Hamburgers and French fries are known all over the world as “typical American food.” But when you travel
in the United States, you will see that Americans have many different kinds of diet choices. ___65___, many
Americans spend a lot of time thinking very hard about how and what they eat. They think that the traditional
American diet is bad for their health and bad for the environment. As a result, you will see many labels and the
___66___of food that might seem confusing. Here is a short guide to help you understand some of the choices:
ORGANIC foods are grown with no chemicals. There are also no GMOs (转基因作物)in organic foods.
People who choose organic foods think they are better for their health and for the environment.
VEGETARIAN food contains no meat. People choose a vegetarian diet for a number of reasons. Some believe
that eating meat does ___67___ to their health. Others have environmental reasons. They believe eating plants is
better for the environment. Cows and other "meat" animals at the top of the food chain need lots of food, water and
energy. In contrast, vegetables like carrots, beans and potatoes, on the ___68___end of the food chain, need much
less. Still others believe that people should not eat animals for ethical reasons. They believe that humans should not
kill animals for any reason.
LOW-FAT foods have very little fat in them. People who are trying to lose weight, or people who have heart
disease often eat low-fat diets. Many Americans have heart disease or are overweight, so low-fat diets and foods are
very ___69___ in the U.S.
LOCAL food is grown less than 100 miles from you. Local food is usually very ___70___ and buying it helps
nearby farms and other businesses. People who eat local food care about the environment. They don't want to eat
food that must travel far on trucks, boats and planes as this uses too much gasoline and causes more pollution.

Never before have so many people been packed into cities--places such as Los Angeles, Istanbul, Tokyo and
Lima--that are regularly affected by earthquakes. Located near the edge of Earth’s huge, shifting plates (板块),
these cities face the r____71____ of serious damage and economic disaster from large quakes, as well as tsunamis,
fires and other kinds of disasters that earthquakes often bring about.
We u_____72_____ earthquakes better than we did a century ago. Scientists are working hard to be able to
predict them, but is this possible? Today, some of the s_____73_____ questions about earthquakes remain difficult
to answer: Why do they start? What makes them stop? Perhaps the most import question scientist need to answer,
though, is this: Are there clear patterns in earthquakes, or are they basically random and impossible to predict?
In Japan, government scientists say they have an answer to the question. “We hold the belief that earthquake
predicted the l_____74____ of its next great earthquake: the region of Tokai southwest of Tokyo. Here, two plate
boundaries have c_____75_____ huge earthquakes every 100 to 150 years, but there hasn’t been a major quake here
since 1854. The theory is that stress is building up in this zone, which could lead to a very huge quake.
U_____76_____, this is more a forecast than prediction. It’s one thing to say that an earthquake is likely to happen
in a high-risk area, and it’s another to predict exactly where and when the quake will occur.
The desire for a precise prediction of time and place has led to another theory: the idea of “preslip”. Naoyuki
Kato, another earthquake scientist, says his laboratory experiments show that b_____77_____ a fault(断层)in
the Earth’s crust(地壳)finally breaks and leads to an earthquake, it slips just a little. If we can detect these early
slips taking place deep in the Earth’s crust, we may be able to predict the next big quake.

Most people who move to a foreign country may experience a period of time when they feel very homesick and
have a lot of stress. This feeling is often called “culture shock”. It is important to understand and learn how to deal
with it if you want to adapt successfully to your new home’s culture.
Generally speaking, there are several stages you will experience if you move to a foreign country. The first
stage is usually known as the excitement stage. When arriving in a new environment, you’ll be interested in the new
culture; everything will seem exciting and everyone will seem friendly.
But it isn’t long before the excitement stage moves into the second stage. The excitement you felt before
changes to stress. It seems that everything is difficult; the language is hard to learn, friends are difficult to make, and
even simple things like shopping are challenges. It is at this stage that you are likely to feel anxious and homesick.
This is the stage which is referred to as “culture shock”. However, culture shock doesn’t last for very long. If you are
( )
one of those who manage to overcome it, you’ll move into the “recovery” stage. At this stage, you start to
understand and accept the way things are done and the way people behave in your new environment.
The last stage is the “home” stage. This is the stage when you start to feel at home in the new culture. You start
to learn from your new home, and prefect certain aspects of the new culture to your own culture.
Culture shock is normal. Everyone in a new situation will go through some form of it. Be brave, and
overcoming culture shock is a piece of cake.
