Karen Keech Swerling worked in Hollywood as a costume designer for three decades. She and her husband were looking for a change of pace in retirement, so eight years ago they traded their house in Malibu for an early 1900s Victorian in Richmond’s museum district. Swerling turned the basement into a studio for her nonprofit organization, Richmond Really Sews!, and she offered free classes to anyone crazy about sewing.
Swerling said, “People chat while they’re sewing and become friends — I love it. Sewing allows us to express where we come from and how we feel. We can’t do that if we go to the store.”
Members of Richmond Really Sews! are people of different backgrounds. Every Saturday afternoon, they gather around 30 work stations with different sewing machines. On Nov. 2nd, they showcased their work at their annual fundraiser, Richmond Frocktails, a fashion show featuring their handmade creations. While Swerling donates her time and talent, she relies on money raised at the event to cover sewing machine maintenance and supplies.
In the spring, the group went to New York City, where they encountered famous fabric designers at Elliott Berman and Metro Textiles, When they returned to Richmond, they received a surprise: a 60-pound box of fabric s from Elliott Berman. “They’re sustainable fabric s from France and Italy and really high-end fabrics,” Swerling said.
Swerling says she loves sharing her knowledge as a way of honoring the teachers at California’s Long Beach City College, where she met a significant teacher, Alicia Annas, who helped her research the business and introduced her to friends in Hollywood.
Swerling’s first project was “Esperanza” with the American Film Institute in 1982. Though unpaid, the work made her known and brought her into the clothing industry so that she was able to go on to design the costumes for The Munsters Today series and the movie Far North. Over the next 33 years, she designed costumes for major feature films and TV shows. Despite her career success, Swerling says she feels the most fulfilled today, passing on her skills to others and keeping the art of sewing alive.
24. What does Swerling say about sewing?
A. It increases her family’s income. B. It enlarges people’s social circle.
C. It cures people of their bad habits. D. It helps those with mental problems.
25. Why is Richmond Frocktails held every year?
A. To popularize the concept of sewing. B. To attract more physical donations.
C. To collect funds for the organization. D. To expand the organization’s business.
26. How does Swerling probably feel about Alicia Annas?
A. Grateful. B. Annoyed. C. Regretful. D. Scared.

Elon Musk has been talking about turning the social media platform Twitter into X for months, while being vague about what that exactly means. Does X represent a major business experiment? A totally new concept for on-line living? Or is it simply one man’s addiction to the 24th letter of the alphabet?
Probably it’s all of the above, according to Ashlee Vance, the author of Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future. In one of his earliest business adventures, Musk called his online bank X. com. That name was later dropped when the platform was bought by a competitor and became PayPal.
“Everyone tried to talk him out of naming the company that back then, but he really liked it and refused to give in,” said Vance.
X is already in the name of Tesla’s third electric car model, which was announced to the public in 2015. His spaceflight company is called SpaceX. In 2020, Musk even named his youngest son “X AE A-12”.
But lately, naming his social media platform “X” may refer to Musk’s newest ambition, building an “everything app” like China’s popular WeChat. “He wants to create an app similar to how WeChat is used in China, where it’s part of day-to-day life. You use it to communicate, to consume news, to buy things, to pay your rent, to make appointments with your doctor and even to pay fines,” said Vance. “Following the WeChat model makes sense with what Musk wants for Twitter. The company clearly needs a new, bigger business if it’s to make the type of money that would justify his investment and satisfy his ambition.”
But social media experts are questioning about Musk’s “everything app”. “I’m not sure he has enough trust from his user base to get people to actually exchange money or attach any type of financial institution to his app,” Jennifer Grygiel, a professor at Syracuse University, told NPR. “I think this is a way to destroy it, instead of recreating it as something else.”
28. Which is closest in meaning to “vague” underlined in paragraph 1?
A. Unspecific. B. Curious. C. Uninterested. D. Eager.
29. What does the X in “X AE A-12” most probably stand for?
A. Musk’s plan to have 26 babies. B. Musk’s blind love for the letter X.
C. Musk’s doubt about his son’s DNA. D. Musk’s ambition to create a new business.
30. What does Ashlee Vance mean in paragraph 5?
A. Musk paid too much to buy Twitter. B. WeChat is more popular than Twitter.
C. X may indicate Musk’s new business plan. D. It is not safe to model X on China’s WeChat.
31. What is Jennifer Grygiel’s attitude to the “everything app”?
A. Favorable. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned. D. Unclear.
A 29. B 30. C 31. B
根据画线词后文“Does X represent a major business experiment? A totally new concept for on-line living? Or is it simply one man’s addiction to the 24th letter of the alphabet?(X是否代表了一个重大的商业实验?一个全新的在线生活概念?或者仅仅是一个人对字母表中的第24个字母上瘾?)”一系列的疑问可推断,马斯克对于要把社交媒体平台Twitter变成X的意思并不明确。因此猜测vague与unspecific意思相近,表示“不具体的,不明确的”。故选A。
根据第一段“Or is it simply one man’s addiction to the 24th letter of the alphabet?(或者仅仅是一个人对字母表中的第24个字母上瘾?)”以及第三段““Everyone tried to talk him out of naming the company that back then, but he really liked it and refused to give in,” said Vance.(万斯说:“当时所有人都劝他不要给公司取这个名字,但他真的很喜欢这个名字,拒绝让步。”)”
根据第五段““He wants to create an app similar to how WeChat is used in China, where it’s part of day-to-day life. You use it to communicate, to consume news, to buy things, to pay your rent, to make appointments with your doctor and even to pay fines,” said Vance. “Following the WeChat model makes sense with what Musk wants for Twitter. The company clearly needs a new, bigger business if it’s to make the type of money that would justify his investment and satisfy his ambition.”(他想开发一款类似微信在中国的使用方式的应用,微信已成为中国日常生活的一部分。你用它来交流、阅读新闻、购物、支付房租、预约医生,甚至支付罚款。”“遵循微信模式符合马斯克对Twitter的期望。如果想要赚到足够的钱来证明他的投资是合理的,并满足他的雄心壮志,这家公司显然需要一个新的、更大的业务。”)”可知,Ashlee Vance认为这个X可能代表Elon Musk的商业雄心。故选C。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““I’m not sure he has enough trust from his user base to get people to actually exchange money or attach any type of financial institution to his app,” Jennifer Grygiel, a professor at Syracuse University, told NPR. “I think this is a way to destroy it, instead of recreating it as something else.”(“我不确定他是否有足够的用户信任,让人们真正去兑换货币,或者在他的应用程序上添加任何类型的金融机构,”雪城大学教授詹妮弗·格里吉尔告诉NPR。“我认为这是一种摧毁它的方式,而不是把它重新创造成别的东西。”)”可推断,Jennifer Grygiel对这个app是怀疑态度。故选B。
D
Climate change, pollution and fast-paced life got you down? Wish you could buy a ticket on the Europa Clipper spacecraft? Before you decide to leave Earth behind, consider the life of an astronaut on the International Space Station (ISS).
Two NASA astronauts have been living aboard the ISS since their departure from Earth on June 5. Their mission, originally meant to last around a week, will have gone on for over eight months. NASA’s accepted odds for loss of crew during the extended stay, or chances they two won’t make it back to Earth alive, are 1 in 270. Although chances of death on their mission are relatively low, the effects of their long term stay in space will likely have an impact on their bodies.
Living in microgravity causes bodily fluids to become more evenly distributed, with up to two extra liters of blood in the upper body, triggering constant feelings of puffiness (浮肿), especially in the head and face. Captain Kelly, a former NASA astronaut, describes the feeling, “It feels a little like standing on your head 24 hours a day.” The way fluids redistribute themselves in space also causes urine (尿液) to float along the sides of the bladder (膀胱), which can prevent astronauts from feeling a need to urinate until their bladders become completely full, leading to an unexpected, spontaneous need to urinate.
Discoveries made during NASA’s study found extended time in space also impacts telomeres (端粒). During almost a year in space, Captain Kelly’s telomeres had actually lengthened, which is usually an indicator of lower odds of age-related diseases. However, during the months after returning to Earth, the length of his telomeres was discovered to be critically shorter than his preflight levels.
If you are planning a trip to space as your next luxury vacation, prepare to encounter many more serious health consequences in a completely new environment. For astronauts like Captain Kelly, the impact space has on the body is a small price to pay to explore the solar system. For those of us who haven’t been to space yet, health conditions caused by living in microgravity can be a reminder of how comfortable life is here on Earth.
32. What can we know about the two astronauts from Paragraph 2?
A. NASA has accepted the fact of losing them.
B. They postpone their missions to eight months later.
C. Staying in space has potential damage to their physical conditions.
D. The longer they stay in space, the lower chances they have of returning alive.
33. How do the bodily fluids affect astronauts living in microgravity?
A. They make astronauts’ whole bodies puffy.
B. They greatly weaken astronauts’ urges to urinate.
C. They accumulate more in the upper body than the lower.
D. They cause astronauts to feel like standing 24 hours a day.
34. What can we learn from Captain Kelly?
A. He was less likely to suffer age-related diseases.
B. He reminded us that living on Earth was comfortable.
C. Living in space had no significant impact on his overall health.
D. His telomeres lengthened first and then shortened after returning from space.
35. What does the author intend to imply according to this article?
A. It is not worth exploring the solar system.
B. Travelling in space is an affordable journey.
C. It is possible to travel to space as a vacation.
D. Exploring the space takes devotion and sacrifice.
C 33. B 34. D 35. D
根据第二段中“Although chances of death on their mission are relatively low, the effects of their long term stay in space will likely have an impact on their bodies. (虽然他们在执行任务时死亡的几率相对较低,但他们在太空长期停留的影响可能会对他们的身体产生影响。)”可知,长时间留在太空有可能对宇航员的身体状况有潜在的损害。故选C项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“The way fluids redistribute themselves in space also causes urine (尿液) to float along the sides of the bladder (膀胱), which can prevent astronauts from feeling a need to urinate until their bladders become completely full, leading to an unexpected, spontaneous need to urinate. (液体在太空中重新分配自己的方式也会导致尿液漂浮在膀胱两侧,这可能会使宇航员在膀胱完全充满之前感觉不到小便的需要,从而导致意外的、自发的小便需要。)”可知,体液会削弱生活在微重力环境中的宇航员的尿意。故选B项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“During almost a year in space, Captain Kelly’s telomeres had actually lengthened, which is usually an indicator of lower odds of age-related diseases. However, during the months after returning to Earth, the length of his telomeres was discovered to be critically shorter than his preflight levels. (在近一年的太空生活中,Captain Kelly的端粒实际上变长了,这通常是患与年龄有关疾病的几率较低的一个指标。然而,在返回地球后的几个月里,他的端粒长度被发现比他飞行前的水平短得多。)”可知,从太空回来后,Captain Kelly的端粒先是变长,然后又变短。故选D项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“If you are planning a trip to space as your next luxury vacation, prepare to encounter many more serious health consequences in a completely new environment. For astronauts like Captain Kelly, the impact space has on the body is a small price to pay to explore the solar system. For those of us who haven’t been to space yet, health conditions caused by living in microgravity can be a reminder of how comfortable life is here on Earth.(如果你打算去太空旅行作为你的下一个豪华假期,准备在一个全新的环境中遇到更多严重的健康后果。对于像Captain Kelly这样的宇航员来说,太空对身体的影响是探索太阳系的一个小代价。对于我们这些还没有去过太空的人来说,生活在微重力下引起的健康问题可以提醒我们地球上的生活是多么舒适。)”可知,作者想暗示探索太空需要奉献和牺牲。故选D项。

根据空前“Embracing change is like trying a new flavor of ice cream — you might be doubtful at first, but the taste could be surprisingly delightful at last! The miracle is all about shifting your mindset and daring to dance with the unknown.(拥抱改变就如同尝试一种新口味的冰淇淋 —— 起初你或许心存疑虑,但最终那味道可能会给你带来意想不到的愉悦!其中的奇妙之处全在于转变你的思维模式,敢于与未知共舞。)”可知,上文提到拥抱改变需要转变心态、敢于面对未知。而下文则开始介绍如何拥抱改变。选项A“Here is how to make it happen(以下是如何做到这一点)”起承上启下的作用,引出下文具体做法,符合语境。故选A。
根据上文“To start with, take a good look at your life and spot the areas that could use a change. Is there a dream job you are too scared to chase?(首先,审视你的生活,找出那些需要改变的方面。是否有一份你因过于害怕而不敢追寻的理想工作?)”可知,上文提到审视生活中需要改变的领域,问是否有不敢追寻的理想工作。选项B“Or a skill you are eager to master(或者是你渴望掌握的一项技能?)”与前文“Is there a dream job you are too scared to chase?”
根据空前“Take baby steps towards change when you’ve set up your goal.(当你设定好目标后,朝着改变迈出小步伐。)” G“Break your goal into bite-sized tasks and overcome them one by one(把你的目标分解成小的任务,然后一个一个地克服它们)”具体说明了如何迈出小步,符合该段主旨。
根据下文“Be ready to question your old beliefs and expand your horizons. Just as Steve Jobs puts it, “Stay hungry, stay foolish”. It’s in these moments of constant learning that you’ll uncover your hidden superpower.(准备好质疑你原有的信念,拓宽自己的视野。正如史蒂夫・乔布斯所说:“求知若饥,虚心若愚。” 正是在这些不断学习的时刻,你会发现自己隐藏的强大力量。)”可知,本段提到要乐于质疑旧信念、拓展视野,强调要不断学习。选项C“Keep your appetite for knowledge(保持对知识的渴望)”与后文内容相符,体现了不断学习、求知的意思。故选C。
【40题详解】
根据下文“so unlock the door and make yourself a real ruler!(所以,打开这扇门,让自己成为真正的主宰!)”

故填was made。

故填it。

“You include too many safety schools,” this was the same comment from all my teachers, family, and friends about my list of colleges. “Why not choose more reach schools? It’s harder to get their offer, but I have confidence in you,” my mom said to me, confused. “I’m afraid of being rejected (拒绝) by every university,” I murmured faintly.
As a child, I was always cautious and alert, attempting to minimize every possibility of risk or danger. My early years were characterized by careful preparation and a never-ending search for safety. I can still clearly recall my first day of kindergarten when I tightly gripped my mother’s hand until my knuckles (指关节) turned white. It was impossible to face the overpowering fear of the unknown and entering a room full of strangers. But I overcame them, as I have overcome many fears, by learning to take baby steps toward my goals.
There were new challenges in high school. My biggest fear was public speaking, but I realized that the only way to get over it was to tackle it head-on. There were painful moments in the beginning. My thoughts would race, and my voice would tremble. I encountered sharp objections and “heart-hurting” comments, but I became more assured and accomplished with every opportunity before the class. I discovered how to use my fear as motivation to write better drafts, encounter accidents, and improve my public speaking. Eventually, my English teacher chose me as the host of our school’s Foreign Language Reading Festival at the end of the semester. I distinguished myself by giving a persuasive speech on English reading abilities and won tremendous applause.

Creating my school list was a difficult process filled with countless worries and fears, but I kept in mind the lessons I had learned over the years. I realized that taking risks was essential for growth. I decided to include a few reach schools, knowing that rejection was part of the journey. Instead of viewing these schools as insurmountable challenges, I began to see them as opportunities to push myself further. With this new mindset, I crafted my applications with passion and dedication. Each application became a reflection of my journey, filled with the lessons learned from overcoming my fears. As I submitted my final application, I felt a sense of accomplishment, knowing that I had embraced both my ambitions and the uncertainties ahead.

Swerling says she loves sharing her knowledge as a way of honoring the teachers at California’s Long Beach City College where she met a significant teacher, Alicia Annas, who helped her research the business and introduced her to friends in Hollywood.
A. Grateful. B. Annoyed. C. Regretful. D. Scared.
27. How did Esperanza impact Swerling?
A. It earned her a lot of money. B. It introduced her to many fabric designers.
C. It made her famous worldwide. D. It helped her break into the clothing industry.

D. Unclear.

A He was less likely to suffer age-related diseases.

注意:
1.续写词数应为80左右;
Creating my school list was a difficult process filled with countless worries and fears, but I kept in mind the lessons I had learned over the years.
