Slowly the beast lifts its head and its thick trunk delicately curls around the leaves of a nearby tree, pulling out the leaves and politely slipping them into its mouth. The beast’s great grey skin is partly broken and aged from the African sun. Some mud drops on one side from its last trip to a nearby river. Its rough hair sticks out from all over its skin and two large, white tusks curve elegantly from either side of its mouth. Somewhere a lion roars and something else gives a loud high shout. A vulture (秃鹫) drifts over far above this world, barely a black dot in the sky. The buzzing of the countless bush insects seems to collectively shift up in high tune, almost like the whole of the savanna (热带草原) was singing some song that only they knew. I peer through the lens (镜头) at this scene. The zoom lens shows almost every detail of the elephant: the three small cuts in its left ear from playing as a baby around thorn trees, the scar down its front leg where a lion caught it unaware as a young adult, and weathering on its great, valuable tusks from decades of living in this unforgiving grassland on a dusty continent. And then the elephant looks at me. It looks at me with those big, eyelashed eyes with a warmth coming outwards from a vast, hidden depth there. I can suddenly feel its soul, and feel the line of elephants that came before this one, trailing back to the very beginnings of this great savanna. We will never understand what wonders this ancient being and its kind have seen and whispered to each other across the ages on this old, sacred grassland. It looks at me, and it looks through me and sees me. The elephant knows I am there. It always did. It is not running away, nor is it fighting. It accepts and forgives. It loves. But, mostly, it just feels sad. It feels sorry for me. I cannot do this anymore. I take my eye off the sights and hand the gun back to my partner. “Let’s go home,” I said in a quiet voice, “let’s just go home.” 24.According to the first two paragraphs, which word can best describe the elephant? A.Mysterious. B.Depressed. C.Aggressive. D.Graceful. 25.When the author sees through the lens, he is . A.deeply moved and filled with sympathy B.overwhelmed by the elephant’s strength C.annoyed at the presence of other animals D.shocked and scared by the elephant’s scars 26.What does the author intend to do initially? A.Take a picture. B.Observe the elephant. C.Hunt the elephant. D.Study African grassland. 27.What can we learn from the passage? A.Nature calms our anger. B.Nature purifies our souls. C.Nature heals our wounds. D.Nature enriches our imagination. 根据第一段中“Slowly the beast lifts its head and its thick trunk delicately curls around the leaves of a nearby tree, pulling out the leaves and politely slipping them into its mouth.( 它慢慢地抬起头,它粗壮的鼻子巧妙地卷曲在附近一棵树的叶子上,把叶子抽出来,礼貌地塞进嘴里)”以及第二段中“Its rough hair sticks out from all over its skin and two large, white tusks curve elegantly from either side of its mouth.( 它粗糙的毛发从皮肤上伸出来,两根巨大的白色象牙从嘴的两侧优雅地弯曲着)”可推知,根据前两段内容,大象的动作是优雅的。故选D项。 25. 根据第四段“I peer through the lens (镜头) at this scene. The zoom lens shows almost every detail of the elephant: the three small cuts in its left ear from playing as a baby around thorn trees, the scar down its front leg where a lion caught it unaware as a young adult, and weathering on its great, valuable tusks from decades of living in this unforgiving grassland on a dusty continent.( 我透过镜头看这个场景。变焦镜头几乎展示了这头大象的每一个细节:它的左耳上有三个小伤口,这是它小时候在荆棘树下玩耍时留下的,它的前腿上有一个伤疤,那是它年轻时被狮子在不知道的情况下抓住的,它那又大又珍贵的象牙上有几十年生活在这片尘土飞扬的大陆上无情的草原上的风化)”以及第六段中“It looks at me with those big, eyelashed eyes with a warmth coming outwards from a vast, hidden depth there. I can suddenly feel its soul, and feel the line of elephants that came before this one, trailing back to the very beginnings of this great savanna.( 它用那双长着睫毛的大眼睛看着我,从那巨大而隐蔽的深处发出一种温暖。我能突然感受到它的灵魂,感受到在这头大象之前的大象群,一直追溯到这片大草原的起源)”可推知,当作者透过镜头看的时候,他是深深感动并充满同情。故选A项。 26. 根据最后一段“I take my eye off the sights and hand the gun back to my partner. “Let’s go home,” I said in a quiet voice, “let’s just go home.”(我把视线从瞄准具上移开,把枪还给了我的搭档。“我们回家吧,”我轻声说,“我们就回家吧。”)”可推知,作者最初打算猎杀大象。故选C项。 27.推理判断题。根据文章大意,尤其第六段中“I can suddenly feel its soul, and feel the line of elephants that came before this one, trailing back to the very beginnings of this great savanna. We will never understand what wonders this ancient being and its kind have seen and whispered to each other across the ages on this old, sacred grassland.( 我能突然感受到它的灵魂,感受到在这头大象之前的大象群,一直追溯到这片大草原的起源。我们永远无法理解,在这片古老而神圣的草原上,这只古老的生物和它的同类在多少世纪以来看到了什么奇迹,并彼此低语着什么)”和最后一段“I take my eye off the sights and hand the gun back to my partner. “Let’s go home,” I said in a quiet voice, “let’s just go home.”(我把视线从瞄准具上移开,把枪还给了我的搭档。“我们回家吧,”我轻声说,“我们就回家吧。”)”可推知,我们能从文章中领悟到自然可以净化我们的灵魂。故选B项。 C One day in the fall of 2023, a young Atlantic yellow-nosed albatross was lying listless in southeastern Brazil’s Santos Basin. Beach monitors found the young bird in the sand, weak and dying. The cause of the albatross’s disaster was evident: it was caught in a weather balloon, which, sadly, is just one instance of a bigger environmental headache. Globally, hundreds of thousands of weather balloons are launched into the sky every year, and the majority are never recovered. Instead, their waste—a mix of latex, cotton and plastics — remains in marine (海洋的) ecosystems for years. And because only a small percentage of dead animals wash ashore, the impact is likely worse than the numbers suggest. The root of this mounting trouble lies in the very nature of how weather balloons operate. Weather balloons are used to get high-altitude (高空) data like air temperature and pressure. Once a balloon has travelled up about 21 miles and its volume has grown 100-fold, it explodes, shooting pieces in all directions. Australian researchers at the Tangaroa Blue Foundation first flagged the problem of weather-balloon garbage a decade ago. Over 21 months, they collected 2,460 pieces of weather-balloon litter around the Great Barrier Reef. The researchers estimated that up to 70 percent of Australia’ s weather balloons end up in the ocean. One study notes that while some of the materials used in weather balloons are considered biodegradable, much of it is not breaking down quickly. Some companies have produced special materials now made from plant-based fiber designed to weaken much faster than previous cotton versions. But the new models are 20 to 30 percent more expensive. Despite the higher cost, weather bureaus (局) have started to reduce the impact by trying out more sustainable balloons and switching from white to blue balloons, which marine animals may be less likely to mistake for food. Some agencies also announced they would be testing drones (无人机) to collect weather data, which are recoverable. Weather agencies aren’t trialing these new devices only because they’ re more sustainable; they also want better data. For now, though, balloons still fly much higher than drones, so they remain an important data-collecting tool. Lower-impact versions would at least be a small improvement for the ocean’s animals. 28.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? A.The functions of weather balloons. B.The problems of using weather balloons. C.The composition of weather balloon waste. D.The difficulty of weather balloon recycling. 29.What can we learn about weather balloons? A.Weather balloon waste can hardly break down. B.New versions of weather balloons are being tried. C.Weather balloons cause the death of most sea animals. D.Drones are better in collecting data than weather balloons. 30.What does the author think of the changes mentioned in the passage? A.Valuable but risky. B.Exciting and hopeful. C.Necessary and reliable. D.Promising but incomplete. 根据第二段“Globally, hundreds of thousands of weather balloons are launched into the sky every year, and the majority are never recovered. Instead, their waste — a mix of latex, cotton and plastics — remains in marine (海洋的) ecosystems for years. And because only a small percentage of dead animals wash ashore, the impact is likely worse than the numbers suggest.(在全球范围内,每年有数十万个气象气球被发射到天空中,其中大多数都没有被回收。相反,它们的废物——乳胶、棉花和塑料的混合物——会在海洋生态系统中留存多年。由于只有一小部分死亡动物被冲上岸,因此影响可能比数字所显示的更严重)”可知,本段主要讲述使用气象气球导致的问题。故选B项。 29.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Some companies have produced special materials now made from plant-based fiber designed to weaken much faster than previous cotton versions. But the new models are 20 to 30 percent more expensive. Despite the higher cost, weather bureaus (局) have started to reduce the impact by trying out more sustainable balloons and switching from white to blue balloons, which marine animals may be less likely to mistake for food.(一些公司已经生产出由植物纤维制成的特殊材料,这种材料比以前的棉质材料更容易变弱。但是新型号要贵20%到30%。尽管成本更高,但气象部门已经开始尝试使用更可持续的气球,并将白色气球换成蓝色气球,以减少海洋动物误以为食物的可能性)”可知,新版本的气象气球正在试验中。故选B项。 30.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Weather agencies aren’t trialing these new devices only because they’ re more sustainable; they also want better data. For now, though, balloons still fly much higher than drones, so they remain an important data-collecting tool. Lower-impact versions would at least be a small improvement for the ocean’s animals.(气象机构试用这些新设备并不仅仅是因为它们更可持续;他们也想要更好的数据。但就目前而言,气球仍然比无人机飞得高得多,因此它们仍然是重要的数据收集工具。对海洋动物来说,低影响的版本至少是一个小小的改善)”可推知,作者认为目前的改变是有希望的但还不完善。故选D项。 D According to an idea called the “inflationary (暴胀的) multiverse”, the universe has been constantly expanding, which would have created a countless number of other universes. Collectively, these cosmic islands form what scientists call a “multiverse”. However, other universes may lie beyond our scientific reach, physically and philosophically. Consequently, the methodologies by which physicists might validate (验证) the multiverse and whether such validation is even possible remain unresolved inquiries. In science, hypotheses (假说) are used to propose explanations, but from hypotheses to theories, validation of predictions is essential to see whether initial assumptions are supported or disproved. Theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli says, “It is hard to write theories that survive the proof of reality. Few survive thanks to a basic idea: Do not trust your fancies. Keep only the ideas that can be tested.” Rovelli adds, “Today many physicists are wasting time trying to guess and jumping to conclusions. This approach has never worked previously, and it is not working now.” The multiverse might be one of those wild guesses. Now, physicists are debating whether that problem moves the multiverse from physics to metaphysics, from the world of science to that of philosophy. Philosopher Richard Dawid believes scientists could support the multiverse hypotheses without actually finding physical support. “If we have a theory that seems to work, and have come up with nothing that works better, chances are our idea is right,” he says. Not everyone is so cheerful, though. Sabine Hossenfelder, another theoretical physicist, thinks “Without making contact with observation, a theory isn’t part of the natural sciences, and not physics.” Some supporters of the multiverse claim they have found physical evidence. Andrei Linde insists “Our universe seems fine-tuned (精调的) to be favourable to life, with a four-dimensional space in which we can live. It is certain that in an eternally inflating multiverse, one of the universes should turn out like ours. Each universe can have different physical laws and fundamentals. Given limitless changes, a universe on which humans can be born will be born. The multiverse actually explains why we’re here. And our existence, therefore, helps explain why the multiverse is plausible.” Just as Einstein’s theory of general relativity could only be confirmed recently with a billion-dollar instrument called LIGO, scientists may eventually discover more direct evidence of the multiverse. So far, all of science has relied on testability, but those tests take time, and most theoreticians want to wait it out. They are not ready to shelve an idea like the multiverse — which could actually be the answer to life, the universe and everything — until and unless they can prove to themselves it doesn’t exist. And that day may never come. 31.What can we learn from the passage? A.The multiverse is recognized as a theory. B.The multiverse starts debates on human existence. C.Rovelli criticizes physicists for their baseless fancies. D.Dawid emphasizes the necessity of physical evidence. 32.What does the underlined word “plausible” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A.Credible. B.Complex. C.Essential. D.Fascinating. 33.As for the existence of multiverse, the author is _________. A.negative B.neutral C.certain D.positive 34.Which would be the best title for this passage? A.Mysteries of Multiverse: Fine-Tuned for Life B.Can Physicists Ever Prove the Multiverse Is Real? C.The Inflationary Multiverse: Proven Beyond Doubt D.Have Physicists Lost Their Minds in the Multiverse? 根据第二段“Theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli says, “It is hard to write theories that survive the proof of reality. Few survive thanks to a basic idea: Do not trust your fancies. Keep only the ideas that can be tested.” Rovelli adds, “Today many physicists are wasting time trying to guess and jumping to conclusions. This approach has never worked previously, and it is not working now.” The multiverse might be one of those wild guesses.(理论物理学家Carlo Rovelli说:“很难写出经得起现实证明的理论。很少有理论能幸存下来,这要归功于一个基本的理念:不要相信你的幻想。只保留那些可以被测试的想法。”Rovelli补充道:“今天,许多物理学家都在浪费时间去猜测和草率下结论。这种方法以前从未奏效,现在也行不通。”多元宇宙可能是这些大胆的猜测之一)”可知,罗维利批评物理学家毫无根据的幻想(包括多元宇宙),认为真正的理论需要现实上经得起被测试。故选C。 32.词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“It is certain that in an eternally inflating multiverse, one of the universes should turn out like ours. Each universe can have different physical laws and fundamentals. Given limitless changes, a universe on which humans can be born will be born. The multiverse actually explains why we’re here.(可以肯定的是,在一个永远膨胀的多元宇宙中,其中一个宇宙应该和我们的宇宙一样。每个宇宙都有不同的物理定律和基本原理。鉴于无限的变化,一个人类可以诞生的宇宙将会诞生。多元宇宙实际上解释了我们为什么在这里)”以及“And our existence, therefore, helps explain why the multiverse is(因此,我们的存在有助于解释为什么多元宇宙……)” 故选A。 33. 根据最后一段“Just as Einstein’s theory of general relativity could only be confirmed recently with a billion-dollar instrument called LIGO, scientists may eventually discover more direct evidence of the multiverse.(正如爱因斯坦的广义相对论直到最近才被价值数十亿美元的LIGO仪器证实一样,科学家们最终可能会发现多元宇宙的更直接证据)”和“They are not ready to shelve an idea like the multiverse — which could actually be the answer to life, the universe and everything — until and unless they can prove to themselves it doesn’t exist. And that day may never come.(他们还没有准备好搁置像多元宇宙这样的想法——它实际上可能是生命、宇宙和一切的答案——除非他们能证明它不存在。这一天可能永远不会到来)”可知,对于多元宇宙的存在,作者是肯定的态度。故选D。 34.主旨大意题。根据第一段“According to an idea called the “inflationary (暴胀的) multiverse”, the universe has been constantly expanding, which would have created a countless number of other universes. Collectively, these cosmic islands form what scientists call a “multiverse”. However, other universes may lie beyond our scientific reach, physically and philosophically. Consequently, the methodologies by which physicists might validate (验证) the multiverse and whether such validation is even possible remain unresolved inquiries.(根据一种被称为“暴胀多元宇宙”的观点,宇宙一直在不断膨胀,这将创造出无数的其他宇宙。 Don’t Let Personality Types Define You Personality tests, especially the Myers-Briggs type indicator(MBT), are popular tools that many people use to better understand themselves and their relationships with others. MBTI sorts people into 16 different personality types based on four key categories. Although these tests can provide useful insights, it’s important not to let them define or limit you. 35 . But people are complex. Our personalities can change over time, depending on experiences and growth. What the MBTI test reveals is just a snapshot of one’s preferences, not a complete definition of who you are. For example, if the test labels you as an “introvert” (性格内向的人), you may feel tempted to avoid social communication because you think it’s not in your nature to be outgoing. But you might find that your ability to enjoy social events increases over time. The key is not to accept the label as an unchangeable fact. 36 Similarly, if you are categorized as a “thinking” type, it might lead you to believe that you are always rational 37 Emotional response is also an essential part of human nature, and embracing them can enhance your decision-making process and relationships. Additionally, many people get caught up in the idea that their “type” limits their careers or personal choices. They might think, for instance, that an “introvert” would not be a good leader. 38 . Many introverts achieve success through careful listening and thoughtful decision-making. Don’t let de MBTI label stop you from pursuing opportunities that feel right for you. Finally, one of the most important lessons we can learn from the MBTI is that we are not defined by one test or label. 39 . By focusing on our strengths and embracing the full complexity of our personalities, we can lead richer and more fulfilling lives. We are all more than the labels we receive. A.The reality is quite different. B.The test results should be seen as a guide, not a limitation. C.The MBTI system provides a simple way to categorize individuals based on their preferences. D.But there are countless examples of introverts excelling in these types of roles. E.You should see it as a starting point for self-reflection and growth. F.However, it’s essential to understand that both parts of the personality are valuable. G.The MBTI system can sometimes prevent individuals from realizing their full potential. 35.由上文“Personality tests, especially the Myers-Briggs type indicator (MBTI), are popular tools that many people use to better understand themselves and their relationships with others. MBTI sorts people into 16 different personality types based on four key categories.(人格测试,尤其是迈尔斯-布里格斯类型指标(MBTI),是许多人用来更好地了解自己和与他人关系的流行工具。MBTI根据四个关键类别将人们分为16种不同的人格类型。)”可知,这里介绍了 MBTI 这种人格测试会将人按四个关键类别分为 16 种不同人格类型,空格处需要对其分类情况进一步说明来衔接后文,且后文“But people are complex.(但人是复杂的。)”进行转折,而C项“The MBTI system provides a simple way to categorize individuals based on their preferences.(MBTI系统提供了一种根据个人偏好对其进行分类的简单方法。)” 36.由上文“The key is not to accept the label as an unchangeable fact.(关键是不要接受标签是不可改变的事实。)”可知, 这里强调不要把标签当作不可改变的事实,空格处要进一步说明对待测试结果应有的正确做法,而E项“You should see it as a starting point for self-reflection and growth.(你应该把它看作是自我反思和成长的起点。)” 37.由上文“Similarly, if you are categorized as a ‘thinking’ type, it might lead you to believe that you are always rational.(同样地,如果你被归类为‘思考’型,这可能会让你认为自己总是理性的。)”可知,这里提及被归为某类型后的片面认知,空格后“Emotional response is also an essential part of human nature, and embracing them can enhance your decision-making process and relationships.(情感反应也是人性的重要组成部分,接纳它们可以增强你的决策过程和人际关系。)” 强调情感的重要性,而F 项“However, it’s essential to understand that both parts of the personality are valuable.(然而,重要的是要明白人格的这两部分都是有价值的。)” 38.由上文“They might think, for instance, that an ‘introvert’ would not be a good leader.(例如,他们可能认为内向的人不会成为好的领导者。)” 表明内向者也能成功,而D项“But there are countless examples of introverts excelling in these types of roles.(但有无数内向者在这些角色中表现出色的例子。)” 39.由上文“Finally, one of the most important lessons we can learn from the MBTI is that we are not defined by one test or label. (最后,我们可以从MBTI中学到的最重要的教训之一是,我们不是由一个测试或标签来定义的。)”可知,这里说明不能被测试或标签定义,空格处要进一步说明对测试结果的正确看法,而B项“The test results should be seen as a guide, not a limitation.(测试结果应该被看作是一种指导,而不是一种限制。)”指出应把测试结果当作指导而非限制,与后文“By focusing on our strengths and embracing the full complexity of our personalities, we can lead richer and more fulfilling lives.(通过关注我们的优势并接纳我们个性的全部复杂性,我们可以过上更丰富、更充实的生活。)” Your Life Is Better Than You Think The undeniable popularity of self-help books, wellness podcasts, and happiness workshops reflects the constant human desire to make life better. But could it be that many of our lives are already better than we recognize? While we may have a loving family, a good place to live, and a decent job, we often fail to notice those things. It’s not because we are ungrateful or stupid, but it’s because of a basic feature of our brain, known as habituation. Habituation is the tendency of neurons to fire less and less in response to things that are constant. You enter a room filled with roses and after a short while, you cannot detect their scent any longer; and just as you get used to the smell of fresh flowers, you also get used to a loving relationship, to a promotion, to a nice home, to a wonderful work of art. Like the front page of a daily newspaper, your brain cares about what recently changed, not about what remained the same. And so, what once took your breath away becomes part of life’s furniture. You habituate to it — you fail to notice and respond to elements of your life which you previously found amazing. The good news is that you can dishabituate. That is, you can suddenly start perceiving and responding to things to which you have become desensitized. The key is taking small breaks from your daily life. For example, when people return home from a long business trip, they often find their old life has “reshined.” Ordinary things suddenly seem amazing. If something is constant, we often assume (perhaps unconsciously)that it is there to stay, and as a result, we focus our attention and effort on the next thing on our list. But if we can make the constant less so, our attention will naturally turn back to it. If it is good at its core, it may just reshine. This is why time away, however short, will enable you to perceive your life with fresh eyes — and to break up reality. 40.Why do we often fail to notice the good things in our lives? 41.What is the key to dishabituating? 42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. If something is constant and good at its core, it will reshine and we may focus our attention and effort on it. 43.Besides taking a long trip, what else can make us perceive our lives with fresh eyes? (In about 40 words) 【答案】40.Because of a basic feature of our brain, known as habituation. 41.The key is taking small breaks from the daily life. 42.If something is constant and good at its core, it will reshine and we may focus our attention and effort on it. If we make the constant less so, we may focus our attention and effort on it. If it is good at its core, it will reshine. 43.1)We can rearrange the furniture, redecorate a room, or even move to a new place. A change in our environment can have a significant impact on our mood and perspective, which can make us see our lives from a new angle and inspire us to try new things. 2)Whether it’s a new language, a musical instrument, or a sport, learning something new engages our minds and forces us to see the world from a different perspective. As we struggle and progress in mastering the skill, we gain a sense of accomplishment and a new appreciation for our own capabilities. 根据第二段“It’s not because we are ungrateful or stupid, but it’s because of a basic feature of our brain, known as habituation.(这并不是因为我们忘恩负义或愚蠢,而是因为我们大脑的一个基本特征,即习惯化)”可知,我们常常忽视生活中的美好事物是因为我们大脑的一个基本特征,即习惯化。 Because of a basic feature of our brain, known as habituation. 41. 根据最后一段“The key is taking small breaks from your daily life.(关键是在日常生活中稍作休息)”可知,改变习惯的关键是在日常生活中稍作休息。 The key is taking small breaks from the daily life. 42. If something is constant, we often assume (perhaps unconsciously)that it is there to stay, and as a result, we focus our attention and effort on the next thing on our list. But if we can make the constant less so, our attention will naturally turn back to it. If it is good at its core, it may just reshine.(普通的东西突然变得很神奇。如果某件事是固定不变的,我们通常会假设(也许是无意识地)它会一直存在,因此,我们会把注意力和精力集中在清单上的下一件事上。但是,如果我们能使这个常数变得不那么重要,我们的注意力自然就会回到它身上。如果它的核心是好的,它可能会重新发光)”可知,错误的部分是“If something is constant,”原因是:如果我们把不变的东西变得不那么重要,我们就可以把注意力和精力集中在它上面。如果它的核心是好的,它就会重新发光。故答案为If something is constant and good at its core, it will reshine and we may focus our attention and effort on it. If we make the constant less so, we may focus our attention and effort on it. If it is good at its core, it will reshine. 43. 1)We can rearrange the furniture, redecorate a room, or even move to a new place. Dear Jim, ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 【答案】Dear Jim, I’m glad to hear that you’ re interested in the photography exhibition held in our school last week. C One day in the fall of 2023, a young Atlantic yellow-nosed albatross was lying listless in southeastern Brazil’s Santos Basin. D According to an idea called the “inflationary (暴胀的) multiverse”, the universe has been constantly expanding, which would have created a countless number of other universes. Don’t Let Personality Types Define You Personality tests, especially the Myers-Briggs type indicator(MBT), are popular tools that many people use to better understand themselves and their relationships with others. Your Life Is Better Than You Think The undeniable popularity of self-help books, wellness podcasts, and happiness workshops reflects the constant human desire to make life better. Don’t Let Personality Types Define You Personality tests, especially the Myers-Briggs type indicator(MBT), are popular tools that many people use to better understand themselves and their relationships with others. Your Life Is Better Than You Think The undeniable popularity of self-help books, wellness podcasts, and happiness workshops reflects the constant human desire to make life better.
