There is already much evidence that volunteering benefits adults’ physical and mental health. Now, scientists have found similar links to both physical and mental health in adolescents.
A 2023 analysis found that among more than 50,000 adolescents in the National Survey of Children’s Health, young people who had participated in community service or had volunteered over the previous 12 months were more likely to be in good health and stayed calm and in control when faced with challenges, and the adolescents were less likely to be anxious.
Admittedly, those findings are only correlations (相关性). “It could be that the children who were volunteering were already in great health,” says study co-leader Kevin Lanza. But because of an alarming rise in mental health issues among young people, he believes that the early findings are promising enough to dig into. A 2021 report warned that the percentage of young people suffering from constant sadness or hopelessness had increased by 40 percent over the previous decade.
When looking for ways to address it, researchers point to the role of “contribution” - providing support or resources to others or helping to achieve a shared goal - as an important piece of social and emotional development for adolescents. Young people have a developmental need to connect and belong. “Part of the exploration of adolescence and young adulthood is figuring out where you can be needed and useful - arguably key aspects of our mental health,” says developmental psychologist Andrew Fuligni.
Volunteering is one good way young people can contribute. The importance of mattering to others and to the larger world translates really well to the needs of adolescents to have a meaningful role to play in their community.
However, there may be a potential disadvantage of volunteering. Scientists have found that young people’s mental health can suffer if they feel their contributions are thought lowly of because of their sex, racial or ethnic identity or they are forced to participate. Thus, adults can help by offering choices and by vetting (审查) volunteer opportunities to be sure that organizations are well run and equipped to offer a good experience.
4. What does Lanza think about the findings in 2023?
A. They are valuable and worth further exploration.
B. They discover teenagers face more mental health issues.
C. They show volunteering increases adults’ overall well-being.
D. They prove the willingness to volunteer determines children’s health.
5. How does “contribution” address adolescents’ mental problems?
A. By curing them of the mental problems.
B. By helping them gain praise and support.
C. By enabling them to find a sense of purpose.
D. By meeting the need of more volunteers now.
6. Who may suffer from volunteering according to the text?
A. John, a disabled boy who did community service work.
B. Taylor, a black girl who was praised for helping others.
C. Tom, a kind child who helped in a school as a volunteer.
D. Jessica, a high school student who hesitated to volunteer.
7. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The importance of doing voluntary working.
B. The approach to volunteering by contributing.
C. The seriousness of adolescents’ mental health issues.
D. The impact of volunteering on adolescents’ mental health.
A 5. C 6. D 7. D

根据第三段“Admittedly, those findings are only correlations. “It could be that the children who were volunteering were already in great health,” says study co-leader Kevin Lanza. But because of an alarming rise in mental health issues among young people, he believes that the early findings are promising enough to dig into. (诚然,这些发现只是相关性。该研究的共同负责人凯文·兰扎说:“可能是那些参加志愿活动的孩子们已经非常健康了。”但由于年轻人中心理健康问题的惊人增长,他相信早期的发现是有希望深入研究的。)”可知,凯文·兰扎认为2023年的研究发现说明了参加志愿活动与青少年身体健康之间存在相关性,是有价值的,并且值得进一步研究。故选A项。
根据第四段“When looking for ways to address it, researchers point to the role of “contribution”- providing support or resources to others or helping to achieve a shared goal - as an important piece of social and emotional development for adolescents. Young people have a developmental need to connect and belong. (在寻找解决方法时,研究人员指出,“贡献”的作用——为他人提供支持或资源,或帮助实现共同的目标——是青少年社会和情感发展的重要组成部分。年轻人有联系和归属感的发展需求。)”及第五段“Volunteering is one good way young people can contribute. The importance of mattering to others and to the larger world translates really well to the needs of adolescents to have a meaningful role to play in their community. (志愿服务是年轻人可以做出贡献的一个好方法。对他人和更大的世界的重要性很好地转化为青少年在他们的社区中扮演有意义的角色的需求。)”可知,通过为他人做出贡献,即参与志愿服务,青少年找到了目标感和归属感,从而有助于他们的心理健康。故选C项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“However, there may be a potential disadvantage of volunteering. Scientists have found that young people’s mental health can suffer if they feel their contributions are thought lowly of because of their sex, racial or ethnic identity or they are forced to participate. (然而,志愿服务可能有一个潜在的缺点。科学家发现,如果年轻人觉得自己的贡献因为性别、种族或民族身份而被轻视,或者他们被迫参与,他们的心理健康就会受到影响。)”可知,被迫参与是影响年轻人参与志愿活动的一个因素,故在志愿服务上犹豫不决的高中生杰西卡可能会遭受志愿服务的痛苦。故选D项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“There is already much evidence that volunteering benefits adults’ physical and mental health. Now, scientists have found similar links to both physical and mental health in adolescents. (已经有很多证据表明,志愿服务有益于成年人的身心健康。现在,科学家们在青少年的身体和心理健康方面都发现了类似的联系。)”及第二段“A 2023 analysis found that among more than 50,000 adolescents in the National Survey of Children’s Health, young people who had participated in community service or had volunteered over the previous 12 months were more likely to be in good health and stayed calm and in control when faced with challenges, and the adolescents were less likely to be anxious. (2023年的一项分析发现,在全国儿童健康调查中,在5万多名青少年中,在过去的12个月里参加过社区服务或志愿服务的年轻人更有可能身体健康,在面对挑战时保持冷静和控制,青少年不太可能焦虑。)”并结合全文内容可知,文章主要介绍了志愿服务对青少年心理健康的影响。故选D项。

Automation(自动化)is increasingly affecting many fields, causing debates like“Are Robots Coming for Your Job?” While many believe that creativity and artistic taste remain unique to human beings, advances in artificial intelligence(AI,人工智能)challenge this idea.
For example, at Rutgers University's Art and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, AI has been developed to produce beautiful, original paintings. Similarly, Amper Music offers AI-driven music creation services. Users can choose the instruments, speed, and length of the piece, and the software produces an original piece that is also "performed"and "mixed"by AI.
Amper's software is great at creating background music suitable for reality TV shows, online videos, and student films. It focuses on the market for ready-made music. These Al-created art and music are polished and attractive, but they raise important questions: What is the value of art when it can be produced in large quantities without human effort?
Consider the Mona Lisa: its value comes partly from its scarcity — there is only one original. In contrast, Amper can create a new high-quality music piece every time you click, and Elgammal's AI painter can produce thousands of unique artworks rapidly. This situation creates a mixed world where art remains unique yet easily produced. It makes us wonder whether people should pay for such works and what their prices should be.
This issue is real, not imaginary. Spotify recently attracted AI researcher Francois Pachet, who used to work at Sony, to develop tools for human composers(作曲家).However, there have been reports that Spotify's playlists included music from artists who don't actually exist, possibly allowing Spotify to avoid paying royalties (版税).While Spotify says the tracks were created by real people using fake(假的)names, there are still worries about whether AI could be used to produce free music, which could harm human musicians.
As machines and technology start to replace many jobs, even creative fields like art and music are affected. This raises questions about the need for rules or groups to protect artists and whether society will continue to value human-made art more than machine-made creations. Ultimately, we must consider the effects of AI in art and music—who should get recognition when an AI-created piece wins awards like the Grammys?
8. What challenges the idea that creativity and artistic taste are unique to human beings?
A. Robots doing physical tasks. B. AI making progress.
C. Robots learning to debate. D. AI knowing painting.
9. What does the underlined word"scarcity"in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Having high quality. B. Being extremely hard to get.
C. Having natural beauty. D. Being impossible to copy
10. What does Francois Pachet do at Spotify?
A. Creating playlists. B. Producing free music.
C. Paying royalties. D. Creating tools to help musicians.
11. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Confidence of humans'artistic ability B. Ways to promote AI-created art.
C. Concerns about using AI in creative fields. D. The need for AI with human feelings.
B 9. B 10. D 11. C

It’s good to share, right? Growing up as kids we are told to share our toys and not to be selfish. We also live in an age when discussing our feelings is encouraged. But with new crazes becoming popular all the time, such as dance challenges and wearing a pillow (枕头) as a dress, the question is: when can sharing become oversharing on social media?
Oversharing has become connected with social media, but isn’t unique to it. Imagine you head to a party and meet someone. Within five minutes they have given away very detailed information about their life. While some of us may try to escape these people, according to marriage expert Carolyn Cole, this form of oversharing could come from a strong desire to get close to someone. A painful developmental story lies behind the behaviour. People share too much because they have been too lonely. But they fail to understand the risks resulting from it.
Dr Christopher Hand, a lecturer in cyberpsychology (网络心理学), says the more details people disclose, the less sympathy (同情) we express when things go wrong. This could be due to a belief that more negative experiences will be attracted if shared more. It seems that sadfishing, the idea of seeking sympathy by oversharing, is generally regarded as negative rather than the cry for help.
However, Dr Hand’s research also seems to suggest that the more we post online, the more socially attractive we become on condition that the posts we share are positive. Even back in 2015, Gwendolyn Seidman PhD, said we should avoid complaining too much and being negative online. We should also avoid showing off, especially about our love lives. It makes sense— if your love lives are going ‘that well’, would you really have time to share a photo with text?
So, how can you know if you are oversharing? Well, why not ask your friends in real life? They would be happy to tell you if your posts about your breakfast or your complaints about your lack of money really are too much.
12. Which of the following is a kind of oversharing?
A. Disclosing personal details quickly at a party. B. Discussing our feelings online.
C. Sharing our toys with kids unselfishly. D. Recording our feelings in the diary.
13. Why do people share too much according to Carolyn Cole?
A. To satisfy their psychological needs. B. To overcome the sense of failure.
C. To show their feeling of sympathy. D. To develop a painful story.
14. What do you know about sadfishing?
A. It is an idea of sharing positive experiences. B. It is generally thought of as a cry for help.
C. It is seen as a positive way to seek help. D. It is intended to attract sympathy.
15. What does the underlined sentence imply in Paragraph 4?
A. People having good love lives are too busy to post online.
B. Sharing photos and texts about love lives makes sense.
C. People won’t have successful love if posting it online.
D. Good love lives shouldn’t be shared on social media.
A 13. A 14. D 15. A

根据第二段中“While some of us may try to escape these people, according to marriage expert Carolyn Cole, this form of oversharing could come from a strong desire to get close to someone. (根据婚姻专家Carolyn Cole的说法,虽然我们中的一些人可能会试图逃离这些人,但这种过度分享的形式可能来自想要接近某人的强烈愿望)”可知,Carolyn Cole认为人们过度分享可能是为了满足想要接近他人的心理需求。故选A项。
根据第三段中“It seems that sadfishing, the idea of seeking sympathy by oversharing, is generally regarded as negative rather than the cry for help. (似乎卖惨,即通过过度分享来寻求同情的想法,通常被认为是消极的,而不是寻求帮助)”可知,卖惨是为了吸引同情。故选D项。
【15题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中“We should also avoid showing off, especially about our love lives. It makes sense— if your love lives are going ‘that well’, would you really have time to share a photo with text? (我们也应该避免炫耀,尤其是我们的爱情生活。这是有道理的——如果你们的爱情生活“那么顺利”,你们真的有时间用文字分享一张照片吗)”可推知,此处先提到应避免炫耀爱情生活,然后用反问的修辞手法暗示,那些拥有美好爱情生活的人太忙了,没有时间在网上发帖。故选A项。

Whether you’re looking to lose a few pounds, spend more time at the gym or learn a language, turning bad habits into good ones is all about self-control. Some of us have more than others. And research shows that those with more self-control tend to be happier. But the problem is that we usually only get rewarded in the future. ____16____
Michael Inzlicht is a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto and a self-control researcher. He says that the ironic thing about self-control is that those who are really good at it don’t have to practice it. ____17____ When you love and desire something that tends to be better for you, like studying, working hard or exercising, for example, you don’t have to think about doing it. Inzlicht says that these types of individuals generally have what’s called “trait self-control” meaning it’s an aspect of their personality.
When it comes to improving self-control, Inzlicht says it’s difficult to change the personality that you’re born with. ____18____ A wide body of research shows that you can improve self-control for a particular behavior you want to change or a habit you’d like to develop. For example, Inzlicht says that when we get paid to make life changes, we’re more likely to make them. Some gyms will charge you a certain amount of money for a year-long membership and then give you a few cents back every time you come. ____19____
____20____ Part of failing at developing self-control is in getting frustrated at yourself for not changing overnight. If you’re building self-control in losing weight, for instance, don’t try switching to nothing but fruits and vegetables all at once because it’s too dramatic a change — not to mention unsustainable.
A. However, this doesn’t mean you can do nothing about it.
B. Another tip for success, says Inzlicht, is making gradual steps.
C. Even a small amount of money can encourage people to work out.
D. They can maintain the good habits all the time without much effort.
E. Thus, we are constantly weighing whether to wait or to have it right now.
F. Don’t be afraid of frustration, since it is necessary for your improvement.
G. Actually, self-control improvement can bring about benefits to all individuals.
E 17. D 18. A 19. C 20. B

前文“And research shows that those with more self-control tend to be happier. But the problem is that we usually only get rewarded in the future. (研究表明,自控能力强的人往往更快乐。但问题是,我们通常只在未来得到奖励)”指出自控能力强可以带来快乐,但这种快乐在未来才能得到,因此E项“Thus, we are constantly weighing whether to wait or to have it right now. (因此,我们不断地权衡是等待还是现在就拥有它)”符合语境,表明我们会纠结于是自控以得到未来的快乐,还是不自控现在就获得快乐,是前文矛盾的结果,承接前文。故选E。
【17题详解】
前文“He says that the ironic thing about self-control is that those who are really good at it don’t have to practice it. (他说,具有讽刺意味的是,那些真正擅长自我控制的人并不需要练习自我控制)”指出擅长自控的人不需要练习自控,后文“When you love and desire something that tends to be better for you, like studying, working hard or exercising, for example, you don’t have to think about doing it. (当你喜欢并渴望一些对你更好的事情时,比如学习、努力工作或锻炼,你不必考虑去做)”用具体的例子说明这种自控可以自然发生,因此D项“They can maintain the good habits all the time without much effort. (他们可以毫不费力地一直保持好习惯)”符合语境,说明这样的人可以轻松保持好习惯,是对前文的解释,后文是对其例证,选项中的They指代前文的those who are really good at it。故选D。
18题详解】
前文“When it comes to improving self-control, Inzlicht says it’s difficult to change the personality that you’re born with. (说到提高自我控制能力,Inzlicht说,很难改变你与生俱来的性格)”指出提高自控力很困难,后文“A wide body of research shows that you can improve self-control for a particular behavior you want to change or a habit you’d like to develop. (大量的研究表明,你可以提高你想要改变的特定行为或你想要养成的习惯的自制力)”说明特定行为或习惯的自控力是可以提升的,因此A项“However, this doesn’t mean you can do nothing about it. (然而,这并不意味着你对此无能为力)”符合语境,指出提高自控力也是有办法的,和前文构成转折,引出后文,其中的this指代前一句话。故选A。
前文“For example, Inzlicht says that when we get paid to make life changes, we’re more likely to make them. Some gyms will charge you a certain amount of money for a year-long membership and then give you a few cents back every time you come.
后文“Part of failing at developing self-control is in getting frustrated at yourself for not changing overnight. If you’re building self-control in losing weight, for instance, don’t try switching to nothing but fruits and vegetables all at once because it’s too dramatic a change — not to mention unsustainable.

Sitting for a long time and lack of sleep were damaging in their own way, but when combined with more traditional risk factors, ____38____had a multiplier effect that made an early death far more likely.
The findings, published in the journal PLOS Medicine, make clear that “some risk behaviors tend to come together and ____39____the joint risk could be much higher than the sum of the individual risks”.
For instance, smoking was the most dangerous risk factor among the six studied. The small number of people for ____40____smoking was their only bad habit were 90 percent more likely to die during the course of the study than were people with practiced clean living in every aspect. People who reported high alcohol consumption as their only risk factor did not seem ____41____ (put) their lives in danger. But for those who combined heavy drinking with smoking, the risk of premature death was doubled. And when lack of sleep ____42____(add) to the mix, the likelihood of an early death was nearly five times ____43____ (great) even though lack of sleep by itself had only a light effect____44____ death.
Considering factors such as age, gender, education and other factors, the researchers saw ____45____ clear pattern. It was a person’s bad lifestyle that contributed to his or her risk of premature death.

分析句子成分可知,but后的分句中,主句缺少主语,结合句意应为代词they指代前文提到的“Sitting for a long time”和“lack of sleep”。故填they。
故填that。
固定搭配seem to do sth. “似乎做某事”。因“大量饮酒”动作与“生命置于危险之中”动作先后情况不明显,所以可以用to do;也可以用to be doing表示前后动作几乎同时进行;也可用to have done表示先后动作顺序。故填to put/to be putting/to have put。
故填was added。
有影响”应用have an effect on。故填on。

I liked things going according to my plans. But lately there had been lots of troubles in my life. My daughter Gabby had a disease, making it difficult for me to focus on my job. One day, I went for a walk on the beach. It was something I’d been too busy to do before. As I slowly walked, looking at the blue sky and sea, my mood gradually lightened.
On my way home, I came across an art supply store. Attracted by the beautiful decorations, I walked inside. I hadn’t painted since I was a child, and I had already forgotten what most of the tools were for. Therefore, I decided to leave after a while. Just then, a young man approached and asked whether I needed any help. I wanted to say no and get out of the store. But soon I changed my mind and replied, “I would like to paint, but I don’t know what to buy.”
“My dad is an artist. I can show you everything you need,” the young man offered. He carefully picked out a set of paints and recommended brushes and other necessary things. “Have fun!” he added before I left. “I expect you to show me a painting the next time you come in here.”
I smiled weakly. Not likely, I thought. Yet that night, after Gabby went to sleep, I set up the easel (画架) and the tools in the dining room and decided to give it a try. What should I paint? I closed my eyes. Suddenly, I could imagine the blueness of the sky connected with the deeper, darker shades (色调) of the sea. I took a deep breath and began to draw.
I kept painting for the next few weeks. Whenever I felt stressed, I painted, and then I could forget all my troubles. I used my phone to take pictures of my paintings, so I could carry that feeling of peace with me. One afternoon, when I ran out of canvases (画布), I returned to the store to get some more.

Paragraph 1: The young man who had helped me before recognized me. “You’re back! ” he greeted me warmly and asked about my painting progress. I hesitantly showed him some photos of my work on my phone. He admired them carefully and said, “These drawings are amazing! You’ve really captured something special.” Encouraged by his words, I shared how painting had become my comfort during difficult times. He listened patiently, offering tips on new techniques and materials I could try. As I left the store with fresh supplies, I felt a sense of relaxation and confidence.
Paragraph 2: As my interest in painting grew, my daughter began to ask if she could join me. Her eager request filled me with joy and hope. I gladly agreed and set up a small easel for her beside mine. Painting together became our special family time, full of creativity and laughter. As we mixed colors and created images, I cheerfully noticed a positive change in Gabby’s mood. She seemed more energetic, even on days when her treatments were tough. I gradually realized that although life hadn’t gone according to my original plans, it had also brought some pleasant surprises.

A By curing them of the mental problems.

It’s good to share right?

A. People having good love lives are too busy to post online.

C. People won’t have successful love if posting it online.
D. Good love lives shouldn’t be shared on social media.

You already know that smoking is bad for you and that drinking too much alcohol may ____36____(short) your life. Now a new study says that spending too much time in a chair and not having enough sleep should join a short list of behaviors ____37____ (know) to increase your risk of premature death.
