One of Coca-Cola’s many slogans (标语) was “You can’t beat the real thing”. The company was trying to say that there were a lot of other drinks, but none of them was as good as the “real” Coke.
You may not agree. But when it comes to art, scientists in the Netherlands think it’s true—you can’t beat the real thing.
Martin de Munnik, a member of the Neurensis Research (研究) Company, did a research with other members. They invited 20 volunteers to take part in it in the Mauritshuis Museum. Researchers showed five real artworks to them. While they were looking at the artworks, a special machine recorded their brain (大脑) activities.
Then these volunteers needed to look at the pictures of the same five artworks as before. The researchers compared (比较) their brain activities when they were looking at the real artworks and the pictures. The research showed that when volunteers were looking at the real artworks, their emotional responses (情绪反应) were 10 times stronger than those when they were looking at the pictures.
The researchers said the responses were quite different. Real artworks made the brain much more excited than pictures of the same artworks did. The real art caused a strong emotional response in a part of the brain called the precuneus. This part of the brain is about feelings and memories.
Erik Scherder, a famous scientist, said the research showed the importance of museums for people of all ages. “It shows what the real artwork does for your brain when you see it closely,” he said. “Museums can make people have such rich feelings that everyone can get a lot from them.”

Jan walked past the door but they weren’t talking about the book. They were talking about the new family at the house down the road.
“What do you want for breakfast?” Jan’s mum asks without looking up from her book. Jan doesn’t answer. She always has the same thing for breakfast: a glass of fruit juice, some toast and jam, and an apple. She eats her toast and jam, drinks the juice, and takes a bite of the apple.
“Bye, mum.”
“Bye, darling. Have a good day at school.”
Jan walks to school. She usually walks to the end of the road and then goes up the hill, through the centre of town to PPC. School starts at 8:45 with morning assembly. Today is Friday, the best day of the week. Jan likes Fridays because she has all her favourite classes — English, Art, Spanish, and then History.
“So…?” Mrs. Zinger, the History teacher, looks at her students.
“How many of you completed your project and made a time capsule?”
Jan holds up her hand and looks around. No one in the class has their hand up. Oh no! Is she the only one who made the time capsule? Mrs. Zinger smiles.

76.例文
Dear Chairperson,
I would like to join Zhenjiang Wildlife Protection Society. My name is Li Ming.
I’m in Class One Grade Eight. I’m a kind boy and I once saved a cat from a snowstorm. I like animals and pandas are my favorite. They are so cute and can make my heart full of warmth.
However, animals are facing serious problems now because their living areas are becoming smaller and smaller. In addition, natural disasters happen often because of the changeable weather. As a result, animals have nowhere to live or food to eat. Also, some people catch them for fun. What a shame!
It’s time for us to do something more for them now. I will ask my mother not to buy clothes made of animals’ fur any more. I plan to write to the government to ask them to make laws to protect the environment. As a student, I can also make some posters to let others know the importance of nature. I’ll be very happy if I can be a member of the society. You can call me on 0511-8823678 or email me at liming@zhenjiang.com.
Yours sincerely,
Li Ming
