One evening last summer, when I asked my 14-year-old son, Jack, to help with dinner, his question shocked me. “What is a colander (漏勺)?” he asked.
Nobody else could cook for the family except my own! But that night, as I explained that a colander is the thing with holes in it, I knew what else I should had taught Jack. As a mother, while I cared about my son’s grades and characters, I always forgot that I should also raise someone’s future roommate, boyfriend, husband, or father. I just raised a boy who would always ask his mother, “What’s for dinner?” So I came up with a plan: I would open a housework course for Jack. I was glad to find that he didn’t say no.
For two hours, three days a week, Jack was all mine. One day, as his tomato sauce reduced on the stove, he washed and seasoned a chicken for roasting. Then he rolled out the piecrust (馅饼皮) and filled it with apples, all while listening to my explanation on the importance of preheating an oven. I knew that he would like to play basketball, but he had to mend socks with his mother—he tried to stop the sewing lessons, but I refused him.
“I appreciate what you do as a mom,” he told me one day.
Now, not only can he make his own dinner, but also he can make a big meal for his family. That’s what I call a man. I’m glad that I prepared a great gift for my future daughter-in-law (儿媳).
24. Why was the author shocked at her son’s question?
A.Because he disagreed to help with dinner.
B.Because he was ready to help.
C.Because he didn’t even know what a colander is.
25. The author realized that she should ________ that night.
A.care more about her son’s grades
B.build up her son’s healthy characters
C.do something for Jack’s future life
26. After learning to do housework, Jack ________.
A.did all the housework for his family
B.understood why his mom made him do that
C.could do better in his study

A.A Hard Course B.The Importance of Cooking C.A Mom’s Role
【答案】24. C 25. C 26. B 27. A

Dear Li Lei,
My sister practices playing the violin in an after-school class, so my parents asked me to go and learn it too. But I’m just not a music girl. You know, I’m interested in sports and I want to choose what I like. Now, I’m so upset. What should I do?
Anna
Dear Anna,
I understand your feeling. Here is what I think.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I hope what I said is helpful to you.
Li Lei
Dear Anna,
I understand your feeling. Here is what I think. Maybe your parents won’t know how you feel if you don’t talk to them about it. Why not honestly and kindly let them know music and you are never a good match, but sports and you are made for each other? Meanwhile, you’d better tell them you have had a clear life goal and are old enough to make your own decisions. Further-more, try to get a proper chance to prove that you are talented in sports. Only then will they know you better and let you choose what you love to do. I’m sure your parents will be up for helping you explore different options.
I hope what I said is helpful to you.
Li Lei

27. What would be the best title (标题) for the passage?
A.A Hard Course B.The Importance of Cooking C.A Mom’s Role
