If Confucius(孔夫子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.
While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.
But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.
In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually included Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take adventages of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Westerners philosophy. Students in the United Sates, at the same time, are racing to lean Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.
So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well. Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West. As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.

In 1937, my father, who was almost 20 years old, started a long journey. He traveled a thousand miles across China with his university, Zhejiang University, during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (抗日战争). The Chinese government wanted to keep the university students safe because they were important for the country’s future. As the university planned for the journey, the Head Librarian of Zhejiang Library, asked the university to take a collection of books with them.
The books were called “Siku Quanshu”. Created in the 18th century, this was a huge encyclopedia (百科全书) with 2.3 million pages and about 997 million words. It was so important that plans were made to protect it at any cost, even though it added another 230 boxes to the students’ cargo.
The journey was not easy. Students and teachers were facing the dangers from air attacks. They were always tired and hungry. They had to sleep on the ground in old temples but they continued their classes whenever they could. To protect the books, they tried to move by boat or truck whenever possible; at other times, they would put the boxes into carts (手推车). Sometimes the students had to carry some of the books in their backpacks. One scary moment was when a box of the Siku Quanshu books fell into a river. They quickly saved the books and dried them in a local temple.
After 1,400 miles and 28 months on the road, the university group finally reached a small town called Zunyi in Guizhou province. They stayed there in simple classrooms and dorms, until the war moved deeper into China. To further protect the Siku Quanshu, the books were hidden in a nearby cave, guarded by university staff. The books made it through the war in surprisingly good condition and were sent back to Zhejiang Library.
This amazing story shows how a group of young students and their teachers did everything they could to protect their culture’s treasures. They faced many dangers and hardships, but they never gave up. They worked together to keep their knowledge safe.

Do you notice that students spend the same amount of time in class, but some get better grades than others? In some ways, it’s because they are different listeners. When having classes, some of them listen carefully. We call them effective listeners. Some just daydream or talk to others. They are ineffective listeners.
How are some listeners effective? First of all, they don’t care about some poor situations, like an uncomfortable seat or a personal problem. They say “No” to anything that will stop them from understanding and remembering. After leaving a class or meeting, they remember what the speakers said, not the room conditions or the speaker’s accent (口音).
Effective listeners always pay attention to the message itself. They try not to be influenced (被影响) by their own feelings or ideas. They do not decide if the thing is boring, too easy, or too difficult before listening. They like getting the challenge of new ideas. To help remember difficult ideas, they write down important words and phrases.
However, ineffective listeners often daydream. They don’t like to hear what they don’t agree with or easily understand. They are often so busy taking notes that they miss the speaker’s main idea. These listeners leave a speech or a class with a notebook full of words, but the notebook means nothing.
Do you wish to do well in your study? Start to be an effective listener. It may help.

B.Betty continued paying attention to the teacher while others were making noise.
C.Eric didn’t listen to the teacher when he found the maths problem easy for him.
D.Suzy stopped listening when she found the speaker was wrong.
39.Where can you find this article?

The genre first came to us audiences in the 1990s and skyrocketed in popularity in the 2000s. Today, reality TV is a multibillion-dollar industry and a major part of popular culture. Some people say there are too many shows, though, and complain that they feature fake or exaggerated (夸大的) storylines and situations in an effort to win audiences. Other people think they’re still entertaining. What do you think? Has reality television gone too far?
Yes — it’s just so fake
There’s nothing real about reality television. These shows may not have actors or scripts, but they’re still fake—so what’s the point in watching? Many shows place an unhealthy emphasis (强调的) on money and beauty, which makes viewers feel bad about their own lives and can harm their mental health. Competition shows can also promote (促进) the idea that it’s OK to do anything in order to win, which is a terrible lesson for viewers. Finally, it’s no fun to turn everyday hobbies like baking or crafting into competitions. People should enjoy those hobbies for the sake of doing them, not so they can win a contest or get on television.
No — it’s all in good fun
Reality TV is harmless entertainment that viewers know isn’t “real.” It still gives people something to bond (与……紧密联系) over when they talk about the latest episode or host watch parties. There are plenty of reality shows that are good-natured and not mean. Even competition programs can teach viewers that getting ahead often involves hard work, discipline (自律), and sticking to a goal. Reality shows can also demonstrate (证明) the value of teamwork and cooperation. Finally, reality shows like kids’ baking or crafting competitions can give participants a creative outlet and inspire viewers to take up a new hobby or find a new passion.
