I was a junior professor, stressed and working myself to exhaustion both at work and at home.believed that success in academic required to give my all. My devotion brought me achievements in publications, and a university position. But I was still exhausted and upset by feelings of not being good enough when I compared myself with coworkers who were more productive and fathers who seemed to be better with their kids.
The turning point came a few years later during a conversation with a good friend. When I told him about my struggles, he questioned me whether doing better meant that I was not doing a good job. That helped me see that, apart from the occasional misstep, was doing well at my job and that my children were growing up in a loving home. I realized that what needed to change was not my work but my mentality.
I reflected on how I wanted to behave as a scientist and a teacher. Was this career about accumulating the largest number of publications? Did I want to be a teacher who was just absorbed in his world? The answer to both questions was negative. The process of transformation didn’t unfold as smoothly as expected, particularly when it came to overcoming negative thoughts, which required a significant amount of time. Nonetheless, the positive changes I made proved to be highly beneficial. I’ve also summarized three specific points that enable me to realize my intentions while also furthering my research and career, building personal connection, sharing ideas freely and being a reliable and fun operator. I’ve seen how working with co-workers, with whom I have a personal connection unlocks creativity and Drives progress.Such connections don’t form overnight, but when I take the time to strengthen them by sharing news and personal conversations, I know the time is well spent. My productivity hasn’t suffered; if anything, my research has benefited from increased activity and engagement.

C
Yatir is Israel’ s largest planted forest, located on the northwest edge of the Negev Desert. Four million trees, 90 percent of which are hardy Aleppo pine trees, spread over almost 12 square miles of semi-dry land. The trees are neither irrigated nor fertilized, yet somehow the forest has survived for almost 60 years. Yatir Forest proves we can prevent desertification, and heal the wounded earth.many locals said. But is it true?
“Fifteen years’ measurements in Yatir do show that the forest takes up a surprising amount of carbon,” said Rafat Oubaja, a Palestinian researcher. In satellite pictures, Yatir Forest forms a huge dark mass in the desert, meaning it absorbs more solar radiation. As is shown in the research findings.the darker Yatir Forest absorbs more energy, turns it into heat, and releases it back into the atmosphere, and it may take more than 200 years for the forest to have a net cooling effect-if it survives that long.
“Aleppo pine trees could grow rapidly on any kind of soil, but you don’t have to stick them in every place,” said Alon Rothschild, head of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI)
“Planting forests in naturally unforested open spaces, such as grasslands and shrublands, cause threats to native species, including endangered ground-nesting birds, which need open landscapes to dive for food. The heavy machinery used in tree planting can also damage fragile dry land soils, where insects, reptiles, and birds live.”
“Aleppo pine trees are hardy but also short-lived. Twenty to thirty years from now, the origin pine trees will be dead or dying, and there is very little regeneration of the forest,” said Klein, who suggested planting other trees, especially acacia trees (金合欢树). Acacia trees can tolerate extremely due to their long roots. “Under future drying and warming situations,” Klein and his co-author noted, “thinly scattered woodlands consisting of deep-rooted acacia might survive climate change better than dense forests.”
“I’ m sure that if no one touches the forest in 100 years, when you come to visit here, you’ ll sees one acacia trees standing,” Rotenberg said. “The forest won’t give up very easily.”
8. What does Yatir Forest mean to the locals?
A. It helps them survive starvation. B. It has an uncertain future.
C. ft brings hope for environmental recovery. D. It is quite a challenging process.
9. What can be known from researchers’ findings about Yatir Forest?
A. It has been out of control. B. It fails to cool the earth at present.
C. It absorbs much heat from the air. D. It’s expected to live over two centuries.
10. Which of the following may Alon Rothschild agree with?
A. There should be room for grasslands and shrublands.
B. The heavy machinery expands forest animals’ habitat.
C. Trees should be planted in naturally unforested open spaces.
D. The number of trees determines the quality of the environment.
11. How does Klein plan to guarantee the future of Yatir Forest?
A. By applying fertilizer regularly. B. By improving irrigation techniques.
C. By planting more adaptable tree species. D. By multiplying the diversity of animal species
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. C

Like many industries worldwide, Australia’s fruit-picking industry was impacted heavily during the COVID-19 pandemic, creating a shortage of workers in the labor market that would normally be filled by travelers looking to make money on the road. Local researchers came up with a partial solution to this problem, developing a fruit-picking robot that can harvest apples at a high speed.
Robots have benefited the world of agriculture in various ways, from inspecting crops and raising sheep to searching fields and removing weeds. We’ re also starting to see how they’ re playing a role in’ food production, with robots already appearing that can pick certain small pieces of fruit and harvest certain vegetables, or even shape fruit trees to keep them healthy and free from disease.
Researchers in Australia turned their attention to apples. The robot used a mix of cameras and deep learning algorithms (算法) to scan the trees in’ a field and detect the pieces of fruit, which required the robot to process information on their shape, the stem-branch joint’s location, etc. The robot collected apples with a specially designed soft “hand” with four fingers and a pneumatic sucking system (吸系统) that drew the apples from the branches into the “hand”.
The “hand” could reduce damage to the fruit and the tree itself to the smallest extent. Its sucking system could reduce the need for the “hand” to reach into the branches, thus inhibiting potential damage to its surroundings.
According to the research team, the robot could identify over 90 percent of apples within the view of its camera and a distance of around 1.2 m, And the machine could operate in all lighting and weather conditions, and required less than 200 milliseconds to process an apple’ s image. So far, there searchers have been conducting field trials, and they report the robot damaged less than 6 percent of its collected fruit.
12. What problem did Australia’s fruit industry face?
A. A growing demand for fruit. B. The decreased output of the fruit.
C. The rising cost of collecting fruit. D. A lack of fruit-collecting workers.
13. What can be concluded about robots from paragraph 2?
A. They are made in a shape of a tree.
B. They are widely applied in agriculture.
C. They have strengths and also weaknesses.
D. They are very efficient tools for harvesting crops.
14. Which word below can replace the underlined “inhibiting” in paragraph 4?
A. Causing. B. Preventing. C. Forbidding. D. Hiding.
15. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Robots can Help Pick Apples B. Robots will Replace Workers
C. Robots will Come to Market Soon D. Robots Can Pick Apples More Efficiently
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. B 15. A

Glitter (闪光纸屑) is widely used to decorate clothing, arts, and so on. During festivals and celebrations, it brings joy and excitement, creating a dazzling atmosphere that unites people in the celebration. ____16____ It is necessary to know why.
The problem with glitter is that it is a microplastic that doesn’t break down naturally. ____17____
And it makes products that you may normally wish to recycle, such as wrapping paper, no longer recyclable. This is why the UK government has put out guidance on festive waste, reminding households not to put shiny or glittery Christmas cards or wrapping paper in recycling bags.
Besides, due to its size, lots of plastic glitter will unavoidably make its way into water, rivers.and eventually the oceans. ___18___.This has been shown to significantly impact the reproduction rates of oysters and make other. animals less active, more likely to be eaten and less likely to thrive.
____19____ Increasing research shows glitter ends up back on our dinner tables. Aside from directly finding its way into our food from glittery cards and decorations, it’s consumed by fish, shellfish, seabirds and other marine life, thus passing through the food chain and eventually reaching us and harming our health.
While restricting glitter is only an extremely small step in addressing the broader microplastic problem, the European Union has taken the lead in this. Leading UK retailers such as Morrisons should be praised for taking a stand and going completely glitter free. ____20____ But if we are to protect our planet, no step is too small.
A. Marine life often mistakes it for food.
B. The glitter you used a decade ago probably still exists.
C. But it is now officially prohibited in the European Union.
D. More and more people are paying attention to food safety

At Crestwood High, two seniors stood out for their contrasting personalities: Thomas, a hardworking student, loved having a plan and sticking to it, while Jake, an easy-going basketball star seemed to get by with his natural talent, during the final year, neither of them expected how their interactions would shape their futures.
One autumn afternoon, the basketball team was preparing for the big championship in the gym.“Ley, Thomas! Why don’t you join the team? we could use someone smart like you to help wit strategy,” Jake called out to Thomas.
Thomas, absorbed in textbooks at a nearby table, looked up, clearly annoyed. “Very funny, Jake I’m focused on my studies, not your games,” he answered sharply, “Besides, who needs strategy when you’ve got talent?”
Jake laughed, not bothered by his response. “Talent only gets you so far, you know. You should try pushing your limits instead of hiding behind those books.”
As time went by, Thomas’s goal to keep his top grades began to weigh heavily on him. One night, he stayed up late studying, but soon felt too tired to continue. He suddenly found himself questioning if he was giving up too much just for good grades.
Meanwhile, Jake had his own stress. His team relied on him, but he felt the burden of expectations. Lying in bed, he thought about the championship game and his fear of letting everyone down. “What if l mess up?” His stomach tightened with worry.
Finally, the big day came. The gym was packed with students, all excited for the game. Thomas sat in the stand, his heart racing — not just from the game, but from his inner struggle. He had promised himself he wouldn’t let his grades slip, yet part of him longed to experience the excitement of supporting the team.
At first, Jake played well, but in the fourth quarter, his team was behind by ten points. He took a three-point shot that missed. In that moment, he felt the weight of the world on his shoulders. “What’s wrong with me?” he whispered to himself.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Thomas noticed Jake’s struggle and felt an urge to help. Despite his initial reluctance, he realized that Jake needed more than just talent to succeed. Thomas quickly grabbed a piece of paper and started jotting down some strategic ideas. He then rushed to the sidelines and caught Jake’s attention during a timeout. “Hey, Jake! I’ve got some ideas that might help,” Thomas shouted, waving the paper. Jake, surprised but grateful, nodded and motioned for him to come closer. Thomas explained his plan, focusing on how Jake could better position himself and his teammates to score. Jake listened intently, realizing that Thomas’s knowledge could be the key to their victory.
In the final seconds Jake had the ball, and the score was tied. His heart pounded as he recalled Thomas’s advice. He took a deep breath, focused on the goal, and made a swift move. The crowd held its breath as Jake took the shot. The ball arched through the air and swished through the net. The gym erupted in cheers as Crestwood High won the championship. Jake and Thomas embraced, both realizing that their combined efforts had made all the difference.

12 What problem did Australia’s fruit industry face?

E. It will take a long time to solve the problem of microplastics
F. Banning glitter obviously won’t completely save the climate or animals.
G. Glitter also contributes to the increasing microplastics inside human bodies.
