Some people like the freedom of driving their own cars. But others find driving to be inconvenient or even dangerous. Fortunately, the driverless cars we see in movies and TV shows are on the way here.
The first driverless car to hit the screen was Herbie, a cute talking car from the 1968 comedy The Love Bug. Herbie could drive by himself and even talk to his human friends. He didn’t have any advanced technology—just magic.
KITT was another driverless car that appeared on the 1980s TV show Knight Rider. KITT used advanced AI to drive itself and help its rider Michael Knight catch criminals.
While the driverless cars of today can't talk to us, they do have many similarities (相似点) to the ones we see on screen. Nearly every major car company is working on their own autonomous vehicle (AV). Tesla, for example, has developed a driver-assistance system for its cars called Tesla Autopilot.
Tesla Autopilot can complete many of the tasks that human drivers usually do. It can make sure that your car is centred in the correct lane (车道), as well as park itself and stop if it thinks that a crash might happen. However, it is not fully self-driving.
Google’s sister company Waymo seems to be leading the way in the AV area. Its self-driving cars are already being used for taxi services in the US city of Phoenix. It is the only self-driving car service that operates without human backup drivers. It uses common cameras as well as laser radar to determine distance, which allows the cars to get around without risk of crashing.
Although companies are making great progress in developing AV, there is still a lot of work to be done. Year after year, companies promise that fully self-driving cars will become widely available. But nearly all of these promises have fallen through.
One of the problems is that designing a self-driving car that is safe and easy to use is much harder than people realize. Self-driving cars have to analyse (分析) millions of data points in order to prevent accidents and choose the correct route (路线). Humans are used to doing this—but designing an AI that can work like human mind to make a decision quickly is very difficult.
However, as new technologies like 5G develop, fully self-driving cars will come closer to reality.
32.What were Herbie and KITT?
A.They were interesting TV shows. B.They were driverless cars on screen.
C.They were cars using advanced AI. D.They were owners of driverless cars.
33.Tesla Autopilot can _________.
A.talk to his human friends clearly B.stop to avoid a crash happening
C.do all the tasks as human drivers D.fly for a short while if necessary
34.How might the future of the fully self-driving cars be according to the passage?
A.It will be too hard to design a self-driving car that is safe and easy to use.
B.Designing an AI that can make a decision like human mind is impossible.
C.Fully self-driving cars that are widely used must come to reality years later.
D.New technologies will speed up the development of fully self-driving cars.
35.It can be inferred (推断) from the passage that_________.
A.fully self-driving cars will be put into use in the future
B.self-driving cars have been widely used in our daily life
C.self-driving cars will be sold at much higher prices than now
D.fully self-driving cars that are safe and easy to use are available now

(an extract from Gulliver’s Travels)
I ran away from the huge living thing as fast as possible, and did not stop until I found myself in some fields. The grass was about seven metres high and the crops were about thirteen metres high. It took me an hour to cross just one field. The field had bushes at least forty metres high. ① The trees around were much taller. I was trying to find a hole in the bushes, so that I could get into the next field. I saw another huge man coming towards me. He seemed as tall as a mountain, and his feet were as long as about ten metres.
In great fear and surprise, I hid in the crops, and only hoped he would not notice me. ② He seemed to be a master and shouted in a voice like thunder. Then seven other huge men came here. The master asked them to cut down the crops in the field while I was hiding. As they moved towards me, I moved away, but at last I came to a part of the field without crops. There was not anywhere for me to hide, and I was afraid that the huge men would cut me into pieces with their knives. I lay down and prepared to die. I could not stop myself thinking of Lilliput. There, I myself was also a huge man and became famous for helping the people in that small country. ③ I began to understand how a very small living felt.
Suddenly, I noticed that one of the huge men was next to me. As his huge foot rose over my head, I screamed as loudly as I could. He looked around on the ground, and finally saw me. He looked at me for a moment, then very carefully, he picked me up with fingers and looked at me. I was now twenty metres up in the air, and I hoped he would not throw me to the ground. ④ I did nothing but spoke politely to him. Of course, I knew he did not understand any of my language. He took me to his master. They soon found that I was not an animal, but a smart living thing. The master carefully put me in his pocket and took me home to show to his wife. When she saw me, she screamed and jumped back in fear, maybe thinking I was an insect. But after a couple of days, she became used to me, and was very kind to me.

Villages in China have enjoyed their development in a digital (数字的) way in recent years. With the help of digital technology, villagers are living an easier and happier life.
Farming in the past was not an easy job. Farmers worked hard all year round. At the same time, they usually found it difficult to solve problems like plant diseases and pests (害虫). Now, there have been big changes in farming. For example, in Dayi County, Sichuan Province, there are 13 digital farms with AI machines. These machines help local farmers know when and how to fertilize (施肥) and kill pests. In this way, they make farmers work more easily with less time and energy.
Thanks to the Internet, a new business called rural e-commerce (乡村电子商务) grows. Selling fresh fruit and vegetables to cities is faster. In the past, it was hard for people in cities to know what villagers planted. Now, they can buy easily over the phones. The business also helps villagers live a digital life. They can get many things done on different kinds of apps. They can also use drones (无人机) to help with their farm work.
More visitors travel in beautiful villages because of digital technology. A good example is Huacheng Town, Guangdong Province. To let more people know its culture and attract more visitors, it turns into a “digital town”. Visitors can know where to park their cars for free, when to book a ticket easily and what to buy online. They can also enjoy the view of nearly every part of the town by using VR.
