When people say Chinese culture, we often think of paper cutting. Paper cutting is an art form with a long history in China. Traditional paper—cuts were first put on windows for decoration (装饰). That’s why paper—cuts are also called “window flowers”. Most paper—cuts are made of red paper, because red means good luck in Chinese culture. Today, people use paper—cuts to decorate not only windows, but also doors and other furniture. Sometimes, people use them as gifts.
Paper—cuts are popular because of their expressions of good wishes and hopes. During the Spring Festival, for example, many people put up paper—cuts of the Chinese character (汉字) “Fu” upside down on the door. They hope it can bring them good luck. At wedding ceremonies (婚礼), you can always see paper—cuts of the character “Xi”. It means that the new couple can enjoy happiness together.
Paper cutting has developed into different styles in different parts of China. Paper—cuts from the north of China usually have interesting shapes. In southern China, people prefer paper—cuts with the themes (主题) of flowers, fruit, birds and fish.
It’s very easy to learn paper cutting. With a piece of paper and a knife or a pair of scissors, you can try to make your own paper—cuts. Although paper cutting is easy to start with, you need a lot of practice and imagination to become really good at it.

Whether yellow, red or white, the onion is a vegetable that you may not know well. The list of its uses in cooking is endless. People have used onions to add flavor (味道) to their foods for thousands of years. Besides onions’ great taste, they are very good for you. They have special chemicals (化学物质) that improve your ability to fight off sickness and you have fewer chances of getting a disease.
No matter how good onions are for you, it is difficult to cut an onion without your eyes filling with tears! When you cut into an onion, irritating (刺激性的) chemicals inside the onion will get into the air. They touch your whole eyes and cause pain. Your eyes make tears to wash away the chemicals and protect your eyes.
Luckily, cooks and scientists have discovered some ways to keep you from crying when you cut up onions:
● Cut the onion under running water. The water will wash away the chemicals before they can reach your eyes.
● Use a fan to blow air over the onion as you cut it. The air will blow the chemicals away from your eyes.
● Put the onion in a fridge for an hour before cutting. This helps make the chemicals in the onion move slowly, so they may not ever reach your eyes.
If you try out these good ideas and still cry while cutting onions, don’t worry. Scientists think if you cut more onions, your body will become more resilient to the onion’s chemicals. So the tears will not last long. If you think about how healthy onions are, you might even call those tears “happy tears”.

It’s the eighth autumn since my father died. I don’t remember him saying “I love you.” in Chinese, his mother tongue. In the past, we always had a few communication problems. But when he introduced me to fries, ice creams, and sugary drinks in his love language, it didn’t seem to matter, even though his English wasn’t good, or my Chinese was bad.
Junk food became our secret language: some chicken nuggets (鸡块) and chips on a camping trip, a Happy Meal on our fishing trip; two liters of Cola before my mother came home. I felt honored (荣幸的) until I began to understand that he kept secrets from me too.
In the third grade, I came home and told him the dangers of cigarettes. He promised to stop smoking, but I kept smelling smoke in his clothes and car. My father was not virtuous (道德高尚的). He was a man of quick pleasure: fast food, cigarettes... I didn’t understand why he kept on these. I didn’t ask him why. I had plans for my future, I promised to never be addicted (上瘾) to smoking or drinking.
My father died at 49. I was sad that I never fully knew him. I used to be angry with my father for his bad habits. But the older I get, the more I see myself compromising (妥协的) too. And so, each autumn, I think: now I’m at the age at which my father followed his wife to a country where he didn’t speak the language; now I’m at the age at which he was fired from his job...
I can imagine the difficulties my father must have when he moved to the US. I can imagine how excited he felt to discover a place like McDonald’s. It’s his preferred place of everyday life. It was cheaper than fish, and much simpler than a long-distance phone call to Beijing, in which he had to hide his difficulties and his loneliness.
I can imagine how it might be happier to eat golden nuggets, even if they finally shorten our lives by a day or a week or a year—because first we have to get through this day, this week, this year.
The next time I think of my father, I’ll have a nugget or two or four. And in that moment, I will understand my father completely.

阅读下面短文,根据其内容完成后面各项任务。
Sometimes, on grey, rainy days, your mood level is lower than on bright, sunny days. Would you like to know more about how the weather can affect how you feel?
According to a recent study, there’s a connection between weather and moods. Going to a warm place in the middle of winter can make our moods better. Pleasant weather has been proved(证实) to improve moods and memory. However, very hot weather can make us feel more tired and bored.
In the study people who spent time outdoors in warm weather were happier than those who spent all day inside. They also found better memory scores when they ran tests comparing the two groups.
对人类来说最好的温度大约是22.2°C。 That explains why people in southern California are happy all the time. To improve moods, a person must spend at least 30 minutes outside in warm sunny weather. Spending time indoors when the weather outside is so nice tends to lower moods. It’s mostly because we don’t like to be inside when spring time arrives. It can also make inside activities seem boring.
Maybe the activities connected with being outside affect our moods. Warm weather is connected with the beach, fun outdoor sports and so on. It brings back childhood memories of playing outside all day.
Of course, we can wake up every day and decide how we’ll feel that day. If it’s rainy that won’t necessarily make us unhappy. We’ll just have to bring our umbrellas out and cheer up those who are feeling sad!
