But people do it differently in different places. In America, people hold out their hand with the palm (手掌) up and move their finger back and forth (往外) . But in China, don’t do that! They will be angry because people do it to ask animals to come over. They call people with their palm down. Even the same gesture can mean different things in different places. In America, when people make a“V”shape with two fingers, it means “winning”. But in England, if you show the back of your hand when making a“V”, it’s not nice! People might get angry. These things may give you too much stress which is bad for your development. So, how can we students deal with them? As a student, schoolwork and grades are at the top of your stress list. You have a lot of schoolwork to do every day. Although your grades are not terrible, you may still worry that you are not as good as you expect. Why not make a daily or weekly plan for schoolwork? In this way, you can save more time to study and even avoid being too tired by taking some breaks. Don’t be too strict with yourself. Just do what you can do. If you meet something beyond your ability, just go to your teacher for help—pick his or her brain or make any questions you don’t understand clear. Have you ever been worried about not having enough friends in school or not being in the same class with your best friends? Not getting along well with new classmates is also our common stress. It is important to choose your circle of friends. Don’t hide yourself in your own world and try to make friends when you join in after-school activities. Make plans to meet your friends from other classes during break time. Know that everyone is different—do not compare yourself with others. You’ll be less stressed that way. Unhealthy eating habits and lack (缺乏) of sleep can also lead to stress. You are what you eat. Make healthy food choices that you can enjoy. Set a certain time to go to bed every night. Don’t play computer games before you sleep. Do see a doctor if your sleeping problem continues. The more successfully you deal with (处理) your stress, the better you will feel about yourself. A.Too much stress of students. B.Making friends with the new classmates. C.Poor eating habits and lack of sleep. D.How to deal with stress. 5.Who is the text written for? As for it, everyone is different. I’ll share some of my experience. I once took a school year English course in Wuhan University, but I mostly learned English on my own. One thing I can tell you is that, once you’ve started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see something when you’re riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about “How would I say them in English?” At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I’m in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It’s amazing how much this helps. For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I didn’t want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over. And while traveling in America, I’d try to hang out with friends who couldn’t speak Chinese, so that I’d have no choice but to speak English. And I also decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that, my English started improving much more quickly. Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you’re writing, and give you some suggestions for improvement. 1.The writer learned English in Wuhan University for about_________. A.a week B.a month C.a term D.a year 2.According to the writer, _________is a good way to improve your English. A.thinking in English B.learning English grammar C.watching English films D.reading English book 3.The underlined phrase “got it over” in Paragraph 3 means “_________”in English. A.stick to it B.depend on it C.overcome it D.understand it 4.To the writer’s surprise, his English improved quickly_________. A.in the university B.in the middle school C.in China D.in America 5.The best title for this passage should be_________. According to a new study in the online PloS One (《公共科学图书馆·综合》), people make their decisions to trust others largely based on their faces. Your appearance can do a lot for you, especially if you are in the financial industry (金融业). The more trustworthy (可靠的) you look, the more likely people will buy what you’re selling. Researchers from Britain’s University of Warwick Business School, University College London, and Dartmouth College, US, did a number of experiments. The research team used computer software to make 40 faces, from the least to the most trustworthy-looking. The study said that the difference between a trustworthy face and one that isn’t as trustworthy comes from features that look slightly (轻微地) angry or slightly happy, even when the face is at rest. However, a slightly happy face is more likely to be trusted. Researchers gave participants (参与者) some money and asked them which face they trusted to invest the money for them. Then researchers gave some good and bad information about the people with these faces, and asked the participants again whom they trusted. The results showed that even if they got different information, the participants didn’t change their choices. They were still more likely to invest their money with the more trustworthy-looking faces. Chris Olivola, one of the study’s authors, said in the University of Warwick’s press release: “It seems we are still willing to go with our own instincts (本能) about whether we think someone looks like we can trust them. The temptation (诱惑) to judge strangers by their faces is hard to resist (抵抗).” 1.What does the underlined phrase “based on” mean? What is the first thing you see? It is your face. The human face doesn’t just show our emotions (情绪). It can do much more. Here are some fun science facts and secrets about the human face. You have big eyes and a small nose. While your friend has small eyes and a big nose. What makes you and your friend look different? The answer is genes (基因). Scientists found 15 genes deciding (决定) some of our facial features (面部特征). Some of these genes can be passed down from parents to children. That’s why we often hear people say, “You are just a clone (克隆) of your mom, or of your dad.” But what facial features did you get from your mom? And what parts came from your dad? No two faces are the same Eyes If both of your parents have double eyelids (双眼皮), you can have double eyelids or single eyelids (单眼皮). If both of your parents have single eyelids, you usually have single eyelids. Chin If one of your parents has a big chin (下巴), usually you have a big chin. Nose The tip of the nose is the most “handed down” part. If one of your parents has a big nose, you are likely to have the same nose shape. Skin color One parent has a light skin color. The other parent has a dark skin color. Most of the time, you have a skin color in between. Even twins don’t look the same. Their looks are just very similar (相似的). They can have some small differences. 1.________ make(s) everyone look different. A.Mirror B.Emotions C.Genes D.Environment 2.Why do we look like our parents? A.Because genes deciding some of our facial features can be passed down from parents to children. B.Because we have been living with parents for a long time. C.Because there is no gene passed down from parents to children. D.Because some genes can be passed down from children to parents. 3.If both of your parents have single eyelids, you usually have________. A.big eyes B.double eyelids C.small eyes D.single eyelids 4.If you have a big chin, it means that________. A.both your parents have big chins. B.at least one of your parents has a big chin. C.both your parents have small chins. D.your sister has a small chin. 5.If one of your parents has a big nose, you are likely to have a________. A.big nose B.small nose C.big mouth D.small chin Do you think we only talk with words? No, we also use body language and gestures (手势)! Some gestures are common. This means that people from any culture can understand them. For example, pointing at something means“that one”or“that person”. This may not always be polite, but everyone can understand it. Another easy gesture is“come here”. And shaking your head can mean different things too. In many countries, if you shake your head from side to side, it means“no”. But in Saudi Arabia (沙特阿拉伯), this means“yes”. Isn’t that interesting? 1.What does the underlined word“common”mean in Paragraph 1? A.通用的. B.难懂的. C.奇怪的. D.特别的. 2.People call others to come over with their palm down in ________. People often ask me for suggestions about how to learn English.
