As a kid, Pamela Akuku spent her weekends exploring the National Museums of Kenya in Nairobi, following her mom, who worked there. Akuku became fascinated with the researchers she saw using complicated equipment and analyzing fossils. “But I didn’t know what they were doing at the time, ”she said. “I kept asking my mom about it.”
Akuku’s mom saw her daughter’s curiosity and signed her up for the museum’s Young Researchers Club. Akuku soon took part in mock excavations (模拟挖掘) and reconstructed bones. “I enjoyed reading and puzzles,” Akuku said. “And this was a mixture of the two.”
The museum experiences helped inspire her career as an archeologist(考古学家). After her four years at university, she was sure that she wanted to intensely study archaeology. She studied for a master’s degree in South Africa and majored in zooarchaeology. She is now at the Catalan Institute of Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution in Tarragona, Spain. There, she studies how ancient humans changed and made use of animal bones. Her research is helping to reveal more about where early humans lived. She is currently studying remains from Tanzania’s Olduvai Gorge, where researchers previously discovered stone tools and evidence of early human ancestors going back as far as about two million years.
Akuku gave some advice to the people who want to do this job. She said, “Be prepared to encounter hard conditions. Working in this field is challenging. You feel like you have to work twice as hard just to be recognized, or sometimes you feel you’re not working hard enough or that you don’t fit in.” But she has learned to deal with any situation. Now she always tells everyone they should feel worthy and smart enough. She often says, “Don’t feel like you don’t belong here. What you’re doing counts.”
24. What did Akuku notice in the museum?
A. The researchers studied how ancient people improved stone tools.
B. The researchers examined the nature and structure of fossils.
C. The researchers designed and made use of some equipment.
D. The researchers dug out and constructed bones again.
25. Why did Akuku’s mother let her join the Young Researchers Club?
A. Akuku’s mother wanted her to help with her work.
B. Akuku’s mother was persuaded to do so by the club.
C. Akuku was familiar with some members in the club.
D. Akuku had a strong desire to know about something.
26. What is true about Tanzania’s Olduvai Gorge?
A. Many stone tools wait to be found there.
B. The historical site was seriously damaged by people.
C. People possibly lived there about two million years ago.
D. The remains were discovered by researchers from Kenya.
27. What does Akuku suggest relevant people have a sense of?
A. Their being intelligent and solving problems quickly.
B. Their being bright and believing that they’re valuable.
C. Their being generous and giving others a hand instantly.
D Their being courageous and concentrating on their missions.

Every year thousands of people come to the city of Pamplona, in north-eastern Spain, for the opportunity to run for their lives as six fighting bulls are released to charge through the town. There are injuries and deaths every year, but the event is of interest to many people. A paper just published in Science describes the insight the event offers into the psychology of panicked crowds.
That is a useful topic to explore. Architects, civil engineers and urban planners must try to work out how people will behave in the event of a disaster like a fire, a flood or a terrorist attack so they can design their creations to avoid potentially deadly collisions (碰撞). Unfortunately, solid information is hard to obtain. Daniel Parisi, the paper’s lead author, realized that the Pamplona bull-runs offered the perfect natural experiment.
Dr. Parisi and his team went to two different rooftop locations in Pamplona in July 2022, and filmed the runners as the animals were released. Later in the lab, they calculated the speed of the runners, the density (密度) of the crowd, the probability of a runner tripping and falling and the relationship between runner-group density and speed.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the researchers found that runners picked up speed when the bulls drew near. Less expected was the finding that the speed of individual runners increased with the density of the crowd, which was contrary to a long-held assumption in architectural and urban-design circles that people will slow their pace as group density goes up, in order to lower the riskof a collision, which could lead to a fall and, perhaps, injury or death.
Yet it seems that, in the heat of the moment, people pay little attention to the danger of colliding with each other, and do not slow down. The responsibility therefore falls upon urban designers to work out how to best plan the construction of future tunnels, bridges and other passages that restrict the flow. The only option may well be to make them wider.
28. What does the paper concentrate on?
A. How six fighting bulls appeal to so many people.
B. How bull-runs cause injuries and deaths every year.
C. How six fighting bulls are released to charge through the town.
D. How bull-runs affect frightened people’s minds and behaviours.
29. Why was the Pamplona bull-runs chosen for the experiment?
A. To help participants better understand city planning.
B. To ensure more meaningful activities in the future.
C. To offer constructive advice on avoiding disasters.
D. To collect reliable data from the panicked crowds.
30. How did Dr. Parisi and his team carry out their research?
A. By observing the event and analyzing the information.
B. By using the method of reasoning and judging.
C. By consulting the organizers of the bull-runs.
D. By doing experiments with some volunteers.
31. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. People tend to slow down in high-density crowds.
B. Finding out the truth has a profound impact on urban design.
C. People in panicked crowds focus more on the potential danger.
D. Speeding up in high-density crowds is the only way to avoid danger.

PARIS — Paris’ Notre-Dame Cathedral reopens its doors on Saturday, five-and-a-half years after it was severely damaged by a fire that destroyed its spire (尖顶) and roof and caused the entire Gothic masterpiece to collapse in minutes.
The 860-year old medieval cathedral (大教堂), a symbol of both France and Paris, has been quite carefully restored. On the evening of April 15, 2019, Parisians who rushed to the scene and TV viewers worldwide watched with horror as the cathedral’s spire and roof collapsed in the fire that threatened the main bell towers and the entire structure, which narrowly avoided destruction. “The planet was shaken on that day,” French President Emmanuel Macron said ahead of Saturday’s opening ceremony. “The shock of the reopening will — I believe and I want to believe — be as strong as that of the fire, but it will be a shock of hope.” The cathedral’s first stone was laid in 1163, and construction continued for much of the next century, with major restoration and additions made in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Thousands of expert craftspeople — from wood carpenters and stonemasons to glass window artists — worked around the clock for the last five years, using age-old methods to restore, repair or replace everything that was destroyed ordamaged. “Notre-Dame is more than a Parisian or French monument. It’s also a universal monument,” said historian Damien Berne. “It’s a landmark, a symbol, indicating that in a globalised world everything evolves permanently,” said Berne, a member of the scientific council for the restoration of Notre-Dame.
Victor Hugo helped make the cathedral a symbol of both Paris and France when he used it as a setting for his 1831 novel, “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame”. Quasimodo, the main character, has been portrayed in Hollywood movies, an animated Disney adaptation and in musicals.
The Catholic Church now expects the cathedral to welcome some 15 million visitors annually. The cathedral says that from Saturday, visitors will be able to book a free ticket online, on its website, social media or a dedicated app, to get into the building on the same day or one or two days after booking a ticket. There will also be a queue on the spot for those who want to enter it without a booking. The cathedral has also created an app to help self-guide visits.
32. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. The cathedral started to be constructed in the 12th century.
B. Only the main bell towers were seriously affected by the fire.
C. Someone set fire to the cathedral on the evening of April 15, 2019.
D. After the opening ceremony Macron said the whole world was shaken on April 15.
33. Which can replace the underlined word “portrayed” in the fourth paragraph?
A. Qualified. B. Recorded. C. Played. D. Evaluated.
34. How can visitors enter the cathedral?
A. By using a dedicated app to get a cheaper ticket.
B. By reserving a ticket without paying any money.
C. By donating some money to the Catholic Church.
D. By lining up to purchase a ticket at the scenic spot.
35. What is the best title for the news report?
A. Thousands of expert craftspeople work hard to restore Notre-Dame
B. 860-year old medieval cathedral — a symbol of both France and Paris
C. Notre-Dame Cathedral reopens on Saturday, five years after fire
D. Fire brings entire Gothic masterpiece within minutes of collapse

William was a school student living in a suburban neighborhood. He was seventeen years old. One summer evening, William was getting ready for bed after finishing his assignments when he heard the sounds of fire alarms and screams coming from the outside. He quickly realized that there was a fire in his neighborhood and that his neighbors might be in danger.
He looked outside and saw that one of his neighbors’ houses was on fire. He knew that he had to act quickly to help his neighbors. After calling 911, he ran outside and heard his neighbors’ little son crying inside their burning house. “He must be quite scared and in a dangerous situation,” William thought.
William quickly assessed the situation and found that the house was almost surrounded by the flames (火焰). The best way was through the front door, but it was blocked by the fire as well. He knew that he had to find another way to help the boy escape from the house.
He ran back to his house, grabbed a ladder and then rushed toward his neighbors’ house. He placed the ladder against the second-story window and managed to help the little boy climb down to safety. Once the boy was safe on the ground, William climbed up into the burning house again to see if anyone else was trapped there.
As he made his way through the smoke, he heard cries for help from a bedroom on the third floor. He quickly ran up the stairs and found an elderly woman who was too weak to move. William quickly picked her up and carried her down the stairs and the ladder to safety. By this time, many firemen had arrived, and they did their best to put out the flames.
Looking around, William saw that a few other houses in the neighborhood were also on fire. He was aware that the fire was spreading quickly and that more people needed help. Without hesitation, William joined those firemen, who were working tirelessly to extinguish the flames. He helped elderly neighbors, families with young children, and even pets.

【答案】Dear editor,
I’m Li Hua, a Senior Two student of our school. I’d like to share a funny story about myself that happened last Monday. After breakfast, I went to school in such a hurry that I accidentally put on two different shoes. When I entered the classroom, my friends found that I was wearing two different shoes and couldn’t help laughing. It was embarrassing at first, but I soon realized the humor in the situation.
I felt a bit silly, but it also taught me to slow down and pay more attention to details. It’s a day I won’t forget, and it’s a great reminder to find humor in small things in our life.
Yours sincerely
Li Hua

【答案】Then William saw one of his neighbors, Mr. Adam, holding a few photos with tears streaming down his face. Their children, Bill and Alice, huddled together, looking scared and lost. William walked over to them, not knowing what to say. He just put his hand on Mr. Adam’s shoulder and said, “I am terrible sorry that this has happened. Look ahead and everything will turn out fine.” They agreed and nodded their heads. After comforting them, William went on to help fight against the fire. After hours of effort, fortunately, the fire was finally put out. Then exhaustion began to set in, but he felt warm in his heart. Having made sure everyone was safe, he quietly left the scene, went back to his room and climbed into his bed to enjoy a sound sleep.
William’s good deed quickly spread in the community and beyond. When he woke up the next morning, he found his action didn’t go unnoticed by his school. A call from his principal came, announcing he was awarded the title of School Hero. “But for your bravery, the neighbourhood would have suffered greater losses,” the principal expressed his admiration. Joy of being recognized welled up in William’s heart. But for him, the greatest award was that he had made a difference in others’lives. The fire also taught William an important lesson about the power of community. He became convinced that with kindness, bravery and willingness to help, nothing was impossible for a community.
