It was the cleaning day for the family. John and his mom were busy cleaning the house. They cleaned upstairs, downstairs, inside and outside until everything was clean. Then, John’s mom noticed an old chair. That worn chair was for John’s grandpa.
“John, come and help me.” John’s mom said. “We’ll take the chair to the curb (路边). The garbage truck is picking up on our block tomorrow.”
As they tried to move the chair, John’s grandpa saw what was happening. “No!” He cried. “You can’t take my chair.” “But it’s so old…” John’s mom argued. “We’ll buy you a new one.”
“No,” he insisted, trying to push his chair back into place.
John’s mom finally let go of the chair and left the room. Slowly, the old man sat into his chair and closed his eyes.
“Grandpa, why won’t you let us throw away the chair?” John asked.
“You don’t understand, John.” His grandpa shook his head and said, “I sat in this chair with your grandma right here when I asked her to marry me. And I sat in this chair the night your father was born. Many years later,” stopped for a while, Grandpa continued, “I sat in this chair when the doctor called and told me that your grandma was ill. I was lost without her, but the chair gave me comfort and warmth.” The old man’s voice changed as he recalled that fateful day.
“I understand now.” John looked at his grandpa and said, “this is not just an old chair. It is more like a friend.”
“Yes,” he nodded. “We’ve gone through a lot together.”
However, that night, when John and his grandpa were asleep, John’s parents carried the chair outside. It was a starless night. Snow fell silently from the black sky and covered grandpa’s chair in a blanket of white.
The next morning, John was woken by the garbage truck pulling up to the house. He run downstairs and found the snow-covered chair stood helplessly at the curb, about to be pulled away. “Wait! Stop!” John yelled and rushed outside. The large noises were suddenly stopped. He then ran back inside and cried, “Mom, you can’t throw out grandpa’s chair. It is like a loyal friend that has witnessed the most important moments in his life!”
Hearing this, John’s mom looked at grandpa and slowly walked towards him, “I’m sorry…I just didn’t realize how much it meant to you.” Together they carefully moved away the snow on the chair, heaved it back inside and placed it next to the fireplace to dry. Did you know that vocabulary is more important than grammar? If you have good vocabulary, you can communicate successfully, even if the grammar is not completely perfect.
However, one common problem is learning new words and then forgetting them. So when you want to use a new word in a conversation, you can’t remember it at that moment. Does this often happen to you? The reason for this difficulty is that most students try to learn vocabulary by studying lists and dictionaries and remembering the words. But it may not work if you don’t have a very good memory.
The best way to learn vocabulary and remember the words successfully is to learn new words and use them at once. You can do this with a very simple exercise. Every time you learn a new word, for example, from an English lesson or an article, write it down in your vocabulary notebook. Writing is more active than just reading a definition.
You should write the word, the definition in English or translation, one example sentence from the article or dictionary and one example sentence that you create.
Imagine you just learn the word “generous”. Write in your vocabulary notebook: generous (adjective), definition—giving or willing to give freely. Example one, from the article: Thanks for paying for my dinner. You’re very generous. Example two, my example: My brother is generous because he volunteers at the animal shelter on weekends. It’s best if your example sentences are true to your life, because this creates a personal connection with the new word. The next day, read your vocabulary notebook again and try to add one more example sentence using the new word. It’s helpful for you to remember it. These two simple steps—writing the word and using it at once—help you remember and use new words.
Do you have a vocabulary notebook? If not, start now.
32.What’s the correct order of the following steps of taking vocabulary notes?
①Make your own example sentence.
②Write the word, its English definition or translation.
③Copy an example sentence from the article or dictionary.
④Read your notebook again and add one more example sentence.
A.②③①④ B.②③④① C.③④②① D.③②①④
33.How can we make the best example sentences according to the writer?
A.By asking for help from friends. B.By explaining words’ definitions.
C.By connecting them with our life D.By adding words from the article.
34.Which of the following statement is TRUE according to the passage?
A.You can communicate successfully if you are not good at grammar.
B.To learn and remember new words, it is important to use them at once.
C.Without a good memory, it is impossible for you to remember a new word.
D.Reading is more active than just writing a definition.

What comes to your mind when you read the word “robot”? Many people think about big and modern machines in car factories or films. Few of us think about the past. But people were building machines with human abilities hundreds of years ago.
Philo of Byzantium, an ancient Greek inventor, built a robot thousands of years ago. If someone placed a cup in the robot’s hand, it could mix water and wine to make a drink. But it wasn’t popular because people didn’t need robots to work at that time.
Another ancient robot was a robotic arm called “The Claw”. Polybius, the Greek writer, wrote about it in 213 BC. It was built during a war with the Romans and hung over the city wall towards the sea. When a Roman ship came close, the arm caught the front of it and lifted the ship into the air. Then the ship fell backward into the sea and went down. Again, we don’t know whether the machine was built, but it was possible with Ancient Greek technology.
Leonardo da Vinci, the famous artist, loved designing robots. Few of his designs were built, but his plans were very perfect. Mark Rosheim, a robot engineer, still learns from those ideas when he works! One of Leonardo da Vinci’s robots was a lion. He built it in 1515. It could walk and send flowers! In 2009, engineers used the plans to rebuild the robot lion. It worked perfectly.
As time went by, more robots were built, and they could do more difficult work, such as writing and drawing a picture. Although modern technology has moved on, these historical robots still surprise people today.

Spring is the season to harvest West Lake Longjing tea, which is now picked by not only human workers but also “metal workers”—tea-picking robots!
At the end of March, Hangzhou welcomed its best period of large-scale (大规模) harvesting of West Lake Longjing tea. In one tea garden, a smart tea-picking robot invented by Zhejiang Sci-tech University first appeared in public after five years of research and development.
With a pull and a suck (吸), the robotic arm separates the leaves from the trees and then puts them into a storage box quickly. “The robot learned its skills through a specially designed model that offers it a large amount of information of tea leaves,” said Chen Jianneng, one of the researchers. This allows the robot to recognize tea leaves by itself with a success rate (成功率) of over 90 percent, Chen added.
Yet, the robot’s picking system needs improving before it can be more widely used. According to Professor Wu Chuanyu, leader of the research team, the robot can only take on the work of 1.5 workers at present. It will need to do the work of 5 workers if it is used for a large-scale harvesting. In addition, the robot can now only be used on flat ground, not on rough (崎岖不平的) surfaces such as mountains. It may take five more years to realize these goals, Wu told China News.
Tea planting and processing are also changed to become “smarter”. For example, there are special lamps that can attract pests (害虫) but will not hurt other “friendly” insects. This machine works for 24 hours, using color board and lights to draw pests in day and night and then kill them with an electric grid (电网).
In terms of tea roasting (炒制), although machine-roasted tea is used widely, many tea lovers argue that this method will make the tea not have the same taste with the tea made by hand-roasting. Researchers at Zhejiang University are trying to find out the tiny differences between the two methods to improve machine performance. They’re researching AI technologies to help them gain necessary information and make adjustments (调整) to roasting methods and temperatures in time.

John’s mom stepped back, as if seeing the chair for the very first time. “Mm…I guess it does give the room a certain touch of character,” she murmured. Everybody laughed. Love does have magic, as they put it.

35.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Tips for Translating Words B.Advice on Using Grammar
C.Abilities of Creating Examples D.Ways of Learning New Words
