Luckily the traffic lights turned green as she was to cross the road, so she made it. When the bus passed a golden arch (拱形门), it reminded her of a hamburger. She hadn’t had breakfast that morning because the fruit salad on the blue dish didn’t look delicious at all. However, Amber remembered that she was still on a diet. So now she was really in a black mood. You may have noticed that several colours were used in the above story so as to help describe Amber’s morning. In fact, colours influence your life more than you can ever imagine. Take language for example: You may describe a sick person as being “a bit green”. To describe a depressed (沮丧的) person, you say that the person is “feeling blue”. In short, colours do add interest to daily conversations. Besides, colours can be used in many parts of your daily life. Have you ever thought about why many school buses and taxis are painted yellow, and stop signs red? Since yellow is the most eye-catching colour, it can catch people’s attention, especially in heavy traffic. As for red, it is the colour which usually shows warning. As a result, some traffic signs use this colour. For the same reason, hot- water taps are usually marked red. The colours of a dining environment possibly decide how much you eat. Most fast-food restaurants are often decorated in bright colours such as red, yellow, orange, and white for the purpose of increasing people’s appetites (胃口). This is because bright colours are natural colours found in many foods, and, therefore, able to raise people’s spirits. Blue, in comparison (对比) with bright colours, is said to lower people’s appetites because few foods are blue in nature. For those who are on a diet, blue dishes and bowls might help! “Morning, Amber! What happened? You look a bit green,” said Violet, Amber’s best friend. “Nothing…just feeling…blue,” said Amber. “Hey! Come to my place tonight. Do you know what I just bought? A phone! It’s red-hot.” Amber was tickled pink to have the chance to play with the phone and said, “Sounds great!” 21. According to the passage, if you are on a diet, ________ might help. A. putting your food in a blue dish or bowl B. turning on a yellow light during the meal C. painting the walls of the dining room white D. covering the dining table with an orange cloth 22. Most school buses are painted yellow because ________. A. it tells other drivers to prepare to stop B. it helps bus drivers stay in a good mood C. it can easily catch other people’s attention D. it is the colour that most school children like 23. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage? A. Colours influence people’s daily lives. B. Most fast-food restaurants are painted grey. C. Different colours are used for different purposes. D. Colours make daily conversations more interesting. A 22. C 23. 根据文章内容“For those who are on a diet, blue dishes and bowls might help!” 故选A。 根据“Since yellow is the most eye-catching colour, it can catch people’s attention, especially in heavy traffic.” 根据“Most fast-food restaurants are often decorated in bright colours such as red, yellow, orange, and white for the purpose of increasing people’s appetites.” B。 B It is said that Thomas Edison used to chase the twilight (追求模糊状态) moments between wakefulness and sleep. Supposedly, he used to fall asleep in a chair, holding two balls in his hands. As he nodded off, the balls fell down. The resulting noise woke him up. Then, he could write down his inventive ideas before he fell into a deep sleep and forgot them. This inspired a new study. Researchers tested Edison’s method of encouraging creativity with 103 healthy people. Volunteers came to the lab to solve a number problem. They were asked to change some numbers into a shorter sequence(序列). They were told to follow two simple rules. However, what the volunteers weren’t told was that there was an easy trick to finish this task. The second number in the sequence would always be the correct final number. After doing this task 60 times, volunteers got a 20-minute break. Volunteers held the similar balls that Edison used as “alarm clocks”. The researchers told them to rest or sleep if they wanted to. All the while their brain waves were kept track of (跟踪). More than half of the volunteers stayed awake. Twenty- four fell asleep and stayed in the stage (阶段) of sleep called N1. Fourteen others progressed to N2, a deeper stage of sleep. After their rest, volunteers returned to their number problem. People who reached the N1 stage of sleep were 2.7 times as likely to discover the hidden trick as people who stayed awake and were 5.8 times as likely to discover the trick as people who fell into a deeper sleep stage. “Such obvious (明显的) differences in such experiments are not common,” said Delphine Oudiette, a scientist. “We were quite surprised at the results, and more work is needed to show the connection between N1 and creativity.” Interestingly, according to the result of the experiment, people may be able to learn to take advantage of that twilight stage of sleep. Undoubtedly. Edison is such a great person, but there is no need to pay too much attention to Edison’s habit. He is also said to have considered sleep “a total waste of time”. 24. Why did Edison chase the twilight moments between wakefulness and sleep? A. To fall asleep faster. B. To have inventive ideas. C. To keep healthy. D. To be different. 25. How many volunteers stayed awake after the researchers told them to rest or sleep? A. 65. B. 24. C. 14. D. 51. 26. Who was the most likely to discover the hidden trick in the test? A. Volunteers who stayed awake. B. Volunteers who progressed to N2. C. Volunteers who reached the N1 stage of sleep. D. All the volunteers who took part in the study. B 25. A 26. 根据“Then, he could write down his inventive ideas before he fell into a deep sleep and forgot them. ”可知,爱迪生追求模糊状态,是为了拥有创造性想法。故选B。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据“Researchers tested Edison’s method of encouraging creativity with 103 healthy people.”和“More than half of the volunteers stayed awake.” 故选A。 根据“People who reached the N1 stage of sleep were 2.7 times as likely to discover the hidden trick as people who stayed awake and were 5.8 times as likely to discover the trick as people who fell into a deeper sleep stage.” C。 C Sending astronauts to Mars is a big challenge. Astronauts will have to take everything they need, including food, air and water. The room inside the spaceship is too limited to hold many things. So packing a spaceship is a huge challenge for a trip to Mars. Six astronauts on an eight-month trip to Mars will need at least 18,000 kilograms of water for drinking and washing. They’ll also need water to protect themselves from space rays which can pass right through spaceship walls and harm astronauts’ living cells. But a layer of water placed around the ship can stop the harm. That’s a lot of water. And sending water into space is too expensive. It costs $33,000 to send one cup of water to Mars. The more you take, the more it costs. We have the technology to get to Mars, but the problem is that it’s too expensive. But Flynn, an engineer at NASA, thinks he has a way of solving the problem. Instead of building a heavy spaceship and packing it full of stuff (物料), why not use the stuff as part of the spaceship? Imagine a spaceship that blows up like a balloon. Inside, the walls have pockets like a big honeycomb (蜂巢). These hold lots of plastic bags filled with water, dried food and algae (水藻). All these make hard walls and great radiation (辐射) protection. And stopping radiation doesn’t influence the food or water itself—it’s safe to eat and drink. And what if the same water could be reused again and again? Flynn and his team call their packed-pocket idea Water Walls. Making oxygen and taking away CO2—the waste gas you breathe out—is another problem in space. “Water Walls will take away CO2 the same way it’s done here on our Earth—with living plants,” Flynn says. Living plants take in CO2 to make their food, and give off oxygen. “Plants are hard to grow in a spacecraft, so we use algae,” he says. Algae are tiny plants that live in water. The algae will live in bags in the walls too, fed by human waste and sunlight, eating up CO2 and making oxygen for the astronauts to breathe. Flynn thinks his onboard recycling system has many advantages. He hopes it will help make flying to Mars a reality very soon. 27. What does the underlined phrase “packing a spaceship” in paragraph 1 most probably mean? A. repairing things in a spaceship B. recycling things in a spaceship C. checking things in a spaceship D. putting things into a spaceship 28. What is the advantage of Flynn’s system? A. Cost is saved. B. Travelling time is saved. C. Plastic bags are saved. D. Food is saved. 29. What is one purpose of Flynn’s idea of Water Walls? A. To prevent space rays during the space trip. B. To make the whole spaceship stronger. C. To control the temperature in the spaceship. D. To produce water in the spaceship. 30. Why are algae put in the plastic bags? A. To prevent water from being polluted. B. To serve as food for astronauts. C. To provide oxygen for astronauts. D. To help other plants grow in a spaceship. D 28. A 29. A 30. 根据“The room inside the spaceship is too limited to hold many things. So packing a spaceship is a huge challenge for a trip to Mars.” 根据“but the problem is that it’s too expensive”以及“But Flynn, an engineer at NASA, thinks he has a way of solving the problem.” 故选A。 根据“All these make hard walls and great radiation (辐射) protection.” 故选A。 根据“The algae will live in bags in the walls too, fed by human waste and sunlight, eating up CO2 and making oxygen for the astronauts to breathe.” C。 D Once I took a vacation in southern Italy. After climbing up a hill for a full view of the blue sea, white buildings and green trees, I stopped to catch my breath and then positioned myself to take the best photo. Unluckily, just as I took out my camera, a woman came from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view. Like me, she was there to appreciate the view. Patient as I was, after about 15 minutes, my camera scanning the sun and looking at the shot I would finally take, I grew angry. Was it too much to ask her to move so I could take just one picture of the landscape? Sure, I could have asked her, but something prevented me from doing so. She seemed so lost in her world. I didn’t want to mess with that. Another 15 minutes passed and I grew bored. The woman was still there. I decided to take the photo anyway. And now when I looked at it, I found her figure(身影) in the photo was what made the photo interesting. The landscape, beautiful on its own, somehow came to life because of her. The photo, with the unique beauty that unfolded before me and that woman who “ruined(破坏)” it, now hangs on a wall in my bedroom. What would she think if she knew that her figure was once captured(捕捉) and frozen on some stranger’s bedroom wall? Perhaps we all live in each other’s private space. Perhaps this is what photos are for: to remind us that we all appreciate beauty, that we all share a common desire for pleasure, for connection, for something that is greater than us. That photo is a reminder, a captured moment, an unspoken conversation between two women, separated only by a thin square of glass. 31. What happened when the writer took out her camera? A. A friend got close from behind. B. Someone asked her to leave. C. A woman was in front of her view. D. Her camera stopped working. 32. According to the writer, the woman was ________. A. losing her patience B. enjoying the landscape C. thinking about the past D. waiting for the sunset 33. In the writer’s opinion, what makes the photo so alive? A The perfect position of the camera. B. The beautiful landscape. C. The soft sunlight on that summer day. D. The woman in the photo. 34. The photo makes the writer have a better understanding of ________. A. the importance of private space B. the beauty of the unexpected C. the meaning of life D. the need to make friends 35. The passage is mainly about the writer’s ________. A. unforgettable friendship B. memory of climbing a hill C. art of taking photos D. thoughts on an experience 【答案】31. C 32. B 33. D 34. B 35. 根据“Unluckily, just as I took out my camera, a woman came from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view.” 根据“Like me, she was there to appreciate the view.” 根据“And now when I looked at it, I found her figure (身影) in the photo was what made the photo interesting.” 根据“The photo, with the unique beauty that unfolded before me and that woman who ‘ruined’ it, now hangs on a wall in my bedroom.” 根据“Perhaps this is what photos are for: to remind us that we all appreciate beauty, that we all share a common desire for pleasure, for connection, for something that is greater than us.” Would you completely trust your friends if you couldn’t see anything? Zhejiang. Last September he broke the Guinness (吉尼斯) World Record for the most single skips in one minute, with a result of 374. The record had stood unbroken for ten years. Daisuke Mimura from Japan held it with 348 skips in 2013. Interestingly, Zhou’s new record is not even his personal best. “My best performance was 396 times in one minute. That was done in the 2nd Primary and Secondary School Students’ Rope Skipping Championship in 2020. My coach said I had already broken the world record. It was at that time that I made up my mind to apply for the Guinness World Record,” Zhou said. However, the road to success was far from smooth. For years, Zhou practised with a special steel rope designed for competition. It’s light and strong. But because of the rope he used, his first Guinness application was considered invalid (无效). After online communication with the records management team, Zhou quickly changed to a common rope recognized (认证) by the Guinness World Records. He soon got used to it. Whatever kind of rope Zhou used, his strict training stood him in good sporting condition. Zhou has been in the school rope skipping team for seven years. He has jumped rope for about four hours each day. He would also run around the playground to improve his physical strength. Now a high school student, Zhou said he’ll put his studies first. B It is said that Thomas Edison used to chase the twilight (追求模糊状态) moments between wakefulness and sleep. C Sending astronauts to Mars is a big challenge. D Once I took a vacation in southern Italy. A. The perfect position of the camera. A. unforgettable friendship B. memory of climbing a hill C. art of taking photos D. thoughts on an experience Would you completely trust your friends if you couldn’t see anything?
