For decades, Xu Shuangmin had seldom explored beyond her community, limited within a comfortable 5-kilometer zone in the central city. But at the age of 67, and fresh off her retirement, she surprised everyone with a decision to travel 4,000 km northwest, starting a new chapter as a volunteer teacher.
In September 2021, Xu joined a national silver-age teacher action plan, a programme launched by the Ministry of Education to take advantage of the wealth of experience and knowledge of retired educators to promote the educational quality of universities in the western regions. Most of the retired teachers come from the economically developed large cities in the central and eastern regions. However, they were not afraid of Xinjiang’s dry climate, sandy weather and relatively modest living facilities.
Despite being a volunteer, the teachers work with great energy. Take 63-year-old Zhong Dakang, for instance. He works overtime and is frequently seen focusing all his attention on the computer in his office throughout the day. Due to his devotion, he often forgets to take his blood-pressure pills.
Chen Xiaohe, 70, is a retired teacher from a university in Shanghai. Having difficulty walking following a car accident, he still enjoys standing in front of a class. Chen even stayed on the Karamay campus during the winter and summer vacations, preparing lessons and teaching materials. He has extended his first one-year volunteering contract (合同) to three years. The praise he received from his students might be the reason behind his decision to extend his stay. The course he teaches has often been praised for its “clarity” and being “easy to comprehend”.
The term “Silver-haired Power” has emerged as one of China’s top 10 buzzwords this year. It means that the vitality of the elderly should not be held back by aging, as they deserve care and happiness, as well as opportunities to continue making contributions to society.
4. Why did Xu Shuangmin surprise everyone after retirement?
A. Because she moved northwest with her family.
B. Because she wrote a chapter on her community.
C. Because she explored around her comfortable zone.
D. Because she became a volunteer teacher far from home.
5. What is the purpose of the national silver-age teacher action plan?
A. To help retired educators adapt to the climate in Xinjiang.
B. To promote the construction of living facilities in Xinjiang.
C. To inspire more people to live in economically developed cities.
D. To improve the educational qualities of universities in the western areas.
6. What are the features of the course taught by Chen Xiaohe?
A. It is clear and easily understandable.
B. It is challenging and difficult to master.
C. It is full of humor and interesting examples.
D. It focuses on hands-on activities and practical skills.
7. What is a suitable title for this passage?
A. Retirement Choices: Staying at Home or Traveling Abroad.
B. Silver-haired educators: Pioneering Education Hope in the West.
C. Lifestyle Challenges: Retired Teachers’ Struggles in Remote Areas.
D. Western Universities: Appealing to Retired educators from Big Cities.

Australia has passed a law that aims to prevent people younger than 16 from using social media. The law is meant to protect young people, but some people say it could create more problems than it solves.
Under the new law, social media companies like Meta and TikTok must take “reasonable steps” to prevent anyone under 16 from creating an account. If the companies do not follow the law, they could be fined up to US $32 million. The law doesn’t affect all social media. YouTube is not included because it’s often used in schools.
Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, strongly supports the new law. He says it may not be perfect, but that it is needed to protect young people from the negative effects of social media. Most people in Australia seem to agree. Recent surveys show that 77% of people in Australia are in favor of the law. People are worried about how social media can hurt young people’s mental health. Many people have heard stories about young people who have been bullied (欺凌) online and later hurt themselves. But not everyone agrees that the new law is a good idea. Some people believe the law will make it harder for young people to connect with others who can support them. Others worry that the social media ban will push young people toward less safe parts of the Internet.
One of the biggest concerns is how the social media companies will figure out how old their users are. The law says the companies must give people a way to prove their age without sending in a government ID, but it’s not clear how this might work. The demand that the companies collect even more information raises worries about the privacy of young people.
Around the world, there are serious concerns about the effects of social media on young people. In 2023, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said that social media should come with a health warning. Other countries have also taken steps to limit social media use by young people. In France, people under 15 cannot use social media without permission from a parent. Countries like the UK and Norway are considering similar laws.
8. What will happen to social media companies if not following Australia’s new law?
A. They’ll be shut down. B. They’ll get a warning.
C. They may be fined. D. They have to apologize.
9. Why is YouTube not affected by Australia’s new social media law?
A. Because it needs no accounts.
B. Because it obeys the law strictly.
C. Because it is frequently used in schools.
D. Because it is superior to other platforms.
10. What can we learn about the new law from paragraph 3?
A. It is favored by the majority for its perfection.
B. It prevents young people being bullied online.
C. It makes the Internet a less safe place on social media.
D. It aims to protect the young from bad effects of social media.
11. What causes worries about the privacy of young people?
A. The uncertainty about the way of collecting users’ age.
B. The requirement of proving their age without a government ID.
C. Young people’s oversharing personal information on social media.
D. The social media companies’ collection of more data from the young.
D
In the chaos of any airport all over the globe, a familiar yet annoying sight often unfolds. Anyone who is waiting in line, patiently waiting for their zone to be called at an airport departure gate has likely seen a scene where someone attempts to slip forward and board the plane before their group has been called. It throws the whole boarding process into disorder and delays everyone else’s journey.
Last month, American Airlines became the first airline to test a new technology to help strictly punish passengers who attempt to cut the line. And now, ahead of the busiest travel day of the year, the Texas-based carrier is expanding its new technology.
The technology gives gate agents a hearable signal when someone scans their ticket and tries to board early, urging that passenger to step aside and wait for their correct group to be called. In this way, order is maintained and passengers can board smoothly. American is trying to roll out this system to more than 100 airports across the nation.
“We are in the early stage of testing new technology used during the boarding process, designed to make sure customers receive priority boarding with ease and help the boarding experience by providing greater visibility.” a representative of the airline told ABC News. Experts said that in addition to enforcing the rules and efficiency when boarding the plane, airlines like to reward their highest paying and frequent flyers with early boarding as an extra benefit, so they want to keep it exclusive.
The technology was first tested at three U. S. airports: Albuquerque International, Tucson International Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. An earlier version of this story was first published on Oct.23,2024 when the technology was first being tested.
12. What is the new technology tested by American Airlines for?
A. To speed up the boarding process.
B. To help passengers find their seats easily.
C. To stop passengers jumping the queue during boarding.
D. To offer comfortable waiting areas at the departure gate.
13. What does the technology do when someone tries to board early?
A. It refuses to scan the passenger’s ticket.
B. It automatically closes the boarding gate.
C. It sends a message to the passenger’s phone.
D. It offers a warning sound to the gate agents.
14. What do the underlined words “roll out” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Blame. B. Promote. C. Praise. D. Analyze.
15. What kind of passengers can board early?
A. Passengers bringing plenty of luggage.
B. Passengers obeying the boarding rules strictly.
C. Passengers making the boarding process smoothly.
D. Passengers paying the highest fares and flying frequently.

What can be done to control anger and prevent it from ruining our lives? Here are four ways that you can deal with the causes of anger.
Firstly, you need to change your attitude to the way the world works. You have to accept that sometimes things do go wrong and that people are not always lovely. ____17____ Also, you need to accept that not everyone has the same standards as you, nor will they behave in the same way that you would in a given situation.
Secondly, don’t dismiss anger as a bad emotion. There are occasions when anger can be directed in such a way as to achieve great things. Martin Luther King was angry about the lack of civil rights in the USA. Gandhi was angry about British domination in India. ____18____
Thirdly, reacting angrily is a hard habit to break. But it is a habit, and habits can be broken. The trick is to avoid reacting when faced with a situation that usually causes anger. Anger is a negative reaction. You need to learn not to respond at all. ____19____
Fourthly, don’t take the easy way when you get angry. We all get tempted to throw something, hit something (or even someone), or scream when we are angry. ____20____ However, if you are to stop anger from becoming your master, you must learn control over your anger. In this way, anger will no longer prevent you from achieving a fulfilling life.

B. You will regret rude language spoken without thought.
C. Realizing that no one is perfect is a good start to avoiding getting angry.
D. Your anger will not get the emotional food it needs to survive in this way.

On a warm summer day, Alex and his best friend, Leo, decided to explore the suburbs of their small town. Armed with nothing but a backpack filled with snacks, water bottles, and a flashlight, they set off on their bikes.
As they cycled down a narrow dirt path, they noticed a small, barely noticeable opening hidden behind a thick group of bushes. Out of curiosity, they parked their bikes and carefully made their way through the bushes. What they discovered was a dark, mysterious cave entrance. The original excitement quickly turned to a bit of nervousness, but Alex looked at Leo and said, “We’ve always been longing for an adventure. Let’s do this!” Leo nodded, his eyes showing a mix of fear and determination.
They switched on the flashlight and stepped inside. The cave was filled with strange echoes and a muddy smell. As they explored deeper, they were fascinated by the beautiful, sparkling stalactites (钟乳石) hanging from the ceiling. But then, the flashlight started to flash on and off. Suddenly, they heard an awful sound. Leo grasped Alex’s arm nervously. It could have been a small animal, but in the dim it was hard to tell.
Just as they were trying to calm themselves, the flashlight became completely dead. Alex quickly reached into his backpack, his hands shaking slightly. He remembered packing an extra set of batteries but couldn’t find them at first. Meanwhile, Leo kept glancing around anxiously, his ears attempting to identify any other noises from all directions. Fortunately, Alex felt and found the batteries in the dark. To their relief, the flashlight lit up again. But now, they weren’t sure if they should continue deeper or turn back. After a brief hesitation, Alex said, “We’ve come this far. Let’s keep going. We’ll be more careful.” Leo nodded, and they moved on, hand in hand.

【答案】Dear fellow students,
I’m Li Hua, president of the Student Union. To strengthen our physical fitness, I’m here to call on everyone to take exercise actively.
Firstly, set aside specific time for exercise. You can jog for 20 minutes every morning or cycle to school if possible. Moreover, actively engage in school sports clubs. There, you can not only enjoy the fun of competing but also learn professional skills from coaches and peers.
Let’s enjoy the happiness brought by sports and make it a part of our daily life!

【答案】With cautious steps, they went further inside. The air grew chillier, making them shiver, but neither suggested turning back. Suddenly, a large rock blocked their way. Alex sized it up and said, “Let’s move it together.” Leo nodded. With joint efforts, they pushed against the big rock. Their hands scraped and arms ached, yet their combined strength won. As the rock was removed, a narrow path came into view. “We make a great team!” Alex let out a long sigh of relief with a big smile spreading across his face.
Hearts beating rapidly, they hurried towards the path. Following it cautiously, they finally stepped out of the cave. An amazing sight greeted them — a huge, green forest stretching as far as they could see. Alex turned to Leo, eyes shining with pure joy. “This is really awesome! I can’t believe we made it.” Leo patted him on the back heartily, “If it weren’t for you to keep me going on, I might have given up.” At that moment, the bond of their friendship tightened and an thirst for further exploration took root deep within them.
