Scientists have been studying spiderwebs and have created music from their vibrations (震动) .
From communication to construction, spiderwebs may offer a huge amount of information, said Markus Buehler, professor at MIT.
MIT shared an excerpt of the music on YouTube. In it, you can hear just how creepy the melody sounds. It, honestly, gives even more darkness to the creatures that live in the corner of the room.
But the melody isn’t just here to sound creepy. The researchers say that it will also help them better understand the architecture of the spider’s web. The music made from the spider webs could also help us learn the vibrational language of spiders.
Actually, spiders don’t really see that well, despite having multiple eyes. So, they rely on the vibrations of their webs to determine where something is. “Spiders use vibrations as a way to connect with the environment and with other spiders, ” Buehler said.
Professor Buehler and his team of researchers created 3D models of spider webs when the spiders were doing different things such as construction, repair, hunting and feeding. They then listened for patterns in the spider signals and recreated the sounds using computers. He hopes his team’s work could enable humans to understand the language of a spider and one day communicate with them.
There are more than 47, 000 species of spiders, and all spin silk webs to provide housing and catch food. Scientists say the silk from a spiderweb is five times stronger than steel. A better understanding of how these webs work has been difficult in the past, but the hope is that further study of spider webs will uncover more about these creatures.
The living structure of a spiderweb could lead to innovations in construction, and repair, Professor Buehler said. “We can imagine creating a synthetic system based on what the spider does in sensing the web, and repairing the web,” he said.
24. How do viewers feel about the melody posted online?
A. Frightened. B. Delighted.
C. Relaxed. D. Calm.
25. According to the passage, what is the function of the vibrations of the spider’s web?
A. To entertain themselves. B. To attract other spiders.
C. To communicate with the surroundings. D. To protect themselves from attack.
26. How do the researchers study the spiderweb?
A. By doing a survey. B. By observing closely.
C. By setting up a virtual model. D. By comparing data collected.
27. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The structure of the spider web.
B. Spiders’ skills of repairing the spider web.

Did you know that even if you exercise regularly, you might still be what researchers call an “active couch potato”? Think about this: If you exercise once a day for 30 to 45 minutes, you could still spend 80% to 90% of your waking hours sitting. A study in England showed that while over 55% of adults met the recommended physical activity guide lines, they still sat for about 10 hours a day.
Spending too many hours inactive each day, including watching TV (a classic couch potato activity), can increase the risk of fitness and more than 30 other chronic (慢性的) illnesses. Inactivity has also been found to raise chances of heart disease. This imbalance can cancel out many of the positive effects of exercising, such as controlling blood sugar and improving blood flow (流动) to the legs and brain. Just four to six hours of inactivity can cause a drop in an enzyme (酶) that helps the body use fat for energy.
Researchers from New Zeal and compared people who sat for 18 hours without exercising with “active couch potatoes” who exercised for 30 minutes between two nine-hour periods of inactivity. They also compared these groups with a third group who did light exercise for just two minutes every half an hour. The sedentary and “active couch potato” groups had higher blood sugar levels, while the light exercise group had better blood sugar control.
The results of these studies point to the same conclusion: No matter how active you are, it’s important to be less of a couch potato — or a more active one. So, if your New Year’s resolution is to start a new exercise plan, remember to take breaks to avoid sitting too long by walking for a few minutes throughout the day too.
28. What does the term “active couch potato” suggest about regular exercise?
A. Regular exercise should be avoided.
B Long regular exercise is unnecessary.
C. Regular exercise isn’t always good for health.
D. Daily one-time short exercise isn’t enough for good health.
29. What do we know about being inactive for too many hours each day?
A. It can reduce chances of heart disease.
B. It can quicken blood flow to the legs and brain.
C. It can be good for enzyme activity for fat usage.
D. It can increase the risk of fitness and chronic illnesses.
30. What do the underlined words “The sedentary” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. People who are inactive for a long time.
B. People training others to do proper exercise.
C. People who like doing exercise during work.
D. People doing exercise more than 3 hours a day.
31. What is the text?
A. A paper on working too long. B. A personal diary.
C. An article on health. D. A news report on chronic illnesses.
D 29. D 30. A 31. C

With a father who is a chemist and a mother who is a biologist it seemed natural for Kelydra to learn how the world worked by doing science experiments. Kelydra was 15 when the breaking news came that a chemical called C8 in her town’s water supply might cause cancer. Kelydra wondered what she could do to help.
Like any good scientist, she started by researching the problem. What exactly was C8? She found out that C8, also known as APFO, is a chemical with a chain of eight carbon atoms. This chemical has shown up not only in drinking water but also in the bodies of people and animals. How much of this chemical was in the water supply? In fact, nobody even knew of an inexpensive, reliable test that could measure the amount of APFO in water. So Kelydra decided to invent one.
Kelydra learned that when you shake water contaminated with high amounts of APFO, the water gets foamy The more APFO in the water, the more foam there will be. In this way she could calculate the level of pollutants of the original river water sample. But she wanted to know more than that.
So she started working on a way to remove APFO from the water. She finally succeeded by using a device, consisting of a dry cell battery and two electrodes (电极) . Kelydra dipped the electrodes in the water. Then, in a specific process, one of the electrodes became an electrically charged tool that attracted the APFO in the water. Kelydra could then remove the electrode, wash it off, and put it back in the water to draw out more of the chemical.
Kelydra then added another ingredient to the water: activated carbon which looks like grains of black sand and is used in water filters. The carbon filtered (过滤) out even more of the APFO. Kelydra repeated the electrosorption and carbon-filtering process until the water was completely free of APFO — and safe to drink.
32. What inspired Kelydra to solve the problem?
A. Her extensive knowledge in chemistry.
B. Her deep concern for the locals’ health.
C. Her great passion for doing experiments.
D. Her firm desire to follow her parents’ path.
33. What does the underlined word “contaminated” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Cleaned. B. Polluted. C. Heated. D. Identified.
34. Why did Kelydra add activated carbon to the water?
A. To purify the water. B. To remove the foam.
C. To filter the carbon. D. To charge the electrodes.
35. Which of the following best describes Kelydra?
A. Curious and adventurous. B. Confident and cheerful.
C. Conservative and courageous. D. Innovative and committed.
B 33. B 34. A 35. D

根据第一段中的“Kelydra was 15 when the breaking news came that a chemical called C8 in her town’s water supply might cause cancer. Kelydra wondered what she could do to help.(Kelydra 15岁时,一则爆炸性新闻传开:她镇上供水系统中一种叫做C8的化学物质可能会导致癌症。Kelydra想知道她能做些什么来帮忙)”可推测出,Kelydra非常关心当地人的健康,所以才想要解决C8的问题。故选B。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第一段中的“a chemical called C8 in her town’s water supply might cause cancer(一种叫做C8的化学物质可能会导致癌症)”和第二段中的“C8, also known as APFO(C8,也被称为APFO)”可知,C8就是APFO,这是一种化学物质,可能会导致癌症,再结合画线词所在句中的“you shake water contaminated with high amounts of APFO”可推测出,这里指的是被大量APFO污染的水,contaminate意为“污染”,与pollute意思一致。
根据最后一段中的“Kelydra then added another ingredient to the water: activated carbon which looks like grains of black sand and is used in water filters. The carbon filtered (过滤) out even more of the APFO.(Kelydra随后在水中添加了另一种成分:活性炭,它看起来像黑沙粒,用于水过滤器。碳过滤掉了更多的APFO)”可知,活性炭用于水过滤器,它过滤掉了更多的APFO。由此可推测出,Kelydra添加活性炭是为了净化水质。故选A。

Whether you’re looking to lose a few pounds, spend more time at the gym or learn a language, turning bad habits into good ones is all about self-control. Some of us have more than others. And research shows that those with more self-control tend to be happier. But the problem is that we usually only get rewarded in the future. ____36____
Michael Inzlicht is a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto and a self-control researcher. He says that the ironic thing about self-control is that those who are really good at it don’t have to practice it. ____37____ When you love and desire something that tends to be better for you, like studying, working hard or exercising, for example, you don’t have to think about doing it. Inzlicht says that these types of individuals generally have what’s called “trait self-control” meaning it’s an aspect of their personality.
When it comes to improving self-control, Inzlicht says it’s difficult to change the personality that you’re born with. ____38____ A wide body of research shows that you can improve self-control for a particular behavior you want to change or a habit you’d like to develop. For example, Inzlicht says that when we get paid to make life changes, we’re more likely to make them. Some gyms will charge you a certain amount of money for a year-long membership and then give you a few cents back every time you come. ____39____
____40____ Part of failing at developing self-control is in getting frustrated at yourself for not changing overnight. If you’re building self-control in losing weight, for instance, don’t try switching to nothing but fruits and vegetables all at once because it’s too dramatic a change — not to mention unsustainable.
A. However, this doesn’t mean you can do nothing about it.
B. Another tip for success, says Inzlicht, is making gradual steps.

前文“And research shows that those with more self-control tend to be happier. But the problem is that we usually only get rewarded in the future. (研究表明,自控能力强的人往往更快乐。但问题是,我们通常只在未来得到奖励)”指出自控能力强可以带来快乐,但这种快乐在未来才能得到,因此E项“Thus, we are constantly weighing whether to wait or to have it right now. (因此,我们不断地权衡是等待还是现在就拥有它)”符合语境,表明我们会纠结于是自控以得到未来的快乐,还是不自控现在就获得快乐,是前文矛盾的结果,承接前文。故选E。
【37题详解】
前文“He says that the ironic thing about self-control is that those who are really good at it don’t have to practice it. (他说,具有讽刺意味的是,那些真正擅长自我控制的人并不需要练习自我控制)”指出擅长自控的人不需要练习自控,后文“When you love and desire something that tends to be better for you, like studying, working hard or exercising, for example, you don’t have to think about doing it. (当你喜欢并渴望一些对你更好的事情时,比如学习、努力工作或锻炼,你不必考虑去做)”用具体的例子说明这种自控可以自然发生,因此D项“They can maintain the good habits all the time without much effort. (他们可以毫不费力地一直保持好习惯)”符合语境,说明这样的人可以轻松保持好习惯,是对前文的解释,后文是对其例证,选项中的They指代前文的those who are really good at it。故选D。
【38题详解】
前文“When it comes to improving self-control, Inzlicht says it’s difficult to change the personality that you’re born with. (说到提高自我控制能力,Inzlicht说,很难改变你与生俱来的性格)”指出提高自控力很困难,后文“A wide body of research shows that you can improve self-control for a particular behavior you want to change or a habit you’d like to develop. (大量的研究表明,你可以提高你想要改变的特定行为或你想要养成的习惯的自制力)”说明特定行为或习惯的自控力是可以提升的,因此A项“However, this doesn’t mean you can do nothing about it. (然而,这并不意味着你对此无能为力)”符合语境,指出提高自控力也是有办法的,和前文构成转折,引出后文,其中的this指代前一句话。故选A。
前文“For example, Inzlicht says that when we get paid to make life changes, we’re more likely to make them. Some gyms will charge you a certain amount of money for a year-long membership and then give you a few cents back every time you come.
后文“Part of failing at developing self-control is in getting frustrated at yourself for not changing overnight. If you’re building self-control in losing weight, for instance, don’t try switching to nothing but fruits and vegetables all at once because it’s too dramatic a change — not to mention unsustainable.

It can enhance one’s confidence and improve self-esteem, especially for those who have experienced trauma or have congenital defects. However, it’s crucial to understand the risks involved and not to become overly reliant on it for self-worth. In a quiet home, a young girl named Emily sat at her piano, her fingers dancing across the keys with love that often left her in a world of her own. Her mother, a strict woman with high expectations, always required her to focus on her studies. Music was a luxury they couldn’t afford, she’d say.
“Emily, you need to stop this daydreaming and concentrate on your math,” her mother would demand, with a serious look on her face. Emily’s heart would sink at her mother’s words.
One day, Emily gathered the courage to play a piece she had created for her mother. Her fingers shook as she began, pouring her soul into every note.
“Mom, I want you to hear this,” Emily said in a low voice.
Her mother, buried in her work, hardly looked up. “Can it wait, dear? I’m quite busy.”
Emily’s fingers froze on the keys, her heart aching with her mother’s words. She wanted to shout, to make her mother understand the importance of music in her life, but the words caught in her throat. Instead, she quietly closed the piano lid and returned to her room, her unappreciated song echoing (回响) in her mind.
That night, as Emily lay in bed, the silence was deafening, and her tears rolled down. She felt alone, with her dreams being a secret in her heart. The next morning, she awoke to the sound of her mother’s soft knock on the door.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;

The door cracked open, and Emily’s mother stood there silently. Her face was soft with concern, a rare expression that Emily hadn’t seen in a long time. “Emily, honey, I heard you playing last night,” her mother began, her voice tinged with regret. “I realize now that I haven’t been supportive enough of your passion for music. You’ve always loved it so much, and I see that it means the world to you. I was wrong to dismiss it as a luxury. It’s a part of you, and I should have encouraged it.”
Tears of understanding and hope welled up in Emily’s eyes. She felt a weight lift off her chest, a release from the silence and solitude she had been enduring. “Mom, thank you,” she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. “I didn’t mean to make you feel bad. I just wanted you to understand. Music is my escape, my way of expressing myself when words fail me. I love studying, but without music, I feel incomplete.” Her mother nodded, tears in her own eyes, and embraced Emily tightly. From that day on, Emily’s mother became her biggest supporter, attending every recital and encouraging her to chase her dreams with unwavering belief.

C. The construction process of the spider web.
D. The significance of studying spider web structure.

28 What does the term “active couch potato” suggest about regular exercise?

C. Even a small amount of money can encourage people to work out.
D They can maintain the good habits all the time without much effort.
E. Thus, we are constantly weighing whether to wait or to have it right now.
F. Don’t be afraid of frustration, since it is necessary for your improvement.
G. Actually, self-control improvement can bring about benefits to all individuals.

Her mother buried in her work, hardly looked up.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;
The door cracked open, and Emily’s mother stood there silently.
