第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,共34分)
第一节(共12小题;每小题2分,共24分)
阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
My initial exploration of the world of comic books happened through the comic strips in newspapers. It began with a fondness for Garfield and his adventures, and led to the discovery of a range of comic books like Champak, Tintin, and Archie. They enabled me to enjoy myself in a world without iPads and the Internet ― just like so many of my friends who were fond of reading.
While my access to comics as a child was limited to what was printed in the newspaper, this changed once I grew older and started visiting bookstores to buy the books that I wanted to read. Having grown up on a diet of image-heavy books, I found the idea of reading text-only novels quite formidable. As I searched for books that lay somewhere in between, I came across a copy of Bhimayana ― a graphic novel. It felt familiar due to its comic-like theme and design. Plus, understanding complex narratives through pictures was relatively easier and more fun. And so, as I grew older, I found myself transitioning towards graphic novels from childish comic books.
Graphic novels dealt with serious topics in a more engaging manner. They would literally show me what was going on. For example, when I was reading Joe Sacco’s Palestine, I didn’t have to imagine the ruin caused by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I could actually see it while reading about it.
Fast-forward a few years to when I was given a copy of Jonathan Bloomfield’s Palestine: A Novel. Though I was impressed by the compelling (扣人心弦的) nature of storytelling in his book, I am not sure if I would have been able to visualize and enjoy his text-only version so much had I not read Sacco’s Palestine first. Thanks to the graphic novel, I had a “picture” of whatever had happened, and that made it easier and more fun to understand the details of the overall story.
From black and white strips and colorful comic books to illustrated graphic novels, this type of storytelling has come a long way. While my romance with comic books is still ongoing, in the long run, my love for graphic novels is more substantial and here to stay.
1. Why did the author turn to comic books as a child?
A. He found comic books interesting.
B. He had limited access to other books.
C. He wanted to be different from his friends.
D. He could relax from reading text-only books.
2. Which word can best explain the underlined word “formidable” in paragraph 2?
A Acceptable. B. Natural.
C Scary. D. Appealing.
3. What does the author say about reading Sacco’s Palestine?
A. It encouraged him to read more text-only novels.
B. It improved his understanding of Bloomfield’s book.
C. It introduced him to a compelling style of storytelling.
D. It changed his attitude to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
4. What does the author mainly talk about in the passage?
A. Comic books are more than comic.
B. Why he loves reading graphic novels.
C. Why he turned to serious novels eventually.
D. Picture books are here to stay for many reasons.

Metaura Pro claims to be the world’s first wearable air-conditioning device capable of constantly blowing cold air to keep the wearer cool.
Conventional wearable cooling systems only circulate the surrounding air, and thus don’t do a very good job of cooling people down. The stronger the wind blows, the hotter you get. This is definitely not what you want during those hot summer days. Metaura Pro, on the other hand, relies on a cooling solution to produce genuinely cold air that is 7 degrees Fahrenheit (华氏的) cooler than that of the surrounding area, in fan mode, and up to 18 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than the surrounding air, in cooling mode. The device has a smart app and relies on artificial intelligence to regulate air temperature.
Metaura Pro is driven by a powerful motor and its cooling modules are made up of 26 lightweight flat objects that wrap around the wearer’s neck and help to reduce heat. The motor is linked to a high-speed fan at the back of the device which also drives away some of that warm air around the neck. The device also has a VC plate, which has a liquid-cooled, heat-equalizing mechanism, efficiently creating a temperature differential between hot and cold temperatures.
“What sets Metaura Pro apart from the competition is that it produces genuinely cold air lower than the surrounding temperature, refreshing you during those dog days of summer,” the Metaura Pro Kickstarter crowdfunding page reads.
Metaura Pro not only supplies a cooling function, but also has the capacity for heating as well in winter, it can be used to warm your body to a comfortable temperature, when the surrounding air feels cold.
The device intelligently monitors itself, so when you take it off, it recognizes that it is no longer in use and will automatically shut off and switch to standby mode to save power consumption. Metaura Pro wearable collar is powered by a chargeable battery that can provide only 3 hours of cooling on a single charge. The device weighs 435 grams, which is not heavy, but definitely noticeable.
5. How does Metaura Pro manage to keep people cool?
A. By dropping the body temperature.
B. By circulating the surrounding air.
C. By producing lower-temperature air.
D. By blowing the strong wind around.
6. What is mainly discussed about Metaura Pro in paragraph 3?
A. Its internal structure. B. Its operating costs.
C. Its amazing function. D. Its working principle.
7. What may be the disadvantage of the device?
A. It puts limitation on cooling function.
B. It switches to different modes by hand.
C. It possesses a relatively short battery life.
D. It depends much on outdoor temperatures.
8. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. A double-mode smart phone app
B. A cooling air-conditioning system
C. A rechargeable battery for e-products
D. A wearable temperature-adjusting device
C
Vast plains of solar panels can help nature more than clean energy: As populations of crucial pollinators (虫媒) decline, developers have been seeding the grounds of their solar arrays (阵列) with native wildflowers. Now a five-year study published in Environmental Research Letters, confirms that this approach boosts the pollinators’ abundance and diversity —— with spillover benefits for surrounding farms.
From 2018 through 2022, Argonne National Laboratory landscape ecologist Leroy J. Walston and his colleagues regularly visited two such arrays covering hectares (公顷) each in southern Minnesota. The scientists recorded the number and kinds of pollinators the wildflowers attracted and found populations of bees, beetles, butterflies, moths, and more had increased on-site —— even as they continued declining elsewhere in the U. S.
Humans’ pesticide use, greenhouse gas emissions and habitat destruction have caused mass pollinator die-offs. Monarch butterfly numbers, for example, have decreased by 80 percent nationwide in the past two decades, and according to the Center for Biological Diversity’s 2017 report, nearly one in four native bee species is endangered and at increasing risk of extinction. Further big losses would be disastrous for ecosystems and agriculture: 75 percent of North American plant species rely on pollinators.
The federal government’s energy goals require several million hectares for solar energy, with more than 80 percent of the projects planned for former agricultural land; seeding it this way could help save endangered pollinators.
During their study, Walston and his team watched goldenrod soldier beetles boom as their namesake flower, goldenrod bloomed around the arrays. As other flowers bloomed,a symphony of insects appeared. Native bees saw the most stunning growth, with their population increasing 20 times by the study’s end. Monarch butterflies also increased in number and fluttered their dotted wings across the sites. Twice as many bees visited soybean fields close to the solar sites as fields farther away, making the nearby plots’ gains comparable to those of neighboring land enrolled in conservation programs.
The approach’s efficacy in other parts of the country— such as the desert Southwest — remains to be seen. Nevertheless, as Walston says, at least in the Midwest, “if you plant it, yeah, they’ll come.”
9. What does the 5-year study focus on?
A. The number of pollinators. B. The influence of solar panels on insects.
C. The effect of wildflower seeding project. D. The exploitation of alternative clean energy.
10. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Native bee species are in danger of dying out.
B. Pollinator populations are decreasing at an alarming rate.
C. Northern American agriculture falls victim to solar panels.
D. The government is taking measures to meet the demands for solar energy.
11. Why does the author mention goldenrod soldier beetles in paragraph 4?
A. To highlight the ecological crisis.
B. To illustrate a mutually beneficial relationship.
C. To prove the success of conservation programs.
D. To indicate the outcome the wildflower planting.
12. What does the underlined word “efficacy” in paragraph 5 most probably mean?
A. Effectiveness. B. Limitation. C. Response. D. Risk.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
It is natural to compare ourselves to others and to get caught in a mental comparison loop, and yet this seldom is beneficial. You may have heard the expression, “____13____” To me, this rings true as I have found it is quite difficult to compare myself to others and feel satisfied at the same time.
Comparison not only robs us of delight, but it also fuels self-criticism and a lack of self-acceptance. ____14____ “I am not as successful, competent, attractive as they are.” “Why don’t I have what they have?” We use comparison as an avenue for self-criticism, “What’s wrong with me? I must be an exact loser.” This hinders self-acceptance.
We often tell ourselves we are acceptable only if we meet certain standards, and we evaluate how we measure up by looking at others. The tendency is to conclude that we are not measuring up, particularly if we have a low sense of self-worth. ____15____ We don’t just ask ourselves, “What’s wrong with me?” We worry what others will think: “What’s wrong with them?” The looming sense of possible rejection creates uneasiness and anxiety.
____16____ It tells us that if we meet the expectations, lose weight, get a promotion, or buy a new house, we will feel better, calmer, more self-assured, and stop comparing ourselves. This may be temporarily true, yet, a comparison is an internal process that is ultimately based on our thoughts and sense of self, not external circumstances. We can always find something else to compare, another expectation we tell ourselves we are not meeting. ____17____ So comparison can destroy our awareness of personal values gradually.
To stop comparing ourselves to others, we have to recognize that the comparison game is unwinnable and stop playing.
A. No comparison, no life.
B. Comparison is the thief of joy.
C. Comparison can even be misleading.
D. We are focused on others and not on what is meaningful to us.
E. Typically, comparison will lead to feeling inadequate or inferior.
F. Shift from being guided by comparison to being guided by values.
G. And we fear that we are going to be judged by our perceived failures.

第二节(满分25分)
60. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
For years, swimming was one of those things where I thought: “I’m not good at it, and I never will be.” That thought lingered there most of my childhood.
This all changed last year when the company I worked for announced that they were going to arrange a swimrun, a race where you partially swim and partially run to finish the race. Of course, it was a voluntary activity and I was not going to participate.
However, as the weeks progressed, I started thinking to myself. “What would it feel like to break through my comfort zone and finally face my insecurity?” To help the swimrun participants prepare for the race, the company arranged an opportunity to learn how to swim freestyle with a swim instructor. I ultimately decided to at least participate in the first swimming lesson.
I was mentally prepared to be the worst student during the lesson. However, as it turned out, I had plenty of co-workers that were equally bad at swimming. After a few swimming lessons, I even got compliments for how quickly I managed to improve. Not only had I shattered my old belief about my disability in water, but something else had started to stir. I had gotten a taste for swimming and was curious to see where it could lead me. “How would it feel like to be completely comfortable in the water?” I wondered.
I started going to the public bathhouse to practice the few tips I had gotten from the swimming instructor. I’d watch YouTube videos and try and mimic the movements by myself in the water to the best of my abilities.
Without a doubt - in the beginning, I looked like a drowning monkey. I would swim; I would sink, coughing up water, and repeat it all over again. I’d get yelled at for swimming too slow at the freestyle range. However, I focused on the process and the soon-to-be new skillset that I did not get discouraged by the slow progress nor the occasional scolding.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】My Perspective on Online Leaning
Hello everyone. It is my privilege to deliver a speech themed “online learning”.
It is widely accepted that online learning bas its advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, smart online learners can make full use of the most extensive educational resources to broaden the horizon. On the other hand, learning online can also provide an opportunity for misusing the web, thereby wasting a significant amount of time on video games and virtual “friendships”. Weighing the advantages against the disadvantages, I suggest we set a clear schedule of our daily study plan and meanwhile it is advisable that we keep a cool mind of the treasures of the Internet and cast away the trash of false virtual dirt.
Let’s be smart online learners! Thanks for listening.

【答案】 The thought of gliding through water effortlessly was what kept me going. At a certain point, I hit a plateau, So, I decided to contact my swimming instructor for more swimming lessons. Under his guidance, I started to practice more by myself. Some days, I would come back seriously wondering if my body constitution was meant for swimming at all. On other days, I would feel fantastic while completing my laps. Still, there was one single thing that stood out during my practice sessions: while repeating thousands and thousands of crawling strokes, I slowly but surely started to enjoy the process of swimming thoroughly.
Regarding the swimrun, I eventually decided to participate. For me, this challenge was pushing me to my limits, as I had been utterly scared to confront this weakness of mine. The race began, and soon I was completely breathless from the physical exertion. However, I solely focused on all the movements I had been practicing repetitively throughout the summer. Before I knew it, I had finished. The swimrun had been my end goal but I already knew by then that I was going to continue swimming. I wished my childhood self could meet my present-day self to see that I was not naturally bad at swimming. It was possible to change and surpass the boundaries of my comfort zone.

haven't been on for a while, and sorry my house is such a mess, but it's been a busy summer.
Anyway today I want to talk about a new project.or a new goal, really. It's called a
buy-nothing year.and it's just an attempt not to buy anything new for an entire year.Sound
easy?I didn't think so.A close friend of mine just finished her buy-nothing year, and although
she did pretty well, she did end up buying a couple of new things.including a new dress -but
it was designed by a friend of hers.and she felt she had to buy it.But the other difficulty my
friend ran into is things going wrong in the cause. Some of her electrical wiring needed to be
replaced,and you can't exactly use second-hand wiring.right?Anyway,the advantages of
doing this are obvious-eutting down on rubbish in the landfills.more money saved.and
more free time, since you don't have to spend all that time shopping for new clothes
