As we enjoyed our trip in Paris, I noticed that the people we came across were helpful, kind and nice. One day, an employee from a burger place across the street from our hotel noticed my Cleveland Cavaliers cap. We struck up a conversation about basketball and he encouraged me to visit his establishment.
The next day we stopped there — a snack bar, and the guy that I talked to wasn’t there. Overall, there was room for about a dozen people to eat in the place. The guy that was taking my order spoke a little English, just enough for me to understand. Midway through my attempt to place my order, he apologized that his English wasn’t very good. I thought for a split second and responded “et mon francais est très mal!”
He froze for a moment and the look on his face was priceless. It was some combination (混合) of shock, surprise, being impressed and a little amusement. He shook my hand and said “okay, okay that’s good! ”
It was just a small connection with someone on the other side of the world, someone I’ll probably never see again. But for that instant there was a cool connection between two people, both understanding that speaking other languages wasn’t easy! Both appreciating each other’s effort to communicate in a way that the other person would understand, no matter how bad our attempts were.
Later I found that my direct translation wasn’t exactly what I intended. I didn’t find that out until much later! I was attempting to say “and my French is very bad”, what came out instead was “and my French is very wrong”. That was so much better because I just proved my point even more without knowing it.
Perhaps the best part of the story is that the burger that I got was the best burger that I’ve ever had in my life! I still dream about that burger and laugh every time I think about going to that burger spot.
24.What does the author think of their trip in Paris?
A.Pleasant. B.Hard. C.Adventurous. D.Embarrassing.
25.How did the guy respond when he first heard the author’s poor French?
A.He felt funny. B.He felt angry.
C.He was amazed. D.He was indifferent.
26.What value is the author trying to promote through the story?
A.Willingness and courage. B.Kindness and adventure.
C.Forgiveness and generosity. D.Understanding and respect.
27.What does the author want to express in the last paragraph?
A.He likes eating burger best. B.He speaks highly of that snack bar.
C.He is impressed by the snack bar trip. D.He dreams to visit the snack bar again.

A recent study found walking 10,000 steps a day lowered the risk for dementia (痴呆) by 50%; the risk decreased by 25% with as few as 3,800 steps a day. However, if walking happened at a quick pace of 112 steps a minute for 30 minutes, it maximized risk reduction, leading to a 62% reduction in dementia risk. The 30 minutes of fast-paced walking didn’t have to be finished all at once either — it could be spread out over the day.
The new study, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, followed78,500 people between the ages of 40 and 79 from England, Scotland and Wales who wore wrist step counters for 24 hours a day over a course of seven days.
After counting each person’s total number of steps each day, researchers placed them into two groups: Fewer than 40 steps per minute — which is more of an amble, like when you’re walking from room to room — and more than 40 steps per minute, or so-called “purposeful” walking. A third group was created for peak performers — those who took the most steps per minute within 30 minutes over the course of a day.
About seven years later, researchers compared that data to medical records and found people who took the most steps per minute — in this case, about 80 steps per minute — showed the biggest reduction in risk for cancer, heart disease and early death from any cause. There was a 62% reduction for dementia, an 80% decline for cardiovascular (心血管的) disease and death, and about a 20% drop in risk for cancer.
“This may be related with specific pathways by which physical activity is helpful,” said Pozo Cruz, one of the researchers. “It pushes the body in general: can generate more muscle, a bigger heart and a better fitness, all of which are known protective factors for cardiovascular disease and cancer, and other health issues too.”
28.Who is least likely to develop dementia according to the study?
A.John who walks 3,800 steps a day. B.Tom who walks 10,000 steps a day.
C.Chris who walks 78,500 steps a week. D.Bob who walks 3,360 steps in 30 minutes.
29.What does the underlined word “amble” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Jog. B.Rush. C.Slow walk. D.Quick pace.
30.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The research results. B.The purpose of walking.
C.The research method. D.The reasons for dementia.
31.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Walking cut the risk of dementia B.Quick walking can be risky
C.The best way to prevent cancer D.Quick walking VS slow walking

This century, many countries will face a difficult situation: how to balance human needs with the requirements of natural systems that are vital for sustaining life on Earth? The United Nations recently outlined the extent of the problem, saying that 2.7 billion people would face severe water shortages by 2025 if consumption continues at current rates. Today, an estimated 1.2 billion people drink unclean water, and about 2.5 billion lack proper toilets or waste disposal systems. More than five million people die each year from diseases related to unclean water. All over the globe, humans are taking water out of the ground faster than it can be refilled.
In this difficult situation, water conservationists, such as Rajendra Singh in India, are working to find solutions to the water crisis. They have found creative ways to improve their local water situations.
Rajendra Singh in India together with his organization would provide the engineering advice and materials; the villagers would supply the work. The 30-foot-high earthen dam and reservoir (水库), known as a johad, could be finished in three months, before the start of the rainy season. If the rains were plentiful, the reservoir would not only provide enough surface water for drinking and agriculture, but would also refill dry wells.
In recent years, Singh’s johads have sprung up all over Rajasthan — about 4,500 dams in about 1,000 villages. “If the villagers feel a johad is their own, they will maintain it,” said Singh. “This is a very sustainable, self-reliant system. I can say confidently that if we can manage rain in India in traditional ways, there will be sufficient water for our growing population.”
Some people still hope that new technology, such as the desalination (淡化) of seawater, will solve the world’s water problems. “But the fact is, water conservation is where the big gains are to be made,” says Sandra Postel of the Global Water Policy Project. The job that people like Rajendra Singh do offers inspiration for carrying out timely and lasting solutions to the world’s water concerns.
32.What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A.Much more water is needed nowadays than before.
B.Water problems are rather serious nowadays worldwide.
C.Waste disposal systems are vital for sustaining life on Earth.
D.Many countries will work. together to deal with water problems.
33.What were the villagers able to do for Rejendra Singh’s johads?
A.Provide materials and own the johads.
B.Offer their labour and maintain the johads.
C.Build johads and improve the water situation.
D.Give engineering advice and offer their own solutions.
34.In Sandra’ s opinion, what is the best solution to the world’s water problems?
A.Water conservation. B.New technology.
C.The desalination of seawater. D.Rajendra Singh’s johads.
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.An effective and practical way to deal with water problems.
B.The environment problems which are becoming worse and worse.
C.Water problems outlined by the United Nations.
D.Water shortage all over the world.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In a modern time when everyone is so busy with their routine and problems, we almost forget to notice others. 36 So it is worthy of sparing some moments to notice them and pass a compliment (称赞).
A compliment is a high dose (剂量) of positive words which helps make people feel good. Whether you are going through a street, a park, a market or other places, you can pass words full of praise and encouragement to even strangers because these positive words are what they want to hear. 37 Also, they will feel good enough to get the attention of those around them.
If you appreciate people for their hard work, they will gather the courage to do their job more skillfully. For example, a person may want to do something for his life but couldn’t do so because of a lack of encouragement and positive support. 38 And the creativity of people greatly increases through your positive comments.
39 When you tell strangers about themselves, praising them through your compliments, the ego (自我) will gradually disappear and healthy interactions will appear. If you fail to communicate with people or do not pass a compliment because of the ego, your relationship will stay distant.
When you start to praise and give positive words to people, you also get them back. Everyone wants to be praised and seen by others. If you break your ego first and appreciate people and tell them about their personalities, people also would like to do the same in return. 40
A.Then they will feel happy for your little act.
B.Everyone has their problems in today’s world.
C.You will develop a positive attitude towards life.
D.Compliments help make people close to each other.
E.People who are living around us may not always be there.
F.Through this, you will receive recognition of yourself, too.
G.With compliments, however, he will be encouraged to do what he wants to do.

One winter, it snowed heavily. The snowbanks grew higher and higher, forming towering walls along the sidewalks and roads and making it difficult to travel, Neighbors worked tirelessly to clear the snow in the public area when the snow stopped, ensuring convenient travel and safe transportation.
Leo and his friends all lived on the same street. They were all big guys who shouldered the responsibility of clearing the snow of the yard of their own house. Then after cleaning the snowbanks, they’d meet on the sidewalk daily and walk towards the court, where they’d spend the afternoon playing basketball.
On the way to the court. Leo always noticed that of all the houses on the block, there was one standing out with a yard covered with thick snow the whole winter. Leo knew that an old lad\ Mrs. Brown lived there alone who was too old to do the back-breaking work. Compared with neighboring houses with clean yards, that house looked so lonely and inharmonious.
Until one day, snow began to melt (融化) and the trees were coming into leaf just in time for spring. Leo couldn’t help but stare at his neighbor’s messy yard when they walked to the court. The melted snow showed some buried leaves, fallen branches, and other litter.
“I will clean the yard.” Leo said. His friends were surprised upon hearing this “Are you serious? Are you going to clean a yard that isn’t even yours instead of playing, basketball with us?” one of them asked.
“This house also belongs to our neighborhood. I’ll finish very soon and catch up with you all later” Leo insisted. After waving them goodbye, he quickly rushed home to fetch the tools he needed — a shovel (铁铲) and a dustpan.
Leo came back to the yard, and set about to do the clearing job.

W: He likes sports. I want to buy a basketball for him. But it’s a little expensive. I don’t have enough money.
M: Don’t worry. If you really want to give it to him, I can take you to my uncle’s store. There are many balls and they are very cheap.

【原文】M: Mary, do you know something about body languages around the world?
W: Sure. I’ve picked up quite a few from travelling around the world. Why?
M: Well, I had a meeting today with a woman from Japan and she wouldn’t stop bowing! I didn’t know what to do!
W: Did you bow back?
M: No, I tried to shake her hand, but she avoided shaking hands with me. I was a bit offended.
W: Well, Japanese businessmen typically bow to greet each other in Japan.
M: But she was in America! Didn’t she know that handshakes in America are very common?
W: Things are different in Japan. You know, in some countries, making eye contact with others is considered rude.
M: Is that why she wouldn’t look at me in the meeting?
W: It’s quite possible.
M: I think I need to learn more knowledge about body languages before I have another meeting with foreigners.
W: That’s a good idea.

Dear Tom,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re having a hard time learning Chinese. But don’t worry, as it’s normal to encounter difficulties when learning a new language. As long as you persevere, you’ll make progress.
To improve your Chinese, you can listen to Chinese songs and watch Chinese movies regularly, which can enhance your listening skills effectively. Reading Chinese novels and writing diaries in Chinese are also helpful for expanding your vocabulary and improving your writing ability. And don’t be afraid to practice speaking with native speakers whenever you have the chance.
I’m looking forward to your reply.
Best wishes,
Li Hua

67.范文1
He was shoveling the snow when his friends appeared one by one. To Leo’s surprise, his friends all came to help with tools for clearing. “Let’s do that together,” they said in chorus. It was then that Leo realized that his friends didn’t go to the court but went back home to fetch tools as him. They began to work together to shovel the melting snow out of the pathway, picked up the branches and swept the leaves from the ground. The boys cleaned the yard with all the energy as they did at the basketball court.(85words)
Very soon, with joint efforts, the yard took on a new look. The fallen leaves and branches as well as the litter had gone. Trees’ new shoots gave a comfortable color of light green to the yard and the bushes were in good spirits after being well cut. Seeing the yard was as neat as other houses’, Leo and his friends were very satisfied. There was enough time for playing basketball so they happily packed up their tools and headed for the court, leaving a warm surprise to the owner of that house.(81 words)
范文2
He was shoveling the snow when his friends appeared one by one. At first, they stood by, watching Leo work with a mixture of curiosity and amusement. But Leo’s determination was palpable, and it wasn’t long before they realized this was more than just a casual endeavor. It was a gesture of kindness and community spirit. One by one, they peeled off their jackets, picked up the extra shovels Leo had brought, and joined in the work. The sound of shovels scraping against the concrete and the occasional laughter filled the air. Neighbors passing by stopped to watch, then joined in without a word. It was a scene of unity and cooperation that seemed to warm the cold winter air.
Very soon, with joint efforts, the yard took on a new look. The once towering snowbanks were now just memories as the ground was gradually revealed. The once lonely and inharmonious yard was now a canvas of freshly turned earth, ready for the touch of spring. Mrs. Brown, watching from her window, was moved to tears. When the job was done, she came out to thank them, her gratitude evident in every word. The group stood back, admiring their handiwork, feeling a sense of accomplishment and pride. The basketball game that day was forgotten, but the feeling of togetherness and the knowledge that they had made a difference in someone’s life was a reward far greater than any game.
范文3
He was shoveling the snow when his friends appeared one by one. Initially, they teased Leo about his unexpected change of plans, but as they saw the sweat on his brow and the growing pile of snow he was moving, their attitudes began to shift. The camaraderie that had been forged on the basketball court found a new expression in the shared labor of love for their neighborhood. One by one, they stepped in to lend a hand, each taking a section of the yard to clear. The rhythmic sound of shovels biting into the snow created a melody of teamwork that resonated through the silent street.
Very soon, with joint efforts, the yard took on a new look. The once desolate and snow-covered space was transformed into a neat and tidy yard, mirroring the care and attention given by its neighbors. The sun, now shining brightly, seemed to cast a warm glow not just on the freshly cleared ground, but also on the hearts of those who had worked together. When Mrs. Brown opened her door to step outside, her eyes sparkled with gratitude as she surveyed the scene. The boys, panting and flushed from their labor, stood proudly around her, their smiles as bright as the day. The spirit of community had not only cleared the snow but had also warmed the heart of an elderly neighbor, making the winter day feel like the onset of spring.
