A Common Sense Media (媒体), a group that helps children, parents and teachers better understand media and technology, did a study. It paid attention to all kinds of activities about media, from old ways like reading and listening to the radio, to new favorites like using social media and video chatting. More than 2,600 teens were surveyed. Here are some truths and myths (荒诞的说法) the study found: Truth 1: Some teens spend too much time looking at screens. One in five teens use more than six hours of screen media each day, and 18% of teens are looking at their screens for more than 10 hours a day. Often they watch television on one while chatting with friends on another. Myth 1: This is the end of reading. The average(平均的) time young people spend reading, either in print or on a screen, is only 30 minutes a day. However, teens who took the survey say reading is one of their favorite activities. Truth 2: Boys prefer video games; girls prefer social media. Among teen boys, 71% enjoy playing video games, twice as many as teen girls. And while more than 25% of teen boys list playing video games as their favorite media activity, only 2% of teen girls do. What’s more, teen girls spend about 40 minutes more each day on social media than boys do. Myth 2: TV and music have been muscled out (强行逐出). For teens, TV is still the top media activity. They enjoy it the most and watch it every day. In fact, 47% of teens have TV sets in their bedrooms. For teens, music is the main form of amusement. However, only about a third listen to music on the radio. Most teens listen on their smartphones. 1.What can we learn from Truth 1? A.Teens prefer to watch TV rather than chat with friends. B.Teen boys spend more time on screens than teen girls. C.20% of teens spend more than 6 hours on screens a day. D.Teens spend too much time chatting with friends online. 2.What percent of teen girls enjoy playing video games? A.About 2%. B.About 25%. C.About 35%. D.About 70%. 3.What can we learn from Myth 2? A.TV and music have been muscled out. B.Most teens hope to have their own smartphones. C.More than half teens have TV sets in their bedrooms. D.It’s popular for teens to listen to music on smartphones. B As long as I can remember having a phone in my hand, I’ve been a terrible replier. When a new group chat is created, the members will come to laugh at my inability to respond to a simple question in a matter of hours. I’m not a horrible replier in all aspects of my life. In fact, I pride myself on my swift response time when it comes to work emails, my manager and my mum. “Call me instead,” I tell my friends. “I’m a much better caller.” They know if it’s urgent and they need me, I’ll pick up and always be there. But if I read a message and I categorize it as non-urgent, then it’s a different story. When it comes to the group chats, the conversations move so rapidly that if I’m not present for five minutes, I’ve suddenly missed 67 messages concerning daily matters. By the time I’ve responded to their messages, many have already messaged back, and then I mentally file their non-urgent messages away in the non-urgent cabinet (柜) again, and thus the problematic cycle continues — the unavoidable iMessage quicksand (流沙). I want to stress I do love my friends and I am grateful to be included in all of the group chats. I simply find it a headache to keep up with the never-ending stream of messages that we’re flooded with throughout the day. In these moments, my friend’s messages go unanswered and I sometimes feel like throwing my phone into a lake, lying on the floor and staring at a wall. Alas, I recently asked my friend Tully how she felt about my texting habits. She’s the friend you can always rely on to give you the non-sugar-coated truth. “You take three to five business days to respond if we’re lucky,” she tells me. Ouch, but probably not wrong. “To be fair,” she adds, “when we do eventually get an answer out of you — you are always down for the plans, you always show up when we need you, you never cancel and you’re usually the one driving 40 minutes across town to see us southside so… we can handle the group chat silence in return for that kind of friendship.” 4.What will happen if a friend sends the author a message in a group chat? A.The author will respond very soon. B.The author will call her friend back. C.It might be deleted and put into the cabinet. D.It might be answered in several hours or even days. 5.What is the basis for the author’s decision on response time to a message? A.The quality of friendship. B.The degree of urgency. C.Random choice. D.Time order. 6.What does the author focus on in the third and fourth paragraphs? A.The value of interpersonal relationship. B.The importance of being in a group chat. C.Problems with group chat messages. D.Methods of using group chats in our life. 7.Which of the following can best describe the author? A.Creative. B.Irresponsible. C.Lazy. D.Trustworthy. C It’s good to share, right? Growing up as kids we are told to share our toys and not to be selfish. We also live in an age when discussing our feelings is encouraged. But with new crazes becoming popular all the time, such as dance challenges and wearing a pillow (枕头) as a dress, the question is: when can sharing become oversharing on social media? Oversharing has become connected with social media, but isn’t unique to it. Imagine you head to a party and meet someone. Within five minutes they have given away very detailed information about their life. While some of us may try to escape these people, according to marriage expert Carolyn Cole, this form of oversharing could come from a strong desire to get close to someone. A painful developmental story lies behind the behaviour. People share too much because they have been too lonely. But they fail to understand the risks resulting from it. Dr Christopher Hand, a lecturer in cyberpsychology (网络心理学), says the more details people disclose, the less sympathy (同情) we express when things go wrong. This could be due to a belief that more negative experiences will be attracted if shared more. It seems that sadfishing, the idea of seeking sympathy by oversharing, is generally regarded as negative rather than the cry for help. However, Dr Hand’s research also seems to suggest that the more we post online, the more socially attractive we become on condition that the posts we share are positive. Even back in 2015, Gwendolyn Seidman PhD, said we should avoid complaining too much and being negative online. We should also avoid showing off, especially about our love lives. It makes sense— if your love lives are going ‘that well’, would you really have time to share a photo with text? So, how can you know if you are oversharing? Well, why not ask your friends in real life? They would be happy to tell you if your posts about your breakfast or your complaints about your lack of money really are too much. 8.Which of the following is a kind of oversharing? A.Disclosing personal details quickly at a party. B.Discussing our feelings online. C.Sharing our toys with kids unselfishly. D.Recording our feelings in the diary. 9.Why do people share too much according to Carolyn Cole? A.To satisfy their psychological needs. B.To overcome the sense of failure. C.To show their feeling of sympathy. D.To develop a painful story. 10.What do you know about sadfishing? A.It is an idea of sharing positive experiences. B.It is generally thought of as a cry for help. C.It is seen as a positive way to seek help. D.It is intended to attract sympathy. 11.What does the underlined sentence imply in Paragraph 4? A.People having good love lives are too busy to post online. B.Sharing photos and texts about love lives makes sense. C.People won’t have successful love if posting it online. D.Good love lives shouldn’t be shared on social media. D Research shows that when social media use is high, depression is also high. But the question is — is that because social media causes that person to be depressed? Or is it because people who are depressed tend to also use social media more, and spend less time exercising and being in green spaces? “That is what we wanted to understand,” says Carol Vidal, the first author of the study, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. In their study, 376 young adults in Canada were asked to complete three online questionnaires between May 2021 and January 2022. At each point, participants self-reported depressive symptoms based on the PHQ-9 — a nine-item scale (表) that is commonly used to measure depression — as well as social media use, green space exposure, and physical activity. Researchers found that participants who had higher social media use tended to be more depressed, and people who were more depressed also tended to use social media more. However, researchers found that social media use did not cause an increase or decrease in depressive symptom levels over time. Researchers also found that higher levels of social media use and higher levels of depressive symptoms were associated with lower levels of green space exposure. In addition, higher eveningness was also associated with higher depressive symptom levels. One study author says these results show social media use and depression are associated, but do not provide evidence that greater social media use predicts an increase in depressive symptoms over time. Other professionals in the team also say these findings indicate people who suffer from depression should be careful about the amount of time they spend on social media and should be encouraged to integrate other healthy habits into their lifestyle. Vidal and other investigators believe there are many aspects to social media, and there are important next steps to learn more about its impact on the mental health of people of all ages, including younger children and adolescents. 12.Why did Carol Vidal conduct the study? A.To explore how depression affects social media use. B.To investigate if green spaces benefit mental health. C.To find the link between social media and depression. D.To determine why social media contributes to depression. 13.How did the researchers measure depression in the study? A.By using a nine-item form called PHQ-9. B.By observing the participants’ daily behavior. C.By asking the participants’ friends and families. D.By analyzing the participants’ social media posts. 14.What do the researchers advise people with depression to do? A.Avoid using mobile phones. B.Develop healthy eating habits. C.Seek professional help regularly. D.Cut down the time on social media. 15.What does the follow-up study aim to find out? A.The types of social media. B.The influence of social media on mental health. C.The popularity of social media among younger children. D.Effective ways to limit social media use among the youth. The Internet is a useful tool that has become an important part of our daily lives. He rarely discussed anything in and after class or interacted with his teachers. It seemed that he preferred to stay in his own world. However, his classmates didn’t understand his quietness or interests and often didn’t invite him to take part in activities on purpose. In reality, however, John felt very lonely and was eager to connect with others, but didn’t know how to break down the barriers. He was dying to turn to someone for help. Sadly, John’s parents were too busy with daily chores (家务) to notice the change in him as he became quieter and more distant. Even when John gathered his courage to share his feelings, he was simply comforted by words like, “Go and get it. We know you can do it.” However, John was totally confused about how to pull himself out of this current situation. Sometimes, at home, he had no choice but to play his favorite jigsaw (拼图) in silence and avoid interacting with his parents. Gradually, he began to wonder if he was doing something wrong or if he really wasn’t good at making friends. He felt sad and started not to communicate with others. Luckily, John’s English teacher noticed his trouble and decided to step in to help. The teacher organized a class project after a math test, which seemed quite challenging for most students, but not for John. The teacher required the students to work together in groups to solve the problems and then he would invite someone to present their critical ideas on behalf of (代表) the group. The teacher then intentionally placed John in a group that was likely to give him confidence and encouraged him to show his strengths. Paragraph 1 At first, John hesitated, unsure of how to help. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2 At the end of the project, John formed new connections with his classmates. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________从句。) A Common Sense Media (媒体), a group that helps children, parents and teachers better understand media and technology, did a study. 【答案】8.A 9.A 10.D 11.A 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据第二段中“Oversharing has become connected with social media, but isn’t unique to it. Imagine you head to a party and meet someone. Within five minutes they have given away very detailed information about their life. (过度分享已经与社交媒体联系在一起,但并不是社交媒体独有的现象。想象一下,你去参加一个聚会,遇到了一个人。在五分钟内,他们就透露了自己生活的非常详细的信息)”可知,在派对上快速透露个人详细信息是一种过度分享的行为。故选A项。 9. 根据第二段中“While some of us may try to escape these people, according to marriage expert Carolyn Cole, this form of oversharing could come from a strong desire to get close to someone. (根据婚姻专家Carolyn Cole的说法,虽然我们中的一些人可能会试图逃离这些人,但这种过度分享的形式可能来自想要接近某人的强烈愿望)”可知,Carolyn Cole认为人们过度分享可能是为了满足想要接近他人的心理需求。故选A项。 10. 根据第三段中“It seems that sadfishing, the idea of seeking sympathy by oversharing, is generally regarded as negative rather than the cry for help. (似乎卖惨,即通过过度分享来寻求同情的想法,通常被认为是消极的,而不是寻求帮助)”可知,卖惨是为了吸引同情。故选D项。 11.词句猜测题。根据第四段中“We should also avoid showing off, especially about our love lives. It makes sense— if your love lives are going ‘that well’, would you really have time to share a photo with text? (我们也应该避免炫耀,尤其是我们的爱情生活。这是有道理的——如果你们的爱情生活“那么顺利”,你们真的有时间用文字分享一张照片吗)”可推知,此处先提到应避免炫耀爱情生活,然后用反问的修辞手法暗示,那些拥有美好爱情生活的人太忙了,没有时间在网上发帖。故选A项。 D Research shows that when social media use is high, depression is also high. 根据第一段中“Research shows that when social media use is high, depression is also high. But the question is — is that because social media causes that person to be depressed? Or is it because people who are depressed tend to also use social media more, and spend less time exercising and being in green spaces? “That is what we wanted to understand,” says Carol Vidal (研究表明,当社交媒体的使用率很高时,抑郁症也很严重。但问题是,这是因为社交媒体导致这个人抑郁吗?还是因为抑郁的人也倾向于更多地使用社交媒体,花更少的时间锻炼和呆在绿地上?“这就是我们想要了解的,”Carol Vidal说)”可知,Carol Vidal开展这项研究是为了发现社交媒体和抑郁症之间的联系。故选C项。 13.细节理解题。根据第二段中“At each point, participants self-reported depressive symptoms based on the PHQ-9 — a nine-item scale (表) that is commonly used to measure depression — as well as social media use, green space exposure, and physical activity. (在每个时间点,参与者根据PHQ-9,一份通常用于测量抑郁的9项量表,以及社交媒体使用、绿地空间接触和身体活动自我报告抑郁症状)”可知,研究人员通过一个名为PHQ-9的9项量表来测量抑郁。故选A项。 14. 根据第五段中“Other professionals in the team also say these findings indicate people who suffer from depression should be careful about the amount of time they spend on social media and should be encouraged to integrate other healthy habits into their lifestyle. (团队中的其他专业人士也表示,这些发现表明,抑郁症患者应该注意他们花在社交媒体上的时间,并应鼓励他们将其他健康习惯融入他们的生活方式中)”可知,研究人员建议抑郁症患者减少使用社交媒体的时间。故选D项。 15.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Vidal and other investigators believe there are many aspects to social media, and there are important next steps to learn more about its impact on the mental health of people of all áges, including younger children and adolescents. (维达尔和其他调查人员认为,社交媒体有很多方面,要进一步了解它对所有年龄段的人的心理健康的影响,包括年幼的儿童和青少年,还有重要的下一步工作要做)”可知,后续研究旨在了解社交媒体对心理健康的影响。故选B项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The Internet is a useful tool that has become an important part of our daily lives. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】    At first, John hesitated, unsure of how to help. Nervous but excited, he was afraid of expressing his ideas, yet eager to engage. However, as the group began discussing the project, he found himself knowing how to solve the problems other struggled with. Then bravely he talked with group members and his insights were invaluable to the team. Gradually, his classmates started to take notice of his talents and began asking for his ideas. Seeing the joyful expressions on his classmates’ faces, John started to feel less isolated and a wave of confidence swept over him.  At the end of the project, John formed new connections with his classmates. They invited him to join more group activities, and he no longer felt so distant. Instead, he became more outgoing and started participating actively in class. This newfound sense of belonging and encouragement gave him the confidence to open more. Finally, John realized that his journey from loneliness to friendship taught him the importance of taking the first step confidently. Sometimes, all it takes us is someone who supports and encourages you. 词汇激活: 行为类: 1 参加:engage/participate 2 解决:solve/tackle 3 注意到:take notice of/notice/spot 4 鼓励、激励:encourage/inspire 情绪类: 1 渴望的:eager/desired 2 高兴的:joyful/happy 【点睛】【高分句型1】However, as the group began discussing the project, he found himself knowing how to solve the problems other struggled with.(运用了以连词as引导的时间状语从句和省略了关系代词的定语从句。) 2】Finally, John realized that his journey from loneliness to friendship taught him the importance of taking the first step confidently.(运用了以连接词that引导的宾语从句。)
