Here’s how to make a model submarine (潜水艇) that dives and comes up from underwater like a real one.
You’ll need
Plastic bottle; Tape (胶带); Four coins; Thin rubber or plastic tube (管子); Waterproof modeling clay (防水黏土)—not real clay, which dissolves (溶解) in water; Small scissors; Tub (盆).
You’ll follow
1. Cut two small holes on one side of the bottle. Tape coins to that side of the bottle. Remove cap; seal (密封) the tube to the bottle with clay.
2. Fill tub with water; put bottle in and let it fill with water.
3. Gently blow into the tube and watch what happens. Stop blowing and close the tube with your thumb. Lift your thumb and watch what hap pens.
You’ll see
When you blow, air pushes out water; the bottle becomes lighter and rises.
Bottle sinks when it fills with water and coins weight it down.
Coins keep holes pointing downward, so air does not escape.
When you stop blowing and seal the tube with your thumb, the bottle floats. Lift your thumb, air escapes through the tube and the bottle sinks.
A real submarine works this way, by filling tanks with air or water.
1. The materials that make a model submarine are the following EXCEPT ________.
A. a plastic tube B. four coins C. real clay
2. The way to make the bottle sink is to ________.

During Spring Festival, netizens hotly debated whether parents should be in charge of the lucky money their children receive for the new year. Do you think parents should look after their children’s lucky money?
Xu Shayuan, 16
I think it’s a good idea for lucky money to be kept by parents because children generally don’t have much experience with money and are most likely to spend money like water and potentially waste it.
By comparison, lucky money left in the trust of their parents will be better spent, as children need to think carefully before asking for permission to use the money to make a purchase.
Hong Hanshu, 16
It is too difficult for young children to manage their money wisely as there are so many distractions (干扰) out there. With large amounts of money, they may become a victim (受害者) of cyber fraud (诈骗) or fall into the habit of splashing out (挥霍). By entrusting the money to their parents, not only will they raise their awareness of saving, but they will also appreciate the best wishes behind the money and put it to better use.
Xu Leyan, 16
I think children should keep their own lucky money because it’s a good chance to help them develop good money management skills. In doing so, children will be able to learn how to save money and arrange their expenses (费用) reasonably. To that end, all parents should do is keep their kids spending in check and give them timely guidance. Early money management education is an important lesson, which can help children become more mature and rational (理性的).
Yang Shiqi, 16
In the latest Civil Code (民法典), 8 years old is a dividing line between restricted capacity (限制行为能力) and incapacity. That means that children older than 8 have the right to deal with their own money and be responsible for the consequences (结果) of their consumer behavior as well. Children should be trusted to manage their own money and learn lessons the hard way if necessary. With parents’ practical advice, they can both learn to manage money and become financially independent early in life.
4. Which students think that parents should manage their children’s lucky money?
A. Hong Hanshu and Xu Leyan.
B. Xu Shuyuan and Yang Shiqi.
C. Xu Shuyuan and Hong Hanshu.
5. According to Hong Hanshu, what things might cause young children to waste their lucky money?
a Cyber fraud. b. Bad habits. c. Bad advice from friends. d. Too much lucky money.
A. ad B. ab C. cd
6. What can we infer from Yang Shiqi’s words?
A. It’s okay for children to make mistakes while managing their own lucky money.
B. It’s against the law for parents to manage their children’s lucky money.
C. Parents must give all children older than 8 their lucky money.
7. According to the passage, all students agree that ________.
A. parents should help their children to deal with their lucky money
B. all children over 8 years old can manage their lucky money well
C. it is hard for children to manage their lucky money
C
Recently, scientists have developed a new artificial intelligence technology that can detect (识别) whether someone is lying by analyzing (分析) the muscles (肌肉) in their face.
Patches (贴片) placed on a person’s face detect muscle activity and then machine learning technology is used. The machine can calculate whether or not the person has been telling lies. Invented by Yael Hanein at Tel Aviv University in Israel, the machine showed a success rate of 73 percent, implying it can catch liars easily.
According to researchers from the University of British Columbia, Canada, some of the muscles on our faces change “behavior” when we are lying. Liars usually raise their eyebrows. They also blink a lot and hold their eyes closed for longer. Closing the eyes is a way to buy time for the liar so that they can better perfect their story.
Liars often blush (脸红). Blood flows into the cheeks as they become nervous about the truth possibly being revealed (揭露).
Liars also have fake smiles. A real smile often causes the eyes to light up or become smaller. This is because more muscles are used when we are happy. A fake smile is often accompanied by “dead” eyes instead.
8. What is the purpose of developing the new artificial intelligence technology?
A. To understand facial expressions.
B. To tell whether someone is lying.
C. To control muscle activities.
9. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The success rate. B. The patch. C. The machine.
10. What are the last three paragraphs mainly about?
A. How researchers did their study.
B. Reasons for detecting lies.
C. People’s behaviors while they are lying.
11. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Finding lies with new artificial intelligence.
B. Telling lies makes people nervous.
C. Lying with muscles in the face.
