1. Why do the people at the hotel mistake the man for Henry Adams?
The hotel staff are looking for a wealthy American who looks poor. When the man walks up to the hotel, he puts his bag down and stands next to a horse-drawn cab (马车). The staff then makes the natural mistake of assuming that he is the wealthy American, as he looks poor, yet it looks like he has gotten out of an expensive cab.

Wait cabbie.
Good afternoon, sir. Allow me. Er, this way, sir, you’re expected.
If you please, sir.
…quite the most comfortable room I’ve had. I’m so glad. Thank you...
Excuse me. Good afternoon, sir, good afternoon. Welcome to Bumbles. Parsons, whatever’s come over you? Carry the gentleman’s case.
Yes, sir. Certainly, sir.
Parsons, get up at once! This way, sir, if you please… We are most honored that you are staying with us, sir, and we can assure you of every comfort.
Read together.
Good afternoon, sir, and welcome.
Wilcox, the register.
Yes, sir.
If you’d kindly sign, sir. Just here, sir.
Thank you very much, sir.
And now if we’ll step this way, we have reserved for you the bridal suite.
Excuse me, sir.
Now what do you suppose he uses that for?
Pick it up, Parsons, pick it up! Hehehe, there’s nothing we of the old country like so much as a good sense of humor.
This way, sir, please.
My apologies, sir. I trust there’s no damage. If you would care to replace it in the case, we will have it taken up to your suite.
This is Bumbles.
Yes, sir.
The manager is expecting you… Excuse me, sir.
This is Mr Henry Adams, sir.
Adams? Did you say Adams?
That’s right. I understand I’m expected here.
Oh, Mr. Adams, I apologise profusely. There’s been a most unfortunate misunderstanding. You’re an imposter! Parsons, I'm surprised at you! Perhaps you’ll have the goodness to leave. I said “would you mind leaving?” If you would just sign the register…
Whoa, whoa, what’s going on here?
Just a mistake with the commissionaire. Get rid of him. The foolish fellow mistook him for you, Mr Adams. Quite unforgivable!
Excuse me!
Hop it. This way, please.
Fetch the police, Williams! The police!
No, no, just a minute. I don’t think we need the police. I’d like to have a talk with this gentleman. You can’t talk? Well, it doesn’t affect your drinking habits, does it? Good. Ah, perhaps you’ll be kind enough to lead the way for us.
Certainly, Mr. Adams. Attend to the bodies instantly. This way, sir.
Laryngitis? Oh, uh, you’re a boxer? Strongman. Well, vaudeville? Oh, um, the circus? Well, What do you know about that?
After you watch
1. Why do people treat Henry and the man differently at the hotel?
2. Do you think “money makes the world go around”? Why or why not?
Discuss the following questions with your classmates.
1. Why do people treat Henry and the man differently at the hotel?
People often show favoritism to the wealthy and despise (鄙视) the poor. In part, this is because they are looking for some financial advantage for themselves. People also act this way because they suppose that a wealthy person is cleverer and morally better than they are, and assume that a poor person must not be as smart or moral.
22
2. Do you think “money makes the world go around”? Why or why not?
People need money to live. There is no doubt about that. However, there are other things that people need more, especially love and friendship. A poor person might be able to survive if he has friends and loved ones, but even a wealthy person will have trouble surviving without them.
23
1. Watch the film The Million Pound Bank Note.
2. Make a three-minute presentation talking about the value of money based on your understanding.
