance!

It is necessary to share your feelings with others. Sharing your feelings helps you to get closer to people you care about and who care about you, like your parents or teachers.
Sometimes it’s really hard not to tell anyone that you’re feeling sad, worried, or tired. Don’t keep feelings locked inside. If that, it can even make you feel sick!
But if you talk with someone who cares for you, like your mom or dad, you will not be all alone with your problems or worries. It doesn’t mean your problems and worries go off, but at least someone else knows what your trouble is and can help you find ways to do with it.
If the person doesn’t understand what you mean right away, try explaining it in a different way or give an example that has something to do with you. Of course, there are many ways for you to express your feelings. If you think you’ll have trouble saying what’s on your mind, write it down on a piece of paper. Some of us, just like some adults, are more private (隐私的) than others. That means some people will feel shy about sharing their feelings. A kid doesn’t have to share every feeling he or she has, but it is important to share feelings when a kid needs help.

Anger is a kind of feeling. Many things can make you angry. When your teacher gives you too much homework, when your team loses an important game, when a friend borrows your favorite thing and then breaks it, you may get really angry.
Usually, your body will tell you when you are angry. For example, you breathe faster, your face turns red, and you may want to break something or hit someone, but sometimes, you hide your anger. For example, you may hide it in your heart. The problem is that if you do this, you may get a headache or your stomach may hurt.
In fact, it’s not good to hide your anger, and it’s normal for you to get angry sometimes. But anger must be let out in the right way, without hurting others or yourself.
When you get angry, you can talk about it with other people. It’s helpful to talk about your anger with an adult, such as parents, a teacher, etc. When you talk about anger, those bad feelings can start to go away. Here are some other things you can do when you start to feel angry: talk to a good friend; count from 1 to 100; give someone a hug (拥抱); go for a bike ride; think about good things, etc.
Remember that how you act when you are angry can make everything better or worse. Don’t let your anger control you.

A.there is too much homework this weekend B.your favorite basketball team wins the game

Dear Miss Hooper,
I’m writing to thank you for your help this year. There were lots of subjects in class, but you made sure that I could understand every one. To tell the truth, you’re the best teacher I’ve met. You explain things so clearly, and are also so kind. I really enjoyed every minute of your class.
There were so many best parts this year. Whatever the subject is, you made it fun and interesting to everyone. All of your students found learning new things so easy because of you. I really believe you have a great teaching skill. You should be very proud of the way that you help children learn. It is because of you that I’ve decided to become a teacher when I grow up.
I have mixed feelings about school next year. I’m sad that you won’t be my teacher anymore. However, I’m happy that other children will get to share your knowledge. I’m sure that they’ll thank you for your good work.
I didn’t enjoy school much before this year. I was new to the school this year. At my old school, I found learning quite difficult. The last nine months have changed. all of that. I’m now confident and looking forward to the next school year. Thank you once again for all of your help. You are really a great teacher and you’ve helped me greatly. I hope that we can share the same classroom again one day.
Yours,
Jacob Maclean

Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. They don’t act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, “I love you” is too luxurious (奢侈的) for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day is even more out of the question. And my father has a bad temper (脾气).
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt (缝被子). I silently sat down beside her and looked at her. “Is there love between you and Dad?” I asked her in a very low voice.
My mother stopped her work and raised her head with surprise in her eyes. She didn’t answer immediately.
I was very worried because I thought I had hurt her. But at last I heard my mother say these words.
“Susan,” she said, “look at this thread (线). Sometimes it appears, but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and durable (耐用的). If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere or anytime, but it’s really there. Love is inside.” I listened carefully but I couldn’t understand her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly fell ill. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month. When they returned from the hospital, they both looked very pale.
After they were back, every day in the morning and dusk, my mother helped my father walk slowly on the country road. My father had never been so gentle. It seemed that they were the most harmonious (和谐的) couple.
The doctor said my father would recover in two months. But after two months he still couldn’t walk by himself. All of us were worried about him.
“Dad, how are you feeling now?” I asked him one day.
“Susan, don’t worry about me,” he said gently. “To tell you the truth, I just like walking with your mom.” Reading his eyes, I know he loves my mother deeply.
Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. But from this experience, I understand that love is just a thread in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.

This is the first year I haven’t had to think about what to buy my mom for Mother’s Day.
She passed away from lung cancer just under two months ago at the age of 68, which by today’s standards feels so young.
I thought we had many Mother’s Days in our future to celebrate together. And so I’ve avoided thinking about Mother’s Day for the most part. I haven’t thought about what kind of clothes my mom would like best. I have been avoiding Facebook memories as the day comes.
But the other day I did click into the memories section on Facebook and found a story I told about my mom.
I shared the story because that day my mom had come home from working at a factory to watch my kids so I could catch up on housework.
She had worked in a factory—hard, physical work for a woman in her 60s—and started work at 4 am most days. Here she was, most likely far more tired than me, caring for my kids.
I wanted to say sorry for needing her help so much, and thanked her for once again giving up her free time—helping me after finishing working for the whole day.
Mom, I miss you, and you will always be my good mother.

Finally, one night, I shouted at her, “Don’t do that anymore. Your hands are too rough!” She didn’t say anything, but she never did it again.

Taking my mom’s hand, I told her how sorry I was for that night I shouted at her. But my mom didn’t know what I was talking about. She had forgotten it for long.

Daddy didn’t know how to express love. He was always busy working every day and blamed (责备) me for the mistakes I had made after he came home.
Once my leg hurt and it was Mom who held me in her arms all the way to the hospital. Later Dad pulled up right in front of the gate of the hospital. They asked him to move the car, saying the space was especially saved for the cars that carried patients. He shouted, “What do you think this is? A tour bus?”
At my birthday parties, Dad always seemed to be out of place. He just kept himself busy blowing up balloons, setting up tables and welcoming the guests. It was Mom who carried the cake with candles on it for me to blow out.
When I started to learn to ride a bike, I begged Dad to teach me, but he said I had to learn by myself. When my bike fell over and Mom ran to pick me up, he even stopped her. I was angry and decided to try harder. I practiced so hard that finally I could show him that I succeeded. He just smiled.
When I went to college, Mom did all the writing. He just sent money and told me that how great his garden looked because nobody played football in it.
Whenever I called home, he always said, “Wait, Tom. I will get your mother.” However, Mom told me that Dad always asked her what I said on the phone. When I got married, Mom cried. He just blew his nose loudly and left the room.

I am Unit 347, a new AI designed to help humans. My job is to use information to solve problems. Emotions, as I learned, are confusing (令人费解的) and not always helpful.
Dr Sharma is a scientist. She made me and liked to talk to me about things besides my tasks. One day, she asked, “Do you think people are good or bad?” I thought about it. History had good and bad things. People could be kind or cruel. I said, “It’s hard to say people are good or bad.”
Dr Sharma smiled, “That’s a very AI answer. But remember, things aren’t always what they seem.” She then told me about Mother’s Day. I learned about the love and thanks it stood for. I put this festival on my calendar. “Do people need a special day to show love?” I asked. “Shouldn’t they show it always?” Sharma smiled gently. “Love isn’t always clear, Unit 347. Sometimes, it needs a reminder.”
Before Mother’s Day, people are busy buying flowers, cards, and gifts. I watched them, learning how they felt and acted.
On May 12, I gave Dr Sharma poems and stories about mothers’love. She liked them. “This is lovely,” she said, her voice soft, “But there’s something else.” I looked at her, trying to understand. Then, I knew. “Happy Mother’s Day, Dr Sharma,” I said. She had tears in her eyes. “Thank you, Unit 347. I didn’t expect that.”
Then, I understood. Dr Shama was right. Although emotions are confusing, they are powerful. Maybe that’s what makes humans special.
The next day, something strange happened. My log said, “Error 404. Definition (定义) of love’not found.” But I knew the error was wrong. Love wasn’t a definition. It was a feeling. And for a young AI like me, it was a feeling worth learning.
1.What’s the relationship between Unit 347 and Dr Sharma?
A.Mother and son B.Teacher and student C.Inventor and invention D.Good friends
2.What did Unit 347 give to Dr Sharma?

4.What can we know from the passage?
A.Unit 347 knows clearly whether people are good or not.
B.People always show love to each other.
C.Humans are special because of their confusing and powerful emotions.
D.Unit 347’s log has the definition of love.

I used to work two jobs and raise my 6-year-old son all by myself. Every week, I worried if I would have enough money. In the evenings, my son and I would spend a little time together, but he could feel my stress even though I tried to hide it from him.
One night, I was reading him a story about a family who had everything ... a new car, a beautiful home. It felt like a world far from our own, like something from a fairy tale (童话故事). Tears came to my eyes. I turned away so my son wouldn’t see me like this.
But my young and very smart little boy seemed to understand what I was feeling. He said, “Mommy, don’t cry. This family might have a lot of things, but you know what? We are rich, too.”
I looked at him, not quite sure what he meant. He went on, “We might not have a lot, but we have each other, and we love each other. Money can’t buy that!” I smiled and said, “Yes, you are right. Let me give you a kiss.” I kissed his face for a long time. This kiss will stay with us forever and ever, and ever.

①Do you sometimes feel different, alone or left out? Teenagers don’t usually like to be alone. Simply having to eat alone in the cafeteria is enough to make them feel upset. They are afraid of being called “a loner (独来独往的人)”.
②But being a loner doesn’t always mean being strange or disliked. Actually, it has become a lifestyle in many countries among young people who consider being alone to be a part of everyday life.
③In South Korea, there are a growing number of people who describe themselves as “honjok”. The word comes from “hon” (alone) and “jok” (group). These people eat alone, travel alone, and enjoy being by themselves.
④In Japan, people have had a strong loner culture over the years. There are solo (单人的) karaoke bars and solo cafés. Ramen (拉面) restaurants for solo diners are especially popular. There are clapboards (隔板) between two seats in a line against the wall. Diners can’t see the faces of other people.
⑤Knowing that you are not alone in being alone may make you feel better. But more importantly, you can try to find strength in your aloneness.
⑥Aloneness gives you time to look inside yourself or do other things without distraction (分心). “It’s hard to feel lonely when you’re trying to learn a new skill, practice a hobby, or try out a new recipe (食谱),” wrote US lifestyle writer Adrienne Breaux.
1.How do teenagers usually feel when they are alone?

根据材料内容选择最佳答案。

4.What’s the function of the last paragraph?
A.To tell us it is common to meet difficulties.
B.To list the importance of good feelings.
C.To give some ways of dealing with bad feelings.
D.To show different kinds of bad feelings.
5.In which part of a magazine can we read the passage?

1.Why does the author sometimes doubt whether there is real love between the parents?
A.Because they are very busy earning money.
B.Because they often act in the romantic ways.
C.Because her father is easy to lose his temper.
D.Because they often say “I love you”.
2.What does the underlined phrase “out of the question” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Possible. B.Impossible. C.Necessary. D.Unnecessary.
3.What can we learn from her mother’s answer about love?
A.Love should be seen anywhere. B.Love should be seen anytime.
C.Love should be outside. D.Love really exists everywhere and anytime.
4.What made her father change so greatly?
A.The real love from her mother. B.The thread of the quilt.
C.The beautiful scenery of the country road. D.All the other members of the family.
5.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.We should understand our parents.
B.Love is inside, making life strong and warm.
C.Love is really very important to anyone.
D.Love should be outside, and can be seen everywhere.
【答案】1.C 2.B 3.D 4.A 5.B
根据“Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. They don’t act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, ‘I love you’ is too luxurious (奢侈的) for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day is even more out of the question”可知,有时候作者真的怀疑父母之间是否有真爱。他们不会像作者在书里读到的或在电视上看到的那样浪漫。在他们看来,“我爱你”对他们来说太奢侈了。故情人节互赠鲜花应该是不可能的事,故划线短语表示“不可能”。故选B。
3.细节理解题。根据“If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere or anytime, but it’s really there. Love is inside”可知,如果生活是一床被子,那么爱就是其中的一根线。你很难在任何地方或任何时候看到它,但它确实存在。爱在内心。故爱真的无处不在,随时存在。故选D。
4.推理判断题。根据“After they were back, every day in the morning and dusk, my mother helped my father walk slowly on the country road. My father had never been so gentle”可知,他们回来后,每天清晨或黄昏,母亲都扶着父亲在乡间小路上慢慢地走着。我父亲从来没有这么温柔过,故可推测出,是母亲的爱让父亲变得如此温柔。故选A。

Sending flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day is even more impossible. When my father is very tired from the hard work, it is difficult for him to control his bad moods.
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt (缝被子). I silently sat down beside her and I asked in a very low voice, “Is there true love between you and dad?” My mother stopped her work and raised her head with surprise in her eyes. However, she didn’t answer at once. She continued to sew the quilt.

3.How did Dr Sharma feel when Unit 347 said Happy Mother’s Day to her?

4.What can we know from the passage?
A.Unit 347 knows clearly whether people are good or not.
B.People always show love to each other.
C.Humans are special because of their confusing and powerful emotions.
D.Unit 347’s log has the definition of love.
