With the invention of radio, TV and most recently the Internet and computer games, it seems that reading books is no longer a popular activity. However, I believe that books are an important part of our lives. Books offer a great wealth of learning and at a cheaper price than taking a course. Books can make people cleverer, because heavy readers have greater knowledge of how things work and who or what people were. Everything in today's society requires (需要) reading. Imagine trying to do something as simple as reading the directions (说明) on a medicine bottle without good reading skills. Someone could not understand them and become very sick or even die. Even something as simple as walking or driving through the city could become very dangerous without enough reading. Sometimes you must be able to understand what is written and explain the meaning of it. Some people say reading is a waste of time and we can do better with our time. Even if we don’t read books, we still read every day. And reading can improve our abilities. Reading is one of the greatest things we can do in our free time. With a book, you can travel anywhere you want, do anything you want, and talk to anyone you want. Reading is very important in our lives no matter your age. 28.What activity is less popular these days than before? A.Reading books. B.Listening to the radio. C.Watching TV. D.Surfing the Internet. 29.We can learn from the second paragraph that ______. A.reading can improve your memory B.reading can make you interesting C.reading can make you smarter D.reading can reduce stress 30.Some people dislike to read books, because they think ______. On the way a strong storm draws the ship off course and the ship finally arrives at an unknown land mass. Gulliver sees a giant following the boat. He runs away, and when he stops, he is on a hill. He is greatly surprised to see that the grass around is about twenty feet high. He walks down a path through a field but cannot see anything over a crop because it is forty feet high. He tries to climb a set of steps into the next field, but he cannot climb over them because they are too high. When he sees another giant, Gulliver hides from him, but the giant calls for more people to come, and they begin to cut the crop with scythes (镰刀). Gulliver lies down and feels sad about his situation, thinking about how unimportant he must be to these giant creatures. A giant finally notices him, and picks him up between his fingers to get a closer look. Finally the giant puts him in his pocket and begins to walk toward his master. The giant’s master, the farmer of these fields, takes Gulliver from his man and watches him more closely. He asks the other men if they have ever seen anything like Gulliver, and then puts him onto the ground. They sit around him. Gulliver begins to speak as loudly as he can. He gives a purse full of gold to the farmer, but the farmer cannot figure out what it is. 31.Why does Gulliver arrive at the land mass? A.Because he is amazed at the natural beauty. B.Because a storm draws the ship off course. C.Because he finds the giants there interesting. D.Because a giant leads his ship to the land mass. 32.What stops Gulliver stepping into the next field? A.The high crops. B.The hard steps. C.The scythes. D.The high hill. 33.Which of the following can be the correct order of the story? ①A giant catches Gulliver and puts him into his pocket. ②Gulliver tries his best to communicate with the giant. ③Gulliver hides from the giant. ④The farmer puts Gulliver onto the ground. ⑤Gulliver sets sails on a ship, travelling to the Cape of Good Hope. A.①⑤③④② B.⑤③①④② C.③①②⑤④ D.⑤④①③② D The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is an area in the ocean which has a huge floating collection of plastic waste. It is located in the North Pacific Ocean. According to some reports, it is around 1.6 million square kilometers in size. This is so big that it now covers an area of the ocean similar to six times the size of the United Kingdom. Most of the plastic is not large items like bottles or boards. A large percentage of the debris (碎片) is made up of “microplastics” (smaller than 5 millimeters). These microplastics are the tiny pieces of larger items that have been worn down over time. This can be caused by the sun, the waves and even by sea creatures (生物). Items do not just stay floating on the water. Different types of plastics can float just below the water or even much lower down into the ocean. Larger items include fishing ropes and nets that have been lost or dropped at sea. The largest attempt (尝试) in history is now being made to understand and deal with the problem. Scientists have been counting, weighing and separating every tiny item of plastic collected. Larger items are easier to remove from the ocean than the tiny microplastics. However, if these larger items are not removed, they may break down into smaller pieces. This means it can stay in the environment for hundreds of years, so every piece of plastic ever produced is still there today. It is also a danger to fish, birds and other sea life because creatures mistake tiny plastics for food. The tiny microplastics take in pollutants which make them poisonous (有毒的) to sea life. Some larger plastics can also hurt creatures. The nets floating in the ocean are known to catch sea life and make it impossible for them to get away. Fish, sea turtles and dolphins are among the creatures in great danger from these “ghost nets”. Of course, the best solution of all is for us to try to reduce the plastic entering the oceans first. If we want to create less waste to reuse and recycle, then we can reduce the number of new plastics adding to this and other garbage patches. 34.The writer talked about the size of the garbage patch in Paragraph 1 to ________. A.show how serious the problem is B.guess where plastic waste can be found C.explain how big the UK’s area is D.discuss how the garbage patch formed 35.The following sentence would be best placed at the beginning of ________. Plastic is cheap and quite easy to make, however, it is very long-lasting. A.Paragraph 2 B.Paragraph 3 C.Paragraph 4 D.Paragraph 5 36.What can we learn about microplastics? A.They are from the sea. B.They are easier to clean up. C.They are the food to the birds. D.They are formed over time. 37.Why is plastic harmful to sea creatures? A.Because larger plastics take their living area in the ocean. B.Because different types of plastics can get down into the ocean. C.Because people try to create less waste by reusing and recycling. D.Because sea creatures may die as they eat polluted microplastics. 第Ⅱ卷(主观题 共50分) 四、词汇运用(本大题共10小题,每小题1分,共10分) (A)根据句意和汉语注释,在答题卡对应题号的横线上,写出单词的正确形式。 38.Kitty got married last year. With the invention of radio, TV and most recently the Internet and computer games, it seems that reading books is no longer a popular activity. 根据第一段“This is so big that it now covers an area of the ocean similar to six times the size of the United Kingdom.”可知,作者在第一段中谈到了垃圾带的大小,以表明这个问题的严重性。故选A。 35.推理判断题。根据第四段“This means it can stay in the environment for hundreds of years, so every piece of plastic ever produced is still there today.”可知第四段提到塑料是可以在环境中停留数百年,强调了它的耐用持久性,所以改句可以置于第四段开头。故选C。 36.细节理解题。根据第二段“These microplastics are the tiny pieces of larger items that have been worn down over time.”可知,微塑料是随着时间的推移而形成的。故选D。 37.细节理解题。根据第四段“It is also a danger to fish, birds and other sea life because creatures mistake tiny plastics for food.
