B When it comes to reading, people have different preferences. Some people will choose paper books because they’re easy to borrow and share. Others will go for e-readers, perhaps on a phone, because they’re convenient. But which is the more environment-friendly choice? Digital reading (数字阅读) is on the rise, now making up about 15% of the total US book market. However, traditional print publishing is still by far the most popular type—and it comes with a high carbon footprint (碳足迹). According to a 2023 report from Words Rated, print book publishing is the third biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions (排放), and 32 million trees are cut down each year in the US to make paper for books. Then there’s the problem of printing and transport, not to mention the many unsold books that are destroyed. Digital reading seems to be better than print because it is paperless, so it saves trees and transport. Moreover, technology companies that make e-readers, such as Amazon, offer recycling programs for old devices (设备). But digital devices also come with a large carbon footprint, mainly at the production stage. So back to the earlier question: which way of reading is more environmentally friendly? “If you buy an e-reader and you read lots of books on it, then it’s the lowest carbon thing to do. But if you buy it, read a couple of books, and find that you prefer paper books, then it’s the worst of all worlds.” said Mike Berners-Lee, a professor at Lancaster Environment Centre in the United Kingdom. Yet, Berners-Lee also said that reading is still, relatively speaking, an environmental-friendly activity. 29.Which aspect (方面) of digital devices has the largest influence on the environment? A.Its transportation. B.Its waste management. C.Its production process. D.Its recycling programs. 30.According to the text, it is better to choose digital reading if you________. A.read a lot B.hardly take notes C.enjoy reading at night D.only read books when necessary 31.What is the most suitable title for the text? A.Why Should We Choose Digital Reading? B.How Does Print Publishing Affect the Environment? C.Will Traditional Print Reading Disappear in the Future? D.Which is Better for the Environment, Paper Books or E-readers? C Ten years ago, many people thought that the age of print books was coming to an end. The books that had been with readers for hundreds of years were about to disappear. Soon, we’d all read e-books on the little electronic screens. But it seems not true. At least in the UK, as The Guardian shows, sales of e-books are falling while sales of print books are rising. More surprisingly, young people are buying the most print books. In the UK, more than 60% of the 16-to-24-year-olds prefer print books to e-books. The most popular reason they gave is: “I like to hold the real book.” Why are print books still popular? Books become very personal to lovers of reading. It often starts with the way they get them. Many readers like to write down their names in the book when they’ve bought a book. And they carry books around with them everywhere. Besides, some accidents make the book even more personal. If there’s a mark made on the pages from coffee or food, it doesn’t matter. It’s how readers make “friends” with print books. Of course, some could say that people like reading e-books on Kindles or iPads. But it isn’t quite the same. A Kindle can hold as many pieces of writing as a whole library. However, a story is more likely (可能) to enter our memory for a long time after we spend time turning its pages on our favourite sofa. To some readers, print books are as valuable as photos of family members. This “friendship” with books is not just feelings. Research has shown that readers remember more information from print books than from electronic ones. However, it’s clear that e-books are here to stay. They aren’t a “here today, gone tomorrow” thing. But we are also certain that print books, which have been with us since the fifteen century, are there to stay, too. 32.In the UK, which of the following is TRUE? A.Print books are not made now. B.The sales of e-books are rising. C.Lovers of print books are the old. D.The British still enjoy print books. 33.To book lovers, what makes print books special? A.Stories from print books are quickly remembered. B.Print books are much more valuable than e-books. C.Having print books gives them personal experiences. D.They keep less information in mind with print books. 34.In the last paragraph, what is a “here today, gone tomorrow” thing like? A.It is going well. B.It won’t disappear. C.It never changes. D.It stays for a while. 35.What’s the purpose of the text? A.To explain why print books will remain. B.To show the advantages of print books. C.To suggest readers read more print books. D.To introduce two different kinds of books. D It was Jennifer Williams’s mother who made her interested in books lifelong. As a librarian (图书管理员), she read to her three children every day. “Not until we went to preschool” Williams told vadogwood. com, a local news site. “Until we went to college.” When Williams, now 54, became a teacher in Danville, Virginia, she wanted her students to fall in love with reading just as she had. But early on, she realized that some kids had little chance to develop reading habits. “It’s very easy for teachers of young children to find out which kids read and who do not,” she said. “It’s clear at the end of the first day of school.” To Williams, the way to solve the problem was simple: Give kids books. In 2017, as part of a civil (市政的) event called Engage Danville, she gave away 900 used children’s books over three days. Most people would be satisfied with that. “Anybody could do that,” she said. “I wanted to do something that’s going to go with my faith (信仰), my work rules, my everything.” In order to realize her dream, she set a new goal for herself: Give away one million books. It sounds like an unreachable number, but as Williams posted on Facebook: “Don’t complain in the bedrooms if you aren’t willing to work hard out on the field.” So she got to work, first by roping in friends to donate books or money to buy books. Before long, as news of Williams’ project spread, strangers started leaving boxes of books at her front door. As quickly as the books come in, Williams gives them to local schools—free of charge—and also gave away books to little free libraries around her city of 41000 just over the North Carolina border (边界). She also hosts a book club for people in the local jail (监狱). In the four years, she’s been doing all this, the Book Lady, as Williams has come to be known, has given away more than 78, 000 books—only 922, 000 more to reach her goal. And she’s not slowing down. It’s too important for kids with few choices. “Reading can take you anywhere,” she told a reporter. “You can travel in time and space. If you can read, you can learn almost anything.” 36.What do you know about Jennifer from the passage? A.Jennifer William is a librarian. B.There are only three children in her family. C.Her mother read to her until she went to college. D.She became a teacher when she is 54. 37.Jennifer donated 900 books because __________. YES! I started to read wuxia novels when I was in Grade 3 because my parents spent a lot of time on them and tried to get these books in different ways, which they considered as treasure of them. More importantly, they often told me stories about heroes in Jin Yong’s works, which made me interested in. When I picked one up, I couldn’t stop reading because the plots (情节) are just full of colors. Just as the saying goes, what we read makes us who we are. Peng Jiqi,16 YES! I began to read wuxia novels last winter vacation and was soon fascinated (着迷) by the brave adventures (冒险) of the characters created by Jin Yong. I’d imagine myself competing with others at the top of Mount Hua. These have given me long-lasting fun memories. Times may change, but chivalrousness (义) won’t. Wuxia novels, showing the kindness and courage of humans, will never die. Peng Zihao,15 NO! I like reading sci-fi (科幻) novels better than wuxia ones. Although I have read many wuxia novels like The Legend of the Condor Heroes (《射雕英雄传》), sci-fi novels suit me more. Wuxia novels have interesting plots and vivid characters, but they give me a feeling that they belong to an old time. In wuxia novels, the main characters are always the strongest and sometimes the stories are too far away from us. Li Chonglin,16 NO! I always say no to wuxia novels because they are full of silly fights. What I am interested in are suspense (悬疑) novels, especially the series of the medical examiner (法医), Dr Qin. Since I dream of being a medical examiner in the future, those stories are a good way for me to know something about the amazing job. Every time l read these novels, it’s totally a pleasant time for me. In short, it seems true that wuxia novels will disappear in recent years. For our new generation, many of us will choose other kinds of novels. 根据“digital devices also come with a large carbon footprint, mainly at the production stage.”可知,数字设备对环境影响最大的因素是其生产过程。故选C。 30.细节理解题。根据“If you buy an e-reader and you read lots of books on it, then it’s the lowest carbon thing to do”可知,如果你读很多书,那么选择数字阅读对环境更友好。故选A。 31.最佳标题题。通读全文可知,文章主要在讨论纸质书和电子阅读器哪个更环保的问题,因此,最合适的标题是“Which is Better for the Environment, Paper Books or E-readers?”。故选D。 C Ten years ago, many people thought that the age of print books was coming to an end. 根据第二段“But it seems not true. They aren’t a ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ thing.”可知,电子书将一直存在,不会是“今天有,明天就没有”的东西。因此,“here today, gone tomorrow”指的是短暂存在,即它会停留一段时间。故选D。 35.主旨大意题。根据最后一段“However, it’s clear that e-books are here to stay.
