How did Cook Ding compare himself to other cooks? Cook Ding compared himself to other cooks by comparing how often they had to change their knives. 2. What lesson did Lord Wenhui learn from Cook Ding? Lord Wenhui learnt that it is important to study the principles of doing things, and to have perseverance, concentration, wisdom and devotion to one’s craft. Task 2 Watch and Think What can we learn from Cook Ding? After you watch Task 1 Read the passage carefully. Cook Ding and the Ox A cook named Ding was cutting up an ox for Lord Wenhui. Every touch of his hand, every movement of his shoulder, every step of his foot, every bend of his knee, and every move of his knife were in perfect rhythm. “This is amazing!” said Lord Wenhui.“How did you learn such remarkable skills?” Ding put down his knife and replied, “What I care about are the principles, which go beyond mere skills. When I first began to cut up oxen, I could only see the whole animal. After three years, I no longer saw the whole ox, but learnt to look at it piece by piece. Now, I no longer see the structure of the ox with my eyes, but with my mind, my heart. And I know just where to cut, with my knife passing through the spaces between its joints and following its natural form. I don’t even touch the complicated muscles and tendons, let alone cut through the large bones.” “A good cook changes his knife once a year—because he cuts. An average cook changes his knife once a month—because he chops. I’ve used this knife for 19 years, cutting up thousands of oxen, and yet it’s as sharp as new. That’s because there are spaces between the joints—quite enough for the knife to move around smoothly. When I come to a complicated part, however, I tell myself to be careful, concentrate fully on it, and slowly move the knife with the greatest subtlety, until the ox falls apart like a crumbling clod of earth. I stand there with my knife in hand and look around with satisfaction. Then I wipe the knife and put it away.” Lord Wenhui was deeply impressed. Ding’s perseverance, concentration and devotion to his craft became legendary, and his wisdom is remembered even today. The work of German-born scientist Albert Einstein changed the field of physics forever, and vastly expanded people’s understanding of the universe. His theory of relativity, one of the fundamental theories of modern physics, and the equation E=mc2 paved the way for the development of atomic power. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics 1921. Albert Einstein (1879-1955) Task 2 Learn about the following people, read their quotes and answer the following questions. It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer. Albert Einstein Perseverance What is your understanding of this quote? What qualities does this quote convey? Frank Lloyd Wright was an American architect, interior designer, writer and educator whose revolutionary “organic architecture” earned him a defining role in early 20th century architectural movements. His structures were designed to be in harmony with the people who inhabited them as well as their natural surroundings. Over the course of his long and prolific career, Wright designed over 1,000 structures, 532 of which were completed, no fewer than 12 of which are among the Architectural Record’s hundred must important buildings of the century. Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) I know the price of success: dedication, hard work, and an unremitting devotion to the things you want to see happen. Frank Lloyd Wright the quality of commitment What is your understanding of this quote? What qualities does this quote convey? Although being one of the most celebrated Romantic composers, Brahms was a relatively traditional composers, due to his drawing on the form and order of the Classical period. Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) Without craftsmanship, inspiration is a mere reed shaken in the wind. Johannes Brahms The quality of skill and aptitude. What is your understanding of this quote?
