B When a new product totally fails, companies typically try to move on as quickly as possible and put all of their energy into developing fresh ideas that they hope will catch on. But the Museum of Failure never forgets. This traveling exhibition, which was first launched in Sweden in 2017, has arrived in New York City. By focusing on more than 150 commercial ideas that didn’t succeed for various reasons, the exhibition aims to stimulate discussion about accepting and learning from failure, for example, new Coke, limeade-flavored Oreo cookies, crystal Pepsi and a “hula chair” for exercise. The exhibition is organized by Samuel West, a clinical psychologist who specializes in organizational science. He hopes it could help normalize and interpret the concept of failure, which he sees as a critical learning opportunity. “My research is focused on helping organizations to be more innovative,” West says. “And one of the big problems of innovation is the fear of failure.” Indeed, many of the brands featured in the Museum of Failure haven’t let one or two frustrated efforts stand in their way. For example, Oreo has made plenty of delicious new flavors, and both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo are still booming. “People feel liberated when they see big well-known brands and companies that have a lot of money and skills and experience still fail when trying new things,” West says. “People feel liberated, like ‘big boys’ can fail, so why can’t we?” The exhibition has interactive features like a “Share Your Failure” wall, where visitors can write their own mistakes on sticky notes. West says, “We want people to take meaningful risks and learn from them. That’s where the action is, when it comes to innovation: People trying something new, accepting the level of risk that comes with it and learning from it if the new thing fails. You fail but you gain insight, build on it, try a different version, tinker(修补) and come back again with something better.” 4. What is the second paragraph mainly about? A. The fame of big brands. B. The difficulty of innovation. C. The purpose of the exhibition. D The importance of fresh ideas. 5. What does Samuel West think of failure? A. Costly. B. Relative. C. Unavoidable. D. Valuable. 6. What do Samuel West’s words in paragraph 4 show? A. His exhibition is easy for people to understand. B. Big companies are supportive of the exhibition. C. The exhibition can help reduce people’s fear of failure. D. Innovation spirit is of great importance to big companies. 7. What did Samuel West suggest people do in terms of innovation? A. Try to avoid risks. B. Learn from failure. C. Refer to big brands’ ideas. D. Put all your energy into it. C For decades virtual reality (VR) has been viewed as the future of filmmaking, able to offer experiences more immersive than traditional cinema and television. In an essay written in 1955, titled The Cinema of the Future, the cinematographer Morton Heilig predicted that filmmaking would advance to the point where it can “reveal the new scientific world to man in the full sensual vividness and dynamic energy of his awareness”. According to VR expert and artist Chris Milk, films of the future will offer tailored immersive experiences that will be able to tell a story in real time, which is just for you and uniquely satisfies you and what your likes and dislikes are. He prefers terms like “story living” to the standard one such as “story telling”. He believes cinematic experiences will develop to “feel as natural and as real as a day in your life, but have the amazing characteristics of the kind of exciting stories that we are used to being told”. The influential journalist and entrepreneur Nonny de la Pena, who has been described as “the Godmother of VR”, says, “The first word comes to mind when I think about the future of the medium is ‘volumetric (立体的)’. In the future, flat media will still be there with us, just like the radio will still be with us. But there’s no way that filmmaking is going to stay flat.” With VR technology advancing at a rapid rate, possibilities are endless. Describing VR as dangerous because filmmakers operating in this space have less control than they do in non-interactive experiences, Steven Spielberg said that the virtual world would give viewers a lot of freedom not to take directions from the storytellers but make their own choices. However, many would regard this kind of future, where viewers will have the ability to shape the stories they experience, as positive rather than negative. Viewers being able to make their own choices concurs with Heilig’s prediction that the cinema of the future will no longer be a visual art, but an art of awareness. 8. Why is VR considered the future of filmmaking? A. It is more vivid and dynamic. B. It is related to the scientific world. C. It is equipped with advanced technology. D. It provides real feelings for the audience. 9. What will characterize future films according to Chris Milk? A. They will get more personal. B. They will focus on telling stories. C. They will become more volumetric. D. They will be a virtual copy of the world. 10. What does the underlined word “concurs” probably mean in the last paragraph? A. Deals. B. Compares. C. Agrees. D. Communicates. 11. Which is the most suitable title for the text? A. Who invented VR technology? B. What will films be like in the future? C. How can VR be used in future films? D. Why does VR have an impact on filmmaking? D The saying goes, “Good things come in small packages.” But many online shoppers don’t know that joy. If you order a comb the size of an envelope, there’s a good chance it will arrive in a cardboard box that could fit a violin. This trend is a sustainability disaster. And the growth in online shopping is making things worse. Paper packaging production has increased by 65% over the past two decades. Companies aren’t simply careless in the mismatch between product and container sizing, notes Kronhaus, director at Sun Packaging Technologies. Often a warehouse doesn’t have enough boxes of the right size, forcing packers to pick the next best alternative, which is often bigger. “When you’re relying on humans and they’ve got 100,000 orders to get out, they have to get it done fast,” says Kronhaus. Especially when customers are paying the shipping charges, it doesn’t hurt the company’s profit to choose the next size up. In some cases, consumers may place more value on products in larger containers. This is called “packaging psychology”, and some companies use it to their advantage. Whatever the reason, overpackaging creates substantial environmental issues. Currently, 54% of the pulp (纸浆) used to make the paper packaging is made from recycled paper, according to Canopy, an environmental organization. But 43% is still made from virgin forest fibre — new wood that is harvested for the first time. Half of this virgin fibre could be coming from “ancient and endangered” forests. That leaves just 3% of pulp that’s made from forest-free eco-friendly fibres like wheat straw. This is a major issue as forest preservation is essential in the fight against climate change. Sustainability advocates are going directly to companies. Canopy, for instance, advises companies to use recyclable, eco-friendly packaging materials. Ideally, however, companies should find ways to abandon overpackaging. Some e-commerce companies are working toward this goal. There is innovation throughout the past few years, enabling more accurate sizing in packaging. Devices like Cubiscan scan the products and instruct a machine to build a box of the correct size or determine what existing size box is suitable. Companies including Walmart and Amazon are now using this technology in certain facilities. 12. How does the author introduce the topic? A. By giving an example. B. By describing a study. C. By justifying an assumption. D. By asking an interesting question. 13. Which is a possible cause of oversized packaging? A. Packers need to work with high efficiency. B. Packers become less careful under pressure. C. Companies need to control shipping charges. D. Customers often keep containers for use in life. 14. What can we infer from the numbers given in paragraph 3? A. The huge impact of climate change. B. The wide use of pulp in packaging. C. The great loss of forest resources. D. The critical role of ancient forests. 15. What is the main purpose of the last paragraph? A. To predict the future of packaging. B. To list efforts to improve packaging. C. To advocate for proper packaging materials. D. To stress the importance of proper packaging. Is studying 12 hours a day possible? The absolute highlight of that place was “Bubbles the Clown (小丑)”, who performed many fun tricks and created beautiful balloon animals and flowers. It filled Lucy’s fantasy and curiosity. “Mom and Dad,” Lucy said, “I want my birthday party to be at this place. I love ‘Bubbles the Clown’.” Her direct wish was that she could enjoy the big day with friends there. “We like this place, too, Lucy. We will tell the restaurant that we want to hold your birthday party here.” Her parents agreed to her request. Lucy was excited and said, “I can’t wait until my friends come here for my birthday. I believe they will love ‘Bubbles the Clown’, too.” Lucy went home and mailed out her party invitations. Then she crossed off the days on her calendar. She was eager for her special day. Well the days went by quickly, and it was two days before her birthday party. Lucy was talking so excitedly about the party to her friends that she didn’t see the rock on the sidewalk ahead of her. Consequently, she tripped over the rock and cut her ankle. Her friends immediately rushed to the principal for help, who called Lucy’s parents and then called an ambulance. Lucy was taken to the emergency room, and before long, she rested in a hospital bed. While her ankle was not broken, it was badly hurt. The doctor told Lucy that she needed to rest at home and that she could not move for about one week. “But I will have my birthday party in two days. D. The importance of fresh ideas. C Refer to big brands’ ideas. D. Put all your energy into it. 【答案】4. C 5. D 6. C 7. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇新闻报道,主要讲的是“失败博物馆”展览及其意义。 【4题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第二段“By focusing on more than 150 commercial ideas that didn’t succeed for various reasons, the exhibition aims to stimulate discussion about accepting and learning from failure, for example, new Coke, limeade-flavored Oreo cookies, crystal Pepsi and a “hula chair” for exercise.(该展览聚焦于150多个因各种原因未能成功的商业创意,旨在激发人们关于接受失败并从失败中学习的讨论,例如新口味的可乐、青柠口味的奥利奥饼干、水晶百事可乐以及一款用于锻炼的呼啦椅。)”可知,第二段主要讲的是展览的目的。故选C。 【5题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“He hopes it could help normalize and interpret the concept of failure, which he sees as a critical learning opportunity.(他希望这能帮助正常化和解释失败的概念,他认为这是一个重要的学习机会。)”可知,Samuel West认为失败是有价值的。故选D。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段““People feel liberated when they see big well-known brands and companies that have a lot of money and skills and experience still fail when trying new things,” West says. “People feel liberated, like ‘big boys’ can fail, so why can’t we?”(“当人们看到那些拥有大量资金、技能和经验的大品牌和大公司在尝试新事物时仍然失败时,他们会感到解脱,”West说,“人们会感到解脱,就像‘大人物’也会失败一样,那么我们为什么不能呢?”)”可知,Samuel West在第四段的话说明了这个展览可以帮助减少人们对失败的恐惧。故选C。 【7题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“We want people to take meaningful risks and learn from them. That’s where the action is, when it comes to innovation: People trying something new, accepting the level of risk that comes with it and learning from it if the new thing fails.(我们希望人们能够承担有意义风险并从中学习。当谈到创新时,这就是关键所在:人们尝试新事物,接受伴随而来的风险,如果新事物失败了,就从中吸取教训。)”可知,Samuel West在创新方面建议人们从失败中学习。故选B。 C For decades virtual reality (VR) has been viewed as the future of filmmaking, able to offer experiences more immersive than traditional cinema and television. 【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要探讨了虚拟现实(VR)被视为电影制作未来的原因,还介绍了专家对未来电影特点的看法,以及VR技术对电影制作带来的影响。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中“For decades virtual reality (VR) has been viewed as the future of filmmaking, able to offer experiences more immersive than traditional cinema and television.(几十年来,虚拟现实(VR)一直被视为电影制作的未来,它能够提供比传统电影和电视更沉浸式的体验)”可知,VR被认为是电影制作的未来是因为它能为观众提供更真实的感受,让观众有沉浸式体验。故选D项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“According to VR expert and artist Chris Milk, films of the future will offer tailored immersive experiences that will be able to tell a story in real time, which is just for you and uniquely satisfies you and what your likes and dislikes are.(据VR专家兼艺术家克里斯·米尔克称,未来的电影将提供量身定制的沉浸式体验,能够实时讲述故事,这是专门为你打造的,能独特地满足你以及你的喜好)”可知,未来电影的特点是更加个性化。故选A项。 【10题详解】 词句猜测题。根据最后一段中“With VR technology advancing at a rapid rate, possibilities are endless. Describing VR as dangerous because filmmakers operating in this space have less control than they do in non-interactive experiences, Steven Spielberg said that the virtual world would give viewers a lot of freedom not to take directions from the storytellers but make their own choices. However, many would regard this kind of future, where viewers will have the ability to shape the stories they experience, as positive rather than negative.(随着VR技术的快速发展,可能性是无限的。史蒂芬·斯皮尔伯格将虚拟现实描述为危险的,因为与非互动体验相比,电影制作人在这个领域的控制力更弱。他说,虚拟世界将给观众很大的自由,让他们不必听从故事讲述者的指示,而是自己做出选择。然而,许多人认为这种观众有能力塑造他们所经历的故事的未来是积极的,而不是消极的)”可知,VR技术让观众有了更多的自由,不必再听从电影制作者的指示,而是自己做出选择。由此可知,划线词所在句“Viewers being able to make their own choices concurs with Heilig’s prediction that the cinema of the future will no longer be a visual art, but an art of awareness.(观众能够做出自己的选择,这与海利格的预测concurs,即未来的电影将不再是视觉艺术,而是一种意识艺术)”是指,观众的自主选择权让观影不再是单纯的视觉艺术,而是一种意识艺术,这与海利格的预测是一致的。所以concurs的意思是“(与……)相符,一致”,与agrees同义。故选C项。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段中“For decades virtual reality (VR) has been viewed as the future of filmmaking, able to offer experiences more immersive than traditional cinema and television. (几十年来,虚拟现实(VR)一直被视为电影制作的未来,它能够提供比传统电影和电视更具沉浸感的体验)”、第二段中“According to VR expert and artist Chris Milk, films of the future will offer tailored immersive experiences... (据VR专家兼艺术家克里斯·米尔克称,未来的电影将提供量身定制的沉浸式体验……)”和第三段中Nonny de la Pena的话“The first word comes to mind when I think about the future of the medium is ‘volumetric (立体的)’.(当我想到这种媒介的未来时,我想到的第一个词是‘立体的’)”等内容可知,文章围绕未来电影的样子展开,介绍了不同人对未来电影特点的看法,如VR带来的影响等。故B项“What will films be like in the future? (未来的电影会是什么样的?)”能概括文章内容,最适合作为文章标题。故选B项。 D The saying goes, “Good things come in small packages.” But many online shoppers don’t know that joy. B Packers become less careful under pressure. 【答案】12. A 13. A 14. C 15. B 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了网购过度包装的问题及其对环境的影响,以及提出的一些改进措施。 【12题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“The saying goes, “Good things come in small packages.” But many online shoppers don’t know that joy. If you order a comb the size of an envelope, there’s a good chance it will arrive in a cardboard box that could fit a violin. This trend is a sustainability disaster. And the growth in online shopping is making things worse. Paper packaging production has increased by 65% over the past two decades.(俗话说,‘好东西都是小包装的。’但许多网购者并不知道这种乐趣。如果你订了一把信封大小的梳子,很有可能会装在一个能装下小提琴的纸板箱里送来。这一趋势是一场可持续性的灾难。而网购的增长让情况变得更糟。过去20年,纸包装生产增长了65%。)”可知,作者在第一段通过举订一把小梳子却用大箱子装的例子来引出网购商品过度包装的话题。故选A。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“Often a warehouse doesn’t have enough boxes of the right size, forcing packers to pick the next best alternative, which is often bigger. ‘When you’re relying on humans and they’ve got 100,000 orders to get out, they have to get it done fast,’ says Kronhaus.(仓库里往往没有足够的合适尺寸的箱子,迫使包装工选择下一个最好的替代品,而这个替代品往往更大。Kronhaus说:‘当你依赖人力,而他们有10万份订单要处理时,他们必须快速完成’。)”可知,仓库里没有足够合适尺寸的箱子,加上包装工为了快速完成工作,会选择尺寸更大的箱子,这是过度包装的可能原因,即包装工需要高效工作。故选A。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“Currently, 54% of the pulp (纸浆) used to make the paper packaging is made from recycled paper, according to Canopy, an environmental organization. But 43% is still made from virgin forest fibre — new wood that is harvested for the first time. Half of this virgin fibre could be coming from ‘ancient and endangered’ forests. That leaves just 3% of pulp that’s made from forest-free eco-friendly fibres like wheat straw.(据环保组织Canopy称,目前用于制作纸包装的纸浆中,有54%来自回收纸。但仍有43%的纸浆是由原始森林纤维制成的——即首次采伐的新木材。其中一半的原始森林纤维可能来自‘古老且濒危’的森林。这样一来,只剩下3%的纸浆是由小麦秸秆等无森林的环保纤维制成的。)”可知,从第三段给出的数字我们可以推断用于包装的纸浆大部分来源于原始森林,这意味着森林资源的巨大损失。故选C。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Sustainability advocates are going directly to companies. Companies including Walmart and Amazon are now using this technology in certain facilities.(可持续性倡导者直接找上了公司。 Is studying 12 hours a day possible? Lucy and her parents went there for lunch, and they found that Funtime had a special room filled with all sorts of games and delicious food. Well, the days went by quickly, and it was two days before her birthday party. My friends will be there, and ‘Bubbles the Clown’ will be there, too!” Lucy cried. She couldn’t hold back her tears. With the help of Lucy’s friends, they transformed their living room into a joyful party space with colorful decorations and delicious food. Of course, a surprise visit from “Bubbles the Clown” was essential. Lucy was happy that day. However, she still felt disappointed about not being able to spend this special moment at Funtime. Her parents just smiled at her, expressing their love for her. Suddenly, the doorbell rang, and in front of the door stood “Bubbles the Clown”. Lucy was so surprised that she could not speak. Learning that it was a surprise her parents had arranged for her, Lucy felt surrounded by love and joy. “Bubbles the Clown” performed all the tricks he did at Funtime.
